Question/Comment:

My son has been on concerta for 2 years. Kindergarten was a nightmare because he was having such a hard time dealing with everything. He would hide in lockers under tables ect.. Also he was very emotional and would sometime hit and kick teachers who would try to make him mind. I never had allot of problems with him at home. The stress of school made him a different boy. I was called into the school on an average of 4 times a week, and sometimes more. I had to quit my job to be on call. There was rumors around that it had to be our parenting. We went to a wonderful behavioral specialist and consoling. Where we found out that we are not bad parents. We really are good parents. We found out it was ADHD the school was shocked, we were shocked and all the other nosy people in our town. (We lived in a small town) Concerta worked so well the first day he took it that it blew everyone away. Some of the teachers at school told me that they are sorry they thought that he was doing things intentionally not realizing that it was not his fault. He got most of the way caught up in school in 3 months. He is now in 1st grade and recently had a hard time keeping up in his class. We changed his dose from 18mg to 27mg and now is doing much better. It changed my son's life. He is able to learn and has calmed him down allot. I am worried that maybe there will be side effects for long term use, but he can not have a normal life without it right now. I have been called to the school 1 time this year. To pick him up because he was sick.

I just wanted to let people know that I have two boys ages- 11 & 8. They both take concerta 1x a day and their doses are 11 year old- 54 mg & 8 year old -36 mg. They both are great kids, get honor roll all year long and I have only had problems a few times, then we realized their doses had been the same for over a year and needed to be increased. Since then no problems. We had tried medadate, didn't work, my oldest picked up ticks, a few others until we found concerta. I know my kids need these medicines so thats why I would recommend concerta to any one so their children don't have to go through trying all sorts of medicines. I felt like my son was a ginipig.

Answer/Reply:

You didn't find Concerta too strong? I have 2 kids with ADHD and tried numerous meds. The one we liked the most was Medadate at 40 ml for my 7 and 9 yrs old kids. Concerta made them crazy and a zombie where as Medate, they are still your "kids" but calm not zombie like. I've tried a couple times to take them off and been to different behavioral therapy but sometimes they just need the meds and therapy.

Hi I have a son who is in the 4th grade and he has been on Concerta for the last 2 years and I have seen improvement in his behavioral, there is one thing that I'm concened about and that is he very emotional and the teachers say that he has a hard time expressing his felling and starts to cry and has a hard time pulling his self together after that. And I'm also worried about his weight and height. Does anyone else out there haveing the same issue with there child?

Question/Comment:

My 13 yr old daughter has been on Concerta 18mg for about 4 years for ADD. This is a time release pill so that she does not have to go to the nurse during the day and take another pill before she can complete her school day.
I have tried to take her off and not tell any teachers but after about 2 weeks, I received a letter from the school requesting that I attend a meeting with her teachers.. Her lack of interest and focus became a big issue therefore causing me to have to put her back on the meds.. Since then, I have had no problems..
My olny issue is that she only takes the pills on school days so after a long weekend, come Monday she tends to get a headach.. Nothing a little chocolate won't take care of.

My 8 yr old is also on concerta, 27 mg and has been 2 years now, but now he started to develop "tics", constant shaking of his head, am told by his Doctor that it is due to being on the concerta for so long.Anyone else experience such problems on concerta?

Answer/Reply:

My daughter, 11, is on Metadate CD, she has been for about a year and a half. Due to insurance issues, she was put on the generic, methylphenadate (sp?) twice a day. Somewhere in all this, she also has developed "tics", jerking of the head and arms, making throat noises (even during conversation). Her Dr. thought it might have been the switch and put her back on the Metadate CD with a letter to the insurance about the reason behind this subscription. The hope is that her tics will diminish. I'm not seeing much change, though it hasn't quite been a month yet. Anyone else have this issue? Do the tics go away? I'd like to get her off meds, but her concentration and hyper behavior get her in trouble at school without it.

37 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Oh, and I am not 11, my daughter is.

