Question/Comment:

Because I've been taking too much Tylenol for pain, my primary care dr recently prescribed Celebrex, which worked miraculously well for my pain. I was virtually pain free for 5 wonderful days! When my cardiologist learned of this new addition to my medication list, he was very upset and told me to stop immediately because of the potential heart risk. I've spent three very painful weeks and many calls later waiting for the two drs to prescribe something. Any alternative medication that would work as well?

Question/Comment:

I have had 3 joint replacements over the last 10 yrs, proof of the extent of my Osteoarthritis damage, but have taken Celebrex intermittantly for the last 5 yrs, without any side effects. I take a minimum 200 mg dose,(maintenance), when I have a period of
aches & pains, but, don't take any if I'm pain free. The same procedure as taking aspirin or Advil, etc There is definite concern about taking ANY high performance drug for 'everyday' continued maintenance unless the ailment warrants doing so.
I have had excellent results w/Celebrex. I also found that the patent is expiring in the near future, so a generic will be forthcoming.

Question/Comment:

I began taking Celebrex several months ago and have notice an increased appetite and weight gain of 5 pounds. Could this be the result this medication?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Whereas some patients have reported small weight gain with this product, it appears that many patients experience weight gain that may be related to their underlying problem (e.g. arthritis / pain, less exercise). If you continue to notice an increase in appetite, it may be worth talking to your doctor.

Question/Comment:

I was taking Celebrex for about 2 months after knee surgery to reduce inflammation. I stoppped taking it about 3 weeks ago only because I forgot to renew the prescription. Last week I developed a central retinal vein occlusion and my blood pressure is high. Could Celebrex have triggered this even though I haven't taken for three weeks? My blood pressure and cholesterol (HDL, LDL and Tri-glyc) have been normal

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Although celecoxib and other anti-inflammatory products are being studied in more detail regarding their cardiovascular risk, there is little evidence to suggest problems like this can occur after only a month or two of use.

Question/Comment:

i have been taking celebrex for 3 weeks and it seems to have helped me.

Question/Comment:

I was just prescribed Celebrex for my back pain which has been getting increasingly worse. I just read on your site, that MAY be due to taking Levoxyl which I've been on since 4/04. I am not only concerned about the warnings on the celebrex, but NOW wondering if my worsened arthritis symptoms could be CAUSED by a medication I have no CHOICE in taking!! It's a catch 22 situation if so. I had asked the prescribing doctor to give me something that would eliminate the worry I had from taking ALEVE 220mg daily and it seems CELEBREX is worse!! Any ideas?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Were you having problems with the Aleve? If you did not, and did not have risk factors for gastric bleeding, it may be worth talking to your doctor of the benefit versus risk of returning to the product that worked better.

Question/Comment:

Please let me know if this drug is available in the USA. I understand that this drug is the generic form for Celebrex. Why can I not purchase the generic form in the USA?

72 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Celecoxib is the chemical name for Celebrex. Generic forms of celecoxib are not available in the USA (or most other countries) since this chemical is still protected by a number of active patents.
