Question/Comment:

I have suffered with Restless legs for years and didn't know what it was until I talked to my daughter, who was taking the Requip for the kicking of her legs during the night. Ever since I started taking the Requip, about 2 years ago, I have found that my symptoms have worsened during the daytime....is this normal??? My daughter has since gone to see an alternative Dr. and he prescribved Magnesium Glycinate which she takes at bedtime and her kicking has stopped.

60 year old Female – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Sometimes side effects can include restlessness in general. Speak with your doctor about possibly adjusting your dose. Sometimes stretching can help as well as other supplements. Ask your doctor to do blood work to see if you have any deficiencies that could be contributing to the restless leg syndrome. Do not start any supplements without your doctor's approval so that your medication record is complete.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking ropinerole for a couple of months and gradually increased the dosage from 1mg to 4 mg taken at bedtime. With the lower dosage my RLS was still bad and did get better with the higher dosage, but I have constant nausea which starts within 20 minutes after I take my dosage and flares up off and on during the day. I have been gradually reducing the dosage and am now down to 2 1/2 mg daily. I am still having the nausea so at this time am thinking of going back to Mirapex. Before the ropinerole I was on .75 mg of Mirapex and this helped, but was very expensive. I am also unsure of just how to go back to the Mirapex, if I should go off the ropinerole for awhile, and suffer the lack of sleep and RLS then start the Mirapex, or just stop one and start the other. I also have a lot of sleep problems even when I am on the ropinerole. Any ideas?

72 year old Female – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

It should be fine for you to stop the ropinerole and go back to the Mirapex. Make sure to speak with your doctor first, as it is never a good idea to change medications on your own. You can also ask about a sleep aid, like Ambien, Lunesta, or Rozerem, if insomnia is an issue. You may also want to have sleep studies performed to better identify how your sleep is disrupted. Sleep studies can identify problems like sleep apnea, which is treated with a machine that provides additional oxygen while you sleep.

Question/Comment:

I have experienced one of the less publicized side effects of requip, which I take for severe RLS. Some people find that they have less control over behaviors which might be considered compulsive, such as gambling, drinking, over spending. All people taking this drug should be made aware of this side effect.

Question/Comment:

I Ilive in Portugal and have been taking Requip LP for 2 weeks at 2 x 8mg daily, my chemist is now unable to acquire the drug, have spoken to the consultant and he has suggested that I try the Neupro patch at the same dose. This is not available in Portugal and I will have to buy it in Spain, has anyone tried the patches.?
Struggling with meds in Portgual.

65 year old Female – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Neupro patches have been unavailable in the Unites States since April 2008 but may be available internationally as you have mentioned. Neupro is a patch system that helps increase a chemical called dopamine. Requip works to increase dopamine in your body as well. Although they act differently, they both have similar end results and could help your condition(s). You should consult your doctor to determine the best dose and if it is appropriate for your medical conditions before you attempt to acquire the patches.

Question/Comment:

I don't have RLS anymore but my legs start cramping every time I lay down in a bed. I am also having trouble with my legs & feet swelling, but the excess fluids do not go to my heart. Is this normal? It only started when I started taking this med.

44 year old Female – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Ropinirole can cause peripheral edema in patients taking it for restless leg syndrome. Peripheral edema is defined as an accumulation of fluids in extremities, such as the ankles, legs, and feet. Muscle pain has also been reported with ropinirole when used for restless leg syndrome. If either of these symptoms is affecting your quality of life, talk to your physician about the symptoms and whether or not you should continue use of this medication.

Question/Comment:

I am a 59 year old white male with RLS. I take 2MG twice daily of Ropinirole it is not strong enough. I take one after dinner and the other at bedtime.I need to ask the doctor to increase the dosage to 5MG twice a day. It does help and I like the genneric version of Requip. I also experience drowsiness at times after dinner.

I recommend Requip/Ropinirole for anyone who has RLS.

