Question/Comment:
I was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees. I stated on celebrex, which is very expensive so I was given meloxicam. My concern is , I have a family history of stroke and heart disease and both medications have side effect of increasing both risks. Which one has higher risks??? I tried the celebrex and it helped but really can't afford it. Meloxicam is much cheaper.Does anyone have any experience or comments reguarding both medications. Thanks.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Both Meloxicam and Celebrex may increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Currently, there is not enough study data to determine if using one has more risk of heart problems or stroke over using the other. Since you have a family history of stroke and heart disease, it is worth following up with your doctor to talk about your concern and review your risk factors for heart disease and how this medication may affect your overall risk.

Answer/Reply:
I have been on meloxicam for over 2 years and have had no side effects. It is much cheaper than celebrex because it is an older drug. It works very well for my osteoarthritis and when I don't take it, I really notice a difference. All of the NSAID medications are high risk for stroke and bleeding and other serious complications. Before you decide to take this type of medication, it is important to weigh the risks vs. benefits. I was in enough pain that I was willing to risk taking the medication. I don't know which NSAIDS have higher risks but I also needed a medication that I could afford. I have been very pleased with mobic (meloxicam) and I hope it works as well for you. 52 year old female

Question/Comment:
I was prescribed Mobic for arthritis but was determined later not to have any arthritic profile. I stopped taking it and the pain and stiffness in my joints returned, the doctor told me to continue taking it if it helps. I have MS and just got news that I am HIV positive so I think I will discontinue taking Mobic now, I don't need to complicate my health by adding the potential effects this medication may cause. There are a lot of alternative treatments I can experiment with since I don't currently actually have any form of arthritis. Thank God.

Question/Comment:
I've been taking 7.5 mg of Mobic twice a day for nearly 3 months. It seems to affect some pain issues, like tendon problems in my right foot, but doesen't control all over joint pain that I experience during 'episodes'.
The only other drug I currently take is Fioricet for head pain. I'm very sensitive to meds, so on the days I'm taking that drug, I skip the Mobic. Last weekend was one of those times that I was off the Mobic and ever since, I've been having more pain than usual. Every joint is aching, even areas I've never injured. Most pronounced area is in my hips.
I'm wondering if my body is that reliant on Mobic now that I've become that sensitive to going off it for short periods of time. It works well for me, taking care of daily chronic pain I experience. So even though I wonder at times if it's the right drug for me, it is still more effective than anything else I've been prescribed. It's just rather odd how my body seems to react when I skip some doses. I'm seeing a Rheumatologist soon so hopefully these questions will be answered for me.

Answer/Reply:
I have been taking 15 mg Mobic for almost a year. It has worked wonders in making my everyday pain more bearable. When I miss a dose I can bearly move. Getting out of bed in the morning without help would take twice as long. I used to take Celebrex, but I think the Mobic works better with much fewer side effects.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
I agree with you. It seems that as long as the dose is 7.5MG as mine and your's is, it does not affect the blood pressure or most anything else. In fact, my doctor lowered my BP meds when my BP got too low. Now considering I was taking Avalide which has a water pill affect and demadex plus a Beta blocker(Toperal) I really haven't had any problems. Sounds to me as though they were just on too high a doseage.

Answer/Reply:
I am also on Metoprolol and I find it alarming that Meloxicam can counteract the meloxicam. i have high blood pressure, a hidstory of chest pain. The last time I went to my doctor i saw another doctor in his office who increased my Meloxicam to 15 mg tablets and told me to stop taking my Metoprolol as far as he was concerned. I have had three incidents that I believe were mild heart attacks. I switched doctors because of this, the one I had before didn't seem to know what he was prescribing me and had an "the emergency room will fix any mistakes iImake" attitude. I'm going to print this out and take it to him.

Question/Comment:
I started meloxicam 15 mg for back and neck problems. on my 3rd dose i experienced severe abdominal pain for 4 hours. as soon as the pain stopped, i had an "episode". I suddenly broke out into a full body sweat, became dizzy and disoriented. I started gasping for breath, then got the cold chills. My hands and feet went numb and i started shaking/jerking uncontrollably. this went on for about 30 minutes. the next day i was still dizzy and fatigued and kept going numb in my left hand.

