Question/Comment:

I am a 32 year old female and have been on 60 mg of amphetamine salts for about a year now. I can not sleep !!!!!!!! I dont want to stop or lower the dosage, but I need to sleep well again. I do not have insurance and on a tight budget any suggestions? I have a yearly check up in June or July. I can only sleep more than 4 hours if I stop for a week or 2 and that causes my post med symtoms to return. HELP!!!!

Answer/Reply:

I would give Melatonin a try. It is a natural sleep aid and has no side effects. MY 10 yr old son takes it to help him sleep due to taking Adderall for ADHD he is often too wound up to sleep. It's relatively inexpensive too. 60 tablets ran me aroung $4.00. It is a 3mg tablet and the best thing is you fall asleep fast, stay asleep and don't feel groggy in the morning.
Hope this helps you. Take Care

Answer/Reply:

I also have trouble sleeping due to medication. I have found that melatonin can cause me to get depresses and Your body naturally produces melatonin so you may have a sleep disorder. I started taking Valarion Root. It is also a natural sleep aid. It doesn't make me feel drugged in the morning and I get a good nights sleep. Hope this helps and good luck.

Answer/Reply:

My older boys are on Adderall also and getting to sleep was a problem, not being able to settle down at night. Our doctor said to try melatonin. It works well for them. I am a nurse in a nursing home and I've seen residents try scented oils on their pillow. (lavender) Just a thought. I think you could get the oils in the craft area at a Walmart type of store. Best of luck.

Answer/Reply:

What time of day do you take your medicine? Never take it late in the day. Always take it first thing in the morning. And don't sleep in if you were up late. That is the most important thing. Sometimes I have to eat right before I go to bed. I know that's not good for you either especially if you are apt to gain wait easily, but it does help a little. I have found that it also helps me if everything is very quiet, no noise,tv etc. Because i am in such a light sleep the least little thing wakes me. Also try reading before you turn off the light. If none of this helps you will have to lower the dose a little because the side affects of this med and no sleep are not just not healthy but potentially dangerious. Hope this helps, I have been on the same for many years. Best of luck

Answer/Reply:

I am a 34 year old female who is also on Adderall XR for ADHD. I use to have problems with sleeping. These are a few things that I have found that have worked for me. I do not sleep with TV or radio on because any type of external stimulus will keep me awake. I take a shower about one hour before I go to bed, the last thing I do is put on the most boring program I can find on TV, which is the best sleep aid that I have ever encountered. I hope this helps some.

Question/Comment:

I am currently being treated for depression with Wellbutrin XL generic (Buproprion). I have read that a combination of it and Adderall can be beneficial in easing symptons of depression, anxiety, and restlessness. Has anyone heard of this or used for any of these purposes?

28 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am also prescribed both Bupropion and a generic form of Adderall, and I have found that the combination does alleviate my mood. I am also prescribed Cymbalta, which I believe to be the first pill that actually worked without the often uncomfortable side-effects. Cymbalta is the most beneficial medication for me in easing depressive symptoms that I have experienced with other medications. I can only say that finding my miracle combination took me years to figure out. To answer your question: yes and yes. I would only suggest talking to a doctor about how it might affect your personal sleep habits, as the combo will likely give you slight insomnia.

25 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I would check out the drug interactions between Bupropion and Adderall. Goto drugs.com and hit interactions. this will give a good idea about how dangerous they are while taken together.. I am currently taking Adderall and bupropion , but am slowly weaning myself off it over period of about a month from 300mg/day to 150/day then hopefully (if Dr. will prescribe it) 75/mg for a couple weeks and then im gonna stop. While doing this i also started taking multi vitamin, super b-complex, and alot of EFA's to help my brain cope with any withdrawal symptoms. hope this helps.

I had that same issue with Adderall XR 20mg/1daily and Lamictal 100mg/1daily.I only had that experience for the first week in starting. It kind of felt like my gag reflex was going a little haywire but,it seemed to have subsided after a week or so.Two months into taking it,I have renamed Adderall XR as"The wonderful miracle".I'm a 3 year survivor of a Traumatic Brain Injury(frontal and temporal lobe)and I now have the ability to focus my concentration on typing you this reply:-)and I now have the ability to expand my mental horizon and capacity.I'm concentrating a little too much as well but, forwarding that obsession onto something that makes you happier, could be the greatest of stress relief:-)My problem now is that medicare is pushing me to take amphetamine salts(whatever that is)and I'm afraid that it won't have the same effect.Maybe someone who stumbles upon reading this can fill me in on that!Good luck and Good health to you,37yo female;-)

Answer/Reply:

amphetamine salts is the generic form of Adderall. I use it and to me it works just as well as the Brand Name but a lot less money. I have been using it for about 6 years now for ADD but have resently been Dx with Asperger Syndrome. There is no known Rx for this. Just for the underling symtoms that goes along with it.

