i have been off chantix for about 3 weeks now, after being on for abt a yr. am completely off cigs for abt 5 wks. was a 2pack/day smoker for almost 50yrs. can't count the # of attempts before this. feels like a miracle that i have quit....but, OH, THE SIDE EFFECTS!!! angry, hostile, aggressive, despair, nausea, vomiting, confusion, mania, muscle spasms. big changes in behavior and mood, lots of thoughts of suicide and homicide. family, friends, doctors, therapist all KNEW about the warnings and none of us made the connection until i got a new warning from one of my quit smoking cites...yikes! i was on a lot of other meds as well, and have weaned myself off them carefully, but often the withdrawal was really bad, too. hard to know what is cause & effect, if i was on too long, interactions w/ other drugs, etc, but at least I HAVE QUIT SMOKING which i thot would never happen. just be careful, y'all.

Question/Comment:
I started Chantix on May 29th and stopped smoking on June 25th, had a pack a day habit, had smoked since age 13. I had bottom part of right lung removed in 2002 so was way past time. My Dr. said to just take the pill, don't pick a stop date, just see what happens. I have had no bad side effects, I have gained about 6 pounds which I needed. I have had the vivid dreams but other ex-smokers have told me that they had them without taking Chantix, maybe just caused by the nicotine withdrawal. I also carried smokes for a while, security blanket, lol. I started walking every a.m., p.m. now do about 5 miles a day with two big hills, quit drinking sodas and find that I crave water, a healthy change in my case. When I am around someone who is smoking I just keep telling myself how happy I am to be an ex-smoker, working great for me so far.
Good luck all.

I have been taking Chantix now for almost 3 months. I have noticed a decrease in smoking, but havn't quit yet. I hear conflicting instructions. Some sa to take it for 3 weeks then quit smoking but keep taking the chantix till you think your over it. And then others just say smoke until you just quit!. I am not sure what to do but i am sure 3 months now without just quitting isn't right, so I suppose I will jus have to pick a dayand stop. does feel like it will be much easier to stop though. I have smoked since I was 15 so 25 years of a constant hing has got to be hard to quit!. Unlike a letter or 2 down, I quit drinking, and have been sober now for almost 12 months with 1 short craving at the beginningbut otherwise. its been a piece of cake. (othe than I have gained excactly 30 lbs since I quit and my doc is getting mad at me. lol) Hope the same fate doesn't await me after I quit smoking!!! Ah heck, I'll just go back to drinking, thats much easier to quit. lol

Question/Comment:
My experience w/chantix has been a trip! I'm a 62 yr old male in recovery who took it for six months... twice the dosage because my doctor said since I smoked for 50 yrs, I should double the time for it to work.
It was incredibly effective for me. I have had no cravings & hardly even think about smoking now. Compared w/ my alcohol/drug addiction it was a snap. That took 30 days locked up in a hospital treatment center, 6 months in a half-way house, and continuing AA meetings and service in the program for 21 yrs.
It is an insidious drug that produced a confusion & loss of memory esp. at my job, that only became apparent after I finished taking it. I had become depressed, aggressively angry and in the end suicidal. After numerous episodes of befuddlement and angry outbursts, I was threatened with loosing my job. I ended up in the psych ward on 72 hr hold and a two month medical leave. Back at work another angry episode initiated an early retirement after 23 yrs!
I don't regret everything that's happened now, over 2 yrs later. My eyes were opened to a new productive life with out the stresses I went thru for so long. I definitely strongly caution anyone taking chantix to be under close watch for the symptoms I experienced.
In the long run perhaps it was fortuitous that it all went down. I' certainly a great happier with my life now!
Sincerely, David

Question/Comment:
Im a 27 yo/m and been on Chantix for about 9 weeks and already Im finding that im forgetting to take the pills and having no problems continuing to not smoke or crave. Chantix is the "miracle Pill" I always talked about as a teen when people told me I shouldnt start smoking. I took the pills as directed and by day 7 or 8 i stopped completely and havent restarted or even tryed. The main side effect i noticed was a funny taste in my mouth like i just ate an old cigarette butt. That just made it even easier to quit. Now every time i see someone smoking or smell it(like never b4) I just laugh to my self and think "poor fool" wasting all that life and money on those stupid things.......MIRACLE PILL!!!!!

Question/Comment:
I've just started taking chantix about 1 week ago. My side effect is mainly the drowsiness. I haven't gotten the nause yet and really hope i don't, I'll really go through changes. Anyway I still get the urge to smoke and often do. Any suggestions as to when i should really stop smoking. Although I was able to make a pack last 3 days which way out of the norm for me. Please let me know.