37 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

There have been rare reports of Tourette's Syndrome by patients taking methylphenidate. Tics are one of the major symptoms of Tourette's Syndrome. Switching from brand to generic may have brought on the tics but it is more likely a coincidence. If the tics are still concerning you, it is a good idea to further discuss them with your daughter's doctor and see if he or she wants to make a change to your daughter's medication.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

ALL THE MEDICATION FOR ADHD ARE MENT TO TAKE ON A DAILY BASIS....YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO MISS ANY DOSES.. IT DOES NOT WORK AS WELL WHEN YOU DO TAKE IT.. YOU WILL SEE A BIG CHANGE ON MONDAYS IF SHE TAKES IT ON THE WEEKEND.....IT IS A STIMULANT THAT IS THE REASON FOR THE HEADACHE...

My son was just started on ritalin today and he is 5 years old and i have heard some weird storys about it and i feel a lil bit relieved knowing that my son isnt the only small child taking it.......but if anyone has any advice for plz let me know i would appreciate it .....his doasage is 5mg 2 times daily........any certain way i should give it to him??? i thought about 1 time in the morning and and right before he goes to bed

26 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My son is now 16 but he started taking ritalin/methylin when he was five. It helped him to focus and control the add better. If this is why your son is taking it you should give it to him in intervals of 4-6 hours. It was a long time ago when my son took it but the dosage seems small. I am not saying it is too small, your doctor is the only one who can determine that. My son and me went through many trials and tribulations but he is a responsible, healthy and happy young man now. He still takes medication but now it is concerta. Concerta came out when he was a young teenager and helps to reduce the up and down affect that ritalin can have. Good luck and trust your instincts.

my son is taking metadate cd which is a time released capsule ( in ritalin family) it opens up and i can sprinkle it on applesauce since he hates swallowing pills. I love it for him since he doesnt get zonked from it and i only have to give it once a day because its time released.
My son is 7 years old. He was on this since he was 5.

Answer/Reply:

You should check with your doctor to make certain of the times. Some medications are extended release and last up to 8 hours, therefore might be beneficial before school and them after school for evening activities. Most stimulants can interfer with sleep, so night time might not be best. Again., check with your docotor on times of day and also by observing your child and writing down any side effects to report to your doctor.. 5mg 2 times a day seems sufficient for a 5 year old.

YOU DON'T WANT TO GIVE RITALIN BEFORE BED.. IT IS A STIMULANT.. HE WILL HAVE A REALLY HARD TIME SLEEPING.. YOU GIVE IT TO HIM IN THE MORNING AND WITH LUNCH SO IT IS WORE OFF BY BED TIME.....I HAVE 3 BOYS WHO HAVE ADHD 2 STILL TAKING MEDICATION AND IN HIGH SCHOOL.....I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT DIFFERENT MEDS. IN THE LAST 16 YEARS....MY BOY'S ARE NOW 21, 18, AND 17....THEY STARTED AT AGE 5 ON RITALIN AND NOW TAKE FOCALIN 20MG. ONCE A DAY. IT WORKS VERY WEL...MY 17 YEAR OLD WAS TAKING 130MG OF RITALIN A DAY.. I WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE DOCTOR FOR THAT I GOT A NEW DOCTOR....YOU ALSO WANT TO KEEP AN EYE ON BLOOD PRESSURE AND BLOOD SUGARS...DOCTORS WON'T TELL YOU BUT BEING ON THIS MED. FOR A LONG TIME DOES START MESSING WITH THEM....I LEARNED THAT WITH THE 17 YEAR OLD...

My son is on ritalin he is 12 but no matter what the age I have found one pill in the morning after eating and then another after lunch make sure he has eaten first no matter what, other wise they lose their appetite and also feel sick to their stomach. Do not give medication just before bed it can cause stomach discomfort and last till he wakes in the morning.

My son, now 20 years old, was on Ritalin while in Elementary school. Then when he was in Middle school the doctor took him off Ritalin and put him on Concerta.Reason being is that Ritalin needed to be taken during school hours, whereas with Concerta he just takes one pill in the morning and Concerta lasts all day. He is now an adult still deaing with his ADHD.