I am a 28 year old femaleand on 20 mg of adderall once in the am once at noon and a 1/2 at 4:00. I also take 200 mg of Topamax, 30 mg of Celexa and 1 mg of konopin. The Adderall is for my ADHD and the rest is to treat my Bi-polar disorder. I was treated for YEARS for depression and then anxiety and then depression and then anxiety...back and forth I went. I finally found a doctor who listened to me and put the pieces together. She never puts me on anything I'm uncomfortable with. I'm a teacher for children with severe disabilities and emotional disturbances as well (ha ha go figure!) So I have seen SOOO many reactions to different combos of meds. I would say if you are becoming obsessive compulsive with the Adderall (which I have seen NUMEROUS TIMES!) you simply need to lower the doseage a little. At one time I was on the "amphetamine salts" and it was just a generic version and non time released. It worked great, and I actually preferred it because I could break them in half if I wanted to. I hope this helps!

Answer/Reply:

Hi. I'm a mom and my son has been taking "...amphetamine salts(whatever that is)..." for years. This is the generic form of Adderall. He did much better on the Adderall XR but the cost was outrageous (no Rx coverage) - he did better due to the extended release (XR). Now on the good news, my pharmasist said the XR has just come out in generic form but hasn't hit his store as of yet. You can call around to various pharmists to see who has it in.

My son has ADHD and during the school year he takes Adderall XR so he can focus on his school works. The Adderall does very well for him. During the summer however I keep him off the Adderall and put him on OMEGA-3 Fish Oil Capsules. He takes 1000 mg 2 times aday and that helps him focus. It's not quite as good as the Adderall but during the summer he pretty muchs plays the day away anyway. You might also try changing your diet. Cut down on processed sugar, cornsyrup and even certain food coloring has an impact on ADHD. You might try diet soda but keep the caffeine.
Hopes this helps you.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Hi Rob,

My inference is that you are an adult since you are taking 30 mg of Aderall. I do not know if this will help you, but my daughter is 10 and has been on Aderall since she was 7. When she started hormone fluctuations (my diagnosis as a mom) due to puberty, her level of medication fluctuated. Right now it is stable again, but my suspicians tell me that when she becomes a young woman I will have to have her medicine reevaluated,

Usually, we associate hormone fluctuations with women, but it might be wise to ask a doctor about different hormone levels and their fluctuations for the male, as we all have hormones.

Also, what you have eaten may have an impact as food acts as a pillow (softens the effect) for the pill laying on top of it; it makes for slower absorption of medication. My daughter is on the extended release (XR) and it last her about a school day. I deal with the rest of the day or give her 5mg of non-extended release, which works immediately, but not for an extended period of time...like a school day.

Good luck to you,
From a mom with questions and inferences

Answer/Reply:

I was diagnosed at age 52 with adult ADHD inattentive type. It has been a tremendous difference in my life. It helps with focus, motivation, mood, alertness. Before treatment, I had to work twice as hard as my peers to achieve the same accuracy and performance on the job. Now, I receive consistently good performance reviews and am not noticeably slower than my peers. In fact, I worked a second job all through 2008 and was a top performer for both companies. Decressed appetite for me is a tremendous pro because I am significantly overweight. I have lost 40 lbs. and keep the weight off because I consistently snack less and don't miss it. Cons: I am noticing some obsessiveness with my thought patterns, so you should modify what you think about to something positive or find an activity that helps. Sometimes I have palpitations, but I believe it is because my blood sugar levels fall too far with the other drugs I take in addition to eating too little with too much time between meals. You should give serious consideration to trying this medication. My life is better over all since beginning the meds. I take 20 mg Adderall XR once daily first thing in the morning.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Hi Rob,

I'm not sure if I can really help you, because I have only used the XR. I have been taking it for over a year and have not really had any issues with it. I increased it at one point, but tried and still do to take half of my dose sometimes so I don't get too used to it and need to increase too soon. It might work out for you to take the XR, but I'd talk to your doctor... I know someone who takes the regular and she seems to have to constantly increase her dosage, which isn't a good thing with any medication. I know the XR stays in your system and breaks down slow so it releases through your blood stream throughout the day. I take 40mgs of the XR a day, and sometimes take half. My advice is to try not to take more than you need, it worked fine for me at the low dose I started on for quite awhile. Good luck!

Answer/Reply:

I'm taking Adderall XR 20mg once a day. I find that it works a lot better if I take it in the morning with a little something to eat or I start to get a little dizzy. The medicine helps more if I keep active. If I'm sitting down trying to do things it helps me to stay focused, but I need it more for staying on task when I need to get things done around the house. I find that with the medicine I have a lot more energy, and feel a lot better about myself because I'm finally able to get thing accomplished. The only thing that can sometimes happen is that I know when it's starting to wear off in the evening. I don't seem to have the drive to get as much done then. If I know that I really need to get things done later in the evening, I try to take the pill in the late morning. They recommend that you don't take it after noon, probably because it may have a tendancy to keep you up later at night. I've never tried the fast acting kind or a higher dosage, but I thought I'd let you know my experience with the XR that I'm taking. Good luck. Lisa

My son takes 35 mg of Adderall XR every morning and we are very happy with this dosing. He is 11 years old and has had various treatments over the years, both dietary and medicinal. He has had the most success with Adderall XR. He takes it at 7:30 every morning and it enables him to make it through the entire school day (5pm). He does have a visible dip in energy in the early evenings but that usually only last 30 minutes or so. He does not take medication during summer break, as we prepare for school in the fall, he does have trouble sleeping through the night the first week or so when he begins taking his meds again. Hope this helps you as you contemplate changing your medication.