Question/Comment:

Does anyone taking requip find that after the first morning dose, I take 5mg 3 times a day, that they feel very ill, un-co-ordinated, very sick and have trouble walking. My doctor has suggested I take requip xl 8mg twice a day, anyone out there on this regime. I am a fit 65 year olld woman, living in Portugal.
Interested to hear anything similar. Jean R

65 year old Female – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Dizziness, nausea/abdominal pain are among the most common side effects when taking Requip. It is likely that a higher dose in the morning is going to cause similar or worsening of your side effects. You may want to talk to your doctor about lowering your dose to see if you have fewer side effects and can maintain the benefits of the medication. You could ask your doctor about the extended release version (Requip XL) - the extended-release version may decrease these side effects because the medication would be slowly released over a longer period of time. However, please be aware these same side effects are reported by patients who take Requip XL.

Question/Comment:

I am a 56 year old female with RLS. There is absolutely no way I could sleep without Requip. It is
terribly terribly uncomfortable if I try not to take it. If I don't the only way to ease it is to get up and do something which means no sleep. Even bothers me with my sleep medication if I do not use the requip. I was so thankful they had it to help.

Question/Comment:

Does rls get worse as you get older. My ropinirole does not seem to be working as well, should i increase the dosage.

61 year old Male – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Your body can get used to the effects of certain medication, which can cause a need for your dosage to be increased. Restless leg syndrome can also get worse with age. You need to make an appointment with your physician to discuss changing your dose. You should not change anything about your medication without talking to your doctor first.

I AM A 45 YEAR OLD FEMALE WHO HAS HAD RLS FOR YEARS. I LOST MANY HOURS SLEEP TRYING TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM ON MY OWN. FINALLY I REACHED A POINT THAT I TALKED TO MY DOCTOR. Question/Comment:

I am a 76 year old male taking 10 mg of oxycontin hcl 3 times daily for pain (severe spinal stenosis) and taking 4 mg of ropinirole 3 time a day for RLS.
Ropinirole is very effective for my RLS however by late afternoon-early evening I feel like an episode of syncope is coming on, I can't keep my eyes open.
I take the oxycontin at 7 am, 12 noon and 8 pm. I take the ropinirole at 12 noon, 5 pm and 10 pm.

77 year old Male – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

I am this 76 rear old male and retired pharmacist. I could not keep my sanity without Requip/ropinirole, I've noticed little differance between name/generic brands. Since I must take oxycontin for severe lumbar stenosis I must be careful to stagger taking these drugs or I experience syncope-like symtoms. This is a frightful experience for me because I had an syncope episode on the interstate crossed the median causing the death of a 57 year old in the other car and almost the death of my wife. When taking these 2 drugs avoid driving if possible. It only takes a nano second to nod off. Most narcotics combined with requip can cause this.

Question/Comment:

I used to take Requip, after I went to a sleep study in NC, where they hooked me up to monitors and looked at my brain waves all night long. They said my brain was waking me up 200 times a night, never allowing me to go into REM sleep. No wonder I slept all day! The doctor said, "you have Restless Legs, you don't have Sleep Apnea, but it runs in your family. I'm guessing this will work." It worked GREAT. I was able to stay up all day. I'm on Medicare, and after some time, the pharmacy said I had to switch to Ropinorole. After 2 months on it, I realized it didn't work as well. My doctor tried to write a script saying, "no substitutions allowed'. The pharmacist said, "You are on Medicare. you have to take the generic." So I went back to the doctor who prescribed the Requip, and they said, "You were one of the first people in our study to use the Requip, so we don't have enough data, but you could try the Gabapentin or the homeopathic 'Restful Legs'. I've tried them both, and nothing has equaled the results I got on Requip. Maybe my brain injury is getting worse.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and was recently prescribed Ropinirole (1 mg.). I was astounded that after only a few pills, I regained feeling in my fingertips which I have not had for about 6 years. I'm excited about this medication and can't wait to see how further use can improve my condition.

