Question/Comment:
I've only been takin Klonopin for 2 years and have noticed significant memory loss, can't remember ppls names sometimes (and I've known them for years) I stagger, and studder have lots of bruises from bumping into things and as a result of being so tired to even get up half the time, I have gained 50 lbs.
However, I do like that it has worked better for me than any other panic disorder medications. I really hate the tiredness though. My psychiatrist has cut me down on it and I've been very sick from the withdrawls even though she's cut me down only by a little bit, I see it's going to be a long hard road to get off of these, and even then I don't know what I'm going to do about my panic attacks. 30yr old female

i have been on klonopin for about a year now and i haven't had any memory loss or weight gain. my dosage is 1mg four times a day, however, i did notice that if i haven't taken it for a couple of days that i have moderate/severe panic attacks to the point that i think i am having a heart attack. due to that i had my doctor order blood work and chest x-rays, with the results of the tests all being normal. so, it was indeed panic attacks, now i am scared to ever try to reduce the dosage to eventually be able to discontinue the medication. :(

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
The iGuard drug interaction did not find any serious interactions between your medications. Some of the medications have similar side effects, so when you use them together you are more likely to experience side effects. Crestor can cause some muscle and joint pain without being a serious side effect. It depends on how these symptoms affect your quality of life. If your blood work with electrolytes has not been checked recently, you could ask to have them checked to make sure there is not another underlying cause for your muscle pain or cramps.

Question/Comment:
I have not had any problems with Klonopin. I have been taking .5 mg of Klonopin 3-4 times a day. This has worked well for me for 12 years. I have tried other benzo's but, I do not like them. The other benzo's like Ativan, Xanax have a short life span, approx. 4-6 hours, which means you need more of the medication. Klonopin is a long acting benzo, approx. 8+ hours, which means you can go longer periods of time before needing the medication, needing less of the medication. The only problem I have noticed is that when I take my migraine medication, Fioricet, my speech becomes slurred, my balance is off, it gives me a 'drunk like effect'. I can only take my migraine medication when I am at home and do not need to go out and drive. I will not take my migraine medication unless I know I will be at home and do not need to go out anywhere and drive. It is to dangerous and I will not put myself or others at risk.

omg...really? when you take the two together you feel that way? my psychiatrist and doctor told me that i shouldn't experience any interactions or strange side effects. i used to take fioricet for migraines before i started seeing my psychiatrist and discontinued the fioricet myself because i was scared of interactions. i cannot deal with the pain of my migraines anymore so i asked my doctor to prescribe the fioricet again for me and he said that i shouldn't have any interactions or strange/bad side effects. hmmm...i wonder because i haven't started the fioricet yet. was is the amount (mg) that you are on and how many times a day?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Fioricet taken in combination with clonazepam may increase the risk and severity of drowsiness and confusion. The higher the doses, the severity of side effects is likely to increase. It is best to avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or doing any other tasks that require attention until you see how the Fioricet affects you. If you are concerned about taking the two medications or experiencing side effects, please talk to your physician to review how to take the two medications and what to expect.

Question/Comment:
I find it interesting that the iguard response to memory problems is that 1% of the clonazapam patients have issue with it... yet almost all of the first 3 pages of comments refer to memory problems. My doc just started me on the .5 dosage yesterday, but I'm very concerned about not being able to ween off if it stops working, and I certainly don't need any more mental fog! I'm taking Fentanyl, Tramadol and Norco now for pain issues, and they contribute to memory problems already. I was prescribed clonazapam for swallowing difficulties and sinus issues that make it next to impossible to sleep at night. Because I have Fibromyalgia, I haven't slept well in 16 years. I DO have to say that the clonazapam drugged me into a sleep that was deeper than I'm used to, but I'm already having a great deal of trouble typing because of loss of coordination in my fingers, and also having trouble with spelling and wording.
I'm a 59 y/o male that misses being able to think quickly and intelligently. Should I quit this med before it becomes difficult to do so?