Answer/Reply:

You did not say if this was the short acting or time released medication, but since your Dr. advises twice a day, I will assume this is the short acting variety. Do not give ritalin at night. This type of medication is a stimulant and if given at night will keep your child awake, more importantly, you child need his meds during waking hours. My Dr. perscribed short acting for the morning and afternoon hours. If your child is in Kindergarten that would be 45 min before school and after lunch time. My boys have been on ADD and ADHD meds since they were 5 years old (they are 8 and 9 years old now) and are able to concentrate in class and do very well.

47 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My son takes Concerta but I teach special education in elementary school and I have many students who take ritalin. they take one in the morning and then one at noon. You should probably talk with the pharmacist who filled the prescription for you or the doctor to make sure. Ritalin is a controlled substance and the pharmacist is suppose to tell you each time how to take it.

Question/Comment:

Six months after being put on Concerta I received a raise at work. Concerta has improved my cognitive abilities more than I ever expected. I also take Paroxetine for depression and know now that Concerta will increase the effectiveness of Paroxetine keeping higher blood levels between doses so I've been able to cut my Paroxetine dose in half. I do, however, make sure I take my Concerta well before noon so I am able to sleep well at night. I take my Paroxetine right before bedtime as one of the side effects is yawning. This routine seems to work the best for me. Sometimes I wonder how much better I could have done in high school and college if I'd had Ritalin. I struggled terribly in school and didn't learn to enjoy reading until after I'd been on Concerta for several months.

Question/Comment:

My son is 24 years old. He suffered a severe Traumatic Brain Injury when he was 20. Ritalin in combination with Aricept work in a different way for him. He doesn't need to calm down. It wakes him up so to speak. It helps his concentration, his memory, his attention. It has really helped. I do think he needs his dosage increased, but it has been an amazing help for him.

25 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I definitely didn't have a brain injury, but I'm the same way. When I was 20 I was put on ritalin to help me stay awake because I couldn't keep awake through class and studying... amazingly, all of a sudden I could study and concentrate in ways I couldn't before. It was amazing...

25 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Actually, I heard that at least one form of ADD is caused by a slow firing or not enough firing of the neurons. So, I suppose the ritalin speeds that up, making cognitive function sharper. People like me with ADHD, I heard from my professor, might be hyperactive because they are trying to stay alert, thus moving around all the time. I know I have always suffered from feeling tired and actually got diagnosed with a milder form of narcolepsy before my diagnosis of ADHD. It sounds contradictory, but if I sit and don't do anything I usually get completely lethargic. When I started taking ritalin, I all of a sudden had more energy, yet I was also much more calm and less anxious. And strangely, I can usually sleep on it. And unfortunately I don't loose my appetite. I could use the weight loss! Sometimes I wonder if I am on too low a dose. But it has been very helpful for the most part.

40 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

OH my gosh, me too. The brain injury, that is. I'm 42, the injury was a little over a year ago. I've had a lot of trouble with paying attention, focusing, staying on task, getting anything at all done, etc. Ritalin has helped quite a bit. I was on just 5mg, but last week starting taking twice that. I'm curious about what doses others are taking. So far I'm not seeing any side effects from it.

43 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My son is 8 years old and ADHD. He takes 20mg twice a day. He is very smart and the medicine helps bring that out by helping him focus at school.I am very satisfied with the results with no side affects.

8 year old Male

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Ritalin for 27 years. My body seems to process it rather quickly so my dosage is high. With it I hardly feel the effects of my ADHD. I can stay focused and productive. Without it, I can never seem to finish anything I start - and I start way more things than I could EVER finish. Just have your doctor watch for problems and you should do fine. Start slow with the dosage and add gradually. One thing I've noticed is that it is not good to be alert at school and then have the med. run out at homework time. This causes a lot more problems than it solves. Talk with your doctor and have the med. stretched to cover this time also. My kids went through this too, and this is the one thing I would stress!

Answer/Reply:

I take RItalin for narcolepsy. i used to have a problem with the roller coaster effect, since RItalin has a rapid onset of action, and a short half-life. I suggested to my doctor that he prescribe a combination of the sustained action dosage (to keep s constant baseline level, together with the regular dosage, in the event that I needed the level boosted. He agreed to try that regimen.I have been able to get more consistent action with more time between drug holidays this way.

