Question/Comment:

Anyone else taking 100 units of Lantus both morning and night? It seems excessive to me, and my blood sugar is only responding a little. I've noticed I'm really really tired and want to sleep during the day and I've noticed blurred vision. Is this common?

Answer/Reply:

I think that I would get a 2nd opinion. The Lantus site says that you should only be taking it
once a day at the same time each day. Other sites talk about using short acting before meals
along with the once a day Lantus. Please do some research. Lantus keeps a slow steady
release. The short acting works on the food you are eating at the moment and brings those
sugars down. You must correct any eating issues, no drinking and excercise if you can. Take some classes that will help. Some areas have free diabetic classes! Take care.

I am a 46 year old male and i was thaking 30 units ofI INSULIN GLARGINE and 45 md ACTOS at the beginning of the summer . Then i started a daily walking routine i have lost 45 lb now i am off the ACTOS and down to 20 units and i am still waking up with blood sugars in the 50's

Answer/Reply:

you probably need to start lowering your dose of Lantus. I regulate mine myself with my diabetic educator, she told me to lower my dosage of Lantus by 3 if my glucose is low and raise it by 3 units if my glucose is high in the AM. she told me to adjust it by 3 units because any less wouldnot make a significant enough difference. I should note that I have type 1 diabetes that is an auto-immune disease not type 2 which is a metobolic disease. I am a fifty year old female.

hi I'm type 1 diabetic, have been on insulin for about25 years now, I've been taking 43 units of lantus in the am, and take novolog before each meal on a sliding scale. in the last couple of years I have noticed that I'm leaving a yellow substance on my sheets at night , I have extremely dry skin in my ears and lately I have started getting phantom pains in my joints or the tendons attaching them, more and more frequently.could this be related to my insulin, type or regiment.help Don

Question/Comment:

Ok I am a Type one diabetic and have been using Lantus for about 7-8 months. I just use 22 units before bed and then dose with humalog for meals. I have great A1C numbers and just use alittle extra Humalog if I eat something higher in carbs or sugar. Everything I have read here makes me wonder why I don't need more Lantus? And I only use it once a day and I see many here using it twice. I am not a tiny little young person. I am probably 25 pounds overweight and 50 years old. Anyone know if other medications slow the ability of the Lantus?

52 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

The severity of diabetes varies from person to person. Your body may still make some insulin, or more insulin than the next person. Also, your response to the insulin may be better than someone whose diabetes is more advanced. If diabetes is left uncontrolled, insulin resistance can develop. If you have kept your A1C and daily blood sugar numbers well-controlled, your body has a better opportunity to respond to your medication. Lantus was originally designed to be dosed once daily. It releases steadily over a 24-hour period. As resistance develops, more insulin is required and is broken into more injections each day. Diet is an important way to help control diabetes. Many medications may interact with insulin. Some cause insulin to be secreted in smaller amounts or decrease tissue sensitivity to insulin; others will increase the effectiveness of insulin. It is best to make sure your physician, your pharmacy and your iGuard profile are up-to-date with your complete medication profile to make sure any interactions are caught.

Answer/Reply:

Lantus is a long acting insulin and one dose last for 24 hours. I don't see why some are taking two shots or why they take it in the morning. It's always prescribed at night time and only one shot of it. The other shots should be of the fast actings insulins, like Novolog, etc.

Answer/Reply:

I am a juvenile diabetic of 26 years and I take humalog sliding scale and lantus 21 units a day. I was taking lantus once at night but then changed it to the morning time and this worked a little better for me. I then read that lantus doesn't stay in your system for 24 hours so, I changed my lantus schedule to 11 units at 9:30am and 10 units at 9:30pm. This allows me to have lantus in my system at all times. I still struggle a little with an occasional high blood sugar but all in all it works much better than one shot of lantus a day.

I have been taking Insulin Glargine, Insulin Aspart for about 2 years now. I am being treated for depression, high blood pressure and bipolar disorder, with other perscriptions.** I have been having serious foot problems all of a sudden, with bad curculation and pai recently.**I don't know if anyone else has this problem. It also might be caused by all my medications mixed or because I also have a bulged disc which is damaging my back, side and leg. If someone else has these foot probblem without haveing other problems, please replay or email me at khaney46@yahoo.com. I am really conserned about all my health issues, and will be working to get them corrected soon. Thank You Ken

49 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

If a diabetic begins to have foot problems they should see their doctor as soon as possible. It is likely the foot problems are a side effect of your diabetes and should be taken care of by a doctor. Best Wishes, Diana

46 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Insulin glargine and insulin aspart do not have reports of causing foot pain or circulation. Diabetes, if left uncontrolled, can cause neuropathies and decreased circulation. Neuropathies can cause numbness, pain and weakness. Bulging discs can also cause this type of pain. Of course, it could be something else entirely. Please make an appointment with your physician to discuss your symptoms.

