Global Patient Feedback for Lyrica (Pregabalin) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I had spinal fusion of the 3,4,5, and 6 vertabrates last sumer. It was the wrost thing I have ever done! I hurt all the time and now have to take Lyrica twice a day and muscle relaxors and percocet every four hours! I have a hiper sensation now to my upper thigh that I never had before the surgery! Without the Lyrica I go insane because of the hiper sensativity. I have never been one to take medicine but now I can't go without it!
If anyone is thinking about having this type of surgery please think three times before having it done!
If anyone knows a way to get off all of these drugs, please help me!!

Answer/Reply:
From my personal life with surgeries and Specialists I would recommend the Neuro stimulating Pain Theraphy as this is the only one item that has reduced my pain by 50%.Yes,you have to go for an outpatient surgeryfirst time to try the unit for a week or two. If you get relief like I did then in about a month you go in to Hospital again on outpatient basis, have the tine rods installed in your spine as also a Battery pack in your hip.The battery is good for roughly 3 weeks then you have simple unit that you charge it first then you apply it over the battery pack,by the way it will let you know if it's over the pack.it takes roughly 30 min to recharge the Battery pack.Again the unit will let you know when it's fully charged so you can remove it and place it on a recharge unit that you plug in to your Electrical receptacle. You have nothing to loose on the trial time, this way you will know if you want to have the unit installed by a Neuro-Sugoeon. wonderer111@myway.com If you want more info then write me. Question/Comment:
What is Meridia? Someone posted to take it to lose weight while on lyrica. I am also taking Methotrexate and Humira for RA. I also take Oxybutynin for incontenence, Triamterene/HCTZ fluid pill and 1MG Folic Acid . The Methotrexate is only taken 1 day a week, and the Humira I inject 1 day every two weeks. Can anyone give me any information on this? Thanks.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Meridia is a weight loss medication and is thought to work by appetite suppression. There is a drug interaction between Meridia and Lyrica, which may cause increased drowsiness and difficulty breathing. Meridia may also increase your blood pressure and heart rate, so it should only be used under close supervision of your doctor if you have high blood pressure or heart problems. If you are concerned about losing weight, it is a good idea to ask your doctor about which treatment options for weight loss are best for you.

Has anyone encountered the high cost of Lyrica? I have to pay $210 amonth and that is with good insurance. Has anyone had any luck with any generic types of any of these drugs? I have tried Tramadol, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Fentanyl patch, Gabapentin, Lyrica and now they want me to try Topamax but I could not afford that either at $80 a month. Any suggestions would be great. Good health and good luck to all that may read this. Thank you.

Answer/Reply:
Yes I have the same problem with the high cost of Lyrica. I have protested my insurance companies (MedicareRx & Anthem) refusal to cover it for my neuropathic pain. My doctors have also written to them on my behalf with no success. They respond by saying it is not approved by the FDA for my problem. We all agree that Lyrica works but the insurance companies must wait for the FDA. I am also using a Fentanyl patch & morphine tabs for my pain and have no difficulty with insurance coverage for them.
Has anybody found a solution to this expensive problem with Lyrica?

1. find out the name of the drug manufactuer who makes ur medication...
2. go to the manufacturers web site...
3. browse the site to find ""prescription assistance program""
or something using words to that effect...
4. ALL manufacturers will supply their meds for FREE
or at least greatly discounted to folks in need...
5. manufacturers will require that ur doctor who is prescribing the
med complete some paperwork for them before they will help u...
6. some manufacturers will send the meds ONLY to ur doctors office
so u will have to pick them up there...

