Question/Comment:

I have gained so much weight on lexapro and zoloft...it's depressing me and isn't it suppose to do the opposite? I take 200mg of Zoloft..does anyone know of a different drug without that side effect?

43 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have never heard of anyone taking that much Zoloft! 200 mg??? I have been taking 50 mg for years along with Wellibutron and they work well for me, I have tried lots of anti-depressants. I have depression disorder and panic attacks, also take Valium 5 mg twice a day. They added Lyrica 150 mg twice a day for Fibro and it has helped with the pain some, I can tell a diference if I don't take it. My daughter took Zoloft when she was a teen-ager and it made her shakey, she has been taking Lexapro with Klonapin now for a few months and it seems to be working well for her she is 22 now and has anixety disorder and is bipolar. Maybe Zoloft is not good for younger people. Alot of her friends are taking Lexapro and doing well. I have gained weight in the last 10 years but who knows from what? Everytime I turn around it is something else and another drug.....

50 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am bipolar and have been on every medication you could possibly imagine. I have been on Lexapro and Zoloft. I have been on anything from Lithium to Depacote to Abilify. I have gained so much weight. I am extremely upset about it. It makes me more depressed and aggressive so I completely stopped taking my meds. I told my doctor I would rather be skinny and crazy then fat and sane. I know that may sound terrible but I just can't do it. If you find something that helps that doesn't cause weight gain. Let me know.

28 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I take anti-seizure meds, like Lamictal and Topamax, for bipolar disorder. They are not commonly associated with weight gain. Indeed, most people say they lose weight on Topamax, but the down side is, like a lot of people, I have had some short-term memory problems while on it.

Wellbutrin is an atypical antidepressant that helped me lose weight and increased my energy. For someone with unipolar depression, that might be just the ticket.

I have been taking Zoloft now for so many years that l can't remember. If there is one thing l know is that this drug works for me. It is a life saver and l swear by it. I one time in the past wanted to see if this drug really worked so l stopped taking it. After two weeks l turned into a monster. Besides being depressed all the time no one around me was able to talk to me because l was fighting with everyone. I went right back on it and in a matter of days l was back to the same old person. Hey l still argue but l no longer am depressed to the point l was when l was off zoloft. I would say l would rather die then live the way l did when l stopped taking Zoloft for the two weeks. Hey that does not mean everyone does good on zoloft. I take 100 mg. My brother takes 50mg and he at the age of 67 just stated taking it and has show a big change in him. For people who have bad reactions to it. My l suggesst you lower the amount of MG you take and then work your way up to where you should be. I have tried many others but zoloft works best for me. Don't give up on it till you try everything you can to get your body to adjust to it. For me it does work so don't be scared to use it.

Answer/Reply:

Why don't you ask your doctor if you can take Lyrica you probably can start with 50mgs and then work your way up to about 250 or the maximum which is 600mgs per day. It does help.

I'm 54 yrs now have been taking Zoloft for 12+ years. I'm on 100mg now and have vollied between 0- 100, during this time span no weight gain, If I'm on a low dose and I start getting anxiety or panic attacks I can increase the dose 25mg at a time. Start out slow. it is not over night thing. This might not be the drug for you. Be patient. it's the best I have found as far as sideaffects, etc. I can still be rational think and have normal emotions with out going overboard either way. Try with DR, help adjusting dose. Good luck!Kat

Question/Comment:

My 14 yr old daughter has recently been prescribed 25mg. sertraline for depression. I'm very concerned about the side effects of suicidal thoughts that could occur. Any parents out there that have children on this drug?

14 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I took Zoloft as a teen for depression and I did not have increased suicidal thoughts. For me it helped tremendously. I have used Zoloft off and on whenever I have issues with depression. I suffer from S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and every winter I suffer from depression. This started when I was your daughter's age. I have used Zoloft since then and for me it decreased my suicidal thoughts. The best piece of advice I can give, as someone who knows what it is like to be a depressed teenager, is to make sure she is getting counseling with the medication.