Question/Comment:

I am a 60 year old female. I was diagnosed with type 2 in 1992. I have progressed to a point where I am taking 78 units of Lantus in the evening, 2 1000 mg metformin one in the am and one in the pm and I take 7 units of Humalog before each meal. I try very hard to stay on my diet and monitor carbs. Summertime is a good time for me as I am much more active. The winter time comes and my activity level drops to not much at all. I work and sit a lot for work. I have my ups and my lows but do fairly well. I also have celiac so I do not eat white bread or other wheat products.

61 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

First let me say I've be on Lantus for many years with fairly good results. Recently my doctor told me to reduce my nightly injection to 60 and inject the balance in the morning. This he said comes directly from the maker of Lantus. Something about Lantus not working well in dosages over 60. Thus he is changing the dosages of his Lantus patients. I voiced concern over this as I was doing ok, not great but ok. I've been a long time getting to where I am kind of thing! Well to make a long story short my ok control went out the window fast. Several weeks later I'm totally out of control getting readings above 350 doing the same things I was before. I'm back on my old dosage of Latus (80units) and I am geting the control back. I do take 5units of Novolog before meals. And many times I don't need it (Novolog) and thus getting a low sugar alert. Usually very mild low sugars but I'm sensitive to my body so I read the signs it gives me well and act on them. This helps greatly!

I am a 58 y/o female also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes - I take the same meds you take, but I take 30 units of Humalog before each meal. I to am mostly active in the summertime and winter is the blahs too. I also had a heart attack and stroke and have to take plavix, pletal, and a full asprin, then I am taking lovastatin and lysinapril and toprol XL for my blood pressure, which I think is too much meds for blood pressure. I also take methadone 20 mil twice a day as I had a full spinal fusion at age 13 and 3 discs in my neck fused with bone chips from my hips. Just recently , March 08 I had 3 discs removed and replaced with kadaver bone and 2 titanium plates with 6 screws each to literally hold my neck on my shoulders. I too lost my insurance when I filed for disability which I was approved on the first try (WITHOUT AN ATTORNEY) but the downfall to that is I am not approved for Medicare until I have been on disability for (2) years. So I have been without insurance and have to pay all of my meds on my disability check which isnt much compared to what I have paid in since I was 15 years old. I do get my my Lantus, Humalog, and Plavix from the providers through the PPRX program and am VERY BLESSED and thank them everyday but all of my other meds cost approx $300+ a month along with my Pain Mgmt Doctor, which I have to pay 100% with no insurance and I have to go to the Health Clinic to get my other meds. I am greatful to them but have no control or do not find out the results for 3 months AFTER the blood work is done and have to pay 80% of that with there so called sliding scale fee. LOL LOL that is a BIG JOKE. I hope some of this will help you at least a little bit. It scares me when I read about people who take Methadone, and statins and I always am asking my dr. and she just says it is all hogwash. So when I die I told my children to sue the doctors over these medicines.

Question/Comment:

I read an article recently from an email , that said lantus is not real insulin and that there may be carcinogin initiating side affects of Lantus which are supposedly not seen as an after affect from actual insulin use. Is there any truth to this claim as it would be wise to know. Thanks for any info.......................

63 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Lantus is a regular insulin that has been chemically-modified in a couple positions to make it longer-acting and without peaks. A report from the FDA published on July 1st states that there is a possible link between Lantus and cancer. However, the risk of cancer associated with Lantus is not well defined and more studies are being conducted to determine if there is truly a link between Lantus and cancer. The FDA is recommending that you continue with your current insulin therapy, especially if you have found it helpful in the management of your diabetes. If you are concerned about the possible risks, please make an appointment with your physician. As with any medication, you and your physician need to discuss the benefits of taking the medication versus the possible risks. There are long-term and immediate consequences to out-of-control blood sugar as well.