Question/Comment:
Gee am I glad I found this site! I have severe spinal stenosis, fibromyalgia, a disc problem, and
arthritis. I take Lryica 2 - 3 x a day. I take Celexa, for some major depression, along with some Nabumetone (anti-Inflamatory), and Zyrtec (for hives). I have been taking these for 2 years now. If you check all the side effects of Lyrica... I have them All !!!! BUT I cannot tolerate all the pain with out it. Then throw in the Celexa and Nabutone and When I am awake I have:::::: 1. Fuzz in my brain 2. Shortness of breath 3. Excessive swelling in my hands and ankles. 4. Excessive Weight Gain 5. Dry Mouth 6. Horrible Hives 7. Irregular sleep patterns, 8. Trouble focusing 9. Numbness in my left finger tips, just to name the major side effects ! ! !
I have about 3-4 hours a day that I am somewhat alert. And the weight gain is Horrible and it wont come off. Partly because of the drugs (they all can cause weight gain). Partly because I cant walk, sit, or stand for more that a few minutes. I have to keep my back in a certain position or I feel extreme pain. I use a walker to keep me stable, even. AND all this happened 2 years ago. My energetic, on the go life, is gone. - - - - - - -
I have tried to reduce doses and get off these, but I cannot take the pain, and I get so very depressed I cry all the time. I use to be the the life of a party, now I have become a recluse of sorts, I dont want to go anywhere that I dont have to go. I certainly dont want anyone to see me like this. And I tire so easily. Just getting ready to go somewhere tires me, so I have to push myself to go.
BUT TO END ON a better note ..... I had execellent health all my life, always doing and going, atheletic, a true shop til ya drop gal, and always on the go. I am blessed with great family and friends and more love than I can say. So I count my blessings, take my meds and do what I can when I can.
And yes I have told the doctor, but it all comes down to managing pain ... and I can't without Lyrica. It seems I have no life, but the life I have is still far better than the alternative. - - - - -
I wish you all well and thank you for all the postings. I thought I was the oly one who experienced these terrible side effects. Any alternatives that anyone knows about???

A stronger nervous system gives higher tolerance for pain. And improves immunity. An adoptogenic herb called ASHWAGANDHA makes a world of difference in my life. Maybe gingko or 81 mil aspirin would increase your circulation. That may help a little with side effects. Better circulation promotes body flushing the junk out easier. Gingko will increase your circulation. More blood oxygen to your brain may cure the fussiness.
Yes, I am an herbal nut. I feel blessed because of it. I have bone spurs, scolliosis, stenosis, arthritis all in the spine. Osteoporsis and high blood pressure too. And yes I feel good. Gingko made my bp med work better. Doc even noticed. I take generic ultram, zyrtec and bp med. I don't get inflamed because of all my herbs. I spend my money to stay well. Mom spends lots of hers because she isn't well.
You are truly blessed by loving family and friends.

I will try that big long word and also the Gingko. I knew there must be something that could help me .. but doctors usually do not tell you about anything they can't prescribe.
I will have a friend pick these up from health store, and take them and as soon as I see the difference I will be sure to let everyone know the help came from you and this site.

I wish you the best you sound like a sweetheart. I take 200mg 3x daily due to PHN. I had shingles now the nerves are damaged(I got shingles at 38 because I have ITP, which is a blood disease that basically causes the body to attack itself and weakens the immune system). I am gaining weight after starting on Lyrica one month ago. I take bipolar, depression, ITP and PHN medicine and they ALL cause weight gain too. I too was active and excercised regularly until I became sick, but the pain is too terrible to stop taking Lyrica. I will just live with the side effects. I am working closely with my doctor, so maybe I will try a weight loss drug(if he will prescribe it). Thanks all of you for listening or reading. Darrin

I am a 62 year old male with type II diabetes and neuropathy. I took Lyrica, 150 mg for about six weeks. It did not help my neuropathy, caused me to gain weight and the dizzness and general uncomfortableness. I spoke to my doctor and he took me off the medication. After a week or so, the symptoms were gone.
You mentioned Celebrex. I have never taken it. You say it isn't as strong as Lyrica, but were there any side effects? I have taken Viagra with no side effects. Since meds react differently with different peple, maybe I can try celebrex.

My biggest problem with Lyrica is the "fog" that I experience. There are times when I actually find myself zoning out while I am driving! I thought at first that it was just me, but after talking a friend who is also taking the stuff I discovered that it is happening to him as well. Anyone else?
As for the effectiveness? It really does a good job of controlling some of the chronic pain issues that I have following 6 major spine surgeries. I just wish that the zoning out thing wasn't happening. At 41 I am responsible for driving our teenage son everywhere & I would hate to have to quit taking this medication, but may not have a choice.

