Question/Comment:
Be patient when first beginning - it took me a couple of months before I noticed any effects.

Question/Comment:
I have been on Zoloft for years and it occassionally quits working and they take me off for a few weeks and try it again so far it is the only thing that has worked for me, but does have sexual side effects and causes insomnia. I have PTSD and another stress syndrome, anxiety, all sortd of emotional stuff it helps still. Still snappy at times but if I couldn't feel anything then I wold be over medicated.

Question/Comment:
i saw something in the vitamin aisle that caught my eye; it was suggested to take it with antidepressants, zoloft being one of them. i dunno if it's some gimmick or vitamin hype, but the "Rx Essentials" claim that 'when taking certain medications, you may be lacking important nutrients...' and lists some possible effects. is there any reason to believe this?
i take a normal one-a-day women's and calcium/iron supplements. would taking zoloft affect my vitamin absorption that i would need to take care of that?

These comments are an unregulated attempt to market supplements, not improve our health.
ALWAYS take them for what they are - a commercial to induce you to buy.
Take only those supplements your lab work indicates are appropriate for you, not what some snake oil merchant hypes as something you must need since you are on <fill in the blank>.

Answer/Reply:
i would not suggest stopping your medication. you may not even feel it's effects at first (that's a problem with drugs that take awhile in your system)... but you will get very depressed or you might get down and stay that way... for a long time. talk to you doctor, of course, to see if some other medicine is better for you, like lexapro or something.
he'll probably suggest weening yourself off of it (like you probably did when you started)... taking smaller doses in weekly increments, while starting up a new med. for example 200 for a week, then 100mg for a week down to 50mg, etc. but either way he/she may suggest you still take zoloft but then also give you something else (like wellbutrin, under careful supervision)

Answer/Reply:
Quite the opposite, it sounds to me like you need to have a frank talk with your MD about INCREASING your dosage. Only your MD can make that call, but I think you should discuss this in detail. Lay out exactly what is happening. Never, ever lie to your doctor (or the cook). Either one can leave you with something on your plate you really don't want.
My MD worked with me every three months until we settled on 100mg daily. We tried as little as 50mg and as much as 200mg. 100mg was right for me. Alas, trial and error was the way to make the call.
Not sure why you want to stop taking it when you are still depressed. Do you LIKE being depressed?
At the right dosage, it is a Godsend. At the wrong dosage...well you already know that one. Once you settle on the right dose, you WILL feel different in a good way.
I'm on zoloft for PTSD (Iraq veteran). It does work for me, but it took some effort to get the dosage right.

I also take Zolft. I was told by my Dr. I would probably have to take medication for depression for the rest of my life. If you have a chemical imbalance like I do you may not ever go off of it. If I can take a pill a day and feel good, so be it.

Question/Comment:
I was put on Zoloft after my third child was born. Since then I have gained alot of weight and I have been keeping everything I do the same though!!!! They have up my prescription to Zoloft many times...now I am currently at 200 mg.....I still feel like it is not working!!! What should I do??? My mother is on Prozac and she said that it is much better for her than zoloft.....is that true that Prozac is much better???

Answer/Reply:
It's totally individual. Prozac may be better for your mother, and perhaps, genetically, for you too. I was doing everything externally to be healthy and was crying and miserable. Through prayer and articles, I was led to being put on Zoloft and continued on it for 5 years. It worked great for me. I didn't associate it at all with weight gain, in fact, I was just put on it again, after being off it for 6 years and feel like its giving me more appetite control. I think it's totally based on each person's individual needs/chemistry.

Answer/Reply:
I have been on and off Zoloft numerous times, but 2 years ago I did find out the the dosage can be increased to 400mg a day. I know it sounds like a lot, but for a while help. I'm now at 150mg and am trying desperately to find a new/better med for me. I did start out with Prozac, which also worked for my in the beginning, but also stopped working. Every person is completely different, your mother might be doing better but that doesn't necessarily mean you will. The only real decision is up to you. If you want to try Prozac, do some research and compare the 2 meds. The ONLY true way to know if it works for YOU is to try it and see what happens.

Question/Comment:
I started taking the zoloft about a month ago and it has had agreat impact on me-as observed by all who know me and my ways. I'm more calmer and face reality without getting too anxious and erattic. I really look at things with a slower attitude and empathy instead of being snappy and hard to deal with.

Question/Comment:
While I know of others that have taken this med w/great success, when taking this medicaiton I became very manicy. I was totally unaware of this fact until my family had an intervention to point out how irratic I had become. Our reality is our reality regardless of whether it is really based on what is going on around us. Sometimes it takes trying more than one med to find the right one for you. Just be willing to listen to the input of those around you and consult your doctor if there are any concerns.

Answer/Reply:
Never give up. It is easy to give in to our depressed feelings, however meds are coming out all the time for depression and PTSD. The only bad part of all of this is finding the right med that works with you and for your body and type of depression. For example, Cymbalta works well for my mother.

Answer/Reply:
I'm sorry Zoloft did now work well for you. I started taking it 10 years ago when I had insomnia. My doctor told me my anxieties were keeping me awake. Within 3 weeks I was sleeping through the night again. Then I realized my PMS sysmptoms were almost gone. I didn't feel anxious and yell at my husband & kids like I had before.
I do think it contributed to my weight gain though.