Answer/Reply:

This is the first day I've signed on to this site. It seem like it will be very beneficial given the number of medication I am on. Have you heard an update on the link between the Lantus and cancer "scare"? This is the first I have heard of it. Thank you.

47 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

The FDA is currently reviewing many sources of safety data for Lantus to better understand the risk, if any, for cancer associated with use of Lantus. Discussions are also ongoing between the FDA and the manufacturer of Lantus as to whether any additional studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of this drug will need to be performed.

You can read the more about the FDA safety alert here: http://iguard.org/alert.html?aid=609

The FDA will communicate the results for its ongoing review to the public as new information is available. As soon as this information is published, iGuard will post and email this information to members taking Lantus.

I was diagnosed with diabetes about 20 years ago, my pancreas has pretty much shut itself down in that time. I'm also an educated person as a pharmacy technician, as well as going to school currently for medical assisting, with hopes of getting my Radiograpy degree. I was put on 30 units of Lantus at night, and novolog before meals, though I've not been without setbacks, I have when from glucose levels of 567 to my lowest to date of 125. Do you know that they have changed the scale by which people qualify what a "normal" glucose level is? It's now from 79 to 129. But as diabetic's we learn what is right for one may or may not be right for another! If any one needs help or more information I'll do my best to use the knowledge I've been given thus far to help, but I AM NOT A DOCTOR! I can't practice medicine, or diagnose anything. This is from one diabetic with some medical knowledge trying to help other diabetics. Best of Luck in your endeavors!

Hello! I was diagnosed about 2 1/2 years ago. My blood-sugars have been all over the map. When oral meds weren't enough, I was put on insulin. I am still on Metformin 1000mg/day, and the insulin started as p5u/am and 100u/pm. I also am on a sliding scale of Humalog(which has been modified 6 times). Corrently, my Lantus is at 110u/am and 110u/pm. I am having a hard time. There are times where my blood-sugar has been 500+, and as low as 120-without any symptoms. Currently I have been having lows below 100, with symptoms, and below 60 with strong symptoms, at times having to call 911. I also have many other medical broblems that I know can affect any diabetics testing. I follow a strict diet, limitted exercise, and still dealing with the loss of my husband. I take 11 different meds/day(some 1 a day, some 2, and some 3) I also have a morphine pump implant. If anyone has any suggestions on how to beat the situation, please let me know. I am veryupset and depressed. 54yearsold female

Answer/Reply:

I lost my husband last year. Talk to a minister or chaplin at your local hospital. Or get with a group. Diabetes is hard to manage when you are alone (who likes to cook for themselves!) Make sure you have someone to talk to who will ask how you are. What I found to be important for me was understanding the sick day plan. AND that even if you are to sick to eat your blood sugar doesn't go down. I have a good doctor who listens to me and that helps a lot.
Remember that diabetes is a learning experiance. There is always something new to learn. At first they had me on lantus in the morning but my sugar often crashed the next morning. Now I am on a night and it seems to be a lot better.

54 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

You need to find someone to talk to about your loss. I lost my husband last year and it is tough. It also makes my diabetes harder to deal with. I don't like cooking just for me so for awhile meals were an issue. I also had no one to ask me how I was doing or tell me that they thought I needed a doctor. So I have had to monitor my colds and illnesses myself which was tough for awhile. A diabetes support group would be great if you live in a place that has one ( I don't) A good doctor helps as well. Mine listens for which I am grateful.

Answer/Reply:

You sound like you need a new diabetologist or endocrinologist. Your swings are not good at all. Ask you doctor about the pump. You sound like a good candidate, but I am not an MD. My background includes a Ph.D in Biochemistry with a thesis concerning insulin pathways. But it is a long time ago when I got the degree. Current knowledge is way ahead. You need a specialist or a Diabetes clinic associated with a good teaching hospital.

Question/Comment:

I have been on Lantus for 3 months. Started at 20 units, Am up to 34 units at bedtime and Metformin .(1000 mg times 2) When I pay attention to what I eat and how much, this plan works well.
I did, however, have a very bad month in March. I had a very bad cold and the numbers went crazy. Right after the cold, I got a bad case of Flu. Most of the month I battled high blood sugar. Sometimes well over 300. On those days I went up to 40 + units of Lantus and still couldn't control it. Once I was well again, everything slid into place but I have to be careful not to overeat or too eat too many carbs at one sitting.
I am happy when i wake up and it's under 125. The goal is too eat the way I know I should. The weight loss I hope for is not happening but at least I'm not gaining. I've been heavy for the better part of the last 20 yrs. Well over 200 #.
Before I started Lantus, my Fasting numbers were always over 200, sometimes hitting 350 during the day. Now I try to keep everything under 200, as much as I can. Pasta, white bread and white potatoes are my enemies, tho' I love them alot.