32 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I do not have children on this drug, but I am a of child of this drug(and many other ssris) since I was approx. 12-13years old. You are welcome to ask me any questions you'd like. I am currendtly a Psychiatric Technician at PDC and so is my mother, brother, 2 cousins, and my fiancee. Plus, my best friend just graduated the RN program and wants to continue school and specialize in mental illness. At the moment my best advice to you is that you should worry about her having a increase in energy without the decrease in suicidal thoughts because that can cause a depressed person to have the energy back to commit suicide. Just don't assume that she is better because she is up doing things. Focus on the things she talks about. If she starts giving things away or doesn't want to start anything new. Then don't trust her, and worry/close loving supervision. my e-mail is mandie_546@hotmail.com feel free to email me anytime. Good luck, take care.

My son started taking Zoloft at about 20 years of age for anxiety associated with his Asperger's Syndrome. It has worked very well but has caused him to be a little low in energy and have a lot of weight gain. I've spoken to others on this drug who had the same symptoms. Also, since your daughter is so young, you need to watch for any of the suicidal thoughts that they warn about on the package inserts. Overall, I think it has been good for my son, but I'd like to switch him to something that is more appetite-neutral. So just watch for those side effects. Good luck!

I have been taking Sertraline now everyday for over 10 or more years. Even though l take a much higer dosage l would not want to see what l would look like if l stopped. This is a wonderful drug that has been a life saver for all these years. You will see a big change in your daughter once she has been on it for a while. Do not think this will work in a matter of days. It will take a couple of weeks not only to change but also to make sure she is taking the correct MG. Good Luck Stu Fl

My niece was on zoloft at 16 and she had suicidal thoughts.. her dad took her off of them right away.. I've been on zoloft for 12 years but then again, i'm an adult.. I don't think zoloft is good for teens.. I also know a 20 year old who was on zoloft and committed suicide.. if your daughter has any kind of suicidal thoughts.. TAKE HER OFF OF IT!

44 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Yes - my daughter was first prescribed Prozac at the age of 15 - Same warnings on that - I was worried about it too. After being on it for almost 3 years, it didn't work for her anymore. They switched her to Zoloft - 100mg. I am concerned that this is too high a dosage for her.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Zoloft for 7 months. I am currently unemployed. There are days when I don't get dressed.I could sit a stare at nothing for hours. I have to force myself to do anything. I am not suicidal. I just have no energy. Is this a side effect or does my Dr. need to increase my dose. I am taking 50mg daily.

55 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I was recently laid off and go through the same thing. I am not sure if it is the drug or just depression from being unemployed. I found that I do better if I go out for a ride or something. I went through this back in 2001-2002 also. I started taking anti depressants mainly to help with anxiety and pain after post traumatic stress in 1986. I have been on many different ones. I have been on Zoloft now for years. It seems to work best for me. I only take a low dose of 25 mg. If I take more I have trouble focusing on things and feel no emotion at all. My doctors keep insisting I should take a higher dose, that even 50 mg. is a low dose. I was recently told by my doctor that maybe I should take another drug in combination with the zoloft. I would rather try and do without any. I was thinking about trying to go off it and see how I do but am afraid after reading things about Zoloft withdrawal.

Answer/Reply:

I have been on Zoloft for 6 years. I have never felt like I didn't want to get dressed or just set idle for periods of time-maybe you aren't or the right medicine. The only problem I have encoutnered is when I thought maybe I didn't need zoloft-i have tried to go without it for two weeks and it wasn't a good idea for me-I cried easily and I got irrated very easily-good luck-I personally think Zoloft is a miracle medicine.

46 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

This is not a side effect of Zoloft. I am certainly not a Dr., but it sounds more like you need a different med. I suppose your dr. may try increasing your dose, but I can't see how that would help. Also, you may benefit by seeing a practitioner to help work though the feelings you have about being unemployed. It's my guess that that's at the root of your lack of energy and depressed state. Good luck!

36 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I started taking Zoloft for postpartem depression a year ago. I started on 50mg and had to be bumped up to 100mg. I still have no energy and I gained 25lbs. The zoloft helped with my irritability and nervousness which is great, but now I have no energy either. I think I'm depressed now because of the weight gain. I see a psychiatrist which is great to have someone listen and not judge you. I think it's time for me to be weaned off Zoloft. Maybe you should talk to a psychiatrist. They now more about this than a family doctor.

