Question/Comment:
I have been taking Clonidine 0.1mg, 1 hour before bed for about 2 months now, as a treatment for insomnia, and to supplement my ADHD medication. I have not experienced ANY side effects, and it really does help me sleep without leaving me feeling groggy in the morning. As far as my ADHD is concerned, it may be helping a little, but I think the effects are minimal. I am happy with the medication though.

Question/Comment:
My son takes clonidine for tics tourettes. It has been great for that however the weight gain is a problem. He has been on it since 5 years old. He is now 13. At the start of puberty it didn't seem to be helping his tics were more like seisures so we took him off of it for a year. He just started on it again. Crossing my fingers that it helps him as much now as it did all those years. I Called it his miricle vitamin. Sports can be hard for him. He gets out of breath much easier when he takes this. But he works through it. I love this site. Good luck with this and God Bless everyone...

Question/Comment:
My mother has started taking cymbalta and has currently been on clonidine, crestor and lisinopril. She likes the way that cymbalta works for her however, she has developed sores on her face, scalp and upper body since taking the cymbalta. Is there another medication that she might need to look into to replace the cymbalta? Could this be an allergic reaction to the drug?

Answer/Reply:
For any medication you/your mother may wish to check into, I would strongly advise speaking to your physician and not an online community such as this. There are many medications out there, and I bet there is at least one that can replace cymbalta.

Was prescribed Clonidine (2 x 0.1 mg daily) for high blood pressure AND hot flashes. Initially I also had dry mouth issues, but that goes away. Give it a chance!

Answer/Reply:
I was recently put on this medication (.01mg 2 x per day), but this medicine is not for people that have to go to work. It is almost impossible to stay awake after you take a dose. The issue with the dry mouth has decreased, but something strange is happening with my left ear. It feels as if I am getting an ear infection and it is making a strange sound. It sounds like someone is blowing in it.

I've been on the clonidine for a couple of years now. It's the only thing that really seems to keep my blood pressure down. I take it at bedtime because of the sleepiness. The dry mouth comes and goes. Drinking plenty of water helps.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
I would consider raising the dose up, take .2 mg or take two .1mg pills. .2mg seems to work better for me. Also the dry mouth, tiredness and drowsiness goes away. I used to feel tired while on it, and when I took it at night, an hour before bed, I'd be out like the lights, then the longer I took it, the less drowsy I was and harder it was to fall asleep. I would also take the pill at a decent time at night to where you will get plenty of sleep, I needed like 5 to 6 hours a night on Clonidine. :) Hope this helps. I love this pill though, its simple and effective!

Question/Comment:
I am a 53 year old African American female and I take clonidine. I take 0.2 mg in the morning and 0.3 mg. in the evenings. My hair is very thin in the top and the back hair line area. I was told this was because I have Discoid Lupus. I previously took Norvasc for my high blood pressure but I started having side affects (severe swelling of the feet and ankles). My cardilogists put me on this medication. I don't know what to do at this point. I'm loosing my hair daily and I have noticed a significant increase in my appetite. I take quite a few meds so I'm not sure if the clonidine is the only med that is affecting my hair loss and appetite. I plan on doing a lot more research and speakimg to my doctor about the information I have received from this site, This is my first time logging into this particular part of this site and I have found this information invaluable. Thank you for this very important information.

Answer/Reply:
I was using clonidine as my main medicine for high blood pressure. I also started losing a lot of hair. I started doing my own reserch on meds. as doctors seem to ignore the complaints of hair loss. I found out clonidine was a source of hair loss. I took my results with me to my new doctor(yes, I found one who listened) and he prescribed different meds. for blood pressure. I do have the clonidine if blood pressure goes out of contol, but so far , have excellent results with other meds. New hair is coming in,although has been slow.Recommend doing reserch as their are several meds that cause hair loss.also, I take crestor and just read that it can make new hair come in dark, which mine is doing. I was blonde but new hair is brown!

Thanks for the information. I am going to ask my doctor about Crestor, maybe I can take that instead of the clonidine. Where did you research to find out which drugs caused hair loss. I take a few other meds for high blood pressure and I would like to check each one for hair loss and appetite increase. Thank you for all your help I appreciate it so very much. I pray everything keeps going good for you. God Bless.

Question/Comment:
I am on 0.1 mg clonidine. I do get the dry mouth side effect, but I can counteract it by chewig on some candy. I also get very drousy from it. I find that if I take a short nap. about 15 or 20 minutes, I can get over the drousyness. Since I am retired I can do that, but if I were still working, it would be intolerable.

Question/Comment:
I was prescribed clonidine in combination with other drugs. It did bring my blood pressure under control but I would get so tired and drowsy I would just go to sleep, almost like passing out. Also, I kept questioning why all of a sudden my hair started thinning out, mainly in front. and my scalp was showing more and more. I was going thru some stress at the time and when I would mention to Dr., always got vague answers to my question. Attributed to meds., age stress, etc. Finally changed to another doctor and was given different meds. My hair is finally coming back in and I am not falling asleep like I did.
I just joined this site and have already found out more information on drug interaction than any doctor has ever told me. I also take metoprolol and calcium and didn't know they should be taken several hours apart. I have been taking mine at SAME time!
Why do we fill out all this paperwork on what drugs we use ? I often wonder if the Dr. even looks at the list as we are usually allotted only a short time with them.
Have some serious concerns on other meds I am taking as my list came up with several warnings .

I have used clonidine in with 2 other blood pressure meds and was then switched to the clonidine patch and it worked like a miracle but afer a few months the patch started burning my skin and grew worst with time, used all kinds of creams but burns became worst, never wore the cover that came with it because of the latex it contained, no one knows why the burns but they became so bad I can not now use the patch, has anyone else tried the patch and had any burns....any suggestions would be great....real problem here.....thank you

Both my mother and I are on Clonidine and we are both rapidly balding in the front and top of our heads. I am 57 and my mom is 85. We were stumped as to the cause of the hair loss and perhaps your hair loss associated with Clonidine could also be the problem for us. I have an appmt. with a new internist next month and will address the issue of changing my b/p meds. Thanks for your posting on this site.

My mother and I are both on Clonidine and are both experiencing dramatic hair loss on the front and top of our heads. My head gets badly sunburned unless I wear a hat. I am 57 and my mother is 85. I am glad that you posted a comment about your hair loss and then recovery upon discontinuing Clonidine therapy. I will discuss this with my new internist next month. While this site indicates that hair loss on this medication only affects 10% of people, if you are one of the 10% it is very distressing. Thanks for your posting!

Answer/Reply:
I just started this medicine 3 days ago and after reading your comment regarding hair loss, I am now definitely concerned. I am just getting over the damage of another drug (Verapamil) and definitely would not want to have the same experience. I loss so much of my hair that I had to wear wigs for more than 1 year and a half. In fact, I still have to wear a hair piece because my hair on top is still so thin. I would be devastated if the hair loss started again. I will try to stay positive.

Question/Comment:
Was prescribed 0.2 mg at night before I go to sleep but experienced fatigue and grogginess when I woke up in the morning a great deal of the time and it took a half of a day for me to fully get over the effects, so my physician cut me back to 0.1 mg at night which greatly decreased my side effects. The difference in dosage was replaced by hydralazine tabs, three times a day.