I AM A 78 YEAR OLD MALE THAT IS BEING TREATED FOR SYMPTOMS OF PARKINSON'S. I HAD BEEN TAKING 4mg OF EQUIP XL DAILY . I HAVE UPPED MY DOSE TO 6 mg AND SHORTLY AFTER I STARTED I TO EXPERIENCE DOUBLE . VISION. MIGHT THIS HIGHER DOSAGE BE A CAUSE OF THE DOUBLE VISION?

78 year old Male – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

At this time, no iGuard members taking Requip have reported double vision as a side effect. The prescribing information for Requip has no reports of double vision either. The double vision could be caused by some other issue. Please make and appointment with your physician to discuss your symptoms and determine the possible causes.

Question/Comment:

I've been taking generic Requip for at least 8 years for restless legs and had no side effects on my 2 pills at bedtime. Recently my Dr. found that another Dr. had me on Haldol 1 tablet at bedtime. These two drugs cancel each other out so he took me off the Haldol and over a period of 6 weeks increased my Requip to 6 pills a day . About week 8, on the 6 tabs, I noticed my feet and legs swelling up and nausea and bloating plus ibs, lower back pain and sicatica. My DR. sent me to the Emergency room and they ruled out kidney failure, congestive heart failure and deep leg thrombosis. No one was able to give me an answer as to the cause. I looked up all of my many meds on line and found that my problems were listed as side effects of Requip. My neurologist is quickly weaning me completely off Requip. This is as of 7/6/09. Hope this gets rid of my problems as I have enough already without adding bad side effects. He is putting me back on the Haldol and hopefully something else for the restless legs. My lower back pain goes down into my buttocks and is so bad that I have to limp sometimes to get around. I also am treated for ulcerative colitis and certainly don't need a drug to give me more diarrhea, bloating and cramping. Does anyone else any or all of these symptoms? 68 YEAR OLD FEMALE

Question/Comment:

I had been taking Requip 3 mg three times a day for Parkinson Disease. I am a 58 yr old female that was diagnosed 2 years ago. Because of an increase in symptoms my dose was
increased to 5 mgm. I was able to function and no longer suffered from hand tremors and leg
rigidity. I was switched to generic Ropinirole. My symptoms for Parkinson's remained
controled however I am now experiencing leg swelling and difficulty and painful ambulation
from hip pain. When I wake up the pain is sometimes in the right hip and other times it's in both.I've had a cardiac workup for the leg swelling and it was negative. I've cut out salt in my diet
and I continue to swell ( sometimes severe ) I will be seeing my neurologist soon but I'm curious
to see if anyone else has experienced these problems.

I find your comment very interesting since I too switched to Ropinirole and experience pain in the right hip during the early hours and when I wake I have to take something for the pain and to get moving. I do not have parkinson, but have horriable spasams in my right leg. Thank you for commenting, I will mention this to my neurogurgen. Maybe he can help.

Question/Comment:

I had surgery March 3rd 2009 on my stomach (lapriscopic) to remove a small tumor. Everything is okay. After awhile I started to get RLS A nerve spasm starts at the toes and goes all the way up. I tried Over the counter and nothing helped. I also took naranton. No help. I decided to go to my neurologist and he looked up my records and came to the conclusion that while in the hospital they gave me some medication which robbed the dopamine from my brain and that's why I have RLS. It's damn horrid. I am taking Requip 1 @ bedtime. It'seems to do ok but not good enouogh. I still get the spams different times of the day. He said if the 1 pill doesn't help to take 2. He wants me to be on it for 6 mths and then ween me off to see if the requip mends the brain. Anyone give me some input I would appreciate it.