We have two teenage children that are on adderall xr. One is on 20mg and one is on 30mg. We tried changing to a generic brand of instant release twice a day but it did not seem to work as well, so we switched them back to the xr. When they were on the generic they only took one pill at breakfast and one at lunch, not two at a time like you so i don't know if the xr will do as well for you, but it may be worth a try.

My doctor started me out on 10 mg/day xr and I feel like it needs to be increased cause I'm still majorly tired all the time but it has helped alot with my attention deficiet. I feel it would help alot more with a slightly higher dose.

Mainly writing to let you know that there is now a generic XR available. My pharmacist just let me know and it saves me alot with my insurance getting the generic.

Rob,

My son grew up taking Adderall twice a day like you're on, and we got to the point too where it seemed like it wasn't working as well as it used to, but that happened with Ritalin too. We never tried Adderall XR, but got on the Vyvanse 50 mg. extended release capsules, and they have worked pretty well for over two years. It's an Adderall derivitive, but name brand and expensive. Seems like you have to keep changing meds every once in a while, has been my experience, unfortunately, and seems to be something that has to be constantly monitored. Talk to your doc, of course, and I wish you the best of luck.

my daughter was taking adderall then went to the XR and it is better because it last longer, and you need to remember that if you drink juice while taking it or 30 min. before or after the effect are not that good. My daughters' doctor said to switch medicine every so often because, your body gets used to it. and now she is on Vyanse and so am I and it works very well. Also remember to not eat or drink lots of cokes or things with sugar, cause that will make you hyper. I hope this information was help full. and remember to ask your doctor about this or the nurse.

My son has been taking Adderall XR 20mg for a number of years and is a blessing. He failed the 8th grade (due to a number of issues), so I had to adjust as to the time of day. He is ADHD and needs help focusing. During 8th grade through 10th grade, most of his core subjects were in the afternoon so the school nurse was giving the meds to him when he got to school. However, he is currently in 11th grade and his core subject are in the morning so I have him take the meds before he leaves the house. For the past 3 years, his GPA has not been lower than 3.5. I hope this helps you out.

Rob,
I started with 20xr, I felt buzzed most of the day then, i would crash hard around 3pm, just in time for my kids to get home from school, start homework, dinner ect. then i switched to 10mg.
i was very disappointed in how quickly my tolerance built up,so now i'm on20mg. However, i do like the control of taking it when i feel i need it most. my dr. won't give me the extended with the fast acting so i'm sticking with the fast acting to help me when i need it the most. This med has changed my life for the better. i feel that i'm finally functioning "normal" unfortunately for the ones that i live with, their opionion would be that i'm much bitchier then i used to be. i'm just happy that things are finally getting done. that has taken a lot of stress off of me. before it was horrible, i would find myself pacing for hours up and down the hallway. i really felt like i was going crazy. unfortunatly, idk how long it will last. i'm very concerned about tolerance build up, then what. good luck.

we have 16 year old and he use take regular Adderall morning and afternoons now XR he only takes in the mornings and they work great thru out the whole day. He use to come in so fired up if we missed his afternoon session he would get completely out of hand. We believe XR much better. I wish the price would go down and generic never has worked for our son.

I've done both and I must say that I hated the XR! it wore off far too quickly and then you were just stuck! Now I take my immediate release 20 mg in the am, at noon and a half at 4:00 and it works out GREAT for me. I have never felt better! My doc recently mentioned to me that they had received numerous complaints about the XR wearing off too quickly and most people opt to go back to the immediate release.

My 10 y/o son takes Adderall XR 25mg for ADHD. He's been on Adderall since kindegarden. We've tried all the meds known to man and Adderall is the ONLY thing that works for him. He takes the Adderal with Omega 3-6-9 FishOil. The eXtended Release (XR) slowly dissolves so it lasts all day vs the regular Adderal which seems to last 4 hours at most.
The generic Adderall just hit pharmacies and I'm suprised to learn that my UHC pharmacy copay for the brand name is $30 but the generic costs $50!! I thought the pharmacist was pulling my chain so I call the insurance co and true enough - they're penalizing me for wanting a "new" generic drug. My other insurance, Cigna, doesnt cover the drug at all. Private pay pricing is over $220/mos for 30 day suppy. Has anyone else had this problem with a generic being more than the brand name?

Question/Comment:

I give Adderall xr a VERY high rating. I have been on the medication for about 3 months now, 25mg, and all I can say is WOW!! It almost feels like a whole new world has opened up to me. I really feel that my lifelong anxiety/depression problems have been related to me not being diagnosed and treated for ADD. When I was a child I had the "jumping out your seat" type symptoms. As an adult I had the feeling overwhelmed with EVERYTHING problems. As an adult there was no hyperactivity, just attention problems. I have also TOTALLY cut out caffeine when starting this drug. My doc told me caffeine competes with Adderall for receptors in your brain. I have done what he has said and the results are amazing. I don't feel anxious, on-edge, nervous, depressed, or anything. I am calmer, more social, able to study more efficiently, get better grades, and basically just enjoy life more. I highly recommend this drug. Cut out caffeine, take it as directed, and exercise a little. Hope this helps.

