Global Patient Feedback for Crestor (Rosuvastatin) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
My experience with Crestor has been positive except I started having significant short term memory loss about a year ago, within a few months after starting the standard prescribed dose. When I had a routine, follow up visit with my prescribing physician and questioned him about the possible cause of my STML he denied it could be from the Crestor because " it doesn't cross the brain barrier like many of the other 'statins' do", and he added he doesn't put Crestor in the 'statin' category of drugs. On that visit he decreased my dose of Crestor by half because my numbers were so low. About six weeks later all of my previous memory problems had disappeared! I was able to focus better on new information, recall things more easily, etc. He has no explanation for the change (no other changes had been made in medications). I remain on 5mg/day of Crestor and am tolerating it well. I understand memory loss is one of the less common SE of Crestor. What can you tell me about this that can help me discuss this intelligently with my prescribing physician? I am willing to continue to take the current dose being prescribed; I am not willing to go back on a higher dose if he thinks I eventually need to because of my previous experience with STML.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
A small percent of iGuard patients, less than 1%, report memory problems. It is not a common side effect, but it has been experienced by iGuard members taking Crestor. It sounds like your side effects may be dose related in your case - the higher dose produced the side effect.
Posted: 2009-09-23 11:15:19
Answer/Reply:
I can understand why you wouldn't want the higher dose if it induces short term memory loss. Nobody wants that. In discussing this with your physician, keep in mind that the human brain uses roughly 25% of your body's cholesterol. Cholesterol plays a vital role in nerve synapses in the brain. Researching the vital roles cholesterol plays in human physiology will help you gain insight to why these side effects occur.

Roughly 25% of your body's cholesterol is used by the brain. About 50% of the dry weight of the cerebral cortex is cholesterol. Cholesterol plays a vital role in nerve synapses in the brain.

I was put on 40mg of crestor and within a two months i had muscle pain. my doctor cut it in half for this reason but also because the dose I was taking was more than I needed according to test. It also appeared since I have been on medicine for this it has caused my hair to fall out slowly. I was on lipitor and could not use it due to pain and that is why i was switched to crestor.

is 1 1/2 percent reduction in plaque significant. How did they measure that? I suppose a small reduction beats growth.

Plaque reduction is measured by ultrasound. A reduction of 1.5% is a small percent, but a decrease is definitely in the right direction.

Question/Comment:
I had severe muscle cramping on Zocor and had to stop it in In Feb. In late May, Doc switched me to low dose Crestor 3/week and add Niacin coQ10 and Omega 3. Two days ago, I started having constant muscle aches in my lower back, buttocks and hamstrings (both sides, but worse on left). I've spoken to my doctor (who's running blood tests) and the pharmacist asking about possible interaction and nobody seems to be thinking its a drug interaction, though pharmacist said more likely than Cipro I just completed taking for a UTI. I now read about Niacin and Crestor on this site. Why do you know about interaction and med. professionals in my area are discounting niacin/crestor factor given my documented history. I'm thinking I should stop Niacin and see if pain goes away - at least until blood work comes back. What would you do?
44 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Approximately 15% of iGuard patients reported muscle aches and weakness while taking the Crestor. Crestor is also a "statin", the same class of medications that Zocor belongs to. Crestor can cause similar muscle aches that happened while taking Zocor. The product labeling for Crestor states that the risk of muscle effects may be increased in severity or frequency when Crestor is used in combination with niacin. The product labeling suggest that the dose of Crestor should be reduced when used in combination with niacin. Although your doctor has prescribed a lower dose of Crestor, it does not entirely eliminate the chance of muscle side effects.
Urinary tract infections can sometimes cause symptoms of back ache, especially in the area where the kidneys are located. Until your bloodwork is confirmed it will be difficult to make an accurate assessment as to the exact cause of your symptoms. If the pain continues and or worsens you should contact your doctor right away to determine if continuing the medication is the best plan for you.

I have been on Lipitor and I had terrible muscle pains to my arms. Dr. change me to pavacol and Niacin and my cholestrol had a slow lowering affect. My Trigils were high since I am a diabetic too. I was put on fenbrate or something like that and my trigils have not come down as expected. Now I will be on Crestor and see if that helps. I know the Niacin has to be the one that a person has a flush affect to work; as that what my Dr. says. Now I will not notice if my arms will hurt since I also been diagnois with Fibromylgia, and I am always in pain in my muscles. I have tried a journal when a new treatment or meds that are new to my system and see about 2 wks and see if there is any diffrents to my body response. I hope this helped.

