I also had severe anxiety to the point of being afraid to drive anywhere, so for 10 years I was a prisoner in my house until hubby could take me places. If you are not getting the results you need from the clonazepam, you should make an appointment with your doctor to discuss alternative therapies. Other medications can be used to treat your symptoms, but it is dependent on your current medications and other medical conditions.

I've not found anything as helpful for my insomnia as Clonazepam. I am curious why you decided to get off the drug. Personally, I take two different prescribed narcotics for chronic pain, and I thought I'd stop taking Clonazepam (after using it successfully for two years as a headache-preventative); but the insomnia returned and I decided to trust my doctors and went back on the Clonazepam (albeit at a reduced dosage). I'm very happy with it - though alway concerned about side-effects since I am on several medications.

Answer/Reply:
It sounds like you had an unfortunate experience with clonazepam. However, many people take it and do not have adverse reactions. Since doctors typically have good outcomes with clonazepam with most patients, they consider that the norm. It is a good idea to ask about any typical side effects when a new medication is prescribed. Make sure to ask both your pharmacist and your doctor. Natural alternatives can interact with presciption medications in some cases to be sure to check with your pharmacist if you are taking anything else. Talk with your doctor about other medications that are available to help with sleep.

I've tried many "natural" sedatives - melatonin, velarian roots, etc., and even the medications prescribed as sleep aids (e.g. Ambien) seem not to work. But Amitriptyline helps a lot. You just have to be careful not to take too much or the drying effect of the medicine might cause you to wake up with cramps in your legs. Personally, I am very happy with taking Clonazepam along with a low-dose of Amitriptyline every night.

54 female. I have been on Clonazepam for over 25 years. I was on 12mg for insomnia and stress. I found out it causes constipation, so I talked to my doctor about getting off of them. I am on 1mg and next week will start 1/2mg and then get off them completely. I've noticed an all over muscle pain, I get severe headaches and am starting to feel parts of my body that I have not felt in years!
I do hope the muscle pains and headaches will go away once I quit the medication entirely. Does anyone know?

These symptoms could be part of the withdrawl process, especially since you have been on it such a long time. It would be a good idea to get a complete physical to rule out any other issues that may be going on, unrelated to the clonazepam taper. Make sure your doctor gets blood work, as that will help complete the picture.

I have been on Clonazepam for over 10 years for a seizure disorder (my right leg just goes limp, like rubber). I was able to get off of 2 2mg tablets, but still take 2mg 3 times a day. I'm not sure how to get off of these 3, and my dr (who is in another town) will not return my calls. What is your suggestion. Answer/Reply:
You must/need a doctor to help you get off this medication. It is unbelievable that your doctor who scripted you with clonazepam will not return your calls. You should find a doctor who will help you, and I would write the doctor about his not returning your calls. You might also consider an informative letter to your state medical board about your inability to get your doctor to return your calls. However, the bottom line is you need a doctor to monitor you, also may need to switch to another drug that is less dependent while you are lowering your dose of clonzaepam, and then slowly get off the other drug.

Answer/Reply:
Clonazepam has been around for many years and is well tolerated on a long term basis. The dose your doctor is prescribing is low. Exercising on a regular basis has been proven to help with sound sleeping. You may want to consider adding exercise to your day. Before starting any exercise regimen, it is important to clear it with your physician.

Answer/Reply:
As long as you are not experiencing side effects or addiction issues, it is safe to continue clonazepam as long as you continue to find that it helps to control your dreams. However, this drug has been reported to cause sleep disturbances and nightmares. If your wild dreams return or get worse or if you begin to experience side effects, let your doctor know immediately.

I was originally prescribed Clonapin to take as needed. I take about 4-6 times a week, depending on the stress i am expecting on those days, work, events, etc. Is it bad to take it on and off like that? I also take Dexedrine with it on the days I work. Could it be causing me to have any negative side effects? The most I ever take is .5mg.

Answer/Reply:
The dose of clonazepam that you are taking is low. Taking on an as needed basis to manage anxiety and stress is a common way for patients to take it. The most common side effects are drowsiness and fatigue. If you are concerned about any side effects you are having, please follow up with your doctor.