Question/Comment:

Both my twin daughters have been taking Adderall XR since the end of 3rd grade. They are in the 8th grade now. One twin is on 25 mg and the other is on 30 mg. It took a bit of different dosing to get the right dosage for each. One of the twins has heart problems so that has been a concern, but they are both HIGH END ADD and ADHD, and the benefits have far outweighed the side effects and possible risks. I was extremely AGAINST medicating my children for their ADD/ADHD for a long time. They were targeted by daycare, then kindergarten and the school, and their doctors as having high end ADD/ADHD since they were very young so I tried many different ways which mostly included behavior modification by me and their teachers, IEP's at their schools with modified homework, etc., and went to working part-time around school hours so I took them to school and picked them up from school at which time I would have to turn in their assigments for them and walk them to their classes in the mornings, and often find them wandering around the school after school... at the end of 3rd grade, one of their teachers whom I would see daily (for all 4 years they had been at the school as she had been on twin's kindergarten teacher, the other's first grade teacher, and one of their 3rd grade teachers.. so we knew eachother and my girls very well)- she told me that with them going into the 4th grade, most likely one of two scenario's would happen- 1)- they will pass without learning anything as their attention span was about 2 minutes long at best or 2)- they will not pass the 4th grade as the teacher/student ratio went from 20/1 up to 32/1 and I really needed to consider other possibilities such as meds or special schools... So.. I finally gave in and tried meds- WOW- what a difference.. I was never a believer in ADHD meds and felt that too many parents didn't try other things enough first and yadda, yadda, yadda.. but after actually being the parent of two children with very severe ADD/ADHD, I am now a true believer that the meds can be a miracle for children that truly need them... now, 5 years later, one of the girls no longer is in IEP and no longer has "special" classes, the other one has multiple health problems including heart problems, a rare blood disorder that caused her to need chemotherapy and other harsh drugs at a young age, she has other learning disabilities so she still needs the "extra" help for all areas.. but I would just like to tell parents who are dealing with this to trust in your doctor's, go with your instincts, and work with your children's teachers.. because medications, behavior modifications, or whatever are not going to just "cure" your child- if your child has ADD/ADHD, all these things in conjunction, along with the help of teachers and family/friends- they all will contribute to the success of your child.. Thanks for hearing my story!

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I just wanted to reply to the woman who posted above. I thoroughly relate to everything she said regarding medicating children with ADHD/ADD. I have two children who have been diagnosed including a son who is 9 and a daughter who is 12 and is affected more severely with ADHD symptoms. I also was reluctant to medicate my children and afraid the jump on the bandwagon. I tried behavior modification, diet modification and biofeedback therapy. Finally, we tried medication and she is now a successful, confident 7th grader (taking Adderall XR 30 mg). Although the meds are not a cure all, she still struggles with organization and long term projects, she is pretty much a typical tween. I too recommend that parents not be closed minded about medication for their children's ADHD.

Question/Comment:

I just want to warn people if you have issues with your body being slow to metabolize drugs that you may not want to use the extended release adderal. I have gastroparisis (my stomach does not empty normally) and have always had issues with the way my body metabolizes medications. It was very apparent that this was an issue to me when I took the Adderal ER, which always resulted in horrible heart palpatations, etc. So, I am just sticking with the regular release which works fine for me.

I only take Adderal when I feel the need to focus, as it has a cummulative affect on your body, specifically your blood pressure. I always let my doctor know that I don't take it as prescribed twice a day, because as with every medication, a medical professional should know when you stop taking your medications or if you are taking them differently than prescribed. Most days I just take 1 30mg pills in the morning and skip the afternoon dose. And whenever I am on vacation I try not to take it at all to give my body a rest (again, I always let my doc know). The only terrible "withdrawl" symptom I have when I stop taking it for more than a few days is extreme sleepyness - which I can deal with on vacation.

I do have to say that if I did NOT take it I would never get anything done. It was very hard for me to defer to a medication after treating my ADD with behavior modification for over 13 years. I found when I adopted my son that I was no longer able to manage my ADD that way due to too much uncontrolable stimulation. But, I have to say that it has really helped me out, so I am glad I tried it out and that it has been helping me over the past 7 years.

My grandson is on this drug. He is 11 years old and was diagnosed with A.D.D however he is suffering with horrible anxiety attacks. He literally feels like he's is dying. He feels like his throat is closing and he can't breath. Will the medication help him with this or will it make it more pronounced? I feel so helpless with him this way, he calls me and cries and I can't do anything but assure him that he is going to be okay and that he needs to tell himself that there is nothing wrong. Any suggestions??

HI MY NAME IS JENNIFER (bad spelling and gramer)

I AM 26 YEARS OLD, I WAS TEN WHEN I WENT ON ADD/ADHD MEDS. ADDERALL IS A VERY POWERFUL DRUG! TEN YEARS ON IT.

