Question/Comment:

I take Lyrica 200mg for fibromyalgia and also take Tramadol hcl 50mg 8 a day and sometimes I get a migraine that none of these can take care of. I take 1 BC Powder to take care of the headaches. Does anyone have information on any dangers of combining these meds.

40 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

There are no interaction between BC powder and Lyrica or Tramadol according to the iGuard drug interaction system. However, using Lyrica and Tramadol together may increase the risk of excessive sedation, which may also be increased because you are taking a higher than normal dose of Tramadol. As a result, you should regularly review the treatment and dose of Lyrica and Tramadol, particularly if you are ederly or a weakened patient.

Question/Comment:

I don't know about the effect on heart problems, but it sure does cause bleeding. I take about 6 insulin shots a day and have ruinedd several pieces of clothing from blood stains.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

hello, my mother also take insulin shot and she does not bleed. sounds like you need a second opinion on your health and a new perscription. i recommend seeing a new doctor and find out what is causing your bleeding.

Answer/Reply:

since it appears u r a diabetic and the insulin is a must, a COATED 81MG APIRIN [2] IMMEDIATELYAFTER AMEAL WOULD HELP TOP PREVENT THE BLEEDIONG IF THAT IS THE RESULT OF THE FULL UNCOATED ASPIRIN AL MALE

Answer/Reply:

Blot the blood stain with hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball. This will remove the stain and usually not harm the material. We usue this all the time in the hospital on the scrubs we wear.

I am a diabetic and have no problem with bleeding from my injection site. I also take aspirin daily but only 1 baby aspirin (81mg). Maybe you are taking too much aspirin.

Answer/Reply:

I take ecotrin but I read the side affects. They are the things I am being treated for. Am I suffering affects or do I really have these ailments?. I don't know why, but my doctor put me back on bayer low dose for preventative heart care. When she first took over the practice, she couldn't stand bayer and insisted that I take ecotrin. She has since told me I was anemic and wanted to know if I know where I was bleeding? It's not external. You'd thought she'd have me checked for internal bleeding. Nope. My menstrual cycles flow like a faucet. I have never had that problem. I'm 53 and it should be nearing an end. I am scheduled for a colonoscopy consultation at the end of the month. Hopefully, during the exam, they'll find no bleeding or anything to be concerned about.

Answer/Reply:

I used to take multiple insulin shots a day without good control.
Six shots a day seems like to much, I switched to lantus and now I only take one shot a day usually shortly after I get up.
Speak to your health provider about lantus and maybe yoy can cut down on your shots.

Question/Comment:

I am confused it seems no matter what medicine I take none of them mix with Aspirin. Yet we are told as we get older to take Aspirin my doctor has advised me to take a daily dose of 75mg to help with my heart problems.
I as a person do not like taking tablets, to this end I am worried that not taking the medication i will get worse. As it is by taking the medication I am experiencing bad head aches, sore aching bones across my shoulders. When I tell the doctor all he does is give me extra tablets.
Does anybody have or take a one pill cure for high blood pressure and angina?

i am a 73 yr old woman and take nitroquick for angina. it disoves under the tongue and it takes away my pain immediately!

Answer/Reply:

My advice to you is to look into another doctor for not only a second opinion but a possible change in doctors. Simply giving you extra tablets isnt going to change your symptoms and the doctor is doing you a great disservice healthwise. Its time to seek better advice. If you are a military veteran, check your local VA Hospital and if not, look for a doctor who will place your health up front.

Do you have a family member or close friend who can go with you to your doctor. Sounds like the Doctor you go to is not too caring and your just another number to him. I would insist on having my doctor explain every medication he is giving you and why. Tell him you have bad reactions to the current medications and he can switch to some others. It sometimes takes a few switches in medication until it works for you.

Answer/Reply:

I was having problems taking aspirin - it gives me severe problems with my stomach - but they told me that I needed to take it for fibro-myalga - I take the COATED aspirin and it works fine and does not upset my stomach in any way - shape or form - I did find out that it interacted with my Niaspan and caused a FLUSH - that is where your body looks and feels that it is at about 500 degrees internally and you look like a red lobster well-cooked . The doctor informed me that I needed to take the asprin 1 hour BEFORE the Niaspan at Bed Time. And It worked great till I had a chocolate bar or a cup of hot chocolate within 2 hours of taking the Niaspan and then I got a FLUSH from the chocolate interaction - Be sure to Get the COATED aspirin- Good Luck !

Question/Comment:

After a heart episode in 1981, I started taking 325mg aspirin.
I took 325mg aspirin every day for more than 15 years, even tho recommended dosage was 81mg. ( St. Joseph baby aspirin at that time).
Through the years I have had to take (Plavix, Imdur, Coreg) and other heart and vascular medications. Years ago with these medications 325mg aspirin became conflictory.
325mg now was too much, 81mg not enough.
What I did with a pill splitter is halve a 325mg aspirin tablet making two doses of 162.5mg each.
This is a workable compromise for me. Twice an in-effective for me "baby aspirin" yet still only half of my many years dosages of 325mg.
My doctors and cardiologists are aware of what I have done and my other medications and have not commented negatively nor dis-approved.
I have been taking 162.5mg aspirin doses each morning for the past several years.
Works for me.