The trouble with Clonazepam comes if you start taking it every day; then watch out!!!!!
You can have weird visions in your periphery, weird, stressful thought that really could be classified as psychosis...I also only take .5 mg. but I was taking them everyday - BAD CHOICE!!!!- AND NOW I GET DOSE RELATED ANXIETY INSTEAD OF MY NORMAL DAY THAT I HAPPEN TO BE REALLY HAVING ; a withdrawl induced panic attackk...if I dont take it every day. sometimes I just tell myself I can cope w.o it, other days I really don't know what is what and so I HAVE to take it!!! so yeah, its way better to take it the way you do - off and on.....and I personally agree that a decent stimulant at the right time can also avoid depression or a panic attack...

Answer/Reply:
Dependence can occur even after short-term use with clonazepam, which can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms can include irritability and insomnia. It is less common to experience withdrawal symptoms when taking a smaller dose or taking the clonazepam less frequently. If you are having these withdrawal symptoms so frequently and so severely, you should make an appointment with your physician to discuss them.

I've been taking Clonazepam for about ten years now. For a while, I was on 8-10mg/day. Now I take 3-4mg for sleep. I've always taken it for sleep, but at times I did also take a daytime dose for anxiety.
I've NEVER had the symptoms you describe, and I do take it everyday. Perhaps you should have a talk with your Doc.

Answer/Reply:
It is best to avoid suddenly stopping any medication. Clonazepam (the active ingredient of Epitril) is a medication that requires a tapering schedule to prevent side effects. Make an appointment with your physician to discuss your concerns and your desire to stop this medication. Together you can make a schedule to stop the clonazepam that can help reduce the side effects.

I take clonazepam 0.5, and adderall XR - kind of as a result of the adderall, so I don't get too jittery. When I get really stressed (and lately, i have been), the right sight of my face gets squinty/swollen - like a very, very light allergic reaction. I've been taking both for years, but with added stress, this has started happening. Is it related? Am I dehydrated? I drink gobs of water but I am always thirsty... Answer/Reply:
It can be due to stress. Speak with your doctor about possibly increasing the dose of clonazepam. If that is not an option, try to manage the stress with more sleep or exercise. Sometimes some lifestyle changes can go a long way. It is best to first talk to your doctor about your symptoms before making any changes.

Answer/Reply:
The prescription label will sometimes list the company that made your tablets or capsules. The label will also sometimes list a product number called the NDC number - this number is unique for each tablet or capsule strength and company. For our recall alerts, we try to list also list the NDC number if it is available.
The most recent clonazepam alert DID NOT involved tablets made by Qualitest. The most recent alert involved tablets made by Teva Pharmaceuticals / Novopharm. You can view more information about this alert at the weblink: https://www.iguard.org/alerts/alert/710.html

Every pharmacy's prescription may contain different information on the label. You should contact the pharmacy you obtained the medication from in order to confirm the information on the label. They will also be able to give you the NDC # if it does not appear on your prescription bottle. Typical NDC numbers are in the following format xxxxx-xxxx-xx.

Does anyone know?

iGuard Answer/Reply:
These symptoms could be part of the withdrawl process, especially since you have been on it such a long time. It would be a good idea to get a complete physical to rule out any other issues that may be going on, unrelated to the clonazepam taper. Make sure your doctor gets blood work, as that will help complete the picture.

Question/Comment:
I have been on Clonazepam for over 10 years for a seizure disorder (my right leg just goes limp, like rubber). I have since beeen dianosed with Psychogenic Seizures, and was told to wean myself from this medication. The dr offered no assistance in weaning. I was able to get off of 2 2mg tablets, but still take 2mg 3 times a day. I'm not sure how to get off of these 3, and my dr (who is in another town) will not return my calls. What is your suggestion. I know my body is dependent on this medication now.

I have been taking 2 1/2mg clonazepam w/25mg trazodone @ night for PTSD among other things (@meds) for longer than I can remember. When I weaned myself off clonazepam because of dependency concerns, the auditory 'hallucinations' returned. For me it's a necessity, quality of life issue.

Im a 59 year old male and I have problems sleeping at night. In my mind I already know that I wont sleep. This gives me stress and anxiety knowing I wont be able to sleep at night. Everyday I dont look forward to the night because I know I wont sleep. The doctor told me to take clonozepam .05mg at night to sleep. I hate taking pills but I just want to sleep. He told me to take Lexapro 10mg in the morning and clonozepam at night so I can sleep. I want to know if clonozepam is going to affect me long term???