I am a 48 yr female that had lower back fusion (3 levels) 18 mths ago. I have been on Lyrica 100mg and Oxycodone (5 mg) and 2 reg strength Tylenol (650) 3x day since. I would recommend upping your Lyrica and decreasing your Oxy down to 5 mg. This might take care of pain while decreasing drowsiness. Lyrica has been a HUGE help for me but I had to increase the dosage to my current level to alleviate pain. I do not have any drowsiness with Lyrica. Try ANYTHING before back surgery!!! Hi Gus,
I would recommend getting off the hydrocodone/acetaminophen completely and uping the dose of lyrica. I was on the same meds and found it was less pain without the hydrocodone/acetaminophen. The drowsiness is from the hydrocodone/acetaminophen. Ask the doctor to up your dose of Lyrica. You will feel better and not so drowsy.

I had four major operations for severe occipital neuralgia, fusion on C2-C6 2x's plus I had cadaver bone replacing my vertabrae from a falling accident. I have been on Lyrica for about 6 years. I gained about 40 pounds from being in bed, resting and recouperating from these surgeries. I believe that it is very easy to gain weight on this medication, especially if you are taking something else including pain medication. I stopped this med for about 4 months and lost the majority of the weight. The side effects are quite weird. Some days I feel like I am floating and other days it gives me severe anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness, almost like I am high, well with this med you basically are. It is not considered a pain medication howver that is exactly what it is. Very powerful and helps with the nerve pain. Does anyone experience almost withdrawl symtoms if you don't take it all the time?

Iam thrilled with Lyrica! I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1999. I had been in pain for 5 years before I went to the rhumatoligist. It's hard to believe that was a decade ago.wow
Anyway, the drugs he gave me helped a little but there was never a time when I wasn't in pain.
When Lyrica came out for fibromyalgia I gave it a year in the population, (to see if anybody died from it etc.) and after that first year passed, I brought it up to my doctor. I think it's been close to a year that I have been taking it and the difference is amazing. In fact, I think I started feeling
better within 72 hours. I once described my firbomyalgia to someone as "walking around day in and day out with an entire hurtful bruise on over 90% of my body." It sure worked for me and I hope it works for you too. Deborah

You might try asking the doctor for a prescription for Meridia ... I found that it really helped me control cravings, and definitely helped me control my weight. It completely stopped the weight gain, and actually have lost 40 pounds during the past eight weeks. I have eaten healthy meals, and do not crave extras. Of course, it will depend on other medications that you are on, and any other health conditions, as to whether the doctor will prescribe it. It won't hurt to ask, and just may be your solution. It is a god-send for me! I cannot manage my pain level without the Lyrica. I have had complete hip replacement, and spinal fusion with plates, and suffer neuropathy in my lower legs. The sciatic pain is never ending. Lyrica is truly a golden pill for me. I can actually do a few things, and am loving living without so much pain! female, age 59

I also have Fibromyalgia and have just started on 75mg once a day but am now up to 75mg 2x a day. The 2nd day I felt really bloated and have felt that way up until my sister told me of a natural diuretic from onion juice. If you google onion juice or benefits of onion juice you will see why. Anyway, one of the side effects of Lyrica is urinary incontinence or constipation which i also get, and I believe this leads to big time bloating. So, after finding out about the benefits of an all natural onion juice diuretic, I decided to give it a try although it sounded gross to me. What I do is take a small pot and fill it up with water, cut up 1 spanish onion into quartered pieces and simmer the covered pot on low for 2 hours or untill onions are clear color. I drain the juice into easy to pour containers afterwards.. You only need the juice. I have 2 cups of onion juice a day, one in the morning and one at night. It actually tastes good with some honey in it and warmed up like honey tea. Anyway, I notice that the excess water weight is basically getting peed out as the onion juice kicks up your digestive system and is also great for constipation. Definitely keeps you regular. So, i really noticed that I have been losing weight by doing this everyday. But drink a lot of water to flush out the junk in your system. Try this for a few days and see what happens. I definitely feel that I lost weight. My clothes fit much better.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
I know how you feel about weight gain. I started out feeling really bloated with the Lyrica. And what helps to keep the weight off is to drink 2 cups of onion juice a day with some honey in it just like tea. i wrote this to someone else here as well, but take 1 spanish onion and cut up into 4 quarter pieces and simmer in a small full pot of water for 2 hours, drain juice only into containers and use this to make your tea with. 1 cup in the morning and one at night. this really makes you pee like no tomorrow and also very regular which is great for constipation. By getting rid of this excess fluids in your body, and maintaining it, you will lose weight. I saw results in 2 days. If you are peeing alot more that usual, this means it is working. And since onions are really good for your health and all natural, you don't have to worry about another drug or diuretic just the real old fashioned way of treating yourself. Try it! Just make sure to drink water to flush your system out.

