Global Patient Feedback for Diazepam ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
Hi all . . . I am a female age 68 taking valium since I was in an auto accident at age 18. I am. totally addicted but came down from 80 mg a day, and functioning, back then, now to 5 mg and no matter what the doctors in Boston have tried, I no longer function without it. I have accepted the fact that I am stuck with it forever, but I would advise only short term use and breaking off of it quickly. It keeps my anxiety down and by now I forget that I have any problems with it but as a word of advise of someone who has been on it for 50 years, this is a waste to be so dependent on a drug...There has to be a better way and avoid its use. Its easy to become dependent especially if you have a doctor that just writes scripts.
Good Luck to you all

I dont think that Valium is the best drug for panic and or anxiety attacks. I have taken valium for my severe panic/ anxiety attacks, but have found that it only works for a short while. I have tried Ativan which seems to work much better.

I find that the only way I can take my hydromorphone is with a half a valium. If I don't take the valium I get nautious and very sick from the dilaudid. I am in constant pain from a surgery that went bad for five years now. I do need to be careful about making sure I don't take my sleeping pill within 5 hours of my last valium. So, I do take hydromorphone for the pain and a valium to help me relax from the spasms of pain. However, I really don't feel addicted to valium. When I don't have pain, I don't take either of them. I would love to not feel sleepy and tired a lot more often. I spoke with my pain mgmt drs. about the combinations (Fentynl, Ambien, Valium and Hydromorphone) they told me that is thier job to make sure I do not take anything that will kill me. As long as I do not take more than prescribed and take as prescribed.

Question/Comment:
I have chronic spine and cervical problems along with fibromyalgia. I have just had my 6th horrible drug reaction with hives, itching & blisters and have difficulty in knowing what is safe to take. I have had 3 trips to the ER (one by ambulance)and just used the medication prescribed at the last ER visit to get relief this time around plus benadryl. This time my spine was in spasms and the pain was a 12+, so I took 1/2 skelaxin and 1/2 loritab. Never again!
I cannot increase the darvoset for pain due to GI problems, so there must be some better way to manage my pain. Any help is appreciated. By the way, I have several doctors but the arthritis and pain doctors are in agreement with the cymbalta(which was j ust increased to 60 mg). Also had 7 epidurals and 2 facet injections for cervical pain.
Obviously, I am unable to work and in the process of getting disability. I worked for 37 years,; some days I cannot function at all.

the only thing that has helped me 100%. it's called medtronic's intra spinal drug infusion pump. i have alot of problems in my neck, back, broken shoulders. before i got this pump, that puts a continous amount of morphine directly into the spine. i believe that pump saved my life, because i was in such severe, 24/7 chonic pain, permanent nerve damage in my neck from a fusion of the cervical discs c-5-6. also, i was so depressed from it all i often thought of dying just to be rid of the pain. here's medtronic's number and they will send u a package all about the benefits. medtronic's-1-800-510-6735. or ask your dr's about this way of dealing with severe/chronic pain. so many of us deal with chronic pain. mine started when i was 15 and i'm now 52. bless u

Hi, I had cervical fusion too. I fell down metal stairway at work. They called it successful. I attempted to return to work, but the pain feels like I am carrying a bowling ball on my neck. I did retire under disability, but Social Security would not accept my condition. It has been since Dec. 2002. I have had physical therapy, shots, heat, ice stretching to no avail for relief. I even have range of motion issues with my neck from where they performed the surgery. I presently am on "Pain Management" with Oxycodone. But, between my diabetes and my back, and neck I thoroughly understand how you feel. You have to experience it to have a true understanding. This is chronic and the doctor has said, it's frozen and the posibiliy of recovering since it has been so long IS VERY SLIM.

Answer/Reply:
If you have been rejected by Social Security for disability you have to file a claim within 10 years or your totally out of luck. Contact a Social Security Lawyer and resubmit your claim because after the 10 year point there is no recourse. Good Luck. My cousin has MS and filed 3 appeals and was still denied but once they hired an attorney she was approved. I think they just want to see how serious you are. Why else would you have to put up with all their BS.
Good Luck again.

I can relate to your problems with meds. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1994...DDD and DJD in early 1980. My body does NOT like drugs. At first my doc tried me on everything new that came out, I have been through too many side effects to mention...finally found what works for me, but I became toxic on acetiminifin ( srry 4 spelling) in the percocet, switched to the patches, they effected my breathing, after too many years of what I call my doc expermenting, I am now takeing opana for long lasting relief and oxycodone for breakthrough pain, and have been on valium for muscle spasms for several years. I just can not function without it. I have my 4 year old grandson 5 days a week, so i have to function. Untill they find a cure for fybromyalgia, I will stay with valium. After all, what else can we do? I bought a Tai Chi dvd, with intentions of doing it in the A.M. But the pain is so bad it just seems impossible to do anything.
God Bless You

I take Valium for the awful vertigo attacks I have....initially I just took it when I had the attack...now I take it daily along with Meclizine. However, even if I faithfully take it, it doesn't always ward off a full-blown vertigo attack with nystagmus and vomiting and I have to go to the ER where they infuse with IV, you guessed it......Valium.

I had a stapedecotmy (inner ear surgery) that went terribly wrong. I was prescribed Valium for the vertigo too. I find that it helps but I also take Neurontin (for Bell's Palsy caused from the surgery) which causes dizziness, so the Valium helps to offset the effects of that med as well!