53 year old female, dealing with life altering pain and anxiety attacks for last 20 years. I have been taking klonopin/clonezepam for the panic attacks. I have no side effects. It probably isn't even effective. But my mind blocks that urge to shake and begin the entire attack. Medicine or me. Do not care. I feel better. I live well. I don't fear the night tremors. I 'd rather have the addiction than be back to my black life. 20 years-no noticeable side effects.

I have anxiety and panic attacks. The panic attacks can totally disrupt my life where I cannot work or drive. I take 20 mg lexapro daily and clonazepam .25 mg to .5 mg as needed. Usually I only need a few a month. This has worked well for me for 7 years. Fatigue is the only issue I've really had with the clonazepam if I've needed higher doses than I usually take. The lexapro has been the key to keeping things under control for me.

I have been there just like you. Xanax also stopped working for me. My doctor also put me on clonazapam, it took time for it to work, but he also had me on lexapro 10mg at night, it worked great for 6 months, then he reduced clonazapam to every other day, and went up on the lexapro to 20mg at night. I feel better, and off clonazapam. I walk in the mornings or in the evenings when its cool. When I can't sleep or nerves. I put my thoughts in writting or listen to music to relax. And try to think possitive about yourself. Things well get better for you.

Question/Comment:
I just started taking clonazepam (.25 mg) twice a day morning and night for my anxiety/panic attacks. At night, it makes me sleepy (which is good) but when I wake up in the morning, I feel nauseous with diarrhea. Also, when I take it in the morning, I feel drowsy for the first hour. Has anybody had these symptoms when first starting out and if so, how long do they last before your body gets used to the drug? Oh yah, another thing is I still have anxiety attacks but just not as frequently and as severely. I thought you were supposed to feel relief right away.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Approximately 15% of iGuard patients taking clonazepam experienced drowsiness as a side effect. In addition approximately 10% of iGuard patients reported fatigue while taking clonazepam, 5% reported dizziness and 5% reported grogginess or confusion. There have been not reports of nausea or diarrhea reported in our surveys of iGuard patients taking clonazepam, as a side effect.
It is unknown how long your side effects will continue as every patient is different. Many patients will see the side effects lessen as their bodies become used to the medication. Be sure to keep in contact with your doctor, especially if the symptoms worsen over time. If your side effects continue or if you continue to have anxiety and panic attacks, your doctor may want to adjust your dose based on your symptoms.

I'm 62 yr old female. In 1995 I had a major illness, Bacterial & Viral pnuemonia, with sepsus blood and a hole in my lung. I was in the hospital for 30 days and off work for 4 months. When I went back to work, and life/stress came back into my life, I quit sleeping through the night or not @ all. I started having Panic attacks and couldn't focus and was nauscious, I thought I was loosing my mind. I finally went to the Doctor, and have been on Clonazepam since. He tried antidepressents with them but I didn't need both, was too much medicine. One caused me to have high blood pressure. I'm taking 1 mg a day but it makes my memory fuzzy. If I try to reduce the amount I only sleep 4 or 5 hours instead of 7. Anyone else have trouble with memory?

I was put on klonopin 2mg per nite for fibromyalgia in 2005, but I have a history of panic disorder. I think it has affected my memory and my ability to spell. I was a perfect speller. I am a 71 yr old female.I was on xanax before when I first had panic disorder and also inimpramine, which really stopped the panic attacks and was easy to get off of. Inimpramine is a TCA and has several side effects which I can no longer tolerate, Xanax is hard to get off if you take it for any length of time. Klonopin is longer acting. I found it hard to reduce even 1/4 dose. Xanax was hell to kick. I did it once and then had to go back on it anyway later. Klonopin is also an anti-seizure med and anti-spasmotic, which is good for fibromyalgia.
For panic I found meditation, relaxation and cognitive therapy were most helpful. Also, initially immediate exposure to whatever provokes the attack and knowing how to deep breathe.