For my FMS I'm taking Lyrica @ (2) 25mg. caps in morning and (2) 25mg. caps in evening = 100 mg. total. I am constantly sleeping... I take my pills just as I walk out the door so I can drive without fear of blurred vision and constant yawning.
For my high blood pressure, I've just increased the Lisinopril to 25mg. 1x/day. The dry cough is making me crazy!!
For my migraines I take Maxalt and that seems to be the only med that doesn't give me any side effects.
Weight gain is a side effect of Lyrica. The pill does not cause you to gain weight, it's side effect is increased appetite - which if you give in to it will, obviously, cause weight gain.
I am trying to drop several (a lot) of pounds to help with the FMS and blood pressure so I'm trying this regimen:
(1) pkt. Weight Control Oatmeal cereal @ 8:30 am
(1) small banana @ 9:30
(1) container Activia @ 10:30
(4) wedges of orange @ 11:30
(1) small salad loaded with raw veggies and/or crunchy fruit (apple/pear...) @ 12:30
(1) snack size low fat cottage cheese @ 1:30
(8) Fit & Active caramel rice cakes @ 2:30
(4) wedges of orange @ 3:30
I drink 64 oz. of water within this time frame.
then dinner @ 6:00 (portion control), (1) apple w/honey for dessert and that's it. I usually have a diet tea for my drink at dinner and then water if I can.
I've found that by eating something every hour keeps my brain occupied and my stomache satisfied.... I've got my fingers crossed that I will lose some pounds and this curbs my appetite to snack on not so good things because I have a food item ready to go.
Hope this is helpful to you.

I feel Neurontin works better than lyrica for my neuropathy. My doctor wanted me to stop neurontin when I went on lyrica but the pain just got worse. However with my neuropathy the shooting pains and jerks I experience in my feet and hands did get better with the lyrica so now I am on both meds...........

I left Neurontin and started Lyrica. I was taking the max dose and not getting relief. I now take 2 pills a day instead of 8. Lyrica doesn't do 100%, but it sure beats the heck out of going without! I do wish you luck. 64 yr. old Female

I was on Neurontin & switched to lyrica & found out it works better. I take it twice a day & have put on over 50 lbs. Also my legs & feet swell so my docter put me on a diaretic. I am also type 2 diabetic but the neurapathy is painful if I don't take the lyrica still I prefer it over Neurontin. I am also at the prostate age taking at times Flomax & Uroxatral & they also contribute to leg swelling. Good luck in choosing what's best for you.

Some people I've talked to said that Neurotin worked great for them, but it made me want to commit suicide! I laid on my couch in the fetal position for 3 hrs. scared ot death I was going to do something to hurt myself, all the while knowing I didn't want to.
I've been taking Lyrica on and off for over 2 yrs due to L4 & L5 disc replacement and plate implantation and nerve damage due to the surgery. At first, I was prescribed 25mg two at a time, twice per day, but didn't see much difference. I now take 200mg, one/day and it is helping a lot more. Unfortunately, due to my other meds, I can't sit down w/o falling asleep. If I'm awoken at night, I feel like I'm drunk and can't walk straight nor talk w/o slurring. My mouth is extremely dry 24 hrs/day!! The pain is horrible when I'm off it, but not being able to drive or watch a movie with my family isn't so great either. Four of my meds added to Lyrica cause excessive sedation, so I 'm going to talk to my Dr. about decreasing my dose and taking it twice/day again instead one big dose.

