Question/Comment:

The only thing I don't like about fish oil is the taste that comes back when you burp...especially if you wait to long to eat after you take the capsules. I've found that buying enteric coated fish oil caps solves that problem...but those cost nearly twice as much as the regular ones. I guess I can live with fish burps...

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Fish Oil capsules for about three years. The reason started was I notice the doctors prescribe Fish Oil for some of the patients with Alzheimers where I work. Thank God I don't have that problem or any other problem with my mind but I figure ( what the heck) it can't hurt.Maybe it will ward off any further problems down the line. Besides many years ago when I was a child my grandmom give me a dose in a spoon in a liquid form called Cod Liver Oil. I Thank whom ever came up with capsules. But one thing is for sure , since I have been taking the Fish Oil I cannot remember the last time I have had a cold. My skin is good and my hair has grown.

Thank you that information is good to hear. I am a female 50 years old and have end stage renal disease and short term memory loss is a side effect of that plus my age but my mother had dementia when she died and I have been afraid every since. I am starting on a fish oil regiment and praying for the best. I will let you know in two or three months if i think it helps. I notice little things I forget even though I remember most of the time. Somehow I wonder why or how did I forget that?

Answer/Reply:

Cod liver oil and omega 3 fish oil are not the same thing. Please read the labels.

I take 3,000 ui of Fish oil a day- I am thinking of also taking Nattokinasa- My feet and hands get so cold- would taking BOTH of these products thin my blood TOO much? (I do not have high blood pressure)

67 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Do you have circulation problems? My mom has pretty bad circulation problems (she's had a bypass surgery on her leg to correct it, but it's still not great), and her hands and feet are always cold as well.

Question/Comment:

I s fish oil good for smokers? What is good for them??

67 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

stop smoking!!!

Answer/Reply:

For the person who asked if fish oil is good for smokers just what are you expecting it to do?I used to smoke. I was able to quit about ten years ago and I don't miss it one bit. My 31 year old daughter and my 28 year old son both smoke and it hurts me to my heart. Now I have heard both of them complain of cold hands.I have Raynaud's Syndrome probably from the years that I did smoke. I am mighty fearful that this is whats happening with them.

Try to stop smoking take your fish oil and have a Healthy andHappy 2009! !

70 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

A friend of mine has Raynaud's Syndrome and she never ever smoked. Not sure if it's related. One thing I know for sure, my youngest son (36) smokes... his Dad quit last year after 53 years and I quit in 2005 after 44 years. I am really praying hard for my son and his wife to quit at once. Smoking is a real treath to health! I wish I had known this when I was 16. I would be very active, having fun, looking forward to a great retirement... not the case at all!!! Wake up people!!!!!!!

Question/Comment:

I take fish oil for my high cholestrol and also for my bipolar illness. It seems to help both. I take the pills four times a day. I have been taking them for about 8 years. My cholestrol has been good, but I also take Levoxyl.137mg 3 days a week and Levoxyl .125mg 4 days a week. This also helps with my cholestrol. I also take Pravachol and Tricor for the cholestrol. I take other medicines for the bipolar illness as well.

Yes, fish oil does interfere with blood clotting, making your blood somewhat thinner. You should stop it a week before any scheduled surgery.

Question/Comment:

My doctor suggested that I take fish oil (4,000 mg per day) for aches and pains and for inflammation such as arthritis. I have only been taking it for about 2 1/2 weeks. Is there anyone out there, taking fish oil for the same reason(s), who can give me some idea as to how long it took to feel a reduction in the achiness?

Answer/Reply:

I take 3000 mg per day (70 yrs old). It took about 4 weeks for it to start to work on my pain from arthritis and fibromyalgia, but it works!!! I think it is a miracle drug! Besides that it keeps me from having to take medication for cholesteral.