29 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I've been taking Zoloft off and on for about 11 or 12 yrs. Last year I had some major issues and felt like it wasn't working anymore. My dr. switched me to Lexapro. I was feeling much better, but then I hit a wall and felt like I was back at square one. I know it takes awhile for the meds to work, but 7 months seems a little long for you not to be feeling better. It's all about the right meds. Everyone is different. My advice would be to talk to your dr and see if you can be upped to 100mg. If that doesn't do the trick, you'll need to talk to the dr about a different med. Depression really sucks, especially if you are taking meds and it doesn't work...I've been there! Try not to get too discouraged...it never occured to me for many years that I might have been taking the wrong medication. When I switched my dr and I realized I was on the right one all along and I went back to the Zoloft. As long as I take at least 100mg a day, it seems to work pretty well. Good luck and I hope you aren't feeling better soon.

Answer/Reply:

I was on zoloft for 3 plus years. I recently weaned myself off and I am amazed at the energy I have again. I was an avid runner,an RN working for 2 hospitals when my best friend was murdered. I could not work without crying, so my PCP prescribe zoloft.
It helped me get past my friends death, but I didnt need to continue taking it. I still see a therapist who was supportive in my efforts to stop the medicine. I am a 46 year old female, who spent 3 years being numbed by this drug.
I was charge nurse for a psych hospital for 7 years, I knew alot about this medication but I didnt know I was so flat until stopping it.
I feel alive again and realize zoloft was keeping me from experiencing life. There are many altenatives available...ask your doctor.

James, if your Doctor has you on these medicines, I have to assume your have a history of mental illness. It does not go away because you take your meds for awhile. Talk to him/her, I am sure they will tell you this is usually a life long process. I myself am on the same meds as you..I have just fully accepted this after 15 years.

I know for me, the doctor told me I will be on Zoloft and probably the Ativan I take as well for the rest of my life. I stopped taking the Zoloft for about a year....big mistake! Some people just need it for the rest of their lives. I would definitely ask your doctor what he/she thinks, and you could always go to a pychiatrist for a better second opinion.

I went off years ago. 2004. I have 180 days worth, from 2004 as I was afraid of that rainy day.. I started those and they are just fine. Could they be ineffective and I am enjoying a placebo effect?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

You can check on the prescription bottle for the expiration date of the medication. Prescriptions dispensed from the pharmacy are typically given an expiration date of 1 year after dispensing. If medication is used beyond the expiration date on the label, the potency and stability of the medication cannot be guaranteed.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Well the date is 2004. They seem just fine.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Sertraline, the generic for Zoloft, is available at many pharmacies for a lower price. Also, there are some major pharmacy chains that are offering a 30-day supply of generics for around $4 or a 90-day supply for $10. If sertaline (Zoloft) is not part of these programs available in your area, you may want to talk to your doctor about other antidepressants such as fluoxetine (Prozac) or paroxetine (Paxil) which may be included in some of the programs.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Contact the mfr. you might qualify for their reduced/free programl.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Its not best to used expired pill as they lose the effect of them over time. Also you dont have to get zoloft you can get the generic and is the same thing. I get a 90 day supply at kmart for $15 and it may be cheaper at other stores, you just have to call around and check. Hope this helps

Answer/Reply:

K-mart offers generic Zoloft (Sertraline HCl) for $15 for a 90 supply. Any dosage.

26 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Zoloft is made by Pfizer. Get intouch with Pfizer and they might be able to give your meds for free. You can look them up on the net. I take alot of meds and the only one I pay for is my metfosmen ($4 - 30days @ Wal*Mart). Also ask your Dr. about "Patient Assistant Programs." They're are also some "free prescription discount cards" that I have gotten from the net and they do get you discounts on scripts. Even if it's just a couple of dollars off it's, better then nothing. Here's a few - LUSCINIA HEALTH (SIMPLE SAVING CARD)866/368-9807, PFIZER PFRIENDS 866-706-2400, SUN Patient Card 866-662-1351,Together RX Access Prescription Savings Program 800-444-4106. Also if you go to a health center that has a social worker intheir office they will help with your meds and how to get them free or discounted. And always ask for samples. I hope my advices help you.