65 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

When you had the flu, if you were taking over the counter cold medicine it is important to know that they contain alot of sugar. There are sugar free meds you should look for when you have a cold.

Question/Comment:

I take 60 units of lantus before breakfast and at bedtime, and I take metformin ER at breakfast and at supper. my sugars have gone down from 200-300 at night to 140to157 at bedtime. and my sugars in the morning run from 93to107 every morning. Best readings I have ever had. I used to have to use at least 9to12 units of R novolin at each meal , not anymore. Novolinreally made me swell up with water weight. Best i have felt in years.

54 year old Female

Question/Comment:

My experience: Lantus is not necessarily a 24 hour insulin. I take 15 units every 20 hours and it works very well (supplemented with humalog before meals). The effectiveness (duration) of Lantus ranges from about 16 hours to about 28 hours. This VARIES FROM PERSON TO PERSON. Fortunately, once an individual finds his/her dose, the duration typically does not vary for that individual. PLEASE FIND YOUR OWN DURATION. It will save you from going crazy. Dont expect much help from the doctors on this.
Point #2: I have had some of my worst crashes (BS = 35) less than one hour after injecting Lantus. If injected incorrectly, Lantus becomes a super-fast insulin and will take you down while you're not looking. YOU MUST INJECT INTO YOUR SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE, not muscle or mainline it into vessels. Nobody ever taught me to inject at an angle and my short needles were occasionally going clear through the sub-q into muscle. Muscle tissue has a different PH factor which causes the Lantus molecules to seprarate rapidly and become a super fast insulin. Once I learned how to inject properly, I have had no problems with Lantus.

Question/Comment:

I take Lantus and I have put on some weight with it. My Dr. said a lot of patients do. It is a growth hormone. But all insulin is, but Lantus is one that causes it most. It so far helps better than most, but that is not saying much. I take extreme care of myself and still have sugars running 240-400. I have become insulin resistant though. I am going on a pump. Oh did I mention I take 180 units of Lantus? This is not to mention the Byetta, Novolog and glyburide I take.

38 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

You must be a BIG gal eating alot of food. How much Novolog are you taking. Your blood sugars (240-400) need to come down to the 100-200 reading very quickly for your health to be good. Taking more Novolog after meals will help bring down the sugars. Are you Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic? Sounds like Type 2 with you taking Byetta & Glybunde. I'm not familiar with these drugs. A good Diabetic Doctor could help you if he truly does it for a living. Not all doctors/nurses are educated or specialists in this field. Good Luck. I look forward to your reply back.

Answer/Reply:

What is your HgbA1C? I can't imagine taking all this. I'd start back at square one. I've taken 4 oral meds(one at a time) and none worked. Now I'm on Lantus and fixing to go on the pump. That may be your alternative instead of all these meds.

70 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am a BIG gal..300 pounds and 60 years old. I shoot 76 units of Lantus every night, take Metformin, and Novolog at mealtimes. I have found it isnt so much how much I eat, although some reason must be exercised, but what you are eating. With experimentation I have found that for me almost all wheat carbs are no good, and beans seem to be like some kind of magic food for controlling blood sugar. So I just dont eat breads if I can help it, no white potatoes or rice. and very small portions on the brown rice or sweet potatoes. I found that one of the popular send=through=UPS diets is not a lot more than I was spending anyway and allowed me to eat plenty but due to the right combination of carbs was like amiracle for sugar control. While using it I was able to actuallly cut back on Lantus from 76 to 63, and my morning sugars went from average 230 to between 110 and 130. the between meals sugars were much more stable as well, with a nice steady 2-3 pound a week weight loss. Fat is insulin resistant and the more you can get rid of the better. I love food too much to every be thin though. I really feel for you cuz diabetes is a tragic disease and although very common these days still a terminal disease and if you are not already there, the effects of neuropathy are hellish. Learn more about low glycemic index carbs and incorporate them into your routine and see what happens there are tons on books and foods available.