Question/Comment:

so... i noticed that asprin can make acid reflux worse and make asthma attacks worse. since i have to take asprina as a blood thinner, but have acid reflux and asthma, im thinkin this is kind of a bummer...

27 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

i am a pharmacy student,so as a advice i would definitely talk to my doctor to switch to some other blood thinner like plavix. as far as acid reflux is concerned, it should be fine as long as you are taking enteric coated aspirin which does not hurt your stomach but as far as asthma is concern, may be in long run might give problems. so just a advice, talk to your doctor during your next visit. Hope this helps.

Answer/Reply:

I have severe reflux, too. Just be sure you never take it on an empty stomach and drink enough to get it down so its not hanging out in your esophagus causing irritation.

30 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am an almost 66 year old female and I have reflux disease also. I take .81 low dose aspirin every morning, but WITH my breakfast, not before or after. Even though it is coated, if I take it first it will cause burning in my stomach. If I take it after I eat I get burning in my esophagus. I know it is hard to remember to take the aspirin midway through a meal, but the benefits outweigh the inconvenience.

67 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have heard that eating a banana every day can help stop acid reflux. I don't have personal experience, but it is cheap and healthy and probably worth a try.

80 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I took between one and three aspirin daily for fifteen years. Increased and reduced dose depending on headaches. I aim to be totally free of headaches which is almost always the case. I had some acid reflux in the evening (pepperoni pizza is a definite no-no). Pepto Bismol took care of the occasional problem. About a year ago developed pain in stomach and lower intestine. Took doctors (neprhologist and gastroenterologist) 9 months to diagnose ulcer. Prescribed Aciphex which took care of the problem. I have switched to taking three 81 mg enteric aspirin in the morning and three in the evening. I want to emphasize that I think the combination of hydroxyurea and aspirin is important. Hydroxyurea alone does not work. I do not know anything about asthma.

Question/Comment:

Over the last 2 years or so my dad, 62 year old caucasian, has been bruising very easily.
The simplest of bumps give him purple colored bruise marks that last for a long time. He has also, over the last two years, seen swelling down near his ankle (i think his left). He does spend much of the work day on his feet, but has not experienced swelling in all the years previously.
He takes Simvastatin-20mg 1xper dail-cholestrol, Metoprolol-50mg 2x per day-blood pressure,
Baby Aspirin – 81 mg 1xper day, Vitamin E – 1per day, & Tamsulosin-1perday-.4mg. Any thoughts on possible drug interactions/side effects that may be causing the bruising and swelling. Thanks, concerned son.

63 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

hello concerned son,
is he taking anything for sugar? that could be one of the reasons for bruising, check with his doctor and see what else is wrong he might have something else that causes those kinds of problems. but in my opinion it might be sugar, my mother swells like that and buises easily also and she dibetic.

Answer/Reply:

Since vitamin E has blood-thinning properties, it is possible that the E and the aspirin are making your dad more susceptible to bruising. As for the swelling, 62 years old and on his feet all day at work? That'll do it! If you're concerned that something else is going on there, you may want to address the issue with his doctor. Could be some of his meds need adjusting.

53 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I spent 2-1/2 years and multiple doctors - tests - cat scans and everything under the sun - only to find out by accident from a different doctor that the simvastitin was causing most all of the problems I was having - swelling in feet - painful feet - felt like my heel bone was trying to come through the bottom of my feet - I tried gel insoles - high dollar shoes and everything - nothing worked - I'm on my feet all day too on concrete floors - IT is very painful - I was also having shooting pains and all going through my underarms and into the breast area - a doctor finally told me that it was the simvastitin - they put me on Niaspan and no problems - take an 81 mg COATED ASPIRIN - 1 hour before the niaspan at bedtime and all is good now - no chocolate within 2 hours of the Niaspan - it causes a Niaspan FLUSH - feel and look like a very bright red lobster - well cooked at 500 degrees it was scary - Bruising can also be medications and / or diabetis - be careful and have them check for all - Good Luck

Question/Comment:

In my previous meds safety check instead of Caduet I was using Norvasc and Lipitor separately.
With Caduet your results state a low risk for the aspirin (low dose). However, with Norvasc and Lipitor your results were quite different yet Caduet is a combination of Norvasc and Lipitor.
Can iGuard clarify this contradiction?
Thanks

Question/Comment:

an enteric coated drug is designed to pass through the stomach unaltered and to disintegrate in the small intestines. So, enteric coated aspirin (81mg) does not worsen stomach problems and has a proven record of thinning the blood. I got this information from the site www.takerx.com

Question/Comment:

I have heard that taking 162mg of aspirin is more effective in preventing cardiac issues that 81mg. Anyone have any further comments on this.

50 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Asprin can be hard on your stomach. Keep to the low dose, especially at your age.