I am a 53 yr. old women. I have Maneris witch causes vertigo. They have tried many different medacations on me with no good results. Finally they tried 2 mg. of valium. I only take it if I feel an attack comeing on, and 90 % of the time it stops it before it gets bad. But even then sometimes I stii have a full blown attack just as you describe and nothin helps, I just have to hang in till its over. They did a MRI of my head to look for tumurs behind the ear. This is often the cause of Maneris but I didn't have any at that time. But if you have never been checked for Maneris or had a MRI of your ears, or head you really should concider that.

I have been held down with insomia since the birth of my second child. I also suffer from Bi-Polar. I have been on Valium for over 7 years (it worked great n helped me so much with sleeping and taking prn for my anxity attacks). When I moved to New Mexico, no doctor would prescribe it too me. IT was crazy, Finally after not sleeping for over a 8 day period (I got 2hrs of sleep) I was admitted and they finally gave me a RX for this again. Now with the help of my shrink I have no prolbems getting the medications that help me be "normal"
I really wish Doctors would stop acting like they are god's and listen to their patients. If you've been on everything under the sun to make you feel better and nothing works, but a drug that is 40+ years older works, why tell the patient NO to me thats malpratice!

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Im taking the same combo but 16mg of valium and 130ml of meth.my advise would be to take the methadone first and then sit down and wait for 15 to 30 min (watch some tv) Don't :rush around, Smoke, Drink Strong Coffee If you are rushing around this makes you feel sick. just sit and wait for the drug to take effect then take your valium I find the combo gives me acid (heart burn) so i have some anti acid tabs if needs be,the valium then stimulates my appitite and each breakfast.start the day slowly.

Question/Comment:
I have fibromyalgia among other pain related issues. Sleep is hard to come by. I use a very low dose of valium (2.5mg.) at night, before I go to bed. It helps me to rest more comfortably and doesn't cause me to be drowsy in the morning. I do take it cautiously along with any other addictive medications that my doctor may perscribe. I feel it's very important to communicate with my doctor and be aware of what I put in my body. This site is helpful and informative, for that reason and others.

I'm on vicodin for cronic back pain, cymbolta for depression but (I'm bipolor) I like cymbolta though because it mellows me out and dosn't cause weight gain and it's good for nerve pain too. But i just traded in my xanax for valuim to get the benifits of muscle spasms and anxity in one. However, it seems that since I added valium I have head aches now. I've taken valium in the past and this didn't happen but I wasn't on any of the other drugs at the time. does anyone else get head aches from valium? Any suggestions?

I used to get headaches too using valium with clonazepam and flexeril. The headaches eventually turned into full blown migraines. Several doctors at Duke University suggested a "step down" method using steroids (prednisone). I started at the beginning of the week taking 5x20 mg the first day, 4x20 mg the second day and so on until I was taking only 20 mg per day into the second week. It seemed at the time a crazy way of treating migraines but believe it or not, it actually worked. Discuss this with your doctor and see if this may work for you too.

Answer/Reply:
I have been diagnosed with TMJ as well and diazepam was originally prescribed for this, but it doesn't help. I don't have nearly as much pain as I have muscle twitching in the fanlike Temporal muscles around the ears and at both temples. The doctor couldn't even tell me if this muscle twitching was associated with TMJ for sure. Do you get this muscle twitching as well? It seems like I can't find anyone else in the world that has this.

Question/Comment:
Hello, does anyone else with idiopathic Parkinson's suffer with constant depression, apathy, and anxiety (quivering on the inside feeling) along with the usual tremor, rigidity, balance, etc., problems?
I was taking Diazapam (Valium), Prozac (60 mgs daily), and Cymbalta (60 mgs daily), for the depression/anxiety, along with L-Dopa 25/100 (3 daily) and Requip 2 mgs (3 daily) for my Parkinson's.
Something is wrong because my tremor in right hand/arm has returned and I am concerned that perhaps some drug may be stopping the effects of my L-Dopa(Sinemet) to help with Parkinson's symptoms. Anyone, please?

Answer/Reply:
Benzodiazepines (Valium) may decrease the therapeutic effects of levodopa in patients with Parkinson's disease. The mechanism is unknown. Perhaps have your attending physician take you off the Valium, and try another benzodiazepine. 1mg of Ambien (a really low dose) instead of the Valium may help or perhaps go off of the Prozac and switch to a SSRI that also works on more on anxiety as well such as Zoloft.

Question/Comment:
The only thing about this medication is that it can be habit-forming. I have trigeminal neuralgia, which is a very painful condition. Valium is prescribed to me so that I can not "focus" as much on my pain and also to help me sleep. I have to take it often, but have found that when I do not, I have a lot of difficulty sleeping. I would only reccomend this drug to someone who really needs it.

Answer/Reply:
Valium has a long term 1/2 life in the body, much longer than say Xanax or Ativan. This makes it far less addictive than those medications. As for the sleeping, take 1/2 your dose during the day, and the other 1/2 before bedtime. I think that you will see some improvement in sleeping when you don't take it in the evening. It sounds crazy, but it works.

Take as directed by your doctor. Take the smallest dose that you need. Make sure your doctor and pharmacist know all the other medications and supplements you take to avoid interactions. For example you would not want to be mixing St. John's Wart with Valium... I have found it to be very effective w/no residual hang-over the following morning. Plan to get enough sleep 6-8 hrs.