Answer/Reply:
To tell you the truth, I've been taking klonopin for over a year now and it's worked great. I teach
high school science, some at college level, which require a lot of memory use and I figured out that what causes the memory loss is the depression and anxiety, not the medicaiton. Of course, there are some medications that do affect memory, but klonopin is for anxiety. It also took care of my Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which can get really bad at time. If you have a problem with memory, put it to work more often, and focus on what your're doing. When we have anxiety, we're not focusing on what wer're doing, therefore, we forget important things, which then gives us more anxiety when we forget them. Keep an agenda or a diary and write everyting down you don't want to forget. I have trouble rememberring things sometimes, but
if I write it down, as well as my feeling, I'll be O.K.

Answer/Reply:
If you have cash, then I just tried one of the best and newest natural meds for bloating etc... I use a full face mask every night for sleep apnea and that creates tremendous bloating as air is going into your stomach all night extremely fast.It doesnt happen to eveyone, but alot.I also have an arthritic back condition that gives me tremendous pain when the air inside creates pressure from inside on my spine. So, I dont sleep deeply and dont sleep well, becaue of this air pressing on my spine. If that wasnt enough, my Doc has told me to increase my fiber intake.Anyone that knows what this means is now laughing and rolling around the floor and cant get up LOLOLOL. Increse in fiber for those who dont know, severely increases bloating and gas, by lots and lots ouch.I got enough already.Anyways, I tried this new priobotics pill which is natural bacteria we have in our systems already. But, this is millions of them in a capsule.Take one daily and no bloating, very, very little gas and never slept so good and deep without pain.Rested in morning and actually cheerful.
I am shocked that it works as I am naturally extremely skeptical. It did very well and I looked it up and sold at walgreens and must also be in others. No side reactions to anything either. One problem. It cost one dollar a Pill a day, so it would be 365 dollars a year.if the relief is worth it and you have the cash.It cannot be beat. Remember align.Big compny Proctor and Ganble so no fly by night outfit. Hope it helps and can ask doc first.

Are there any natural remedies to help offset this or has anyone been given an additional prescription to counter this side effect.
Look forward to someone assisting, especially since the medication is very effective for me and only has this one mild side effect. If I could eliminate it, I would have no complaints about the medication and not be considering a slow withdrawal and eventual discontinuation of the drug.

I have been taking Clonazepam for a couple of years with no side effects strong enough for me to notice. I do not have RLS every night, but on the nights that I do - maybe a couple of times a week I take a single clonazapam and within 30 minutes my symptoms are gone, allowing me to rest comfortably. I guess the one side effect is that it calms me and makes me drowsy, which is fine because that helps me get to sleep as well. I travel quite a bit for work and a couple of years ago had a panic attack from being on one of those little airplanes that only have 1 seat on each side of the aisle. Had never had an attack like that before but I felt trapped in this little confined space and was about to come out of my skin. After that I found out that clonazapam also works for anxiety and panic attacks. Now I also take one pill about 30 minutes before my scheduled flight and I am calm and able to sleep during the flight. It has been a life saver. While prescribed for my RLS I am finding that it helps to even me out whenever I am heading into a stressful situation. One a side not if you have RLS, I noticed that on days when I drink diet soda my symptoms are worse that evening. Not sure if they are related but almost everytime I have had a diet soda I start to expect RLS that night and it usually kicks in. I avoid sodas of all sorts now, diet or otherwise, and my RLS has gotten better. Coincidence, fact, whatever - you might do your own personal study if you drink lots of soda - stop for a couple of weeks and see if your RLS symptoms lessen. Worth a try - it has been working for me.

I developed severe, nightly RLS shortly after having three strokes 7 years ago. My doctor prescribed the standard medications for RLS, but they did nothing to relieve the symptoms. Then we/he decided to try clonazepam. Thankfully it worked immediately! I have been taking .5 every night for RLS for about four years. Occasionally (once or twice a month) I will still get the symptoms shortly after going to bed so I will take another .5 pill and within 15 - 20 minutes the symptoms are gone and I sleep comfortably. I have noticed no side effects except possible weight gain. Not sure if caused by the clonazepam or not since I take five other medications every night. Dieting hasn't helped and I am unable to do any serious exercise because of the damage to my arms and legs from the strokes. Overall I am very satisfied with the results of clonazepam for RLS.