65 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

It is true that the 81mg aspirin regimen is useless to most women and doubling that amount helps more. It is also true that aspirin is unkind to the digestive tract. What you could do instead is take a garlic supplement. It does the same thing in a kinder way and is nutritionally good for your body. I also use a clove of garlic in all of my soups and casseroles.

Question/Comment:

Is it really necessary to take the 81mg. of aspirin, when you are also taking Coumadin and having the blood checked monthly? Why two blood thinners, and also Atacand, Inderal, Cardizem,? I also take Synthroid and Nexium.

86 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My mom is also on Coumadin and Asprin, she's got pretty bad atrial fibrillation, so I guess that's why, but we don't really trust her doctor now and are planning to ask the new doctor when we go in next week!

Question/Comment:

I'm being told by your web site that my aspirin might worsen my reflux esophagitis. However, I use an enteric coated 81 mg. ASA product. Does the low dose and enteric coating reduce my risk?

60 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

Only slightly does it help. ASK your Doctor about it.

65 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Yes, the enteric coating helps to prevent gastric irritation - so using the enteric coated product helps to reduce potential side effects. Also, in most situations, including aspirin, using a lowest effective dose of medicine may reduce the risk of side effects. However, you should always talk to your doctor before adjusting doses or stopping a medication.

Question/Comment:

My Cardiologist recomended taking 81 mg aspirin since my open heart surg. 5 bi-pass. So far there has been no problems. The Doctor is seen once a year, this has been going on for 8 yrs.
The bottom third of my heart was completely non functioning, after 2 or 3 yrs. it came back to normal and is funtioning notmal. I have two great Phys. to thank, #1 Above and his partner here on earth. This all happend when I was a young 66 yrs. old and now about to turn 75 in 2009.

76 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I had an angioplasty in 1995 at age 65 and another with a stent in '03. I'll be 77 in '09, so our cases are similar. I take 81 mg Aspirin, plus the Vitamins and supplements recommended by a cardiologist. Magnesium is important, along with Co-enzyme Q-10, Hawthorn berry extract, Taurine, L-Carnitine, Chromium, Ginko Biloba and Vitamins A, B-complex, C, Omega Oils and Pantethene.

If your cholesterol is too high, ask your doctor if you can take Niacin instead of statins. Doctors used to prescribe Niacin for that purpose, but now they like the synthetic drugs better. I took 400 mg Niacin daily and my total cholesterol went down from 205 to 146, so I lowered the dose to 200 mg daily (plus the 50 mg in my B-50), and my cholesterol was still about 160 over the past few years.

Since last year I have stopped taking any extra Niacin (it's also known as Vitamin B3), besides the 50 mg in the B-50, and my total cholesterol was still 165 at my last blood test. But I also take three tablespoons of raw oatmeal in a fruit smoothie first thing in the morning. The oatmeal is supposed to absorb some of the cholesterol from your gut, and I also put in a heaping tablespoon of Metamucil (a psyllium fiber), which is also supposed to reduce cholesterol, expecially tryglicerides.

The only thing I could tell for sure after taking the vitamins and supplements since '98 was that I didn't have a cold or the flu until '05. Seven years with no sniffles, and I don't take a flu shot, either. I've had a cold already this year, only lasted five days, so I figure my immune system is tuned up now for another seven years!

Ask your doctor about Niacin. He'll laugh like mine did, but you can tell him that you know of a cardiologist who recommends it. He was best known as the first doctor to recommend a high-protein, low-carb diet. His name was Robert C. Atkins, and besides his diet book he had a whole staff researching vitamins and supplements, shortly before his untimely death. (He slipped on some ice and suffered a fatal concussion). His "other" book is called "Dr. Atkin's Vita-Nutrient Solution - Nature's Answer to Drugs" That last part is a strong statement, coming from an M.D., especially a heart specialist.

You can find his book at the library or your local vitamin store. The vitamins and supplements are not expensive. Only the Co-Q-10 costs more, about $12 - $15 per month. The others are mostly less than $5 per month.

Asa is the only medication I have found to help my arthritis. I also take ASA [325] for my heart condition eveey night at bedtime. I feel it helped to save my life at one point 2 years ago. I did end up having to have an angioplasty.I think ASA is a mirical drug as it has been refered to.

70 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My son was 25 when he had an almost fatal reaction to ASA. He has polyps and severe asthma. Surgery removed the polyps but a few years later, they are back. His asthma is under control but he stays far away from ASA. Ambulance medics, emergency personnel and ICU staff all told me that God had saved his life; there was no other possible explanation. His larynx began to swell up and he choked. He was 10 min. in respiratory arrest which is a total impossibility humanly speaking. The fact that he survived was incredible, but to have no sequels well... I'm still very moved, when I see him with us today at age 38, married to a beautiful woman, raising this cute and funny little 1 y.o. who looks just like Mom and clowns around just like Dad. Thank You Dear Heavenly Father for such a gift! I just have to give credit where credit is due!