IS HE EXPOSED TO THE FOLLOWING?:
CIGARETTE SMOKE INDOORS, SOMEONE DRIVING IN CAR SOMKEING
(if he walks by it out side that Is fine)
CAFFEINE (SODA)
CHOCOLATE!!!! HOT COCO ETC..............
ALL OF THESE PRODUCTS ARE SELF MEDICATING AND DOUBLE THE EFFECTS ON THE DRUG ADDERALL THAT HE IS TAKING.

IF HE IS NOT EXPOSED TO ANY OF THE ABOVE, HIS DOSE IS TO HIGH NEEDS TO EASE INTO THE MED OR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UNDER THE SIDE EFFECTS/ CAUTIONS OF THE DRUG SEE YOUR DOC IMMEDIATELY IF YOU EXPERIENCE SWELLING OF THROAT, TROUBLE SWALLOWING, MOOD CHANGES THERE ARE MANY MORE SIDE EFFECTS GO TO A PHARMACY THEY WILL PRINT OUT EVERYTHING FOR YOU.

PS: LISTEN TO YOUR GRANDSON HE KNOWS HIS BODY THAN ANY DOCTOR. PEOPLE WITH ADD/ADHD ARE VERY AWARE OF THEIR OWN BODY. I BET HE IS VERY BRIGHT JUST A LITTLE DISTRACTED

I KNOW HOW HE FEELS YOU ARE A WONDERFUL GRAND PARENT TAKE CHARGE! HE NEEDS A LITTLE MORE ATTENTION BUT WITH RESPECTS TO THE PARENTS BECAUSE THEY WORK HARD TO PROVIDE. HOPEFULLY IF THEY DONT YOU GO GIRL, POWER TO THE GRAND-MA

Answer/Reply:

Do you know what dosage your grandson is on? It could be that the dose is too high for him. My 8 year old son is on it and he was started at 5mg for the first month. Then went to 10mg for two months, now he is on 15mg. His dosage adjustments have been over monthly periods of time. Hope this helps.

I have been taking Adderal XR for almost 4 months. I am very pleased with the results. It has improved my quality of life. I am presently taking 25 mg. It has not been a magic pill to cure my ADHD craziness. It has calmed me down and relieved the great deal aniexty that I did not know I had. It is wonderfull to be free of that turmoil and the constant fear that was always with me. I am able to think more clearly, to concentrate and follow through with most things.
I never knew I was ADHD until my son was diagnosed 7 years ago. My only regret has been it took so long for me to seek treatment. I think my life would have turned differently had I sought treatment 20-30 years ago.

WATCH OUT FOR CANCER

Answer/Reply:

Your situation is very similar to mine. My son was diagnosed ADD/ADHD about 6 months ago. I didn't even consider that I had the same thing until I saw his symptoms, knew that when I was a child I had the same problems in school and with friends that he had, and started doing research on the condition. I have had anxiety issues as long as I can remember, I currently take Lexapro 20mg at night, and clonazepam 1mg as needed. About 3 months ago I started taking Adderall xr 25mg and all I can say is WOW!!. I really think that a lot of my anxiety and exacerbation's of it are attributed to my having ADHD. Another thing I have done is totally cut out caffeine, I mean totally. All the "background" noise in my head is gone, I can focus and think straight, my grades have shot through the roof. I used to be anti-add/adhd meds, wow!! has my feeling on this subject changed.

Me 2! Three months ago, my daughter was diagnosed with ADD. ADD is a bit different from ADHD and more difficult to spot as it is missing the telltale "H" or hyperactivity component which tends to draw attention to the ADHD sufferers.
Both issues run in families.
She met first with one clinician - and they brought me in later and explained the symptoms and his diagnosis. As I listened, these symptoms sounded more and more familiar... Unable to focus, unable to pay attention, attention quickly turned, unable to stay on task, extremely creative, etc, etc - the list is almost endless! We then went to another clinician - this one with prescribing privileges. This clinician concurred with the first on the diagnosis for my daughter. I met with a clinician on my own and we determined that I also have ADD. Without knowing exactly why, I have been compensating for it for 40 years. This clinician prescribed adderall XR 20 for me. My daughter is on 30 XR.
It is like the whole world just opened up for me! It is no longer difficult to concentrate or complete a task. And my memory has improved so that I don't walk from one room to another and forget what I had remembered..... And my home is finally getting to the point where it is organized!
And my daughter has gone from failing every class to high honors with subjects such as physics and calculus........ from not being able to walk INTO her room to having the cleanest room in the house! What a miracle for us both!

