Global Patient Feedback for Omega 3 ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I'm 36 year old female with high cholesterol and chronic back pain (plus IBS, allergies, etc). As I'm trying to get pregnant, I have stopped my lipitor and do not take Glucosamine (as I saw on labels that this is to be avoided during pregnancy). I'm still taking celebrex and acetaminophen for my back pain but I know eventually these have to be stopped after I'm pregnant. Is there any recommendation on what supplements I should take to keep my back pain as well as cholesterol on check (I started Omega-3-6-9 and think this should help... but it doesn't seem to do much on the back pain at all)? Many thanks.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
When trying to get pregnant, it is best to make a preliminary appointment with your obstetrician/gynecologist. He or she has experience with a variety of medical conditions and treating them during pregnancy and can advise you on how best to prepare for pregnancy. Your physician can also provide with a list of medications that is considered safer to take during pregnancy. Because your doctors will know your complete medical history, he or she can give you specific recommendations for your medical conditions.

It may seem strange at first, but I have discovered that one key to lowering cholesterol, high blood pressure diabetes, and a host of other maladies is FIBER! Eating raw vegetables is a good source for fiber. I take Benefiber every morning. I also take Fish Oil and Flax Seed Oil for cholesterol, joints, and to regulate high blood pressure. For back pain (I have no space in between my lumbar #5) I stretch before getting out of bed each morning, by pulling both my knees to my chest and holding them for 30 seconds or so, then hold them as I stretch my knees away from my body. I then repeat each motion with each leg, while holding my opposite leg off the bed. It is also good to try to walk as much as you can, even if it is in a store, holding on to a cart. I have been living with Rheumatoid Arthritis for 16 years. This is a "use it or lose it" disease, so I keep moving as much as I can. Much luck with your plans to have a baby!

Answer/Reply:
hi, when you are not pregnant, fish oil, 1200 mg, six a day plus red yeast rice, two tablets a day will lower your cholestrol, ldl and raise your hdl, but shouldn't take the red rice yeast when you are pregnant, there is no pain relief with fish oil, just be careful on the pain pills you take, i took lots of aspirin when i pregnant with my second child and she was born with a severe heart defect.
after the baby comes there are many natural products to help you out with pain and cholestrol.
have a great day now

It takes the fish oil a little while to start working well for your cholesterol and heart health. I haven't noticed that it helps with pain. I suffer from chronic lower back pain and spasms. The best drug free help I have found is a water aerobics class for beginners 4 days a week at my local university. The bouyency of the water relieves the pressure on my back allowing me to stretch and move the muscles around my spine and hips. I've been doing this for 5 weeks now and have noticed a considerable difference in my pain levels. As a bonus I am starting to lose some unwanted pounds as well, which, I think has also contributed to having less pain.

Currently I changed my Omega 3 Fish Oil to Omega 3 Krill Oil which is 40X more powerful than Fish Oil. Also is 32X more powerful than CoQ-10, and its Antioxidant activity is over 300X more powerful than vitamin A & E.
I have a Lipid panel and Nuclear Stress test this month, so I will find out first hand how well this Krill Oil works.
Will keep you posted.

Answer/Reply:
You are make some good point of views. I have notice the same regarding the effects of taking Fish Oil and having heartburn. You will also notice the effects that your blood pressure begins to jump up and down due to the heartburn causing you to have either a migraine or feeling dizzly. You may also feel the reaction of a small discomfort in your upper stomach. This could all be the reaction of the acids in our stomach working to desolve a volcano like effect from the medicine.
Take 1 to 2 8oz glass of water, go sit down, take controlled breathing (inhealing and exhealing repeatedly) steps for about 5 minutes. You may even want to close your eyes for about 5 minutes. You will notice that your Systolic drops and your Diastolic may run wild but eventually it will calm down. If you can not control it contact your doctor. Trust me getting high does not feel good and this is similar to the same effect. If taking Fish oil do not drink caffiene with it for at least 2 hours or go work out for about 30 minutes.