Question/Comment:
I've been taking Mobic for about 6 months. I previously took Vioxx which ultimately gave me stomach problems. After the recall I was afraid to take anything but I have arthritis several places and decided to ask the Dr. to recomend something. Mobic was it and I can do a lot of things with much less pain. I still worry about my stomach inflamation but I never take it on an empty stomach. So far so good.

Mobic is on the $4/$8/$10 list at Kroger and Wal-Mart, which should help. I have bad reflux because of the Mobic, but it works for me. Check with your specialist to see other low-cost options.

Answer/Reply:
I have had back pain for 40 years due to buldging disk but just lived with it using my tens unit, then this summer I started having problems not being able to lift my right leg, meaning if I went up steps I had to use my hands to lift my leg up and same thing when I went to bed, had to actually lift my leg on the bed. I knew I had osteo arthritis in my back, but with new blood work I found I also had reumitoid arthritis also, the doctor put me on 7.5 MG of Mobic twice a day and wow the difference it made, before if I sat for just a few minutes, it took me forever to get up and hold on something to walk. Now no problems at all with walking or using my right leg. The downside is I have an ulcer so I take prilosec and eat before I take the mobic, I on ocassion still have problems with my ulcer but very rare. Now after reading about Mobic I am concerned about heart problems. If it's not one thing it's another lol

I had that same problem with meloxicam when I was first put on it. My doctor lowered the dose and I've never felt better! Check with your doctor to see if the dosage may be the culprit.

Answer/Reply:
I just started on Mobic 7.5 myself besides nausea myself, I get terrible headaches and I take topamax also for migraines, so I dont think it's just you, I think it's the mobic, which I've talked to my Primary about and I'm going to stop taking it, I'd rather take Motrin or something then taking this drug that tends to make my head throb and makes me so sick to my stomach that I have to take nausea medication also. So it's not just you.......It has left me with awful headaches...

Dear T.K.,
Meloxicam does have a general risk rating of Orange (4). For further information on iGuard's risk ratings and what they mean, please go to http://iguard.org/help/system/
Please be sure to add Meloxicam in to your wife's iGuard profile so it can be checked for drug-drug and drug-condition interactions.

Question/Comment:
I was originally taking Vioxx for my Arthritis. I loved it, as it increased the quality of my life 100%.
Then Vioxx was shown to cause problems, and the doctor switched me to Celebrex. I was skeptical. But Celebrex worked almost as well as Vioxx. Then Celebrex was shown to cause problems and my doctor switched me to Mobic (generic Meloxicam). I don't feel that Mobic works as well. I have more pain, and sometimes take 1/2 a pain pill as well as the 7.5 Mobic pill.
But my family has a history of heart problems. So I will stick with Mobic because I am afraid to go back to Vioxx.

Question/Comment:
Mobic helps me but when I talked to my pharmacist when I changed blood pressure medications, I told him I was getting headaches and taking Advil for them. He told me to stop immediately because I was taking the Mobic and take Tylenol. You should not take Advil with Mobic.

Answer/Reply:
I got this same advice from my doctor. I was taking Advil for irregular muscle pain after my exercise classes or the occasional headache. She said take Tylenol, which does not work as well for me, but I wish she had told me about the Advil sooner. I take the Meloxicam for chronic foot pain, and it does seem to help.

I have recently been prescribed to the cocktail of 15 mg of Mobic along with 10 mg of Prednisone and the stiffness and pain I have endured these past 3 years have all but disappeared. I can actually walk and run now, go down on my knees without pain and and my hands and fingers are pain free and I have more range with movement.. and that goes for my neck as well! I am also taking 2200mg of pure fish oil from Pharmax.

I take 15mg of this once a day, usually after breakfast. When I started taking this I found I was having some edema problems but stuck with it in hopes that my body would adjust to it and it did. Other than that I have had no problems. I was on Celebrex for years with no problems and very happy with how well it helped me but when I changed insurance they charged $75.00 where
I had been paying $15.00. I could not afford that so that is why I'm taking Mobic. I don't feel like it does as good as the Celebrex did.