Question/Comment:

I was diagnosed with ADHD in 2nd grade. I have been taking Adderall for a little over 9 years, and I am only up to 20mg. When I do not take my Adderall, it is hell. I cannot sleep or eat for days. I see and hear things that are not there. I have anxiety attacks for no reason. I feel like Im dying and am completely depressed. Last summer, I didn't take my Adderall (so that was about 3 months) and even at the end of the summer, the withdrawal effects were intense and in no way had decreased. When I started school up again this year, I began taking the Adderall again and was fine for a few days, but then the "crashing" started setting in again. At about 4pm when the Adderall fully wears off I get extremely unmotivated, lonely, and depressed. But the worst part is the anxiety. I sometimes get anxiety attacks all of the sudden (for no apparent reason) and they last for atleast 2-3 hours. I feel like I'm dying, but I don't know what to do about it and it gets incredibly hard to breathe. If I don't take it I would most likely fail school and not graduate and I only have this year and next year and I wont have to take it anymore. But in the meantime I am still waiting to see my doctor to get on some anti-anxiety meds. Because at this point there are no " risks" I could see that would outweigh the definite benefits from taking a muscle relaxer or something of the such to calm me down at the end of the day.
And although Adderall does help some people(It helps me concentrate and motivates me) there are some people where Adderall completely leaves them wrecked. It can be very addictive especially if abused. Im not sure what the doctor actually said to my mother 9 ish years ago, regarding the benefits and risks associated with Adderall, but its not like I being 7 years old had much say in the matter.
In my opinion some doctors don't inform these parents of the long-term effects and withdrawal effects of amphetamines. Sometimes it seems they are handing out these strong psychoactive drugs like candy...and its a shame.

Answer/Reply:

One of my doctors once talked to me about Clonidine to take at night to help "calm" down during the day. We decided against it because he didn't think it worked as well in older adults as it does in children and young adults. At times, I also get the "anxiety" that hits suddenly, which may be from the Adderall wearing off. If I take alprazolam (aka, xanax; .25mg-.5mg) at that time or another adderall (within Rx), I usually feel better within around 15 minutes.

After so many years, the drug could have altered your brain chemistry so much that it would take longer than 3 months to get over the side-effects. Your feelings of depression may also be attributable to the long-term use. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any studies on the long-term effects of adderall use - some are probably in progress, but I doubt the drug has been available long enough to have an official long-term study.

I meant, "calm down at the end of the day" not "during" the day.

Answer/Reply:

The crash you are talking about is rebound. One of the things you need to do to lessen the effects of rebound is make sure you are eating during the day. What is happening is your body is running on empty. You haven't eaten much during the day (no body fuel) and and then the Adderal is wearing off. It is a double whammy to your system. Have you ever tried to drive your car on just gas fumes? That is what you are doing to your body.

You may also be suffering from aniexty problems. Comorbidity, is very common among ADHD sufferers. You need to talk to your doctor about these problems IMMEDIATELY.

You may need to talk to your doctor about switching to a longer acting formula like Adderal XR or getting a low dose afternoon booster.

Part of being a good patient is research and asking questions. I never just act like a lamb to the slaughter. I am constantly reading and keeping up to date with new information about ADHD and treatment. I go to the doctor with questions and keep him aware of everything going on in my life. Sometimes the littlest things are significant and grow into major problems, if not taken care of early on.

Don't give up on this medication....maybe you should be on XL or perhaps a second dose a few hours after the first. Talk to your doctor. I litterally slept 20 hours a day till this medication saved me...... I've taken it for years now....... and like you, without it I am depressed, crying and totally out of sorts. What I started doing, and ask your doctor, I take one when I get up, then I take another one about 4 hours later so it last later into the day and the whole dose does not wear off at once.

I can no longer afford the XL because I do no have insurance so I began getting the generic and it's not XL..... and while it's not as effective, I still take one when getting up and another 4 or so hours later..... and because it's not XL I am getting pretty fatiqued much sooner but my quality of life is still much better than before the drug.

Also, if you've been prescribed this drug..... you may have to come to terms that it's going to be for a life time if you are taking it for certain things. Once I came to terms with this, my doctor has been very good about monitoring it and putting me on something similar in it's place when the effectiveness runs low. After giving my body a break for a month or two by taking something else, I go back to it and it's all good again....

Don't give up on it or yourself.

I was diagnosed with ADD 1st grade. I was not medicated until I decided to go to College after being out of school for 10 years. I studied like I had never studied before. I was failing every test I took. I finially called my mother crying and she suggested seeing a doctor. I started out taking 10 mg twice a day. Once in the morning and once at lunch. This worked for a while. Later (9mos) my dosage had to be changed. It wasn't enough for the school and work day I had. The doctor changed my dose to 20mg in the morning, 10mg at 11 am, and then not to take the last dose any later than 3pm. This was perfect. I remained on this dosage until I was ready to have children. I had to stop taking all medication. I need to do fertility injections. 15 mos later I am pregnat with twins. 10 mos and I can get back on track. Boy I felt like there was no orginazation in my life. I could barely keep track of things on a calender. I have anxiety attacks for no reason. I felt like the world was standing still and I was spinning out of control. I was anxios, depressed and hurt all over. I was forced to change doctors at this time. My new doctor felt I would be fine with Effxor. I took 450mg a day(average dose per day is 75mg). It took the edge off but I was going nowhere. 9 mos later I changed doctors. I have been with her for 18 mos and couldn't be happer. I take AdderallXR 30mg in the morning with Xanex .25 mg, by 11 am I am felling the crashing, I then take Adderall reg 30mg with Xanex .25mg. This chang has made my day run so much smoother. I have had to be without for a month at a time. This is not a plesent thing for me or my family. The mood swings, anxeity, the withdraw and disorginazation. With the changes I have had to make with my life and medications I am glad that I am on Adderall XR 30mg/.25mg Xanex/Cymbalta 60mg in the morning, the Reg.Adderall 30mg/.25 Xanex mid day and at bed I take .25mg Xanex/Ambion 10mg at night to help me sleep. I have been on these medications for almost a year. My life, my family, and my home are back on track. I have minimal anxity that I can now work my way through with the breathing technique I have been taught. My twins are now 6 and life is as normal as it can get for us. I hope this will help some of you who have had to go through lifes up and downs and all arounds. Good Luck and God Bless.

i have been on adderall 4 many years and it is highly addictive trust me if you can stop taking it do before you get hooked on it .

