Global Patient Feedback for Diovan (Valsartan) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
The addition of Diovan to my Toprol XL and HCT lowered my pressure from the 160s over 90 to 116 over 65 in a few weeks. Pulse is also is the 60 range. No side effects noticed after months of use. Doctor said it is fine to take all three together. However, if you take Synthroid as well, that should be separate by at least an hour. I eat a banana each day to make sure I maintain potassium (any diuretic can lower potassium). As I come from a stroke-prone background, I am pleased with this triple life saver.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Diovan and Tenormin have additive effects when taken together for hypertension. Since these medications work in different ways to lower blood pressure, these two medication can be used together to more aggressively decrease high blood pressure. However, when taken exactly at the same time, they may lower blood pressure too much, which could have contributed to your "head tremors." Separating out the doses, even by an hour, allows the body to process one medication at a time. In this way, you may be able to better control your blood pressure and avoid the side effects possibly caused by lowering your blood pressure too much.

I am a 66 year old male. On Diovan HCT for about 4 years, currently 160/12.5. I also take Plavix and Lipitor (20). For the last month I have had pain with touching or pressure in the right nipple. No swelling, lumps or discharge. No discernable difference in left and right side. I thought I hit or hurt it while working on the car. Only with pressure is there pain, right in the nipple, and it feels like a bruise, or pimple ready to break out. Some minor discomfort in surrounding tissue, but only with pressure. The seatbelt of the car goes over that area, and it is quite uncomfortable.

I am a 54 year old African-American female. I am takeing Diovan for almost a year.
I160 /25 HCT until a few days ago when I experienced shortness of breath with a shap
pierceing pain near or around my heart.
My blood pressurer was reading 188/102..I was given EKGthat show irregular heart beats
My blood pressure contiued to rise, Iwas given a nitroglisoran tablet to bring byblood pressurer down, and blood work was done twice to make sure there was no ezies in my blood that would show a heart attack.
When the pain first started I thought I had gas but the staving pains got worse. My heart started beating fast so I took an asprin.
The pain went away for about two hours, then came back worse then the first time
I tookanother asprin then went to the emergecy.
I called my Dr. and she increased the medication to 320/25 MG todayI took the increased amout. My blood pressure is still 158 or better, over 101
Is there any dater to show this Med has beeneffective for African-Americans ?
Are there other Africa-Americans takeing Diovan who will share their experience?

IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT DIOVAN, I AM A 63 YEAR OLD AFRICAN-AMERICAN FEMALE WHO HAS BEEN ON DIOVAN FOR APPROX. 11 YEARS. I AM BLESSED TO SAY THAT I HAVE NOT HAD ANY SIDE EFFECTS OR PROBLEMS FROM TAKING THIS MEDICATION. EARLY ON WHEN I FIRST STARTED TAKING THE DIOVAN I WAS ON 80/12.5 MG AND THIS WAS ABLE TO BRING MY PRESSURE DOWN CONSIDERABLY. HOWEVER, WHEN I CHANGED DOCTORS A COUPLE OF YEARS LATER, SHE CHANGED THE DIOVAN TO 160/12.5 MG BECAUSE SHE SAID SHE WANTED TO SEE BETTER PRESSURE READINGS. WITH BOTH, I HAVE NOT HAD ANY SIDE EFFECTS. HOWEVER, DURING MY FIRST YEAR ON THIS MEDICATION, DUE TO MY BODY ADJUSTING TO BOTH THE DIOVAN AND NEWLY PRESCRIBED PRAVACHOL MEDICATION TOO AND BECAUSE I WAS GOING THROUGH THE "CHANGE IN LIFE", I DID EXPERIENCE SEVERAL EPISODES OF HEART PALPITATIONS. HOWEVER, MY DOCTOR SAID THAT THIS CAN BE NORMAL AS YOUR BODY ADJUST TO THE MEDICATIONS. AFTER ABOUT A YEAR OR SO OF EXPERIENCING THESE (AND MANY EKG'S AND OTHER TESTS WHENEVER THE PAPITATIONS OCCURED, I NO LONGER EXPERIENCE THE HEART PALPITATIONS. I AM TRULY THANKFUL AND I KNOW THAT THROUGH PRAYER AND MY FAITH, GOD'S HAND HAS BEEN WITH ME BECAUSE I DID READ SEVERAL YEARS AGO THAT WITH DIOVAN, THERE ARE SOME AFRICAN-AMERICAN WHO CANNOT TOLERATE THIS MEDICATION WELL. I HOPE AND PRAY THAT EVERYTHING WILL WORK WELL FOR YOU TOO.

I am a 60 year old African American Female. I have been taking Diovan for almost a year 80/12.5 mg and just recently my doctor wanted to get better results for my blood pressure and changed it to 160/12.5. As I was reading your Comment, it was so much like me until I just had to respond. Everything in your letter was down to earth for me especially the part about putting God in the mix and that makes everything work out just fine. I feel pretty good most of the time. Sometimes my knees hurt but when I hear the many complaints of others, the pain in the knees seem insignificant and I just press on in Jesus.