My Mother had Restless Leg for years and her Doctor never could find the right medication for her and she tried everything. I have to say that when I first started the Requip the Doctor put me on one mg. and it made me very nauseated but I think now if I eventually have to have it increased I will be ok because my system is used to it now. I was first prescibed klonopin 1mg: 3x a day when I was 18 yrs. old. That was 27 yrs. ago. I was on it for 2 yrs. During that 2 yr. period, I dropped from 165lbs. to 128lbs. A loss of 37lbs. I didn't change my eating or exercise patterns. My doctor had no explanation, other than chronic anxiety. Anyway, I tapered off of it slowly and sucessfully. My weight slowly increased back up to 165lbs. where I stayed for many years. I've been on and off both klonopin and xanax in the years since for panic, and GAD. Never have I experienced weight loss again. Maybe it has something to do with the youthful age factor. Just a guess. Good luck, and be sure to share ALL info w/ your doctor.

Started with panic attacks when I was 21 and am now 60.Then they just said at emergency room I was exhausted from work.Times I couldnt leave house or even move if anyone knows what it does.I have almost died at sea a few times and that is nothing compared to a panic attack as I explain to someone who has no idea. These things went on and off with differing severity for many years and have been taking it for about 20 or more years and it is a wonder medicine.I have taken other types, but this works the best.Have felt close, but always works and never hasnt. My doctor was on vacation or golfing fo two weeks and needed the prescription filled and did not leave anyone behind to refill.I must agree with the other person who stated that it was severe just going cold turkey off of them.I had worse panic attacks then before I took the pills, so make sure as they all tell you to never stop without a doctor to keep a eye on you.I ended up in emergency and they gave me some till my doc came back. Never want to go through that again, but still worth taking these amazingly good pills that just plain work and have few other side effects for me.

I have just recently been put on 0.5 clonazepam in the past two months and it works with my anxiety and sleeping. I've never really had a great appetite but i have also lost weight within a short period of time. I too am 98 pounds and i was 110. I eat when i need to but im not sure if me just not having an appetite or the meds that im on. The medicine works great but now my mom is concerned as you are. My doctor told me with the combination of drugs that i am on could cause some weight loss. So i would talk with the doctor about it.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking l/2 pill 3 times a day of Klonopin for anxiety and I take 75mg. of Pamelor at night for depression for between 11 to 14 years. My hometown doctor had tryed every kind of drug he could find for anxiety and depression. Prozac, Xanex, all of them and they did absolutely nothing for me. I thought I was going to lose my mind. Then I talked them into sending me to rehab place so a specialist could try to help me. First thing he tryed started helping me the very next day. They are both old drugs, but we found out that my body reacts better to the old drugs for some reason. I will admit I am hooked, but happy. I lead a normal life now and sure I have my down days, but everybody does. Just grin and bear it. I would certainly rather be hooked than to lead a life like I was. I am 71 yrs. old (female) I prayed about this many times and the answer seems to come back to take it.

I agree with you. I am 57 and plan to phase out of taking the medication because I am one of the 1% that it affects my memory. However, the benefit outweighs the side effect, which is not major, but just a minor diminishing of my ability to remember things, primarily short term. PLEASE don't take this wrong. If I were 71, I would not consider discontinuing because it is the only effective med I tried. Although very difficult to get off of, I have never craved more than my nornal daily dosage, much lie people taking Valium do.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking Clonazepam for a couple of years now. I have severe muscle aches and spasms mostly in my legs, but other parts of my body too. It was a real life saver for me. Before I started taking it, I could hardly get out of bed or walk. I lived a life of not wanting to move my body for fear of the pain I would endure from the many spasms and sometimes muscle contractions. I only take it as I need it. I can feel when my body is getting ready to spaz out! LOL! I have had many, many medical tests. MRI's and CAT scans, blood tests and went to a neurologist who did a muscle biopsy. Every doctor who was taking care of me at that time surely thought I had MS, but the tests...all of them came out inconclusive. The only thing they could find wrong with my blood was that my creatine levels were high, and that I have a high sed rate, but they say I don't have arthritis or lupus either.I also take diclofenac sodium for the inflammation. Without these drugs I wouldn't have much of a life. They allow me to move and walk and enjoy my life. I am 52 years old and have two young sons ages 13 and 12, and its great to be involved in their activities once again.