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Clonazepam has been around for many years and is well tolerated on a long term basis. The dose your doctor is prescribing is low. Exercising on a regular basis has been proven to help with sound sleeping. You may want to consider adding exercise to your day. Before starting any exercise regimen, it is important to clear it with your physician.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
As long as you are not experiencing side effects or addiction issues, it is safe to continue clonazepam as long as you continue to find that it helps to control your dreams. However, this drug has been reported to cause sleep disturbances and nightmares. If your wild dreams return or get worse or if you begin to experience side effects, let your doctor know immediately.

I have Night Terrors, which are similar to what you are experiencing. I went and did a sleep study and they said I really need to be on this medication, my night terrors were greatly reduced. I take 1.5 mg at night.

Question/Comment:
I was originally prescribed Clonapin to take as needed. I take about 4-6 times a week, depending on the stress i am expecting on those days, work, events, etc. Is it bad to take it on and off like that? I also take Dexedrine with it on the days I work. Could it be causing me to have any negative side effects? The most I ever take is .5mg.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
The dose of clonazepam that you are taking is low. Taking on an as needed basis to manage anxiety and stress is a common way for patients to take it. The most common side effects are drowsiness and fatigue. If you are concerned about any side effects you are having, please follow up with your doctor.

The trouble with Clonazepam comes if you start taking it every day; then watch out!!!!!
You can have weird visions in your periphery, weird, stressful thought that really could be classified as psychosis...I also only take .5 mg. but I was taking them everyday - BAD CHOICE!!!!- AND NOW I GET DOSE RELATED ANXIETY INSTEAD OF MY NORMAL DAY THAT I HAPPEN TO BE REALLY HAVING ; a withdrawl induced panic attackk...if I dont take it every day. sometimes I just tell myself I can cope w.o it, other days I really don't know what is what and so I HAVE to take it!!! so yeah, its way better to take it the way you do - off and on.....and I personally agree that a decent stimulant at the right time can also avoid depression or a panic attack...

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Perhaps you should have a talk with your Doc.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
It is best to avoid suddenly stopping any medication. Clonazepam (the active ingredient of Epitril) is a medication that requires a tapering schedule to prevent side effects. Make an appointment with your physician to discuss your concerns and your desire to stop this medication. Together you can make a schedule to stop the clonazepam that can help reduce the side effects.

Question/Comment:
I take clonazepam 0.5, and adderall XR - kind of as a result of the adderall, so I don't get too jittery. When I get really stressed (and lately, i have been), the right sight of my face gets squinty/swollen - like a very, very light allergic reaction. I've been taking both for years, but with added stress, this has started happening. Is it related? Am I dehydrated? I drink gobs of water but I am always thirsty... I mean my poker face is terrible now...

iGuard Answer/Reply:
It can be due to stress. Speak with your doctor about possibly increasing the dose of clonazepam. If that is not an option, try to manage the stress with more sleep or exercise. Sometimes some lifestyle changes can go a long way. It is best to first talk to your doctor about your symptoms before making any changes.

As a patient with Dystonia and talking with over 13,000 people during the past fourteen years for a non-profit organization for people with dystonia, Klonopin is truly the drug of choice for most people with Spasmodic Torticollis, a form of dystonia. After trying nine other medications for ST, Klonopin was a miracle drug for me. The main thing to remember is to take the least possible dosage to get the desired results.

I was taking 7 0.5miligrams of clonopin per day I went to see another neurologist who gradually got me down to 2 per day and instead prescribed primidone which she said is much safer and less addicting than clonopin because of taking clonopin for 5years she said I will have to take at least 1 per day for the rest of my life because it is so addicting, I hate it and I wish I had been given more info before taking the withdrawls of coming off were terrible! I have head tremors which could have been controlled with primidone!

iGuard Answer/Reply:
The prescription label will sometimes list the company that made your tablets or capsules. The label will also sometimes list a product number called the NDC number - this number is unique for each tablet or capsule strength and company. For our recall alerts, we try to list also list the NDC number if it is available.
The most recent clonazepam alert DID NOT involved tablets made by Qualitest. The most recent alert involved tablets made by Teva Pharmaceuticals / Novopharm. You can view more information about this alert at the weblink: https://www.iguard.org/alerts/alert/710.html
If you have any questions about recall alerts, can follow up with your pharmacist or contact our support staff by email: support@iguard.org
