Question/Comment:
I'm taking Bisoprolol Fumatate 5mgs and 6.25 mg of Hydrochlorothiazide. A doctor wants to change that to 5mgs of Ratio-Ramipril and 25mg of Hydrochlorothiazide.
What would be the best thing to do? Suspend the Beta Blocker at once and start with the Ratio-Ramipril? How shoud I do this? my blood pressure is about 140/88 sometimes higher (150/90).

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Yes, this medication effect electrolytes and can lead to cramping if your electrolytes are unbalance. If you have especially bad pain in your big toe it might be gout--hydrochlorothiazide makes this worse too.

Answer/Reply:
Potasium loss is a common side effect. My first week taking it, I awoke with a horrible cramp in my calf, never like it before felt by me. I started drinking lots more water than normal and I try to eat a banana every few days to keep the potasium levels up. You definaltely need to tell your doctor about your symptoms. Good Luck ~ Gina

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
You want your glucose readings to go down and not up when you are treating diabetes. Don't skip a day, these medications are prescribed to be taken daily. You may want to speak with your doctor to follow up if your glucose values don't go down.

It is safe. I've had no problems or side effects both times I have been given the prescription. The first time was as a diuretic while I was on birth control and now as a medication to control blood pressure. It has kept my blood pressure at a very good level.

Because of its diuretic action, it is best to take it at a time when you will be awake. I suggest NOT taking it at bedtime or prior to a l-o-n-g auto trip.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
While all diuretics have the potential to influence blood glucose levels, there isn't much real world information comparing this effect between different diuretic products. Any experience from other patients would be welcome!