Answer/Reply:

Then you're probably not ADHD (or whatever else you've been diagnosed with). This is simply the fact, and lots of people have been misdiagnosed as ADHD. Adderall can be addictive when you don't have that dopamine reuptake problem. If you feel it's addictive to you, then your dopamine levels are probably normal as it is, and you don't have ADHD. It's simple science. That YOU personally should stop it and look into your condition again is a wise decision. Telling other people, however, to stop taking Adderall is unwise given that you don't know their medical history and you're not a doctor.

Having said that, my personal experience with Adderall has only been positive. It really changed my life. My only complaint is that my ADHD often does not allow me to remember to take it! I've had to resort to many different techniques in order to remember to take Adderall. My vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, etc.) are stable, same as ever, I can sleep just fine, and I can pay attention.

Adderall. Too Much or Too Little?
When I first took Adderall, I was also taking Zoloft. At first, taking only 2.5mg. helped me to really focus, get stuff done, and actually feel happier and more outgoing. But, I had a bad reaction to the combination of zoloft and aderall, so I took my time and went off of the Zoloft because I fully believed the adderall was going to make a huge difference in my life. So, after completely getting off of the zoloft, I started taking 10mg of adderall (at 8am, 12pm) and 5mg at 4pm. Okay, this has been going on for probably two weeks. I am not getting at all the same effects I had before. I feel really really tired and kind of out of it, I get mad pretty easy and feel weepy. I also have a foot problem which makes getting anything done difficult. But, mostly I am just tired and not focusing like I thought I would. Is this a sign I'm not taking enough? OR Maybe, am I taking TOO much? Thanks for any insight.

43 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Although your dose of Adderall does not exceed the recommended maximum daily dose - it may not be the right dose for you. It is best to work with your doctor to adjust your dose, keeping in mind that it often difficult to find the dose and dosing schedule that helps with your symptoms but doesn't cause unwanted side effects. Be sure to tell your doctor all of your symptoms that you are concerned about so that he can make a thorough evaluation of what you are experiencing.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I was taking 90 mg/day. It allowed me to retake all of the science classes and put me I a position to enter into a allied health program. However, the program was horrible. It was highly unorganized, and understaffed. Their were no ethics demonstrated by the staff. Needless to say my dream of a lifetime turned into the most horrible nightmare. I basically lost everything. I have had life long musculoskeletal problems and gastrointestinal ( GERD, IBS) problems since the age of 5. I have problems with all of the medications that I'm prescribed as due to the scaring of taking NSAID's for 25 years and a back problem in which I lost 3 inches in height. Absorption varies from day to day. Ninety niligrams is no longer a viable dose. The MD (after I pull up the research on adult ADD as well as all of the pharmacy data which showed there was a lot of monthly variability (amount of medication vs days) during the 9 years to current. I now need 110 mg to have great days just like the years before "the nightmare." However, he finally admitted (which I already knew ) that all of the areas psychiatrist's came together and agreed to not prescribe over 90 milligrams. So, for the last 3 years I have three great weeks and one week of rebound. This comes out to around 120 days of my life that have been lost. I'm now on disability due to not only this but 8 serious musculoskeletal problems. Four of these will require joint replacements. The biggest disadvantage is I get weaker with each month as exercise programs must be consistent to regain the lost strenght and maintain as much muscle/function as possible. The biggest loss is to the American people as with my type of ADD, when dosed properly allows high levels of concentration and creativity. I have 2 designs (1 is a recording instrument to assist total knee patient's rehab process by empowering them, and filling the gaps left by cutbacks in medicare and advancing TKR technology to a new level. This will result in a global increase for all parties and a across the board decrease (based on clinical indicators used by medicare) in cost which could give Medicare one avenue to save millions and still provide a higher quality of patient care for less. Too bad you will never see it.

Question/Comment:

I just found out this information about the possibility of Serotonin Syndrome after a scary incident happened to me and the doctors, nurses, etc. thinking it was "all in my head." This really makes me angry.

I have been taking zoloft (an SSRI) for about 6 years now and recently had started taking adderall. I specifically asked if these two medications could be taken together and the doctor told me that yes, they could and that there was no drug interaction with the two.