Answer/Reply:

You might want to try 1000 MGgs of bee pollen daily. I have had bursitis since I was 18, and have used bee pollen since I was 22. I now have rhumitoid and osteo arthritis, but still move extremely well and without a lot of pain for my condition which is I have spinal stenosis and recently had my spine rebuilt. Both knees have been replaced, seven years apart and I virtually had no cartlage for near 12 years. I went for studies of new meds, but had to give up bee pollen for three weeks prior to starting and within three weeks of the program, I quit and went back to the bee pollen.

I take 2,000mg of fish oil 2x a day for aches, pains, inflammation, bowel issues and memory. You should start seeing a difference in 7 days and completely in a month or so.
I know of 2 other people taking this dose then weaned down and they felt great. You do have to be careful since it does thin your blood and this dose could be considered prescription dose. Advice blood drawers so they know and taper off if having surgery. You can have side effects if suddenly stopped.
My dog takes 1,000mg per day for IBS and it works great for her.

Question/Comment:

I was told by anesthesia to stop taking fish oil prior to surgery. Why? Does it affect clotting or anuthing like that?

53 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have taken fish oils for two years daily but was not told it can affect me during or after surgery. Should I be stopping it and garlic and statins?
Joe

Answer/Reply:

Fish oil can thin your blood esp. when at higher dose then 1 per day. If taking more then 2,000mg per day I would advise you to taper off since you could have side effects of suddenly stopping.
I always let blood drawers know so they are prepared to change tubes quickly.

Question/Comment:

Omega 3 by Neurovi.com helped me lower my cholesterol. The proof was in the numbers. I went from being a 33 year old high risk patient to now only about a few months later being completely healthy. High blood pressure runs in my family so I was always conscious about taking care of myself.. didn't know all it would take to "take me there" was a small pill or two a day! I would recommend it to anyone who has this problem or even any one who want s to increase brain function.. even prefer it over Nordic's Omega 3, Neurovi has increased levels of DHA and is much more affordable. They even offer promotions once in a while for 12% off the order.. I think the code to use now is "gift of health".

Question/Comment:

Although it was hard to find fish oil that had Omega 3, 6 and 9 in it, I did find it, in a Puritan Pride Catalog. I found that the difference for me, in taking the fish oil with the two extra Omegas in it was as significant as the effect of my anti-depressant, Effexor. Since the research says that only Omega 3 is necesarry, I don't know if this is because I had a brain hemmorage in March of 2004, or some of my other health issues, such as a low thyroid, but it makes a difference.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Walmart has it (Omega 3, 6, 9).

Answer/Reply:

Hi,
I found Omega 3 fish oil at CVS, under the brand name of "Life Fitness", they are 1000 mg's, 120 soft gels. They also have occasional "buy one and get one free" deals.

3 years ago I had open heart surgery. A triple bypass. I started taking fish oil at the advice of my brother and in only three weeks my cholesterol was way down. The good was up to 65 and the bad was down to 60. A total of 160 from the total of 285. I tell everyone I see to seek the benifits of this supplement. I am 54 and feeling great.

I am bipolar and Omega-3 really helps. I can tell a difference in my energy levels (not depressed) since I've been taking this vitamin.

Question/Comment:

I have severe dry-eye (hence, dry sinuses as a result), and an imuno disease that punches holes in the arteries of my kidneys (chronic nephritis). I took 1 - 3 1000mg Fish Oil softgels daily 1999-2003. 2004-now, I take 2 to 3 1200mg Rexall Brand (buy at Walmart) Borage, Flax and Fish Oil Blend = Flaxseed-400mg; Essential Oil Blend (Black Currant, Borage, and Evening Primrose)-400mg; Flaxseed Oil-400mg; Fish Oil-400mg; Omega-6 Fatty Acids-284mg; and Omega-9 Fatty Acids-94mg softgels. I switched because of the expected cardiovascular benefits that Borage and Flax are said to provide. At the very least, I would say that taking this blend has been a significant part in: 1) less severe dry-eye; and 2) reduction in progression of the chronic nephritis.

Oops!... Should be "2000mg" in the blended, vice "1200mg".