Hello
I enjoy this website but have one complaint. The Star rate should be more clear, This patient seems to like the medication but rates it with no stars (I think)
The stars seems to be lit in some but not others.
I have big issues with Lyrica-It works like a wonder drug for moon and pain reduction but wears off in two weeks (sigh) I have incresed but felt like a zombie. If I quit the drug for two weeks and then re-use, it works again (for two weeks)
Weird!

I am surprised you are taking lorezapam with the Lyrica. That is one of the drugs that the Lyrica website suggests that you do not use together. It can cause more dizziness and sleepiness. I have take Lorezapam at times for anxiety. I have just started on Lyrica for occipital neuralgia on the side of my head. Just 75 mg once a day, but I can increase it to two if I need to. How long does this drug take before you feel some relief from the symptoms?

I too have fibromyalgia and RA,also OA and have had disc removal with fusion. Twenty years untreated fibro. Then doc tried all the antidepressents. Those side effects were terrible. I could barely function. The cymbalta was the best as far as side effects went. Since I've been on lyrica the pain is almost gone. But, I have paid the price with side effects. I've had every side effect there could possible be. At least thay didn't last long. The only real problem is the weight gain. In 3months I've gained almost 20 pounds. I was already over weight and cannot afford to gain any more. I don't know what to do. My RA doctor is going to take me off lyica if I don't start losing soon. Any ideas? I have a treadmill buy, the OA in my knees and hips make it almost impossible to do much walking.

Question/Comment:
I have degenerative disc disease and I'm currently on Fentanyl and Percocet, which work fairly well in controlling the pain and have almost no side effects for me. About two years ago my doctor prescribed Lyrica (I don't recall the dosage but it was about mid-range). After taking it a week, the worst two months of my life followed - the side effects were horrendous. I was dopey all day, but had extreme insomnia all night. When I did sleep I had vivid, violent, strange nightmares and night-sweats. I became depressed, anxious and while usually very mild-mannered, suddenly had no tolerance for anyone or anything and was in a constant state of extreme irritation. Worse, it had absolute NO effect on any of my pain - if anything, because my muscles felt weak and "shakey", the pain was more unbearable. I never want to be in that state of mind again - I can barely begin to describe it and the longer I took the lyrica the worse the side effects became. I honestly believe that if I had stayed on it another month I'd have become suicidal - it was just that awful. I know it can help some people, but I believe that anyone who is prescribed this medication should be warned about the possible side-effects since while perhaps it may be rare to have such extreme side effects, I would say in my case they were also very dangerous.

I have fibromyalgia and am 40 yrs old suffered from this since I was 16 so you can imagine how frustrated I am still! not had quality of life! anyway was recommended that lyrica or pregabalin works for patients with FMS so thought wd recommend to my GP.
I started on 50mg 3 x daily, then 150mg x 2 daily, and now 150 mg x 3 daily. I have also stopped my previous medication of diazepam of 5 mg x 2 daily, so experiencing side effects!!! Not improved yet but am having restful sleep now, and some good days but am unsure how long it will take to feel some benefit! am hopeful though, but a long way to go yet.....diazpema side effects from reducing then stopping whilst taking lyrica now is painful, but am sure will disappear sooner rather than later........anyone else had a similar experience? I still work although it has been extremely difficult with my FMS returning from the side effect of it all, but am reassured to wait whilst the tablets work, and the others have withdrawn! I have a clerical job, and work 4 days so not too bad...... I hate having fibromyalgia and have tried so many things from massage, accupuncture to herbal remedies, simple paracetemol, swimming, exercise do help, and resorted to diazepam as it did work, but made me tired! advised not good in long run and dangerous with regards to heart! so now taking pregabalin or lyrica as it is knows. iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
This will probably not pass the publishability test, as I have negative to say about lyrica. I have been "sick" for over 8 years, so have had the "diagnosis" of fibromyalgia. I was prescribed lyrica about 6 months ago, as I was experiencing quite a flare. Within a few days of taking lyrica, I was becoming progressively debilitated. After a week, I could not roll over in my bed, nor rise or sit without much toil and labor! I slipped off my chair in attempt to stand and could NOT get up from the floor. I had to scoot myself over to a substantial chair and pull myself up. It felt almost as if I could feel the pain moving through my back and into the back of my head after taking my night's dose. I had not seen my specialist in a few years, and had just accepted that pain and insomnia were part of my life, but this degree of disablity spurred me to make an appointment with him. Even after 1 day off of lyrica I began to see some improvement. After several bloodtests, my doctor has been able to conclusively diagnose my rheumatoid arthritis. I suppose it was just "brewing" for years, but tests had not shown it before. Part of the problem, I'm sure, was that I quit going to my specialist and continued to be treated by my general practitioner for fibromyalgia! I don't know why, and I've not seen anyone else report such side-effect, but I have ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT that lyrica almost crippled me, and if I had just continued on not believing it was the meds, I might have died! But, just as with so many still not believing fibro is real, I don't think anyone has believed how Lyrica affected me.
I was literally almost to the point of not being able to walk! I do hope that someone will read this and believe me!!! I'm sure lyrica is right for some people...probably those who really have "fibromyalgia," but it can be crippling for others...perhaps those of us who actually have rheumatoid arthritis!! Undoubtably, this information will be useful for some others!