I am no longer taking Crestor, but have switched back to Lipitor. The muscle stiffness and general weakness began very slowly until I wanted to rest in bed often. Reading side effects in this blog helped me realize that the symptoms started with my Cresor samples. It still took at least 7 weeks for me to feel 'normal' again.

Metformin
Celexa
Ramipril
Aspirin *
Rosuvastatin
Levothyroxine
Do any of these cause fish allergies to devleope? And I know that you can't eat Grapefurit with Lipitor but can you eat it with Rosuvastatin?
51 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Allergies can develop at any time in a person's life. Medications such as those listed above do not tend to cause allergies to food to develop.
Rosuvastatin (Crestor) does not seem to have the interaction with grapefruit that Lipitor does. People who take rosuvastatin do not need to avoid grapefruit products. If you are taking a statin drug (other than rosuvastatin), be sure to talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether you can drink grapefruit juice or use other grapefruit products.

Question/Comment:
In all our discussion concerning side effects from statin drugs, has anyone stopped to ponder the benefit side of the drug? I mean, we all know that crestor lowers cholesterol and it does that very well. But when I say BENEFIT i am talking about the drugs ability to prevent a heart attack or stroke. After all, that is the ultimate reason for taking the drug, isn't it?
In the recent JUPITER trial Crestor was put to the test. The results were hailed as remarkable with an advertised "RELATIVE" risk reduction of 47%.
But how many people had to take the drug to be spared a heart attack or stroke in the 1.9 years the trial ran? You may be surprised since these numbers get swept under the rug and ignored, yet they are published in the table one endpoints of the JUPITER study.
STROKE ALONE; How many had to take the drug to prevent one stroke over the course of nearly two years? The answer is 288 people.
HEART ATTACK ALONE: How many people had to take crestor to prevent one heart attack over the course of 2 years? The answer is 241.
COMBINED HEART ATTACK, STROKE AND DEATH FROM CV CAUSES: How many people had to take crestor for two years to prevent an event in combination of? The answer is 120 people.
These are actual NUMBER NEEDED TO TREAT scores from table #1 endpoints from the JUPITER trial, and represent ABSOLUTE risk reductions, yet you won't hear anything about it in the drugs advertising.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
There is no drug interaction between Crestor and Coreg listed in the iGuard drug interaction system.
Baby aspirin or low dose aspirin (81mg) does not appear to affect blood pressure or how Coreg works. If you are taking more than 81 mg of aspirin daily, you should discuss your aspirin use with your doctor. High doses of aspirin may affect how well Coreg can control your blood pressure. More importantly, high doses of aspirin increase your risk of bleeding complications and should only be used under the direction of your doctor.

Question/Comment:
I've been on statins for 5 years now. I tolerated Lipitor OK. But my doc switched me to Crestor about a year ago. I seemed to have no bad reaction to the 5 mg dose. Then about 6 months ago he doubled the dose to 10 mg. I started having pain in the left elbow. It gradually became worse and then the same started with the right elbow. He told me to stop the Crestor and I did 5 weeks ago. But the pain in both elbows is still there and even seems worse now. He just took me off Niaspan ER saying that could be the cause. But after 3 days my pain in both elbows seems as bad or even worse. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THESE SYMPTOMS? Can anyone help me please? I've also had kidney stones for the first time this past year and am wondering if there is any connection???

IF 11 SPOTS OUT OF 18 HURT , IT MAY BE FIBRO.

Question/Comment:
My doctor has put me on 5mg of Crestor, now I have muscle pain and weakness in my chest, back, arms, legs and feet. Plus I am tired alot and cannot seem to lose weight no matter what my diet. I am also on amlodipine 5mg. I must have gone thru 4 or 5 blood pressure meds before amlodipine, although this one seems to have less side effects. I would be interested in any natural vitamins or suggestions.
Thanks to everyone, I did find a lot of people with the same symptoms, that the drug website did not list in depth. I am beginning to feel that I will take my chances without this drug if I am going to feel this bad all the time.

Sorry to hear about your dis-satisfaction and lack of results with Crestor. I've been taking it for several years now, 40 mg daily. Some of those side effects you discussed I have experienced
in much greater degree but have never associated them with the Crestor.... since I'm on a multitude of other RX's for Osteo Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Spinal Stenosis, high cholesterol, and Chronic Fatigue. I wished it were possible for me to say that Crestor is responsible for all my problems, but it is NOT. And no, my cholesterol is still not back down to normal levels, my trig's are up to 400 which is entirely too high. I exercise daily, watch my diet, and take my meds when I'm supposed too..... I'm no proponent of Crestor, but it does seem to help, is not solving the problem, but doing a better job than Zocor or Lipitor which I have tried both. Wish you luck with your problem. I just wished my problem was singular like yours.

