Question/Comment:

I have been on Metformin ER for nearly 10 years. I am a type 2 Diabetic and never had a problem with it until this last summer when I found out that I had lost one of my kidney's it had basically dried up. The doctors didn't advise me of the side effects or possible side effects until I already had Chronic Kidney Failure stage 4. I have been told that the cause of my kidney problem could be the taking of Metfromin for so long. Is this true

69 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

don't you have regular blood draws to check for these things? My doctor does a check on my blood 2x a year. It checks out my kidneys and liver.....

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

my mother is in hospital with kidney problems and a rare blood disorder. She is passing uric stones everytime she voids. Her metforomin has been cut in half because even with her as sick as she has been her sugars remain between 5.5-6. Now I am wondering if it could have brought on the blood-disorder?

Answer/Reply:

i was told by several doctors that it was bad for your kidneys i have one kidney, and they took me off of metformen and put me on glipizide. haveing that kidney removed was pain full!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

41 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Actually, metformin is usually not the original cause of kidney problems. However, metformin is eliminated by the kidneys and when a patient has poor kidney function, the metformin can build up in the blood and cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis affects the chemistry balance of your blood and can lead to kidney failure and other organ failure.

The risk of lactic acidosis is very low and most often occurs in patients with poor kidney function - so for most patients, the benefits of metformin outweigh the risks of treatment. Most doctors will regularly perform kidney function tests to make sure the kidney is working well in patients who are taking metformin. With that said, if you are taking metformin, contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained weakness, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or increased drowsiness - these can be early signs of lactic acidosis.

Also, if you are taking metformin and going to receive a radiocontrast dye study or have surgery, tell your doctors that you are taking metformin - in most cases, your doctor will instruct you to temporarily stop taking metformin during these procedures to help decrease the risk of lactic acidosis.

i can relate to what you are going through. my mom is 69 and has been taking 2000mg/day of metformin for the past three years. she was also taking glyburide for her type 2 diabetes as well. she is now in intensive care with kidney failure, enlarged heart and liver, low blood pressure, and may possibly have cancer. i pray that it is not from taking these medications, and that she can pull through this. i also pray for your recovery.

Question/Comment:

what are the possible side effects of humalog insulin

84 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

The side effects of Humalog insulin are similar to regular insulin and include allergic reactions, injection site reactions, low blood potassium and most commonly low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Since Humalog has a more rapid onset and a shorter duration of action than regular human insulin, the timing of hypoglycemia may differ in Humalog compared to regular insulin or other insulins. Regularly monitoring you blood glucose at home will help you identify periods of low or high blood glucose.

Question/Comment:

I have been on Metformin for 6 months, first 1000mgsnow 1500mgs.
In that time period my AIC came down slightly. Loosing weight has been a struggle even on Weight Watchers. I feel that Meformin increased my appetite.

73 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am also on Metformin. (1000mg twice daily) It did not bring levels down enough. Was put on Actos which caused me to gain weight and retain fluid. Also seemed to affect my heart. Was then prescribed glipizide which sometimes causes hypoglycemia. Some days I am very tired and don't feel like doing anything. I am also on other drugs which may be adding to the problem. Was not told Metformin can cause kidney problems.

Has anyone had experience using metformin for treating polycystic ovaries disease - if so, has it helped with weight loss etc? Thanks

37 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Yes, I have been taking it for 5 years now. My doctor wants me to take 2500mg a day but I can not handle that so I am taking 1500, Three 500 pills a day. I am in the bathroom a lot and have lost 10 pounds but no more. I have PCOS.

Answer/Reply:

I was prescribed Metformin for Polycystic ovaries. I cannot say for sure that it really helps in weight loss. I feel there also has to be a lot of supplementary efforts of weight loss to get real results. I am not sure and couldn't know whether it actually helped in weight loss since I had to discontinue the metformin for a surgery. Now recently, I have started again. Lets hope for the best.
