Global Patient Feedback for Fentanyl ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
just to know your own body and the pain level you are in and get a Dr to LISTEN to you. I know this is the hardest thing to do. I so wish Drs would only listen and realize it is true pain. WE are the ones that live in this horrible pain day in and day out 24/7 .. IF only they would/could understand this. I have tried to NO avail to get my dr to understand. AND until THEY are in this type of pain, they will never understand. Its sooo sad, but true!

Question/Comment:
If you can take something else, then take it because this drug is addictive and if you forget to change it on time, it can cause some horrible withdrawal symptoms

Answer/Reply:
If you could start taking something for the break through pain right now, it will be much easier to get off of in the future. I seldom experience withdrawal if I am late by one or two days to change the patch.

Question/Comment:
Duragesic works but i still have what they call breakthrough pain. I wish i didn't have anymore pain at all.

Answer/Reply:
I also get breakthrough pain but consider it as a warning that I'm doing something that I shouldn't be or something too long. I consider the breakthrough pain as a time to stop doing whatever it is so that I don't further harm myself. After all of the years that I have chronic pain that there won't be any such thing as being totally pain free.

I have been on a Duragesic patch for years now and now I am taking Lyrica and Ultram for pain. Maybe this should be an idea for someone also. I have had good results..

I am allergic to adhesives so I have to use the orally absorbed lolly pops. I have a very good reaction to these. I do not get "loopy" and I am able to function with little to no pain. These work the best for me at this time. Maybe you should try these.

Question/Comment:
Is there some point when, depending on how long you've been on Fentanyl or Duragesic, these drugs becomes more dangerous to you?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Fentanyl and durogesic are used for long term pain relief - with the biggest problems emerging in the first few weeks when the product is at greater risk of being misused. Since fentanyl should only be used in patients that are already opioid tolerant, if used appropriately, it has a similar risk profile to other opioid products that patients would routinely used prior to starting the patch.

I've been using the patch for several years now. I think that anything like this can be dangerous, but I've read that because it's transmitted thru the skin & doesn't have to go thru our digestive system, that it's not as bad as a lot of other pain killing treatments. I don't know that it gets worse over time, I think that once it's in your system, it's a constant steady thing. If that makes sense.. I know that when it starts to wear off, I feel it & I have to make sure that I change it on a strict schedule. The body does become very dependent upon it. But, it also works really well, for me at least. I think pills can be far more dangerous cuz you can take as many, as often as you want to. I know that out of all the Dr.s I've seen & spoke to about the patch, they like it cuz it has a small risk of abuse because it's not like taking pills. It delivers a steady amount of meds into our system & that keeps the body/mind from thinking it needs more. The only concern I've had with it, is that I have almost no appetite anymore. In fact, I lost over 30 lbs within the 1st few months of using it. I can't complain cuz I'd been trying to lose it for 13 years, but not like that. Now I'm pretty skinny & I have to make myself eat some times. I'm only 5'2" & I weight about 108, so I don't mean for that to sound like I'm sickly, I'm right where I should be for my height...
I hope this helps to answer your question.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
I am a 31 yr old F suffering from SEVERE Chronic nerve pain along my face, neck, shldrs & upper back - since very severe MVA in '96... I've tried ALL sorts of treatments/meds - & was finally put on Fentanyl patches (& losenges for breakthru for 1st few yrs) after exhausting all options in '98. Since then, my pain hasn't ever been tolerable w/out also taking anticonvulsants & depression meds. BUT, the patches allow me to function. Just taking the gabapentin/cymbalta wouldn't allow me to walk/work/pick up babies/think of anythingother than pain... I can now work & just had 2 babies (in 2 yrs!) - when originally told I'd probably never walk or think past a 4r old's level. Tho your body WILL become DEPENDENT, most do NOT become ADDICTED to patches. I started SLOWLY titrating down from 275 Mcgs 1.5 yrs ago - to 50 mcgs today. I don't believe too many find serious adverse effects if taken correctly, & patches have allowed me to PROVE the medical world wrong & to live out my dreams of motherhood. Ask your Dr's all questions you have, and please don't be afraid of the whole "addiction" stigma our society has. I believe meds like this are (almost) always a Godsend. I hope you can find relief some day soon - whatever the method! Note: DID have both babies in NICU to watch for withdrawal... scary, but both are beautiful & healthy & SO SMART!!!
