Global Patient Feedback for Dyazide (Triamterene and Hydrochlorothiazide) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
Is it ok to stop taking triamterence hctz abruptly or should you "wean" yourself off of it slowly. I'm a diabetic who takes Metformin and I also take atenolol and lisinopril for high blood pressure. It looks like this combination of drugs have alot of unwanted interactions and I would like to quit taking it asap. Also, I take prozac and xanax for panic disorder and wondered if quitting prozac at once would have any bad side effects? I have tried for years to get off of xanax and cannot. I'm down to 4 mg per day (the highest dose being 10 mg a day) but I am completely addicted. Is there a safe alternative to xanax?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Suddenly stopping your medications can be dangerous. You should always talk to your doctor before stopping a medication. If you have side effects that are bothering you, share these with your doctor so that he or she can adjust your doses based on your response to the medication.
The iGuard website identifies potential drug interactions and explains how these interactions affect the medications or the conditions that you have. Not all drug interactions result in problems. There are situations where doctors prescribe two drugs together even though they may have an interaction. In these cases, the doctor may feel that the benefits of the two treatments outweigh the risk of the drug interaction.
However, iGuard feels that it is important for you to know about how your medications may interact with each other. We hope you will take the list of interactions to your doctor and discuss the risks and benefits of your medications as well as your side effects so that your doctor can adjust your medication to your needs.

What happens when there is too much potassium in the bloodstream?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Elevated potassium levels can effect your muscles - especially your heart. High levels of potassium in your blood may cause fatigue, muscle weakness and abnormal heart beats. You should contact your doctor if you think you have high levels of potassium in your blood.

I have using this drug for about 1 year. I have experienced eye tics and leg cramps and toe cramps but nothing that lasts very long or that happens very often. I can live with it and it does a good job of keeping the fluid from building up in your system.

Answer/Reply:
I just started on Dyazide but had the worst night of leg/foot cramping and charlie-horses.Leg muscles are still sore.
Since it was the weekend I spoke with my pharmacist who said this might be the result
of my potassium being too low or the medication dosage being too high (37.5/25).
He advised me to call the doctor and have bloodwork done to determine potassium level
before continuing.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
I too had begun to have toe and foot cramps. When I had my recent blood done I was informed that my potassium was LOW. My doctor told me to start eating bananas, orange juice, kiwi and other foods that had potassium in them. So far I am doing good with eating bananas and drinking orange juice. I also read labels to find out what other foods have potassium. It is helping. I don't go back to the doctor until March or April to find out if my potassium level has improved but I do not have anymore cramps so far! I hope this is helpful to whomever needs it.

Yes I also have eye tics and charlie-horses in my toes and calves and stomach and skin tics. But they are temporary and agitating, but don't seem to be long term.

if you have mild water retention in your legs, this is a good medication to take as it doesn't make you feel the urgency to urinate but definitely gets the water off.