60 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

i dont know about the placebo effect but i do know about the expense. i've been getting the generic at Walmart. my dosage is 200mg per day and costs me $10 for a months supply.

45 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

i, too, take zoloft and also have budget issues. but some time ago the generic sertraline was substituted and has worked equally well for me (and many pharmacies - walgreen's, target, etc. - have great generic prices, like $4/month's supply).

52 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Check into your community health department. They may be able to provide you with free or discounted prescriptions. My community has what is known as a sliding scale fee, which they base your Dr. visit fee on your income. Another suggestion is to ask your Dr. to prescribe a higher dose (say 100mg, if you are taking 50 mg. a day) and take 1/2 a pill a day. This will double your prescription, for the same price. I am not sure where you are located but Rite Aid offers a free discounted prescription card. Just ask the phamacist for one. You can also ask your Dr. if he/she has any free samples you may take home. Just be honest with your Dr. They realize we are all going through hard times & usually are more than willing to do all they can to help you get your necessary meds.

Question/Comment:

I've been taking Zoloft for 4 years, I've been asked several times if I want to stop taking it, but I am honestly scared to stop taking it because I don't want to risk feeling the way I used to ever again. Any words of wisdom?

20 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I've been on Zolofft for over a decade. It works really well for me. I went on "holiday" once on the advice of a psychologist and it really stank! I went straight down into depression and became suicidal. If you go off your medication have someone that you know well observe you and tell you what they see and observe in you-- and only go off under a psychiatrist's or doctor's supervision. For me, it's not worth feeling like I felt when I went off. I'm more naturally "me" while on zoloft and it doesn't take me half the energy to function as it does when I'm off it. For me, it wasn't worth the stress and the pain I put my husband in when I went off. I'd say if you're afraid to go off -- trust yourself and don't go off it. I'm a "lifer" on zoloft and I'm okay with that. I live in a "natural remedy" type of hippie town and get the question about going off all the time. I brush such comments off because they haven't been where I've been- down in the black hole- without it. If I had a broken leg nobody would tell me to hop around without crutches. Or if I was a diabetic, nobody would tell me to just go off insulin and see how well I did. I say trust your inner voice and if you are scared to go off it--don't.

Answer/Reply:

A good rule of thumb with Zoloft is you really have to wean yourself off it.If you just stop it totally your system does not seem to understand what is going on.I have been on Zoloft for years and when I decided I wanted to get off it..as per my doctor I had to wean off it slowly.I guess it is like some medicines that take a few days to get into your system..some also take time to get out and you can't just stop them and not expect any reactions.

60 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Hi...
I'm just another patient on Zoloft, but I was told by a psychologist (when I went off of it for a while) that I will probably have to be on it for the rest of my life due to the anxiety attacks I was having. I asked him if that was healthy and he said it shouldn't have any health risks. I have been on it for almost 8 years now!

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking sertraline for maybe ten years, did wean myself off once, but all my symptoms returned. It has been a miracle for me, having taken antidepressants since 1960 with this the onlything that ever worked. After taking it for four years you probably think it is losing effect, but if you stop you may find out you just forgot how bad you felt. Also, if you DO decide to go off of it, do it very slowly, ask your doctor. When I did it I dropped 26 mg a month and made it through without too many bad symptoms but quick quitting can be a horror. If it were me I would just keep taking it if its helping. btw I am 60 years old and finally for the last ten years have felt "normal" because of the sertraline.

I am a 36 year old female and have been taking zoloft for 6 years when I was diagnosed with MS. I have tried to go off my zoloft and I become extremely irritable and I can't even stand myself. You should do what your Dr tells you but if you do have a great concern about being on a med so long why don't you talk to your doctor about reducing the dose and see how you feel. I went down to 25 mg and it still seemed to help but I currently take 50 mg. If you do decide to quit taking them you always need to discuss with Dr before you do so they can reduce you as they need to.

37 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I was finally diagnosed in the mid 80s at age 32 with chronic Dysthymia and generalized anxiety disorder. Prozac changed my life until it gradually "pooped out" after several years. I then began taking Celexa for about 5 years until it too, lost its punch. I've been taking Zoloft ever since and it has been, by far, the best med for me.