Question/Comment:
I was started on xanax, 1mg, 3 times a day. Another doctor substituted clonazepam, same dosage, because he felt I needed something for my anxiety AND TO CONTROL THE TICS OF MY TOURETTE'S SYNDROME. My son [25] --I am 55--also had TS, but much worse than I do. Even with the medicine, he can barely sleep at night--making loud noises, and painful muscular tics. His neurologists and psychiatrists suggested he continue the regimen. My doctor did also. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT TO DO.Currently, the clonazepam works effectively for each of us; particularly for TS. Add Panic Disorder for me. Right now I am doing well and so is he. I have had a month where my meds were stolen [daughter], and I thought I would go crazy after about 3 days, and my son shared his with me.He does not take the full dose. Just need to read the book now, I think.

I have been taking clonazapam for about 8 years because I suffer from pretty severe anxiety attacks but it doesn't seem to be working as well for me any more ( 1 mg, 3 times a day) I asked my doctor to switch me to Ativan because they seem to work better for me...(My boyfriend takes them and lets me have a few of his when I get really bad) I recently began having tremors and not one doctor that I have seen will even address this issues, even though my father had MS for many years and subsequently died from a brain tumor. The Ativan also helps me to sleep....not one of the sleeping pills that they have prescribed for me help me to sleep at all & I have severe insomnia along with the rest of my issues. I suffer from headaches( whether they are migraines or tension headaches) and my doctors don't take them seriously at all either. I worry because of my dad's history but I can't get anywhere with any doctors. I am on SSI Disability and they treat me like I am a second class citizen and I don't deserve the medical care that other people get. It is very frustrating! So far, every specialist that I have managed to get in to see has been a complete disappointment. For some reason, they all insist that I see a psychologist or they won't treat me. I don't know what seeing a psychologist has to do with anything since they all have my records right in front of them & they can se that my MRIs and CAT scans show that I have REAL physical problems. They are causing me more problems than anything. When you have someone who suffers from anxiety, headaches, bulged & herniated discs in both the back & neck...wouldn't you think that someone would be more willing to help you? I even went so far as to move away from my home town to Philadelphia because the medical care was supposed to be so much better & ever since I moved here, I have gotten nothing but worse. They will not switch me to the Ativan! I am a 42 year old female

I am 62 years old and started on xanax in the 1980 for sever anziety. The problem with xanax is that it only last 4 hours and crashes, so my doctor put me on cloazepam. I am on the maximum dose, and live a normal life. I am addited as I have tried to get off several times very slowly. Do not just stop taking this drug once you have been taking it for a while. I am certified sailing Captain, even with the drug. I am able to operate at any time of the day or night. If this drug had been available for my father when he was alive he would have much easier to love. So I have been on the drug for over twenty years, and I don't see my doseage changing in the near future.