Question/Comment:
I always had soreness in my lower back (L5 & S1) but what I did not know was that I had a herniated disc. Unfortunately in March 2007 that disc "leaked" out or "ruptured" and I was diagnosed with Spinal Canal Stenosis. The pain I was in was unbearable. The nerve endings of my sciatica became impaired due to this rupture causing me so much pain down my right leg all the way down to my toes. I could not walk, stand or even sit. Finally I went to my primary physician who prescribed Lyrica. Then I started going to a pain management doctor which was a wonderful experience. She truly helped me as well. I have been on this since April 2007 and it has helped me significantly. I take 75mg 4x a day. Sometimes I feel a little more tired, but I basically feel so much better. However due to this situation, I was in PT 3x a wk, which was fantastic. Now I exercise at home and stretch the proper way and to keep myself from getting stiff, which happens time to time. Sometimes I feel a little more tired some days. But I don't really have a significant side effects. I am so glad I am on this drug. Again it works for some better than others, as we all react differently to any medication we are prescribed.

I have spinal stenosis and I found that accupuncture not only took away most of the pain but gave me more mobility. It is not a cure but it is an aid. Sinced diagnosed 18 years ago, I have had both knees replaced seven years apart and my spine rebuilt las Sept, upper and Jan, Lower. I still am able to walk but only about three to four minutes and then need to sit.

I forgot to add, I too use Lyrica but it is for my Neuropathy. It helped for a while with 75 Mg, but then needed to go to 150 Mg a day, and now asking doctor if I can go to 225 a day, as the pain is returning. I also use 50 Mg of trazadone for nerve pain in my shins from first knee surgery.

Your experience with Lyrica same as mine. Had
to increase dosage for same results. Am now trying to eliminate Lyrica, due to all the side effects. Down to 200mg per day. Metnax seems to have the same good results without side effects.

Question/Comment:
I started Lyrica and Topomax BOTH a week ago and suddenly cannot remember much. Sometimes waking up not remembering what day it is, where my husband went, what my friend and I just talked about and I run my own company. I now have a sign that says what day it is and was just in case..I am organized beyond imagination and am pretty much freaking out. BUT my pain is so much better AND I just went through a HUGE tramatic situation so it is hard to say it is the medication because it was very tramatic. I don't know what to do. I had 2 surgeries on my knee this year so I am on Vicodin, I am Bipolar so take meds for that and I have Fybro so am taking the Lyrica for that....sometimes I feel like saying forget it and just stop taking everything!
I don't get on this website often, if you have an answer shel80015@yahoo.com thanks

The one great thing that it has done is taken the pain away from my legs. I dont feel loopy or funny. I have notice that I do gain weight over night, not sure if its from this medication or others that I am on, excample: Carisorprdol 350mg,Hydrocodone,Cynbalta 30mg.