I agree 100% with the other respondent (37 yr old female) who encourages you to listen to your inner voice. Who is asking if you want to stop taking it? Family? Friends? Those who have not experienced the horrors of the "black hole" cannot relate to it and are in no position to influence you with respect to something they know nothing about.
Without medication, I've often compared myself to a flower that lives in a wilted state. The med perks up my petals. It takes the heavy weight off my back so that I can live a more joyful existence the way I was always meant to. I've occasionally missed a day of taking it and by late afternoon can tell a difference - subtle but am definitely off a bit.

I don't think you should ever stop cold turkey. You'll most likely need to ease off gradually under your doctor's supervision if that is the way you decide to go. But for many of us, antidepressants have been a life saver. Hang in there.

I've been on Zoloft since 1996 and I don't think I'll ever stop. I do feel that I may have to have my dosage increased though, as I'm getting tired from the depression and would like to overcome that symptom better.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have been on Zoloft since our youngest son was 3, he is 19 now, will be 20 in August.

I have wrestled with these exact questions more than once in my lifetime. Being a fundamentalist, (although, we did put the "fun" in it, we are a rather progressive sect), I have been in consult with the Creator of the Universe on more than one occasion, that is to say I have prayed and wept more than once trying to justify the use of this, or any drug.

The answer was made abundatly clear to me when one evening, after a relaxing day at a local lake with a friend and her children and myself and mine, I began to experience mind numbing pain in my left ear. I have had my eardrum burst on more than one occasion, so I was fairly certain this was a repeat of that again and we went to the ER.

As per usual, anytime you go to the ER, you must give them a history and they do a physical, so in the course of that she asked me for my meds list, which I gave her, all while my ear was still screaming, my poor husband trying to tell them no morphine or demoral please when she looked at me above her glasses and said,

"Oh! You have a problem with your NERVES"

It was at that moment that I realized I am who I am, and the place I go when I do not take that little bit of chemical to regulate a very important chemical in my body is a no joke sad place that barring nuclear war I will never go again.

There are people everywhere that will never come back from that place. For all of those people, I have a responsibility to live another day and for myself I have the responsibility to strive with God's help to be as happy and productive as possible.

I answered her by saying,

"No mam, I do not. If I touch a burner and it is on, my hand sends a signal to my brain, and I move my hands. My nerves are fine. I have a problem with the way my brain handles a chemical called Seritonin. Acutually, I have lapses in my snapses. It's really pretty amamzing. Please do not give me any pain medicine until I see a doctor."

Needless to say, the nurse went away, my eardrum burst, I have never had trouble explaining why I need Zoloft, and I will never again apologize to myself or any member of my family for needing to take it.

If it were insulin? if it were premarin? if it were thyrozine? if it were lasix?

Take your meds, live your life! Pray about it! I'll bet you reach the same conclusion!

Answer/Reply:

I have been on and off for 15 years. I was without for 4 days and my husband wanted to divorce me. I could tell the difference in my disposition and I didn't like it. I try to stay to myself. It is unwise to stop if you do not have Dr. support or a support group to help you through the rough patches. I can't stand myself without my Zoloft and I don't expect other people to either. If you don't thiink you can trust your reactions off the medicine, don't stop. I tried weaning off it a while back and decided it was not worth it for me. Good Luck.

It's great that your 2 meds are working together so well. If I were you, I would ask my Dr. about the new diet you want to try. Question/Comment:

I initially went to see my doctor because I suddenly had a problem controlling my temper. I was surprised to find out that I am sufferring from depression. Sertraline works great! Haven't had an unprovoked angry outburst since. And my OCD about cleanliness and organization has subsided. However, I started having night sweats, so he gave me klonopin along with the sertraline.

I've been on the klonopin sertraline combination for a little more than 6 months now. My problem now is that my libido is nonexistant. I just have no interest whatsoever. It bothers me and, of course, my other half. Anyone else have the same problem and any suggestions?

29 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Absolutely. I have been on zoloft for 3 years and have no sexual desire at all. My boyfriend is very discontent, but it's just what I have to do right now!