To reduce the fish burps my Dr told me to refrigierate the capsules after opening them. This seems to reduce the fish oil taste and burps! I use the Metagenics Omega 3. I moved to Fish Oil and Red Rice Yeast after Lipitor and Simiastatin caused my to have weakness in my legs and muscle pain in the evenings. This went on for serveral years, they worked very well but side effects were too much for me.

Answer/Reply:
To avoid the "fishy" heartburn associated with fish oil capsules, I was told not to take them within 20 minutes of warm or hot drinks & food. Apparently, the heat can dissolve them before they reach your stomach causing them to come back up. Probably the same principle as refrigerating them. It seems to work for me.

I love fish oil, I am always careful to buy ones made with small fish (sardines, etc) that is Mercury Free. I haven't had any problems with Nature's Bounty. I take one pill in the morning an done at night. I have found that I have less cravings for junk food when I am getting the "right" fats. This has helped me to lose a significant amount of weight! In addition, I take it to help my neurons stay healthy, I have a neurologic history, and to help my blood vessels (I have arterial insufficiency in my legs). My skin is in better condition when I am taking fish oil. My stomach is better, too, it seems to help with the IBS over time.

Has anyone had any problems with muscle cramping from taking fish oil? I started taking it about 2 months ago, 3 days in I woke with a horrible charlie horse in my right calf, then 2 days later terrible cramping in my left foot while driving. I stopped taking the oil, and had no more cramps.
Then, started back up again a few days ago, and sure enough woke at 3 a.m. with yet another charlie horse in the same calf. I believe I was taking 1000mg, once a day. I'm quitting them because I can't handle these cramps, espeically while driving. Curious if anyone else has had these problems. Only strong med I take is lorcet for pain - just weaned myself off morphine and no longer take that, so I've no idea of any interractions.

I have been taking Novaza (omega-3-acid ethyl esters) for about six months. This was to lower tri's..I was supposed to take four a day. Being sensitive, I started with one, went to two and then tried three. Three gave me pain in my calf, so I have stuck with two. I was interested in hearing that someone else had experienced pain in that location. I have not followed up with a blood test yet to see if the two are helping me out. Sure hope so.

Answer/Reply:
Firstly I assume you are taking LOVAZA not Novaza. Lovaza is composed of omega 3 esters i.e., fish oils intended to reduce LDL or what is called the "bad" cholesterol. I cannot recall if it has any effect on triglycerides. If you are experiencing calf pains that could be very serious, and you might be taking something else which is causing it. In any event, I would stop taking everything immediately and notify your physician as soon as you can.

I take Life Fitness Omega 3 Fish Oil, 1000 mg, I've been taking 1 a day for 14 months and have never experienced any side effects. However, I use to have serious leg cramps for about 20 years, approx. 1 a week. They were so bad sometimes I felt like crying, and would last for about 5 minutes, (sometimes longer). they would mostly occur when I first woke up and stretched my legs in bed.
I then discovered that when I bent my foot upwards, (as if you're trying to point your toes towards your face), the cramp would immediately go away. This works for me every time, as soon as I feel the cramp begin, I point my toes, and poof!, gone. I'm no longer afraid to stretch anymore in the morning, and it feels so good. I wrote WebMD about this remedy and they said they would further evaluate my claim.

You may be taking too much to start with, try to back down on the amount taken and slowley build up. If you need help with a good plan for bringing your levels down, try a naturopathic doctor. I am a 63 year old female and have recently started to take 4,000 mg of fish oil every day for inflammation in my joints. It seems to be helping me. This has not caused any cramping in my legs. However, a year or so ago I would wake up several times a night with cramping in either or both of my legs. I mentioned it to my doctor and he suggested that I take 500 mg of magnesium each day along with 1200 mg of calcium. Guess what? The cramps have never come back. Perhaps this may work for you.

I'm taking a statin called "Lescol" and is in capsule form rather than pill form because I'm lactose intolerant and all the other statins out there are made as pills--their ingredients bound together with lactose. Lescol is supposed to have the least amount of side affects of the statins. If you are having a difficult time paying for your drugs, then you should try Canada Drugs.com. Everything is much cheaper than here in the states. A 3 month supply costs approx. $82. They also have a generic "lescol" which is even cheaper. I even get a generic Restasis for my dry eyes from them at a very reasonable cost compared to the brand name. Maybe we should all buy from Canada and the prices of American drugs will then go down!

