Global Patient Feedback for Singulair (Montelukast) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I am not so fortunate with singulair because of the side effects that took me several days to figure out. I had taken the singulair for about two weeks and I noticed that with two hours I became irritable and restless. After that I would start to tremble and shake. About four hours after taking singulair I felt like my blood sugar dropped to the bottom and I could barely sit up because of feeling weak. I also notice that suddenly I developed insomnia which is not my usual pattern. I asked my physician to replace singulair with my old medication (which he did). I also filed an adverse reaction report with the FDA. I did not have suicidal thoughts but while I was experiencing so much anxiety I cut off all my hair. Now it will take weeks for it to grow back!!!! My suggestion would be for anyone taking this medication to be very alert to any changes in mood, attitude or behavior, etc. and report the symptoms to your physician immediately.

Question/Comment:
I take Singulair with a multivitamin and several herbal suppliments. For me, I find it best not to take Singulair with the multivitamin or any minerals (like Selenium) or with antibiotics. I take those separately at least 2 hours or after I took the Singulair. That has worked well for me.

Question/Comment:
My brother's blood pressure spiked after taking Singulair, and it dropped back to normal after ceasing the drug.
My BP was also much higher than normal with no known cause, so I decided to try cutting Singulair, which I had been taking for years. At the next routine exam, the nurse measured my BP twice to verify the result -- a huge drop to very healthy numbers. The physician agreed that cutting Singulair was the only reason my BP would drop, because all other factors remained constant (weight, exercise, other meds).
I now take 1/3 the prescribed dose and look forward to my next office visit.

I believe that my BP spikes with the use of zyrtec and singulair. I keep telling her they are related and she says there is no evidence from the manufacturers or in her PDR. It's nice to see someone else thinks so too!

I am sorry to see that your brother had such a negative reaction to Singulair since I consider it a wonder drug for myself. Each Spring and Fall I had severe upper respiratory problems requiring aggressive treatment involving Prednisone and Guaifenisen, both of which made me feel quite poorly.
As I type this I have the windows open, enjoying the fresh air and the beautiful sounds of Spring again. Hopefully others will not assume that your brother's reaction is typical. At the same time mine may not be typical either, but from my own experience I would definitely suggest an allergy sufferers to give Singulair a chance. As I said, I find it to be my panacea against allergies.

My spouse and I take Singulair for our Asthma we both have normal blood pressures. I used to have a very low blood pressure. My husband runs several miles a week though and I do gardening and household chores so we both stay active. I have been on Singulair for 14 years. I only take it when I am having problems with allergies or breathing, nowadays (not everyday as previously). Currently due to the season (time of year) I am taking it almost everyday. I cannot sleep and feel my breathing is more shallow if I do not take. Makes my insomnia worse if I miss a dose (during high allergens).

When her doctor triesd to cut back on her asthma meds including the singulair and flonase then she got worst. I just had her at the doctors today and she has phnemonia, I believe itf the doctor would of let her meds alone then she would of ben fine. Why break something that is not broken?

I have been taking Singular for over a year along with and inhaler and nasal sprays because of my asthma and have had no problems with my blood pressure. One thing we all have to know is that people have very different reactions to our medications. What works for one person, may not work for the next.

Answer/Reply:
I'd talk to the pharmasist about drug interactions, but have been on singular for a few years and have never had problems. If you are taking it for asthma, it should be taken at night to work best. For allergies, it works best if taken in the morning. I noticed more problems when I was taken off it for a few months to see how I'd do, so it does work!
My 2 year old grandson is on it for asthma and was also told to have it before bed.He is also on pulmacort twice a day for the asthma, given through breathing treatments.
As for breathing trouble when your child is ill, does he use a nebulizer to ease it? You should talk to a doc about that as well. That is the only thing that helps me when I'm having an attack, and the cough often sounds croupy, but it is a severe asthma attack with shortness of breath, etc. I'd consider getting rid of anything that can agravate the allergies as well, I know it's hard to get rid of a family pet, but your child's health should come first.
Good luck!

Dear Mom of Children with sever allergies & asthma. You should be able to the results of the allergy test if you do not owe the MD who preformed them any money. You might have to pay for copy cost but that would be cheaper and better for your children than repeating tests. Medical records belong to the MD & the Patient or parent of patient.
On another note If your children suffer badly & severely from their allergies don't fluctuate their meds thir bodies become accustome to the dosage and if ommitted they will react more severely, as apediatric nurse I know that it is far more beneficial to take the meds unless there are profound side effects the benefits are more than the possibility of side effects. I myself have witnessed the effects of on & off drug roller coaster ride the children have to endure.
Good luck