I had gone up to 10 mg three times a day of adderall in addition to my 100 mg of zoloft. I started feeling very shaky and sick to my stomach with diarrhea, and sweaty and kind of heavy and dizzy. I thought maybe I was having low blood sugar really bad as diabetes runs in my family. The feeling was getting worse and worse and I was getting kind of worried that something was going to happen. Since eating sugar didn't seem to help, I thought maybe it was because I had missed two doses of zoloft, so I rushed to my pharmacy to pick it up. On the way there, I was sure I was going to pass out and thought maybe I should pull over, but was afraid no one would find me if I did, so I tried to keep it together to get to the pharmacy. I did make it and rushed in and told the pharmacist what I was feeling and that I thought I was going to pass out. I started feeling even worse and confusion started setting in and they ended up calling an ambulance.

Anyway, after running tests, etc. the hospital and ambulance technicians couldn't find anything and thought I was just having some sort of anxiety or panic attack and just asked questions about stress in my life, etc. I left feeling that maybe they were right when I finally started feeling better. I had a sneaking suspicion that my old prescription of adderall had something to do with it and quit taking it. And, now, just today, I found out this info about seratonin syndrome to which my symptoms were definitely in line with and NO ONE knew about this possibility. Even telling my psychologist. She didn't even say anything except that adderall and zoloft would NOT cause me to feel this way. Gol, does this ever make me angry.

Question/Comment:

I take 30mg of Adderall twice a day. However, I also suffer from sever panic attacks to which I take Xanax. I wonder if they are canceling each other out?

35 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

These two drugs work at different receptors in the brain and therefore produce different effects, Adderall is known for its stimulant effect and Xanax is known for its calming and sedating effects. They are sometimes used in combination to achieve a balance of specific symptoms or sometimes Xanax is added on with as needed basis to treat an individual panic attack. You should work with you doctor closely, letting him/her know how you are feeling, so he/she can adjust your doses appropriately.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

xanax does cancel out adderall, sort of. not completely. from personal experience on both i can feel them both working but teh best way to describe it is they are fighting for control of your brain. like xanax makes adderall not as speedy and hyper but i still notice them, just slightly less than without xanax. and the adderall makes the xanax not as sedating. but same, i still feel the sedation but its just different.

Answer/Reply:

I take 20 mg of adderal xr a day and trying to get of xanax which I have been on for 16 years - I am down to .25 of xanax but feel no self-esteem, lagging, just don't get out - but I have to get off the xanax as doctors now say it is dangerous and will eat up your brain cells and this makes me worry even more! What to do?? I am 60 - divorced 3 years which was very hard - I was married for 34 years - I feel alone and not worth living! I need help but do not have the money and moved to FL and am here alone. After losing my last job - I no longer care if I live or die. Anyone know how to get off xanax as I am afraid my dr. will take me off it and that scares me more - just more and more to think about!

I am 29 and have recently been dx with adult add. I take 20 mgs of Adderall in am and 10mg at about mid afternoon. This I began about 4 months ago and now I take it and it seems to not help as well. Does anyone have any options or is this normal for it to need to be increased over only 4 months of use? Let me know anything that may help with the dose increase, how much does it usually have to be increased and has anyone had to come off the med due to pregnany and how did you feel? iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

If you are serious about having another child you should have your doctor slowly take you off the adderall first then start you on a non narcotic ADHD/ADD medication like stratera. Not only will you have to stop taking adderall in the last stage of your pregnancy and suffer withdrawl symptoms there (which can be VERY bad) but your child will suffer from them as well. I quit taking adderall 2 years ago after being on it for 6 years and I have never felt worse. I was stopped colf turkey so it was different for me but its still hard.

I have been on 50 mg of Adderall a day for a few years now and I know what you mean about the tics. I do this weird thing with my tongue, where I thrust it against the back of my teeth. I sometimes do it so much that my tongue ends up sore and raw! Most people don't notice it, but some of my close friends do and tell me to "STOP!" Its not a huge deal and the benefits DEF. outweigh the setbacks! Overall this has been a life saver for me! However, I am a teacher for children with emotional distrubances and I have seen the obssessivness get OUT OF CONTROLL! Which can be a side effect. So if you notice yourself getting extremely compulsive see your doc, you may need to lower your dosage.

I have a question. My 7 year old daughter was diagnosed ADHD about 1 1/2 years ago. She was put on Concerta. We bounced back & forth trying to figure out the right dosage. A fill in Dr. changed her to Ritilin for about 4 weeks. Finally her Dr and I found that 18 mg Concerta in the am and a Clonidine at night. So this worked for about 1 year, and then last month she wasn't right. So her Dr. just put her on Adderall. I want some opinions to help me decide if this is the right medication for her. Any suggestions???? My point in this is her older sister also has ADHD but is not currently on medication because I saw very little change while she was on several different ones. So I sort of feel like they are guniea pigs and I am over reacting. It is summer now and I can't see any reason to medicate her because my main concern is for her to be able to learn in school. But, I am looking for help. I am seriously confused.

It s an upper in adults but its a downer in kids with adhd. Please ask ur doc before you try to make sure there are no bad things they found with it. Or a product call brainiums thru quixtar are all natural and work great as well. hope this helps.

Finding the right medication and dose to treat ADD often takes time and careful balance of desired outcomes and side effects. Since many things, such as increased stress, or changes in routine can affect ADD symptoms, discuss with your doctor how current changes in your life may be contributing to your symptoms and response to your medication. It may be worth discussing other available medicinal and non-medicinal approaches with your doctor.