I have been taking one Omega 3 softgel 1000 mg for a few years. Don't know what is has helped but believed it was good for me. Recently I purchased CVS Natural Fish Oil 1000 mg and started taking two softgels per day. It seems that I have been nauseous with burping and tasting fish afterward. I was taking one in the morning and one in the evening. I have had these symptoms soon after taking each dose. I bought in the "two for one" sale. I stopped taking them yesterday and have not had the symptoms yet. I intend to return them to CVS.
Does anyone know where you can get a quality rating list of available Omega 3 softgels?

They are in soft gels which can be swollowed or chewed, also have a lemon taste. Customer care is 1-888-769-7873 or 1-800-281-7781. These soft gels are excellent. Let me know how you make out. cnagel12@verizon.net

We have been taking the "Member's Mark" brand Omega 3 fish oil from Sam's Club for years. 1000 mg per softgel and costs only $8.88 for a 400 count bottle. Don't be fooled by the prices at health food stores, thinking the product is better simply because it costs more. You have a common complaint regarding fish oil and not everyone tolerates supplements/meds the same. My husband has a sensitive stomach and has never had a problem with this fish oil. Since the Member's Mark is Sam's Club brand, they guarantee your satisfaction. Good luck and I wish you well.

Look at www.puritanspride.com - quality has something to do with the burping i think - I am used to taking a lot of pills though - I just make sure that it is after a full meal. that website has good deals and I have never had a problem with my omega3 and I do 2400mg daily- even 4800mg sometimes - no worries...

My husband's doctor suggested freezing the fish oil tablets, which really helps. I take 2 in the am and 2 at bedtime.

Omega 3 should never have a bad fishy aftertaste or burping with that side effect. This is a sign of a poor quality omega 3 which appears that they used rancid oil to make them.
This is common with "store brand" types. I get all my vitamins through Melaleuca and they are reasonably priced in addition to very good quality. Good luck!

Question/Comment:
I am using a Omega 369 product that does not contain fish oil hence no mercury by Natures Secret that is called Ultimate Oil. Flaxseed , Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vit E and Black Current Seed Oil. Omega 369 was outside my budget for a while but I finally decided it was worth it. Fish Oil does not agree with me. I know for a fact that including Omega's make a difference with my depression increasing motivation. Also healthier hair and skin. Heart benefits. It was part of my daily supplement program for years and in retrospect my health and sense of well being were enhanced. I stopped taking it when my income took a dive, but now I am seeing it as essential and manage to budget for it. Worth the price.

Question/Comment:
I HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF FISH OIL AND CAME ABOUT LEARNING OF KRILL OIL WHICH IS REPORTED TO HAVE HIGHER LEVELS OF ANTIOXIDENTS AND OMEGA-3'. IT'S ALSO REPORTED TO HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER RESULTS OF LOWERING LDL AND RAISING HDL LEVELS. I TAKE ASPRIN AND PLAVIX AS PERSCRIBED BY MY DOCTOR. THERE IS A WARNING TO PEOPLE WHO TAKE BLOOD THINNERS WITH KRILL OIL AND FISH OIL IN GENERAL. CONCERNING BLEEDING . DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SPECIFIC INTO ON THIS COMBINATION. I TRY TO GATHER AS MUCH INFO FROM AS MANY SOURCES AS POSSIBLE BEFORE I SPEAK TO MY DOCTOR

Answer/Reply:
I think it is better for you to speak to your doctor about it. Only your regular doctor can tell if the medications you are taking would have an adverse effect to fish and krill oil.