Question/Comment:

I have been on 50mg Zoloft & Klonopin (depression/anxiety/ptsd) for over a year now and it worked wonderful for the first few months, but now I seem to be "slipping" back into my depression. Has anyone else had their meds "lose" their effectiveness? Should I ask my Dr to up my dosage?

32 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

This also happened to me. My dr. started me on 50 mg of Zoloft, but within 6 months my depression came back. He upped my med to 100 mg at bedtime and this worked great for about a year. Again, the effectiveness wore off. I've been taking 150 mg. for about 6 years now and it still works. I guess everyone just has that point where their liver doesn't absorb drugs so much to a point where they need to keep raising the dosage of their medicine.

47 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I was also on the same amount as you 50mg and the same thing happened to me. I went to the dr and they upped my doasge to 100mg. I noticed after a couple of days that i was becoming more compulsive. I had to do this or that or i would become depressed. I went back to the dr they took me back to 50 mg. The dosage increse didnt work well for me.

Answer/Reply:

I was on 50mg Zoloft and .25mg of Klonopin for almost 2 years. I started noticing that I was eating a lot when I got down. I have increased the level of Zoloft to 150mg and am almost off the Klonopin. I still carry it with me in case I have a panic attack when I am not home. I was very reluctant to increase the Zoloft, but after a few days, I am definitely feeling better and stopped eating as much! Good luck.

41 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have been on Zoloft for years. I started out on 50 mg and, when my stress level at work increased and it seemed that the Zoloft wasn't working as well, I asked my doctor to up the dose and explained why. Now I take 100 mg and it works for me. I would ask your doctor about it and explain why you think you need to increase the dosage - what are your symptoms/feelings regarding your depression and how have they increased and what amount of time.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I went on Zoloft 11 years ago after my son passed away. I started on a low dose and it worked for a short time but then my husband started having some very serious health and mental issues. I was working full time at a very stressfull job and never knowing what I was coming home to. My dose was upped to 100 mg at least once a day and a second dose at nite if needed. Four months ago I found out I had Stage 11 breast cancer and had a double mastectomy 2 weeks ago. I expected to be dealing with even more depression and a lot of anxiety. Yes, I did have a lot of anxiety but I dealt well with the depression. I am now told I am cancer free and life is good again. Don't think I would have survived had I not been on Zoloft.

I have been on Zoloft for years 200mg. I took it in the morning and by midafternoon, I'd be sleeping. I was told by one of my doctors to take it at bedtime and it will help you sleep. I've been taking it at bedtime for quite a few months now and he was right. It helps me sleep and I have sleep apnea, so you know it works for me for the most part. There are times it doesn't work, but all in all, it works better this way than taking it in the morning. Maybe this will help you as well

I, too have taken generic Zoloft (100 mg) for several years. While it doesn't make me sleepy, it does make me nauseous if I take it in the daytime. So, I take it right before going to bed and I don't have nausea. My doctor still stated he wanted me to take it in the morning, but I refused due to the nausea. He finally came around, but only after bugging me about it for over 6 months.

I have just started Zoloft at 25 mg per day (3 doses so far) for PTSD. I have had insomnia problems in past but was doing well bf starting Zolof. Have had two nights of insomnia and feel generally unwell (have had to take Ambien to sleep) with headache, tireness. Did anyone find that the side effects of Zoloft decrease with time if I hang it there? I can't last too long feeling like this.

Answer/Reply:

Yes, definitely hang in there! I am on Zoloft for OCD/anxiety. I too had sleep issues before and after Zoloft. My doctor added a very low dose of trazadone at bedtime. It helped tremendously, and I was eventually able to wean off of it completely. I have no sleep issues at all now. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I've been taking sertraline with budeprion for several years. Just recently I reduced the dosage and it's working okay. But my libido has definitely suffered. I bough a herbal extract formula called women's passion booster (includes maca root extract, ashwagandha root extract, ginkgo biloba extract, rhodocia rosea root extract, etc.). I've taken a few with no apparent effects, but am wondering if I should continue? Are there any risks taking this, along with my depression medication and estradiol-noreth (mainly for the hot flashes) I'm 52.

Thank you.