Answer/Reply:
I did not quit in two weeks, like the instructions said, I realized that it wasnt the nicotine I was craving but the habit. I smoked alot for 25 years. I wasnt getting anything from the cigarettes, so I started to target my worst smoking times. I started in my van, no smoking I have mints for whenever I wanted a cigarette. Where my ashtray was I put sunflower/pumkin seeds. And sugar free candy. I woke up three days before my first months prescription was done and said this is it. I had weaned my self to 3 cigarettes a day by doing the above. I am now at 30 days smoke free, it is still a struggle everyday but I think it is about tricking you brain with mints and seeds etc. At first the pill made me sleepy, the second month and now I am feeling nauses right after the pill, it goes away though and also I get dizzy sometimes. It is a pain but the money I am saving in cigarettes is worth it.

My name is Carolyn, I am 62 years old.
I used Chantrix and stopped smoking after the 1st month, my insurance would not pay for it so I paid out of pocket. I refused to lose my money so after my supply ended so did my smoking. I still think about smoking often, but not enough to start back smoking, it has become a fleeting thought, not an urge. I had no side effect.

Question/Comment:
This is my experience with chantix. I hope itâs helpful to someone out there.
My name is Stella, i'm 36.
I started taking chantix on or about September 15, 2008. My last cigarette was the night of October 4th (I remember this because I was at a friend's wedding) and I havenât had one since.
I smoked roughly a pack a day (more if I was on vacation or out at a bar/club) for over 20 years. Taking chantix was the best thing I ever did, period.
While on the drug, I still carried cigarettes with me everywhere I went but only had one when I felt I needed to. I continued to smoke for about 20 days after starting the chantix. I then continued to take chantix for about a month after that.
The side effects I experienced were nausea right after taking the pill, but it only lasted about 15 minutes or so, and a change in the way some foods tasted - and that goes away when you stop taking the drug. I also broke out in acne as if I was going through puberty again, although Iâm not really positive that this was a result of taking the drug.
Definitely voice any concerns you may have about side effects to your doctor before starting the drug. The ones I experienced fortunately were tolerable.
Life after smoking:
It was a little strange in the beginning to not have a cigarette during times that you normally would as a smoker, like after a meal, with a drink, or while driving. But itâs not really an urge to smoke, itâs more of a feeling that something is missing. That feeling disappears after a while, and I have never felt the need, still to this day, to go buy a pack.
Being around smokers once you stop is a little strange as well, because you donât really miss the actual inhaling of the smoke but rather the act of smoking (if that makes any sense). I think this falls back to that "routine" thing. Iâm not going to lie, this one took a little more restraint on my part, but it gets easier every time and the smell of the smokers breath after they've put it out is enough of a deterrent.
All I can say is that I never thought Iâd be able to quit. I tried the patch (a couple of times) but I became dependant on that, and also tried hypnosis, which worked for only 4 days. I would have anxiety if I left the house without my cigarettes, or had to take a long flight somewhere, or even the thought of one day quitting!!
I never thought that I would actually do it. I think the reason this worked for me was because I wasnât forced to quit on a certain day or once I started taking the drug - no anxiety!! - you just gradually stop feeling the need or urge to smoke. The program on the Chantix website suggests picking a âquit dayâ but I knew I didnât have to. I knew I was on chantix and kept telling myself "you'll just stop wanting them" and I eventually did.
Thanks for reading!

used chantix myself a second time to quit smoking. it really does work. yes, there are some problems with stopping the use of chantix. i had to wean myself off of it to make sure i would be okay. i went through some times after my first use of chantix ( it wasn't prescribed to me properly and i didn't use the get quit program they offer with it..which was even more a tremendous help..IF..you use it).

GREAT!..not a doc but former smoker ,thanks to chantix, and use benzos..lorazepam, diazepam etc. please make sure you psyche yourself not just daily but multiple times a day when you are ready to stop the chantix. you may want to wean yourself as i did..it seems to be the kinder, gentler way! benzos are downs; even if u still have a uterus/periods...YOU WILL BE WEEPY AT TIMES maybe even slightly hyper-sensitive. KNOW THIS and use it to your advantage..do NOT LET THE EMOTIONS AND THOUGHTS PULL YOU UNDER. YOU are in control. snap yourslef out of an 'episode' before you allow it time to take root. I started Chantix 1/3/08. I stopped smoking on 1/17/08. I was smoke free for 6 months. I quit taking Chantix because a) it was $150/mo.; b) it made me very agitated and my doctor put me on paxil to chill me out; c) I had very vivid weird dreams; and d) it made me stupid and I couldn't remember ANYTHING. I started smoking after 6 months and am back up to 2 packs per day. Plus, I'm still on the paxil (which also makes me stupid). But at least now, I can remember what my next sentence is going to be.