Member Answer/Reply:

I would not count on being able to withdraw from this medication after 6 months. Once the damage is done, it's done.
My RLS surfaced after many years of the damage done.
The base cause of RLS is an insufficiency of Ferritin in the brain. Not Dopamine insuffiency.
Dopamine insuffieciency can cause tremors and similar effects but it is NOT TRUE RLS.
You may have a better result with a medication such as Neurontin.

Wishing you all the best.

I started using Requip 2mg about 5 years ago for RLS due to type 1 diabetes complications. At first it didn't seem like enough, but I stuck with it, and now I only use it as needed, about twice a week and feel good.

I have RLS and taking ropinirole. It did't last long. My doctor and I decided to cut one pill in half and take at noon and the other half around 5. Before I go to bed I take the whole pill. There are times I need to take half the pill early in the day, when my legs kick in. I am taking 3mg. Stay away from salt. It triggers RLS especially if you have salt at night. I downloaded a book off the internet about RLS. It was very helpful! Salt is the enemy for this condition. Try it for a couple of weeks and then go back to the salt and see what happens. I am 47 year old female and have had this for several years.

I just started taking Requip XL about a month ago; switching from Mirapex for my RLS. I was gradually increased to 8mg a day, taken at bedtime. I have severe RLS and it too affects my arms and will attack during the day too, not just at night. I'm miserable!! So far I find that the Mirapex works better but maybe I need to be on the Requip a bit longer to tell for sure. I have noticed since starting the 8 mg that I have an overall shaky feeling. I feel like my whole body is shaking and I'm queasy. I hope this will subside. I know that it has helped me sleep better.

I would never never never never stop taking my 8 mg of Requip nightly. It is the only way I can avoid the unbearable pain of RLS, and yes, it affects my arms too. I am certain that the Requip has side effects, but I am willing to live with the downside to reap the benefits of a restful night.

I am a 61 year old female who has taken Requip for about four years now. Started out with a low dosage and I am now taking 5mg at night. Until this drug came along I was miserable day and night because I couldn't get any sleep. On really bad nights it woud affect my arms also. My mother had RLS as well as my sister. I find that if I am really stressed about something it seems to make it worse. Do you find this to be true? If I get too warm it affects me so I have found putting my legs and feet in the shower with cold water sometimes help. I know that sounds crazy but you do what you have to. Hang in there with the Requip.....!

I am surprised by that problem. I am 67 years old and have used Requip for over a year. It is the only thing that allows me to sleep comfortably all night without my legs jerking all over the place. I do not suffer any ill effects from the drug. Personally, I am grateful for it. I spent four months previous to taking it with no sleep at all, even with the help of a sleep aid. I am sorry it affects someone in a bad way. Perhaps the lady should speak with her doctor about that, if she has not already done so. There could be some other medical problem that is causing this affect. Hopefully, she is following the directions of not taking it on an empty stomach or more than a hour before she plans to go to bed. Barbara California

I take 1.5 milligrams and hour and half before bed and, yes, it does take the edge off how good I feel. I feel lousy and not like doing anything but going to bed and even then I may or may not sleep. How many milligrams are you taking, when and how often?

You will get used to it once you have taken it for awhile. I sometimes have that reaction if I take it on an empty stomach so I always try to take it after eating.

I took requip for a couple of years before I retired and never felt better. I had more energy than I had for years because I got a peaceful night's sleep. When you do not sleep well you are not resting your body as you should. The only reason I do not take now is because being a Medicare patient the co-pay is high and it drives my drug cost into the area where I have to pay all of my cost of my drugs for a period of time before it pays again. I am also on some other expensive meds that I cannot do without. Try a lower dosage about 45 minutes before bed time with a small snack to see if this helps. Instead of being tired when you have had sufficient sleep you will have more energy. I certainly wish I could afford to take.

In the past, quinine, a drug used for treatment of malaria, was useful for RLS. but it has not been available by prescrition for some time. drinking tonic water, which contains quinine, before bedtime, may help. also, stretching your legs, especially calf muscles and taking a warm bath, in addition to drinking tonic water is a safe and sometimes effective approach. p.s for those who are worried about the sugar, tonic water is available in sugar-free form, though can be hard to find. hope this helps.

