Question/Comment:

i have been taking allopurinol for 15 years.my blood platlets have been going down steadley to 77,000.could this caused by allopurinol long term use? 71 year old male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Low blood platelet count has been reported in less than 1% of the patients using allopurinol. Since there are many other things that can cause low blood platelet counts, you may want to follow up with your doctor to find out what he or she thinks is causing your low platelets.

Although extremely low platelets can lead to serious problems, most people can live without any problems from platelets at your current count. However if you notice any signs of complications of low platelets, such as easy or excessive bruising, a rash of pinpoint-sized reddish-purple spots (also called petechiae), prolonged bleeding from cuts, spontaneous bleeding from your gums or nose, or blood in your urine or stools, you should follow up with your doctor as soon as possible.

Question/Comment:

I have a prescription for colchicine (0.6MGs) that I take when I have gout attacks. It has been generally effective--especially when I take a pill at the first tingling sign of an attack. Is colchicine the same as Allopurinol?

Answer/Reply:

Allopurinal is used to prevent flare ups of the gout. It won't help during a attack. Colchicine is used for a actual flare up. I'm just getting over a attack so thats how I know about that. I had to quit taking the colchicine tho and had to start taking indomethacin to get over the attack..

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I take Alloporinal daily for gout. I have gout attacks whenever I eat shrimp. I only find relief by using Indomethacin. My kidney doctor says Indomethacin is harmful to my kidneys and should be used less frequently

Answer/Reply:

PLEASE NOTE: as a diabetic patient, all my physicians strongly urged me never to take indocin, due to the severe damage it would, not could, cause to my kidneys. I hope you are feeling better. I have medically induced gout, cause by h.b.p. pills with a/diuretic. Go figure!

Question/Comment:

I have taken Allopurinol for 20 years and have not had a gout incident since., should I still keep taking this medication?

68 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Allopurinol is often prescribed for gout patients who are producing too much uric acid. Too much uric acid causes urate crystals to accumulate around your joint, causing the inflammation and intense pain of a gout attack. Preventing gout attacks and inflammation is important for avoiding joint destruction.

Since you haven't had any attacks in a long time, joint destruction from future gout attacks may not be a big concern for you. You should talk to your doctor about whether you need to continue to taking allopurinol - he or she may be willing to give you a trial period off the medication while monitoring your uric acid levels and any symptoms of a gout attack.

Question/Comment:

I take it to prevent uric acid kidney stones. After a serious bout with stones, I learned of allopurinol and have been on it ever since. I have seen no evidence of kidney stones since that serious episode. (I lost a kidney and learned a lot about the system of urine collection and passing.) Drink lots of water, give those kidneys a chance to work wet.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I was just recently put on allopurinol medication to control the uric acid at a very young age. My uric acid was in the normal- high borderline. Another +.1 would have been considered high. I did pass a kidney (left side) stone two months ago and come to find out I have another one 3mm on my right kidney. Test results also showed that I was not drinking enough water and was told the high uric acid was cased by eating alot of red meat (ex. ground beef, steaks). I'm now drinking alot of water, cranberry juice, eating less red meats, and plan on getting out and exercise after I get over my cold. I have four children and want to reach old age.

Question/Comment:

Doesn't work unless taken every day as directed.