Hi I'm taking 70 u Lantus at night and I now take 100 mg of Januvia. Within less than a week I had this diabetes in a pretty darn controllable state. It has worked awesome for me. I have no exteme hunger now that the dosage is regulated for me. I actually started out with 45u of lantus and 1 Januvia, but I have a hard time not staying on a diet so I find now that 70 units with the Januvia pill once a day is awesome. I have been trying everything and every combination thinkable this is the first time that I've felt in control instead of the disease. Please asked to go on a holiday from Medications and ask to be changed to these two diabetic medicines it may take a couple of weeks for you, but it is so worth the try. My sugars in the am are between 86 and 106 and at pm. 148-205 before bed depending on how bad I've been. If you're better at diet you probably won't need as much as I take. Sincerely Debby Ramsey

Would you be interested in learning about Kangen Water? Kangen is a ionized, oxygenated, emulsifying water and it is magic. What is the average units taken of Lantus? I take 500mg glucophage am, 500 mg glucophage P M , then 14 units of Lantus at bedtime. My readings are still in the 200's. I've only been on Lantus for 6 weeks now. Does this sound like it's normal ?

60 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I WOULD ASK YOUR DR. TO INCREASE YOUR LANTUS BY AT LEAST DOUBLE. THE FACT YOU TAKE IT AT NITE IS A GOOD SIGN. I TAKE 100 UNITS AT BED TIME A NITE. MY INTERNIST IS A DIABETIC ON INSULIN HIMSELF AND 1 THING HE SAYS IS THAT MOST DRS ARE UNWILLING TO PRESCRIBE MEGA UNITS OF LANTUS. YOU NEED MEGA UNITS IN ORDER FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY.

51 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

your reading are still in the 200's because your glucophage isnt working. glucophage can also take 8 to 12 weeks to be at the needed levals to work. in august of last year i was taking that drug while taking lantus 5 units a day and increasing by 5 every 3 days until my number got below 130. the most units i was taking was 70. i ran out of glucophage for about a week still taking my lantus and my numbers were below 130. the other thing about glucophage they dont tell you is if you have von wildabrands disease you should not ever be on that class of med. for those of you who dont know what von wildabrands disease is, it is the lesser known form of factor 8 disease also known as christmas disease. yes factor 8 disease is male disease females get the von wildabrands. my father has the factor 8 disease gean and my mother had the disease. i wound up getting a double whammy. i have both the gean and the disease. you need to be careful what you take and how you take it. not every doctor out there is knowlageable about ever disease out there.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

The number of units of Lantus needed is different for every patient. In a clinical study with patients with type 2 diabetes who were already treated with oral anti-diabetes drugs but had never received insulin, Lantus was started at an average dose of 10 units once daily, and then adjusted according to the patient’s need – by the end of the study, some patients took as few as 2 units daily and some patients received as much as 100 units daily.

Your blood glucose reading may vary depending on when you are measuring it - whether you are taking the measurement before or after meals. A reading in the 200’s is above the desired range, so it is a good idea to let your doctor know about this and see if he or she wants to adjust your current medications. It is important to continue to monitor and keep a track of your blood glucose and share these numbers with your doctor.

Answer/Reply:

I began on Lantus at 30 units about 6 months ago. I, too, take Metformin twice a day. However, the doctor took me off of the Glucophage due to possible liver damage from the other drug (Glyburide) in it besides the Metformin. I am now at 70-75 units once a day on the Lantus and my blood glucose has been under control for quite sometime. It took about 6 weeks to get to the right dose. So, be patient, but also consult your doctor on increasing the units more than the suggested 1 unit per day. I began to increase at 5 units a day until my readings were within the acceptable limits. I am very pleased with the Lantus and the once-a-day doseage and still take the Metformin twice a day as well.

I have been taking 100 units of lantus in the morning....and 1000 mg of metphormine 2 times a day......with the lantus there is sometimes no need for me to take the metphormine.......when i get up in the morning and take a BS reading and it is below 150 i dont take the pill just the insulin.....maybe you need to have your doc in crease the amount of lantus you are taking.....and the reason i take mine in the AM is because i was bottoming out durring the night

Question/Comment:

I had difficulty with seepage of insulin from injection spot when using 3/16" needles. I switched to 1/2" needles and was able to drop daily units by 15. It did take a couple of months for me to settle on the right dosage. I have to follow good diabetic practices - altering my late night snack to applesauce let me drop my dosage another 15 units. Overall, I am pleased with Lantis.