I am a 61 year old female and I take 250mg each morning of Zoloft. It has seemed to stop working. I went to the Dr last Tuesday Dec 23 and he put me on Abilify also..which has caused me not to sleep good and have a headache daily. I called today and they want me to up my dosage to 300mg of zoloft. My Internist and thearpist said that 200 was just about the maximum for zoloft. I don't know anyone who takes that many mg and I don't know whether I should do it or not.

Was taking Paxil and while it worked well, I gained 90 pounds in a very short time after starting it. Although I was told that it would be unusual to gain that much weight, when I switched to the Zoloft the weight came off and I find that it works just as well for me as the Paxil. Going off the Paxil was really difficult, but the Zoloft has worked out great.

My niece was in an alcohol treatment facility not so very long ago. She finished her treatment, clean and sober, but not allowed to graduate (not given her diploma) from the treatment program. She too was on zoloft for depression. They random tested her a couple of times, and she came up positive for Bengos and was told this. She tried to explain she was clean, and her drug of choice was alcohol. Because she finished and didn't have a diplomia, she was violated and sent to jail. Her attorney did her homework and researched this and happily she is out of jail because of this! BE VERY CAREFUL OF ZOLOFT! If you go into treatment, make sure the staff knows you are on Zoloft.

Answer/Reply:

Your niece is lying.......if she tested positive for BENZO's.....that would be xanax, valium, klonipin, etc......Zoloft is a SSRI that does not show up on a Urine analysis. She had one hell of an attorney and is very lucky

But, you are correct in saying be careful of zoloft.....there are a number of side effects, some of which really suck, and benzo's are perscribed to offset the side effects

Well, I'm not a lawyer nor am I a pharmacist.
But I DO think I'd be practicing some CYA here.
It might not hurt to:
1. take your prescription bottle and show it's label to the person who UAs you.
2. Or get copies of your Dr.'s office notes pertaining to him prescribing Zoloft to you.
3. Or you could ALSO get your Dr. to write you a note saying that you are a patient of his and he DID prescribe you the Zoloft.
4.Or/and get a copy of your prescription you turned in at the pharmacy. Again, your Dr. will have a copy of it in his file.

The burden of proof is on YOU, dear.
Good luck

I have been taking Zoloft since early 2008 and at the moment am not able to afford it. But since I've been off of it, I've noticed not only has my depression and anxiety returned almost full force, but I've been really really tired. I'm a stay at home mom so this is not a good thing at all. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to temporarily counteract this until I get my insurance back or can afford to get them again? It's helped me so much already that I really don't want to go back to how I was before and it seems to be worse actually because I just had a baby and because I was on it, I didn't go through post-pardum depression and I have this nagging feeling that it's all of a sudden coming on also... is that normal? Please help..

I am a 60 yr old female and have taken Zoloft for approx 15years. A couple of times I have been in the situation of not being able to afford it and found that the manufacturer was able to provide 90 day supplys after determining my income was low. There is also an ad on tv for a bus which will help provide rx. PPA 4rx or something like it. I have had to stop a couple of times and found my life spirals out of control, and have let my dr know that I would rather not live like that. I have had to increase levels a few times, from initial 50 to 200 daily which is holding for now. Good luck.

Question/Comment:

I've been taking Zolft(generic brand) for about a year now and I have noticed that I sweat/get very warm and was wondering if the Zoloft was the reason. I am 32, so I'm pretty sure it's not menopause. I'm wondering if this is a side effect of Zoloft or if anyone else has experienced this from taking Zoloft. I don't really want to switch depression meds because it seems to work wonders, I have been on wellburin and a few others that didn't seem to be working. If anyone knows anything about this, please respond. :-)

32 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Yes, I have noticed the same. I had an allergic reaction to amoxycillin last December and got dehydrated with sickness and diahorrea - I was admitted to hospital and they did not have my meds. The first two days were not so bad but after three days I felt so dizzy and headachy, sweating in the morning and felt awful. I have been weaning myself off for quite a while now, I was on 150mg and now down to 25mg. My psych said only do a 25mg drop every three months as it takes the brain a long time to adjust. I stopped the last 25mg three days ago and feel dreadful today, I have asked my doc for the liquid so I can do the last 25mg much slower. Does anybody know the equivalent dose in liquid form?

