i am 36 years old and have lupus anticoagulation gene that causes my blood to be to thick.i have had blood clots in my lungs and have been on coumadin for 3 years.is there any one else with this gene disorder i can talk to?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

What is the specific disorder name? I have heterozygous prothrombin gene mutation. Essentially, I produce clots and had been hospitalized twice (and almost died) before the disorder was discovered. I will be on coumadin for the rest of my life - unless they come out with something better. What specificially did you want to know about your disorder and/or coumadin?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I am submitting an answer for the 36 yr old female with Lupus anticg gene. I also have a form of this. I had a MI and triple by-pass 3 years ago. I am also 36 yrs old. Being on coumdin can be diffcult to live sometimes because I am still menstrating. I have had an iron transfusion and the lack of iron makes the energy level low. This is diffcult with two small children. I am feeling better since the transfusion and I know from experience of testing that I can eat 1 1/2 cups of the Vitman K veggies. You should wear a medical braclet in case of a car accident and keep a list of meds and dosages in your wallet to help the paramedics do their job. Once you learn your limitations and the sympthoms life will be better and it does not hinder you and you rise above it.

My husband had a stroke in January and brain trauma when he fell off the ladder having it. At first, they said it was due to "undetected high BP". He never has had high BP and still doesn't. After a month in the hospital (germ factory), his primary Dr. ran ANA. Referred to Rheum. and tested 2 times at 2 different labs. and was positive for Lupus, Sclerederma, and Sjorns Syndrome. The Neuro. he has now feels his stroke was due to the Lupus.

I am 41 yrs old and recently had a hysterectomy. After surgery I developed DVT and PE. While in the hospital I was given a heparin drip, lovenox shots and coumadin in the evening. I am now out and my PTT levels are still dropping. During one of my visits to the doctor I was told that I tested postive for Lupus Anticoagulant. I don't really understand it but we can learn together. It gets frustrating at times but I know that it has to get better.

Answer/Reply:

In Feb 2008, I was hospitalized with a clot in my left leg all the way from my groin to my calf. After many tests, they diagnosed me with Lupus Anticoagulation. Many people with this condition don't have Lupus nor do they ever develop it. Unfortunately for me, I found out in Oct 2008 that I do have Lupus. I also have Fibromyalgia, Seconday Raynaud's, and Hypothyroidism (all due to Lupus). My meds have helped with all of these conditions and I now feel much better. The only downside to all of this is regulating my INR due to all the meds that interact with the Warfarin. I've been on Warfarin now for 11 months and I have had to have my INR checked WEEKLY since then because of all the meds the Dr. keeps adding due to all my Lupus induced conditions. I can't complain though. There is always someone worse off than yourself.

Answer/Reply:

From my understanding, you can eat just about anything you want, but what you must do is have consistency in you your diet to make sure that your coumadin level is suitable for the normal foods you ingest.

I don't understand why they would make you stop eating greens and cranberry juice...?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I've been on warfarin for almost 8 months and I still don't know what to avoid in the food dept. They said foods high in vit k but also told to eat a consistant diet. I tried but find I eat too big a big variety of foods. Old habits die hard. I recently ate some black licorice and then read an article that said not to eat it. Nobody told me but I did hear no green tea or cranberry products. If there's a book out there that would help the drs. don't offer much.

Question/Comment:

I am a 66 yr old woman who thought I had brauncitis, and ended up with shortness of breathe, cough and clear flem coming up. Nose runs like a faucet.I had 3 stints put in in 2003,got off all meds and took nothing but Vitimins. In Feb of 2008,the shortness of breathe got worse,I ended up in the hosp, where they drew out 2 liters of fluid from my lungs, all test came back benign, then they said I was defibberlated, and put me on coumadin so I wouldn't get any blood clots. I take 7.5 mg at nite. Now when I cough there is some blood mixed in the flem.I told the Dr but they don't seem to worried.I also had some bloody nose bleeds, and the count is 2.3.I am still having some shortness of breathe and coughing with clear flem coming up. Maybe some one could give me some idea if they are having the same problems All the foods I love salads, and veggys now I can't eat. What does one do? HELP

I am a male, 71 years old and I've had 2- by-pass surgeries approx. 20-years apart with my most recent in October of 2006. I've also had several stents implanted to correct coronary artery blockage. They only lasted me 9-12 months before they occluded. I also had complications from the last surgery that resulted in fluid accumulating around the lungs. The fluid caused shortness of breath that required draining about 10 different times. After a while the fluid accumulation stopped and my system absorbed most of the remainder. My shortness of breath is better but still remains. I take a diaretic (water pill) that seems to help. I also take Jantoven (blood thinner) after trying several other generic types of cumodin that I couldnt tolerate (possible alergy to the dyes). Remember that periodic blood tests have to be taken to assure the proper blood levels. If I show signs of bleeding, I'll skip a dose. I also watch what I eat but occasionaly "cheat"....My golden years were in high school butt nobody told me !

Answer/Reply:

You can still eat vegetables that are low in Vit K. I got information from the hospital pharmacy when I was put on Warfarin for Atrial fibrillation.

Question/Comment:

I take Warfarin daily due to blood clots in both legs. After knee replacement surgery,
(10 yrs ago),within 3 mos.,the Dr. put me on Prempro! I think the dangers of Hormone
Therapy have long been hidden, and only recently, have the side effects been actually
admitted. I didn't need hormone therapy at 66!
I do have to vary my dosage of Warfarin occasionally, usually because of
changes in my diet. A monthly blood check is mandatory for the rest of my life, and I now
have to monitor my diet carefully and cut back (or quit) some foods I love, like greens and
cranberry juice.

Question/Comment:

I am wanting to take a diet pill called adipex will that hurt me or mess up my pro-times on coumadin 2mg a day...anyone?

43 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Although there are no interactions listed between phentermine (the main ingredient in Adipex-P) and coumadin, pro-times can be sensitive to medications and diet... If you and your doctor decide that adipex makes sense for you, keep a close eye on those pro-times (and let us know how things turn out)....

Question/Comment:

I have a heriditary blood disorder and have to maintain an INR reading of 4.0 so my dosage of coumadin varies from 2 1/2 mg up to 12 1/2 daily. I have had no adverse reactions to this, have been using this for about 20 years, it has saved my life many times. I am prone to getting blood clots from this disorder mainly in the lungs, when that happens you can't breathe.

75 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I too have a inherited blood disorder that clots my blood.. I have been taking coumadin since April
1995, also had lung clots. I take 7 to 10 mg daily to maintain an INR between 2.0 and 3.0 usually
jumps to 3.5 every two weeks cut back dosage I Have pro time every three weeks, to keep in check. Diet and other meds have a rollercoaster effect on INR. I haven't had any side effects that I am aware of.