Question/Comment:

I just started using Lantus, this is my first experience with insulin injections. So all this is new to me, but I've noticed just in the short time I've been using Lantis or just the fact it's insulin my nubers have been much better than before doing the injections. I'm also on alot of other meications, so I'm not sure how all of them are going to react to me using insulin now. Any tips or suggestions of things to watch out for besides the weight gain ?

Question/Comment:

Is there anyone else here dealing with steroid induced diabetes? Would like to know how you are doing/did with Lantus.
Endo docs not following properly. Taking Humalog w/meals & any snacks over 10 carbs but levels were still ranging @170-240 so they added Lantus at night. Readings kept creeping up, got so bad that 1 time meter read "HI" and second try 451! Like I said - not following properly.

Answer/Reply:

hey I'm a type 1 diabetic not steroid induced but would like to try to help you out. First of all if you are not taking enough Lantus at night then it will not work as effectively. Also I don't know how good the humalog is working for you but you might want to ask your doc. about apidra insulin. Apidra is a super fast acting insulin that I feel works a lot better than humalog. As far as the lantus it isn't uncommon to have to take 50 or more units before bed. And as far as the high numbers are concerned as long as they are not consistently high then don't worry to much. (Worrying raises your bloodsugar too)! If your doc doesn't know what is right for you then you may have to find out for yourself and just let your doc know what you are doing. Everything affects your bloodsugar in one way or the other so if you are getting those high numbers once in a while try taking a little bit of insulin or exercise and drink lots of water. Hope that was some help to you.

My issue is that the Lantus is expensive, I have type 2 and I take the novolog three time a day and 15 units of lantus at nite before bed , some morning my sugar level is great and some mornings it's not, some morning it's range from 114 to 134. 57 year young female, posted Oct. 2, 2008

Answer/Reply:

I heartily aggree as to the cost of Lantus.. My endocrinologist has me on 90 units twice a day, with humalog on a sliding scalle for BS>200. Since I'm in the "donut hole" with my medicare.. It's costing $500.+/Month. just for the Lantus. That doesn't include the other meds that I'm on for Blood Pressure, kidney problems and cholesterol. Believe me.. gettin old ain't for sissys.

Has anyone had any problems with weight gain? I don't know if it is the Lantus, or the Novalog

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I've taken Lantus for a few months now and am up to 74 units a night and have gained almost 20 pounds now. I was the same weight for years until now, so I think it's the Lantus.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

my son is 15 and has lost alot of weight using lantus and humilog since he was diagnosed 2 years ago ..

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I am having a severe problem with weight gain and edema to the point where I stopped taking it last night. I have gained 20 pounds in 6 weeks. I know this is water weight because of the swelling if my whole body especially legs and feet. I have contacted the doctor because I was having much better control with Byetta and oral drugs. Potasium is also high now. I need to wait until tomorrow to taked to the doctor but I have e-mailed him concerning this. I am also taking meds for heart and blood pressure that according to precautions should not be used with Lantus.

Are you also using Actos orally? That will produce substantial weight gain which can outweigh its usefulness.

I have had a significant weight gain. I also do not know if it is the novolog or lantus.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have gained so much weight since starting Lantus, then when my endocrinologist added Novalog , it had started to level off then weight gain continued. Now I am also on Glucophage ER 500mg twice a day, but I seem to be stable with my weight now, but I find it impossible to lose any of the weight I have gained. All I can say is my BS are in normal range most of the time and if they are high....I also know why!!!

Answer/Reply:

My Dr said that weight gain on insulin can be common because its a growth hormone. I am on both lantus and Novalog and have gained weight but I am not sure if its because my sugars are normaling out or the meds and I am not going to the restroom ever 1.5 seconds LOL.

Question/Comment:

I have Type 1 Diabetes since two years ago and had to go immediately on to insulin. During the day I take Novorapid (breakfast, lunch and dinner), Insulatard (only at lunch time)and Lantus before I go to bed. I see on the chart you sent me that my risk is high (orange). Why is this?

66 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Insulin glargine (Lantus) is rated orange because it requires close monitoring of your blood glucose level and regular check-ups with your doctor to follow your progress with controlling your diabetes.