I took Chantix along with antidepressant Prestiq for 5 weeks, quit smoking on my quit date after first week, only side effect was nausea, until the end of the 5th week, when I realized I had lost interest in doing anything or going anywhere, looked around the house at what needed to be done, then just sat back down on couch, or layed down, which is definitly not something I do. This had been going on most of the 5th week before I realized that I was being depressed. I got off the Chantix 3 weeks ago and am still having bouts of nausea. I smoked 4 cigs one day when I got stressed, and 1 yesterday, don't know why. I had thoughts of smoking all through the day when I was taking Chantix but didn't want to act on them. The benifits outway the side effects. I just want to say if you or anyone around you think you are acting different and lose interest, talk to you doctor immediatly or just get off of the Chantix till you can talk to them

I have smoked for 54 years and the effects of Chantix are not as bad as the effects of smoking.
I have used Chantix off and on for several years.
I know I need to quit and physically I can but mentally I need it.
My lungs are ruined. If I dont smoke I have so much more breath and feel better. I do have some dreams but not like before. I still have stomach upsets but not as ofter as before' I also have some headaches along.
I just tell myself that they are just dreams.
I take an over-the-counter med for the upset stomach and Tylenol for the headache.
I think my cravings are mental like some of you do. I think if i had someone here to occupy my time I wouldnt smoke.

Question/Comment:
I've been taking Chantix off and on for over a year. Costs a fortune. But so does cigarettes in Texas with a $1 a pack sin tax. Last year this time I made it 6 weeks but still looked for excuses to smoke and then did. Went through a time where I didn't buy them and only smoked a few a day instead of a pack and a half. Finally made up my mind to quit and I have completed 6 weeks and still going strong. I am also on many other meds including Wellbutrin for several years. I am looking forward to the end of the 12 week program and backing off some of the meds. The dreams are incredible. Many I have trouble knowing if it happened or was a dream. My oldest brother used Chantix and quit and didn't have the dream issues. I quit for 8 1/2 years when my youngest child was born, cold turkey. I know I can do this. The only way to do it, regardless of meds is you HAVE TO WANT TO QUIT! Nothing can make you quit, it can only be an aid in the process.

You're not kidding, it is bad stuff for some. I felt suicidal, insomnia, weird-vivid dreams, and just felt wacked out. It took me from a fairly happy person to one that sat a had tears for no reason. Really, truly felt like I NEEDED to die, that I was worthless... took me into severe depression. I was given a heads up about possible psychotic episodes, maybe a little bit of dreaming.. never thought it could possibly be so severe. I quit Chantix on my own, and in 2 days was feeling better. Didn't do a thing about smoking, made me smoke more cause I was so depressed. 1 yr later, a bout of very severe pneumonia and the patch has me stopped from smoking. If I have to wear the patch the rest of my life, oh well. I am now a non-smoker. this isn't to say in the first 2 weeks of the patch there wasn't a couple slips, but now there hasn't been in 4 weeks. Got 2 more weeks on the 21mg level cause the slips made me start my time over again. Looks like this is going to do it this time. Took me getting seriously ill, to know now that I HAVE to quit smoking!! A strong desire to quit seems to really do the trick.

Sounds like you had some underlying issues. You should have told your doctor you had psych issues and they wouldn't have put you on it.
Chantix doesn't make you stop smoking. It simply helps you tell your self NO.
Try taking Chantix earlier in the evening even mid afternoon. Exercise a little before you go to bed and your nightmares should turn into pretty cool dreams. I actually get upset when I don't have the vivid dreams. I love them.

I understand where you are coming from, and like me, you forgot to follow the directions. You have to WANT to quit. Thats first and foremost. You can do anything for 10 minutes at a time. I have been on Chantix for 2 months Christmas Day. I have slipped a couple of times and gone right back to being a non-smoker. The "slips" I know were caused by my mind, and not by cravings from my body. This is not a drug that completely takes away your free choice, you have to be strong and fight your mind against smoking. My brother quit smoking 25 years ago, and to this day if life gets stressful, he reaches for imaginary cigs. He still has not smoked. He told me to quit for 10 minutes at a time for the rest of my life.

The first instruction on ANY smoking drug will tell you you have to quit smoking.
These aren't magic pills. But... If you keep telling yourself you are going to quit it will just happen naturally.
It can't be a counter effect. Chantix has nothing to do with nicotine.
Try exercising, eating right and telling yourself the benifit of not smoking is greater than that of the smoke in the first place. Then the Chantix will begin to help you. First you have to want to help yourself.