53 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I had the same problem when I started taking Ritalin for ADHD. Once it wore off, I would 'spike' so to speak. It would leave me more hyper than before! It was easily solved with the regimen you spoke of. I hope it continues to work for you!

34 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My son takes Concerta instead of Ritalin for ADHD and he no longer has the spikes. He takes on pill in the morning and a very small dose of Ritalin to help him do his homework and this works very well for him. He is now 16 but started taking Ritalin at 5.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

My son is 6 and on this medication if I don't give him his omega vitamin in the morning homework time is hard. But I have found that by adding that one vitamin to his lists of meds in the morning home work time is easier and he is able to eat lunch since his meds last a little longer they can wait a little longer for his afternoon dose. The omega seems to help with the constipation too although he does still need a laxitive occasionally. That of course is as long as he isn't on steroids for his asthma.

Question/Comment:

i have a 20 year old son who has adhd and considered mild mentally retarded by the school district, he has taken Ritalin, Adderall and now Concerta since age 5, but yet the man can function on his own. He is able do things like go shopping, take his little sister places, his has even hold a couple of jobs. his reading and math levels are low, but i blame the district. Especially when he comes home everyday telling you that they teach him the same thing over and over again and again, year after year. he has mood swings, but has finally been put on medication for it. So now he takes two kinds medications. Together they help but not by themselves. the second med., was not started until about a year ago. Sometimes he wants to act like a child, especially when he gets distracted. his attention span is also very short. he is unable to do more than two tasks at once it confuses him, just to focus on two things at one time, depends on the situation. it is hard for him to stay on task. he can't go to sleep at night even with the meds., and to get him up in the morning is like pulling your eye teeth out. So as you can see I have had a lot to deal with raising a child with disabilities. Oh, by the way i also have three more children. One older and the two younger, one much younger. they are 22, 18, and 10. If you wonder it wasn't and still isn't easy, they all still live home.

51 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Jean, I'm curious why you were put on the Vyvanse. Have you been diagnosed with ADHD too? Was it prescribed for your stress? I ask because my 15-year-old son was just prescribed it for ADHD along with Sertraline (Zoloft) for his bi-polar depression. I haven't been able to find much about it either and I see there aren't enough people on this site who have reported using it to start a question & comment about it. We've tried a number of meds for him over the years. It's so difficult in children because they are growing and developing so much things change over night sometimes. Please post how the med is working for you. I'm not feeling to great about it for my son. It's been six days...six rough days.

I wish you well and my prayers while going through this difficult time with the divorce. It's never an easy thing to go through. My folks divorced when I was in 5th grade after 19 years of marriage. It was very difficult at the time, but ultimately I really believe it was the best thing that could have happened for all of us in the end. Take care, be strong, keep your chin up. Debbie.

I wish I knew that I should be taking it regularly instead of symtomatically. I used to be on Concerta and only used Methylin in the afternoon when I needed to study and/or do projects. My doc told me I should take it three times a day anyway, even if I don't need to study very hard that day, because it helps me with everyday tasks and forgetfulness.

Answer/Reply:

My son will turn 14yrs. old in January. He has been on Concerta for about 2yrs now. I have know he has ADHD since he was in kindergarden but never wanted him on medication. After the first 2 days of taking it, he sat and was working on something and writting neater then I have ever seen him write. He looked up at me and said he finally didn't feel like he had to go so fast. He hit puberty and is growing like a weed now. He gets A's and B's in school and other then a day here or there, he doesn't act up or he is not restless at school like before. For my son, this has been a good medication for him. He takes 36mg a day now. He really doesn't seem to have any side effects from it either.

CONCERTA makes you more of who you are, not less. For a long time I struggled with the idea of taking a stimulant because I thought that maybe it would be giving me an "unfair" advantage over my peers. Then I found out that my Epworth sleepiness scale was 17, while their's were in the 4-7 range. That helped me to better understand that Concerta didn't give me an advantage, it just leveled the playing field, and helped me to be the student that I was before depression manifested itself in attention deficit modalities.