Question/Comment:

Hi there,

Has anyone out there any experience with Requip XL? My husband is taking 2mgs of it only once before going to bed. It causes drowsiness, sleep problems, lots of fatigue. So far I wish I could get any positive feedback for this new drug. It is a big enough dose for the whole day I suppose. And he started in the morning and was sleepy all day and tired, tired, tired. His doctor changed it to the night intake so that he can sleep at night and we are not sure why doesn't it work for that purpose.

I have been using Requip for well over a year and it seems like after a while you need more of it. They start you out low, my doctor let me up the amount as it started to not last till the next time I took it. I am now taking 8mgs and it seems to do the trick. I try to take it about an hour before bed. Sometimes I feel bad on it till I go to bed. A snack fixes that.

I have been taking, first requip then ropinerole, for several years now for my RLS. I started with 1 mg, then increased to 2mgs when 1 stopped working, then 3mgs, then 4 mgs, now 5 mgs and the doctor said to take 8mgs if I have breakthrough jerking in my legs, which I do have occasionally. I find, at most, the dosage only works for about six months before it needs to be increased. I am almost always drowsy, completely lethargic, and have difficulty with my memory at times. I was always active and worked in the legal profession prior to this. Now all I want to do is sleep. Hopefully something more lasting and with less side effects will come along soon.

I take requip for RLS aslo and have for a couple of years. I started out with Neurotin but it was ineffective after a few years. Now I take both at night. It should be taken an hour before bedtime. I also take Zoloft for depression. I find that if I am up and moving around I am fine but sitting down I get drowsy. I also take Protonix 2 times daily which takes care of the acid reflux. I have the night sweats but I am going through menopause. If you are experiencing the sweats you could be going through perimenopause. I went through that for several years and was on HRT for that. It helped but the Drs. do not want to give it to you if you are a smoker. My RLS still bothers me even with the extra meds and now I take Neurotin 3 times a day and it is helping more. As for the Zoloft, it is a lifesaver for me. I do not have any side effects except libido. You might want to ask the Dr. if you can split the meds during the day or just take at supper.

I am a 62 year old male with severe RLS. I have symptoms at all times of the day and night. I even experience the same feelings in my arms as well. I am on 2mg of Ropinirole which I take an hour before bedtime. My insurance company restricts me to the generic. I have also taken Requip and notice no significant difference between that and the generic. I just hope that more research is done to find the cause and possibly a cure for this annoying condition.

Member Answer/Reply:

HI,
I have been taking requip for many years for RLS associated with long term fibromyalgia/lyme disease. For a few years I only took 1mg, but after I started seeing a D.O. that specializes in sleep medicine, he told me that even though I was getting to sleep quicker w/o a lot of leg issues, he told me that if I was still having leg movements during the night as I slept that I was still not getting restorative sleep. He decided to increase the dosage and also take the dosages at separate times according to our sleep schedule ( my husband works until midnight so therefore I am usually up until he gets home and we go to bed. I found that if I try to go to bed earlier than when he arrives home that if I wake up, I have trouble getting back to sleep. I am currently taking 2mg at 6pm, another 2mg at 10:30pm and a final 2mg when we go to bed and that is working very well for me. The 1st dosage keeps the RLS from starting, the 2nd dose is to keep the level up in my system and the 3rd dose is to keep it working through the entire night. It has just been a matter of trial & error to arrive at the necessary dosage that works for me. Maybe speak w/your DR.about tailoring a plan to divide up when you take your requip and ask if a dosage increase might be helpful also. I hope this has given you some options to check into with you doctor.

My Dr. won't prescribe more than 1 mg. each night. Sometimes it won't work and I "sneak" an extra dose to get through the day. If I don't I have to stay busy and not sit down, no matter how tired I am.