Answer/Reply:
I would advise that you speak to a pharmacist as they seem to be more knowledgeable about the herbals/supplements, including interactions - that's their job. I work with doctors and a lot of them go straight for the prescription pharmaceuticals and don't even want to talk about supplements. I get my "Healthy Cholesterol Support" product, which contains krill oil and phytosterols from Swanson Vitamins. Very reasonably priced and my cholesterol is down by over 50 points. Also, try to find out what type of cholesterol you have - A is like little ping pong balls that bounce around, B is the sticky stuff and A/B is a combination. A is the best type to have and means that you have a lower risk of heart attack due to cholesterol blocking the arteries - I'm in a study called HeartScore.

Question/Comment:
I have been trying to lower my cholesterol for years. Am now on Lipitor (80 mgs) to no avail. I have COPD, 71 years old and unable to exercise. I was put on fish oil approximately 2 months ago. I have a lot of burping, gas, my stomach churns. I will stop taking it for several days and it stops. Anyone got any suggestions as how I can keep taking this and stop the side effects.

Answer/Reply:
I've been tacking 1 Omega 3 Fish Oil capsule for a long, long time. I didn't realize that is why I have stomach-churn or gas. I'll look into the enteric capsules the woman mentioned in her 1-05 posting. The tricky thing is they have to be Omega-3 or they aren't effective (or so I'm told). I was taking just one a day when I ran into a woman who had a CABG and her doctor told her to take 3 a day. I moved up to 2 - more churning and more gas. They're pretty expensive to go to 3 so I'm holding off because I have no idea if they are effective or not. I'm on a low fat diet and take Simvastatin and my LDL is still over 100. So...I'm not a believer yet.

They make "odorless/burpless" pills and they do work. You can also take 2 GasX (or equivalent) in the morning and evening to help reduce churns and gas. Hope this helps!

I have taken several kinds of fish oil pills and I have had negative effects from some. Nature Made Fish Oil pills don't produce the adverse effects for me that some others do. I don't know if you'd benefit from trying a different brand.
I also have started taking Flax seed oil pills in place of the fish oil. It is supposed to have the same benefits.
Either way I usually take my pills w/food unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.

I have taken Fish Oil, but also have noticed I burp more when taking it. I tried Flaxseed Oil and I did not have the same symptoms. However, I always eat a little something before taking it, whether it is crackers or a piece of cheese. I would suggest trying Flaxseed Oil or talking with a pharmacist. Also many health food stores like GNC of Vitamin World can also give useful suggestions.

I took Lipitor, Lopid etc, for high cholesterol for many years. Breathing became so difficult, I was sent to a lung specialist. Was told these drugs were notorious for causing excess phlem, resulting in coughing and secondary bacterial infections. The result of long term use? COPD. These drugs also cause dizziness and leg problems. I now have PAD and leg cramps that are so painful, I cannot walk. Miracle drugs. The drug companies should be horsewhipped along with the doctors that prescribe this junk. You are better off with high cholesterol. Your quality of life would be much better.

I have been on Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega for over 6 years and have never had a problem. My doctor said that it is the quality of the oil that is used. I also have taken Krill Oil softgels from Dr. Mercola and they also did not cause any problem. My massage technician says that the more expensive oils are pure and that is why they do not make you taste fishy. Hope that helps.

Omega-3 fatty acid capsules should be taken with food or milk. An alternative, if it's okay with your doctor, is Prilosec first thing in the morning, then the omega-3 with breakfast or later.

Red Rice Yeast is an excellent product for lowering cholesterol. (Vitamin section) As for the fish oil, keep it in the refrigerator. It easily turns rancid and will cause the problems you describe. Just check to make sure it is cold processed from wild fish. Farm fish have lower levels of omega acids.

I take mine with a food with some kind of fat in it. Yogurt is perfect, or eggs. Also, maybe you need a different brand. I don't burp the Sprouts brand, but when I bought it at Walmart or a grocery store I would burp it up, pretty gross. Maybe buy it at a health food store, also the Norweigen fish oil is higher quality.

I have had the same problem. My solution: NatureMade makes a specific type of gel caps that says "Controls Fish Burps." You have to get the one that specifically says this (it's written in blue on the front of the bottle underneath the word Fish Oil). It has a harder coating so that it doesn't digest so quickly in the stomach. It has completely eliminated my fish burps. I hope this helps!