I have been on Klonopin for over 20 years. I was perscibed it for severe anxiety, my mind would race, I was too talkative and constantly hyper. My symptoms 20 yrs. ago are probably considered ADHD, nowadays. I have never had a problem with it at 0.5mg 5 times a day. It's a wonder drug to me. I don't get tiredfrom it and I can concentrate, and have felt"normal" ever since! Maybe alot of people w/ ADHD should be on klonopin. LOL It does work for me:) Thank God my doctor was able to see that it would, in small doses. If I run ou I have never had withdrawals, a little on edge but it only feels like I drank to much coffee. I agree with the ADHD thing. I'm 2 8, and have been on Clonazepam for over 4 years. I was prescribed it for anxiety, racing thoughts, I was way too talkative as well, I would talk so fast and so much it drove my family crazy ( I still talk too much, but atlwast I don't sound as hyped out! LoL) And I barely slept. My brother had ADHD as a kis, but was on Ridilin. No one ever thought Ic ould have it, so they said it was axiety...I think I've had ADHD all along. My family Dr prescribed me it @ first a 0.5 X 4 a day, and slowly over the years I've had to up the dose (I'm currently on 2mg X 3 a day), and due to family problems this past year, a lot of my axiety came back X10!! And I would "twitch" in my sleep, or just trying to relax, my whole body would jerk, and it would make me get that feeling you get in a dream when you feel like you're falling, it was freaky, but the Clonepan almost curred it entierly. And as long as I take my doses as normal or when I feel a bit "racey" I'm fine. I can concentate and everything, and It doesn't mess youup like other Benzos. If anyone is on a Benzo, they should give Clonopin a try, it works a lot better and doesn't make you all "fuzzy" feeling. I"m very happy with it and it's quite affortable even without insurance, I agree - Thank you Klonopin!!!

I have recently gone off of clonazapam. I was on it for over 7 years. My doctor didn't want me talking more than 3 tablets (1.5mg) a day. I was starting to feel like I wasn't benefiting from the medication so I dropped my dose and was off it within 3 to 4 weeks. I must say now I wonder if it was doing some help as since being off it I have been struggling with exteme anxiety. I often feel like I am dying. I have been precribed Ativan which is actually a very similar drug except that clonazapam is long acting and Ativan is fast acting. I have been generally taking the Ativan at bedtime but yesterday I had to see my other doctor and I was full blown anxiety so he wanted to put me back on the clonazapam but I refused so he suggested taking an Ativan then. I did and with 20 minutes I was starting to calm down but the rest of the day I felt very stoned. I was comfortable with no anxiety but didn't like the drugged sensation so today I took only half of one and did calm down, not as fast or as calm but it was nice to know I do have some control over the anxiety now.

My brother is diagnosed with it and takes klonpin and ridalin.
I've been on 1mg, 3'xs daily for at least 6 years now. It helps but I have to double up sometimes caues of the mind racing and me feeling ansy. My husband was on it too, besides depression meds, he committed suicide on March 10th, and I've been suffering ever since. I miss him so much. I too am bi-polar, but don't really think I am. I don't have mood swings, but for disablity purposes I leave at is. well, thanks, I just wanted to identify with you all.

I am very sorry about your brother! My mind also races a lot, and I tend to over take my klonopin if I feel like I am out of control...but then, you know how it goes, you always run out of them way too soon. I tried to go off of them "cold turkey" one time and I thought that I was going to die. I have been taking them for 8 years straight! The doctors are constantly trying to shove anti depressants down my throat and I have tried pretty much every one of them..They all make me much worse! I wish that my doctors would listen to me as I do know my own body and how it is going to react...But, they all think that they know so much better than I do. If I didn't think I was losing my mind before, I am certainly beginning to think that I may be starting to now!
God Bless all of you & I hope we can all find some answers soon!

To the person taking Klonipin for the 2002 back injury and restless leg, and anxiety-and on Soc.Sec. Disability- Medicare won't pay for ANY Benzodiazapines! My husband is disabled w/a back injury and gets Xanax for anxiety, I just thought his Medicare Drug Plan wouldn't pay for that drug-then I read somewhere that 2 or 3 Congressmen got together-I think at the time they set up the Medicare Drug Plan-and got a law passed that Medicare would not pay for ANY Benzodiazapines, ANY weight loss drugs and 1 or 2 other catagories of meds! Like they don't have anything important to take care of! Who are they to make a choice best left to a Medical Professional?! I am outraged over this! I just recently joined AARP, I going to go on their web site and see what I can find out about this law. Just thought you might like to know what is behind that fact. I have been prescribed many different medications for depression over the years. I currently have my depression under control, stress seems to bring on my depression. I have been prescribed Clonazepam for anxiety and stress. My doctor has told me to take it as needed, which is how I use it. The comment about this drug relieving muscle tension, for me, has proven true. My stress often appears as pains in my back. I take my medication and the pain is gone. Not being a doctor I'm not sure if it is releiving the pain or the stress, but which ever it is releiving, I am glad it works.