Answer/Reply:
I was on 320 mg of Diovan for a year when I began getting stomach pain: early in morning, after taking vitamins, after taking Diovan and in between. After blood work, I was given an endoscopy. Results indicated gastritis (inflammation of stomach lining) and a hiatal hernia. The doctor gave me a twelve month prescription for Protonix (Insurance cost me $4.00 a pill) to be taken every day. Pamphlet that comes with pills says not to take more than 8 weeks at a time. I'd take it and stop for two months before going on again. Danger in long term use is one can develop pernicious anemia, something I want to avoid because my mom had that.
I decided to order pills from Canada. FIRST thing that shot up on Diovan was a comment in bold letters, saying CAUSES STOMACH PAIN. I told the doctor that I get the pain and it's as if a nerve sends a message to my brain and my blood pressure spikes to 180 and above. Doctor did not believe me. Thought I got anxious and stomach pain ensued. Wouldn't take me off Diovan until they could find something else to replace it. Suffered constantly from side effects of new meds that were added to the Diovan. FINALLY, in Jan. of this year I did research and asked to be placed on Micardis (same class of medication as Diovan, but without side effect of stomach pain.) Have been off for one month and BP is now down to 145/67. Praying, my stomach is finally healed after taking Protonix for 8 weeks straight.

My doctor just switched me to plain Diovan and off Diovan HGT after my sodium dropped to 116, my potassium went below normal and I had a very serious UTI. I thought he would take me off potassuim but the only warning shows up now for aspirin. I'm on daily aspirin treatment. Comments?

Answer/Reply:
I think the reason he put you on plain Diovan after the sodium and potassium problem is because the Diovan HCT has a diuretic (the HCT is hydrochlorothiazide) which can cause an electrolyte imbalance such as you experienced with the low levels of sodium and potassium.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
I, too, take Diovan and the generic brand of Metopro, Ext. Rel for Toprol XL. I have been on both drugs for over three years. I do have thinning hair, but mine is due to my thyroid. I am on thyroid replacement (Synthroid) because of Hypothyroidism which I have experienced for over 35 years. (I am a 68-year-old female). One of the symptoms for thyroidism is losing your hair until you get the condition under control. It is also hereditary as my mother, one sister and four of my brothers suffer with thyroidism to some degree. Talk to your doctor and have lab work done to rule out a problem with the thyroid or treatment if needed. Good luck.

Question: My doctor switch me from Toprol XL 200mg to Diovan. Toprol killed my sexual life. This is the reason my doctor switched me. He said Diovan would not cause this. However, after reading the packaging sheet it lists loss of sexual preformance as one of the side effects also.
It also list cough as a side effect also. I stopped taking a medicine years ago because of cough.
Has anyone experienced sexual disfunction or cough using Diovan.

Answer/Reply:
You should see your sex life return to normal. In fact, Diovan has shown to have benefits in regards to sexual disfunction. It dialates the Arteriols which increase blood flow into your sexual part. This study was small but i am not making this up. Toprol is a Beta Blocker which lists sexual disfunction as a very common side effect as well as fatigue.
You were probably on an ACE inhibitor when you developed a cough. Believe it or not the mechanism that causes the cough also aids in lowering blood pressure. Diovan does not allow the build up of bradykinin which is the cause of the Ace inhibitor induced cough so you shouldn't be caughing due to diovan.

Answer/Reply:
Diovan can make you go to the bathroom a bit more but lets look at what it is doing. It reduces a hormone called Aldosterone which causes your body to reabsorb sodium and water. Aldosterone causes you to have a higher volume of blood. (Compare this to having too much air in your tires). This causes stress on your blood vessel walls. By reducing your blood volume you have a lower blood pressure....thus prolonging your life.

Question/Comment:
I am allergic to sulfa. I was fine while my Diovan was 80mg but the doctor doubled the dose to 160. I have to drink tons of water which probably then flushes some of this drug out of my system. I get funny red spots on my arms. My doctor said almost all blood pressure medicines have sulfa in them. He is working to get me off Verapamil. I am not sure if I will need a supplement to take with the 160 mg of Diovan. This medicine has bothered my throat quite a bit and now I have squamous cancer in my throat. I have never smoked nor drank alcohol. I wish I had never started any of these medicines. Is it true that once you are on Diovan you can never get off it? Because my doctor will not let me quit taking it.

Answer/Reply:
Your doctor doesn't want you off of Diovan cause your Blood pressure would increase. And yes, you can get off of Diovan. Water does not flush diovan out thus weakening it. High blood pressure is a disease that worsens over time...yours might be getting worse ( are you exercising/eating better? this helps reduce blood pressure.) thus supporting your doctor's reason for increasing the dose. Diovan (once absorbed into the bloodstream) attaches itself to receptors thus blocking a hormone from causing your blood pressure to rise. Drinking more water won't knock diovan off of these receptors.

I am off the Verapamil and cutting my Diovan in half. I have lost ten pounds and down to 145pd. So the 160 is overkill. My blood pressure was dropping to 98/50 I think doctors are crazy for these drugs. They are nothing but legal drug pushers backed by the pharmaceutical companies.
As soon as I can, after my radiation treatment, I will work on getting off the Diovan. Go type in patient complaints on Diovan and see what you find. It will make your hair stand on end. I also took an ace inhibitor before Diovan that gave me blisters and infection all over the back of my throat around my tonsils. So, to that 32 year old commenter, how would you like that side effect. OH and coughing all night long. I think I would rather die of a stroke. You must be a physician.

There were no drug interactions found between Diovan (valsartan) and Triamterene in the iGuard database. Triamterene comes in doses of 50 mg and 100 mg tablets. It is also comes in a dose of 37.5 mg combined in a tablet with another medication called hydrochlorothiazide. The label on your prescription bottle should list what strength is in the bottle. If it does not list the strength, you should return it to your pharmacy and ask them to label it correctly.