Question/Comment:
I am a 51yr old female. I started taking Crestor 2 months ago. Last week I woke up with severe pain in my thoracic spine. 4 days ago the pain was so bad in my left side and back that the doctor did a STAT CT of my abdomen and pelvis and T-spine and L-spine x-rays. I have been in bed on high power pain pills and muscle relaxers for the last 4 days. My blood sugar is going up. I do not have diabetes, but my BS was 262 today. I stopped taking the Crestor 4 days ago at the doctors request.
Do you think that the Crestor caused this and if so how long will it stay in my system?
52 year old Female
Posted: 2009-03-29 20:16:05
iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Muscle pain is a common side effect of Crestor. If your pain in your thoracic spine is related to muscle pain, it may be a possibility that Crestor is the cause of the pain. A physical examination and lab tests will allow your doctor to provide you with a more definite answer for the cause of your pain.
Increase blood glucose has been reported with Crestor use, but it is not a very common side effect. Typically Crestor will be removed from your body within 3 to 4 days.

Hi..my father took Crestor for high cholesterol, the effects weren't very good though:
1. He suffers from asthma and Crestor made his breathing a little harder.
2. Crestor caused him muscle pain and he now suffers from Muscular Dystrophy from it.
3. His cholesterol levels weren't decreasing that much.
Im sure that for females there might be a slight difference, but I think that the best way to go is to watch what you eat, exercise, and if you must resort to medication, go for something herbal or natural. Hope this helps!

I eat a healthy diet, exercise daily working in construstion. Sometimes diet and exercise just is not enough. Herbs are not going to make a difference. The medication has lowered triglyceride and cholesterol levels to norm. Blodd preasure is perfect. Blood sugar still little bit high but acceptable. I have been on numerous cholesterol drugs, and most cause aches and muscle pain. Although Zetia didn't cause muscle pain, it also wasn't effective for me either. Crestor has been the only drug to bring down my cholesterol numbers. I do caution you though, about 5-6 weeks into taking a 5mg tablet daily, I started having chest and left arm pains that resemble a heart attack. No one knew what was causing it, and every test came out fine. After searching some forums and seeing that other people had chest pains on Crestor, I stopped taking it and within a day or two chest pains were nearly gone. Since Crestor was the only drug I've taken that lowered my Cholesterol any significant amount, I asked my doctor if I could take a half pill daily, and see if that would still reduce my cholesterol without the chest pains. I haven't had any pains since taking half the dosage, and my cholesterol went from 289 to 190.

I have been taking Cretor for 3 weeks - and it's absolutely having negative side effects, I feel sick & tired most for the day.... My Dr wants me to get a blood test at the end of my first month to see if the drug has lowered my LDL (which is 194). Can anyone tell me if this drug has had positive results lowering thier cholesterol?

I have been taking for only two weeks and I'm feeling the same way. Very fatigued and heacahes almost every day as well as general malaise. I, too, thought it might be flu, but does not appear to be.

Always check with your doctor. But consider maybe you have changed your diet and your body is reacting to that change?

I am a 60 year old female who was full of energy and after taking Crestor became extremely fatigued, had diarrhoea and a hard to explain feeling in the stomach. I have now changed to Lipidil, which I have only been on for 2 weeks, but so far no side affects.

I've been taking Crestor for over 2 years never had any eye problems as a result of side effedts.
First thing I would do is to check with your doctor. Second I would have myu eyes checked.

Always check with your doctor. Side effects should not last longer then you have taken Crestor. 12 days doen't make a history. I've been taking Crestor for more than 2 years and only had mirror leg pain. When I reported this to my doctor he cut my dosage and the leg pain went away.

Question/Comment:
I was put on Crestor and took it for about 4 weeks. I experience extreme leg pain and back pain to the extent I could barely walk. After being off it for about 3 weeks a lot of the pain has subsided. I still have some pain in my legs. Lipitor and some other statins did the same thing to me. I had been on Zocor before the Crestor and had some muscle pain but my doctor thought the Crestor might be better. It sure wasn't for me!

Answer/Reply:
Keep in mind that 50% of heart attacks happen to those who have low to normal cholesterol, and almost half of first time heart attacks happen to people who have their LDL well below target range.
If you have not already been diagnosed with heart disease,Crestor clearly states in its literature and advertising "Has not been shown to prevent heart disease"

My husband had a heart attack in June, 2008. His cholestorol levels were fine. He had to have a quadruple bypass.