Thats interesting that you mention that. I believe the primary purpose for klonopin is to be used as an anti-seizure medication. I was prescribed it eleven years ago for general anxiety and occassional panic attacks and I have not been able to get off of it since. I've tried and don't even want to try anymore because the withdrawals are so horrific. And I'm not happy about being so dependent on a pill because if I have to go a few days between refills I can barely go outside. My hands start shaking, I jump at the sight of my own shadow and I feel like my heart is beating way too fast from fear of just about any silly little everyday thing that my mind starts working itself into an anxious frenzy over.. And worse I never had a seizure problem in my life but after klonopin I've had quite a few nasty ones during withdrawal periods. So many doctors fail to tell patients of the dangers of dependency on benzos plus I've read they are pretty hard on the liver. Its a medication I both love and severely hate at the same time. I just think people should be aware of the dangers before they look at it as their savior for all their problems plus I wish I had taken the step for other types of therapy for my anxiety to work hand in hand with the medication. Anyway, I hope I don't sound preachy because I'm certainly not one to talk myself, I don't know what I would do without klonopin right now. But I seriously wish I could live my life free of the klonopin chain around my neck. Yes i

To the 29 year old female that wishes she never took Klonopin. I know exactly how you feel. I have been on and off of it for over 20 years, now. The doctors started me on Librium, then xanax. I heard alot of bad things about it, and asked the doctor to put me on something not so addictive. He put me on the Klonopin. It is worse than xanax. My withdrawals are terrible. I really can't go more that a day without them. I am only on 1 mg. twice a day, but when I was on 1 a day, it just wasn't working very well. I have panic attacks and terrible anxiety. Maybe I have social anxiety behavior or something, also, because I was really, I mean really shy! before I started taking pills. I am 54 now and I know that I will never be able to get off of them, but I would rather feel normal than how I feel without them. My fiance finally agrees, that they are worth staying on, because when I run out I drive him crazy, because I am really a mess without them! I always get blood tests every year, and everything is OK so I guess the risk of taking them is worth it to me. I once had to go off of them for a while, because we moved, and I couldn't find a doctor in the area, that would give them to me, and I thought at the end of 3 months I would be OK, but I was worse. I was hearing things, having terrible panic attacks and it was very hard to leave the house. I rarely slept. I am lucky, though. One of my local pharmacies sells 60 of them for under 15 dollars. I had to really search to find them that cheap. My insurance does not cover them either, because they are for anxiety. I have been treated like a drug addict at some pharmacies! Good luck and don't worry about the dependency if you really do need them. I have tried mental health clinics. They keep me on them.

I have taken Clonazepam 1 Mg. divided into two doses. One half morning and one half at night for the shakes. I have taken this for 6 months and would really like to stop taking it. Dr. is treating me for Anxiety, and I personally don't think that was the problem to begin with. I think Dr.s are to quick to put people on drugs for their nerves when most of the time I think they need to get to the root of the problem. He had me on Zoloft for 3 months and I stoped taking it. I hated the side effects. I felt like I had the flu all the time and the vivid dreams were awful. I am seriously considering stoping the clonazem but understand it must be tapered off of on a slow basis.I would like to have a safe schedule for stoping the clonazepam, because I understand you can have seizures if you stop it to fast......

Answer/Reply:
You should never stop any medication without talking to or seeing your physician first. Make a doctors appointment and let him/her know that you want to get off this medication and ask if tapering down is necessary sine your daily dose is not a large one but you have been on it for long enough that you should consult your physician rather than try to handle it on your own or with the advice of nonmedical persons.