I got rid of all plants and the dog (a schnauzer) and put in hardwood floors. I also got an air filtering system. I drink only water and all natural organic juices and fruits/vegetables. No preservatives in my food. It seems to work.I also, stopped taking solumedrol, which for me made me swell up a lot more than on my own. I had bronchospasms with my antibiotic (Avelox/Levaquin),because I had severe antiphylactic reactions to it and had to be hospitalized. I had taken Levaquin before, now I take Augmentin when I get sick. I seem to be allergic to fillers in the drugs given me. I am a cardiac nurse, and the best thing for me, was eating a high amount of minced garlic in my food, and eating 2 tablespoons of honey in cinnamon tea. Somehow, it helped me diurese (get rid of fluids in my body) and help me to breathe better. I have a friend who is a homeopathic doctor. It has really helped me. It is better to eat fruits and vegetables in true form that completely changed into something else. I wouldn't expose your children for more allergy tests. If that pediatrician will not take transfer records from your old allergist, find one that will. Tell them you do not want to expose your children to more of the allergens and you refuse to risk them having a severe reaction from more exposure. You, are the voice of protection for your children. BE their advocate. Take less risks than necessary. God bless you. Make sure neither children drink anything more than water, orange juices, tomatoe juices and regular organically made juices. R.W.Knudsen juices are great ones to drink.I am simply telling you what works for me. I do pray over each thing I drink/eat . I say Father GOD, IN JESUS name, bless this portion of food for my consumption, that if it were a poison it would not harm me. Sanctify it for my consumption, In JESUS NAME, Amen. This is based on the scripture that read, we(believers) will stomp and thread on scorpions and serpents, in JESUS name. Remember the Apostle Paul was bitten by a snake, yet He did not get affected by it. The word of GOD does not ever return void. It is real, and it helped me heal from Respiratory Failure.Sincerely ,Gloria

Question/Comment:
I have been on Singulair ever since it came on the market (just about). Most of my allergies have been improved, maybe because of this medication and/or the fact that I am getting older and "maybe" outgrowing most of my allergies.
My constant sneezing during the spring and autumn stopped about 14 years ago BUT then all the allergy miseries went to my eyes!!! During the allergy seasons I can barely read the newspaper or watch a movie, especially at night when I am tired and my eyes are all red, sore and itchy.
I take artificial tears daily and prescription eye drops. Frankly, I'd rather take my sneezing back instead of all this eye trouble. I love to read and get very frustrated on the days I cannot. Does anyone have these type of problems???

Answer/Reply:
I was having similar problems with my eyes and I never attributed it to the singulair but now that you mention it, once I stopped taking the singulair the eye problems cleared up. I stopped taking it about 4 months ago because it was not helping me any longer. I used it for my asthma and it helped immensely in the beginning but after a couple of years it wasn't doing anything and my eyes were so bad I could no longer wear my contacts. Maybe there is something your dr can do other than stop the medicine to help you. Good luck.

Answer/Reply:
My son was 2 years old and diagnosed as asthmatic. I have taken this on occasion for allergies; but, he was prescribed this last year to help control allergies and get his asthma under control. We have had great results with this and now have been through the entire winter without a single episode of bronchitis or pneumonia. He is nearly 5 now and I will continue to give it to him as long as it's working and helping keep his allergies and asthma controlled. If asthma is the issue, I found it works best for my son if given before bedtime - he sleeps through the night without having any coughing or asthma issues. If allergies are the issue, try keeping his room free of dust producers (stuffed animals are the worst!) and seal his mattress & pillows in cases that are meant to minimize the dust mite and dust factor. Can be found at Target or any other major store with zippers & are easy to use. Good luck!

my daughter has been on singulair for several years and takes it at night with the generic form of zyrtec.she rarely ever gets sick now. she will use her inhaler and nose spray am and pm..no more attacks. by the way, a teacher told us about using the airborn for the immune system, and since she has been on that, she has not had a stomac virus and very few colds. it keeps kids from getting so sick in school. she takes 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the evening. I use it myself during cold and flu season. neither of us have had problems. My allergies used to be so bad, I would get terrible respiratory infections, everytime I caught a cold and bronchial asthma that would last for months. I no longer have the problem.

PLEASE watch yur child closely. My grandson was put on singulair and had severe problems from it. He was 4 years old at the time. It started with low weight gain, body aches, and headaches. The doctor was consulted and he said it was growing pains and allergies. We then escalated to seeing colors and stomach aches. The final stage for us was when he told his mother he was having bad thoughts and wanted to hurt someone. My daughter then went on the internet, only to find out this is happening in alot of young children and the doctors are not even aware of it. It was horrifying what w went through with doctors and hospitals. So please watch for any signs. I think the web site my daughter went to was medications.com. We seen inprovement in him in 2 weeks after stopping medication. He is now a normal 5 year old and gaining weight.

A very small number of our iGuard members, less than 1%, reported drowsiness and dry mouth while on Singular. Although side effect response can be variable between patients, almost all patients felt that the good things about Singulair outweighed that bad things.

Answer/Reply:
From personal experience of taking Singulair for over 6-months I figured out, believe it or not, that it is not an inhibitor, it is a supresser which helps suppress some of the mucus but also completely suppresses the endorphines which help you feel energized, motivated, and happy, to be balanced chemicaly. If you are still taking this medication pay attention to any changes in emotions, behavior, lack of desire to do anything, anxiety, restlessness, irritability and more.