Answer/Reply:
True, you should always consult a doctor. Having said that, Klonopin can be a very tricky medication to get off of because of the rebound anxiety. If someone tapers too quickly and rebound anxiety hits hard, they can be discouraged and just go back to the original dosage. The key is to taper slowly to the degree that you are not feeling too lousy in the process of cutting back. I have been on and off Klonopin for years. I have taken up to two .5mg tabs per day. When I taper, I do so by cutting back 1/4 of a .5mg tab per week until done. This might sound silly, but any faster than that, my IBS comes back with a vengance and my irritability is too high. While a doctor will give you guidelines for tapering, ultimately, only you can know how much and at what pace a tapering process will work so that you do not have too much rebound anxiety (in my humble opinion).

I also take Klonopin on an "as needed" basis, and it too helps me tremendously. Maybe your doctor would be willing to try some alternatives for you. Google search "clonozepam withdrawal" this will hopefully get you an idea of how dangerous Clonozepam is and how hard it is to get off of. I have specifically replied to you but everyone who is on this Clonezepam blog should read this. I am 29, i have been on klonopin (clonozepam) for 10 years and i have tried repeatedly over the last 3-5 years to get off of it with no success until now. There are many websites now that help people get off of psychiatric drugs because unfortunately our doctors, psychiatrists, counselors, therapists, psychologists, and any specialist do not know the degree of severity involved with getting off of clonozepam. It is quite sad to say the least. the program i use can be found at www.theroadback.org I have been on 2mg a day for 10 years and with the help of the program and its structure and T.R.B.'s experience I have been able to taper down without many withdrawal symptoms at all. I still work and can function. I am currently about to drop from 1.6 mg to 1.5 and i continue to drop 5% from my original 2mg every 2 weeks.

You are sooooooooo right about clonzepam. Check this out. Did you know the FDA requires generic companies to have only 80% of the actual drug to pass!!! For example, you may get a tablet, say 1mg, may only have 0.8mgs of the drug in the pill!!! Some people may think, " oh, it's only 0.2mgs, what the problem. Without going into the actual pharmaceutics, if I am paying for 1mg I EXPECT 1mg. This is a reason of the huge price difference between brand names and generics. A brand name you are guaranteed 1mg. Anyway good luck.

I am a 54 year old male who has been on Clonazepam 1.5 twice a day for essential tremor. My head would shake very little. The Clonazepam worked after trying 3 or 4 other meds. I have been on it for about 8 years with no problem. Mike

Question/Comment:
I was first diagnosed with panic disorder, hypermania, and agorophobia over 25 years ago. I have been given every drug in the the famliy of benzos and I must say out of ALL of them, Klonopin works the best. I started to become really dependent on xanax in the early 90's when I first taking these drugs and I had tried all of them from Xanax to Ativan to Valium and I must confess, since I started Klonopin 13 years ago, I have had no issues with maintaining my dose. I do not "feel" anything from those, and that is probably why I can take doses like the doctor prescibes them. always got sort of a "high" on ativan or else felt nothing, not reven relief, while taking xanax, ativan, valium, etc. until I discovered Klonopin.

I also suffer with severe panic attacks. They have gotten worse over the years. I was taking zanex which helped but I had to increase my dosage regularly. My Dr. advised me to start Klinopin because it was about the same as zanex (which only lasts 2 hours) and Klinopin about 5 hours. I have had better luck with the Klinopin but still suffer attacks not as often if the don't catch it time without the medication.

I have to agree with your praise for Klonopin. I have been using it on and off for 16 years for panic attacks and anxiety. Having said that, for me, the next best thing I have done for myself has been to get into long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy, so that I'm not only masking the symptoms, but trying to get at the emotional root of them. It's been a long journey, but I am no longer feeling the need to be on Klonopin. Therapy is not for everyone, but it's sad bad that the people who might benefit from it are not utilizing it.

I take 1/2 mg Klonopin 5 nights/wk for insomnia. Sat night I don't take any, then Sun night I take 1 mg. My doc was worried about my liver - he said he read somewhere it can cause liver damage & didn't want me to have a problem with that - WITH 1 mg sometimes not even???!!!!!! I'm so glad you've been using it on/off for 16 yrs I was concerned when I first started it that you can take it long term? Anyway, Klonopin works for me as little the dose I take.