Thanks.

Answer/Reply:

I dunno. I notice that a lot too, but it's always when I'm nervous or otherwise emotionally excitable. I'm fifteen... so I doubt it'd be anything like menopause for me, too! Last time was today, actually. I just got nervous about some things I was saying... At least it's not too bad.

I found this site by searching Google to find out why at 28 years old, I'm sweating ridiculously, can't sleep & have night sweats and I'm a healthy female. I see that many ppl on Zoloft are having the same issues, so I'm really thinking that's what it is. Even walking accross the street at lunch I start dripping with sweat like many of you have said. One thing I'd like to bring up, in case anyone knows why this is, but I just did a 23 day course of the HCG diet. HCG is a hormone produced by pregnant women, but when injected by non-pregnant ppl (even men), it causes your body to feed itself with your stored fat and thus, you lose huge amounts of weight very quickly-but you never starve. During and for a few weeks after the diet, I was NEVER hot, I slept like a baby and I felt amazing ALL the time. I stayed on Zoloft while on the HCG too. I just thought it was interesting that when taking a pregnancy hormone, all of the side effects of Zoloft disapeared.

I am on 50mg Sertraline and I have suffered night sweats as well. My legs sweat so much when I sleep. No matter how cold the room is, I wake in the middle of the night soaking my PJs in sweat. The doctor prescribed 0.50mg Klonopin in response. It has helped tremendously and helps me sleep better. Only other side effect is that I am tired throughout the day - and my libido still suffers greatly. I am thinking of taking natural libido enhancing supplements for women - or just plain ginkgo. I know that ginkgo is supposedly beneficial in conjunction with sertraline, but i'm not sure about other herbs.

I take both Zoloft and BuSpar (generic in both) and have also found that I get warm very easily which makes me feel anxious. I was always very cold natured prior to starting these meds but I've been on them since 1997 and they keep my panic/anxiety disorder under control so it is worth being uncomfortable sometimes. When I do something strenuous like mowing, I just take frequent cool down breaks.

I started taking Zoloft in jun 08 and started weening myself off of it in oct. I feel like i am losing it. Ia m very tired very very dizzy tingeling and numbing feeling all over. i wasn't sure if it was from the zoloft or not and I was so scared I went to the ER and they did blood work EKG and all kinds of test and could not find anything wrong, so I am asuming that, that is what its from. now I am debating wether to go back on it or not so I will stop feeling like this. five months on the tabs is a rather short time. I'd go back on. I took sertraline for post natal depression for 16 months and took about 2 months to come off. Did get side effects but sucessfully came off. Unfortunately wnt back on them today as I feel a bit wobbly again (actually feel fine now which is typical!) this time will probable bew short lived it's prodably just the boost at the end. I'm not worried about it but I would stay on them for a bit longer if I were you.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

You are suffering from withdrawl. My husband experienced the same thing, but aso had tremors. They never tell you about the addiction..

Answer/Reply:

Did you tell your Dr. you were stopping the medicine? Did you tell the ER Dr. that you were trying to ween yourself from the Zoloft?
There is a way to stop taking it. I have been taking Zoloft off and on for many years. I have never had any side effects. When you stop taking it you have to start taking 1/2 a day for a week, then 1/2 every other day for 2 weeks, then 3 times a week for 2 weeks so your system can get used to the medicine being gone. If you feel that bad and you think it is because of the Zoloft, you really should talk to your Dr. The medicine might be conflicting with another medicine. If you have completely stopped taking the medicine and you are still feeling like that then I doubt it is the meds.
Hope this helps some.

I did tell my doc that I was weenig myself off of it, but he still did not think that it was from the zoloft. I did stop completly. It had been about 3 or 4 days since I had one and I decided to go ahead and take another one because I could not stand to feel that way any longer, I was willing to try anything and a couple of hours later all my symptons went away, so I took another the next day, and still no symptons, so I am guessing that it was from stopping the zoloft. I went to the doc and he ask me why I went back on it if it wasnt working, and prescrbed me Lexapro I dont know you or anyone eles but that stuff is awful, the side effects dry mouth I am so tired all the time I feel like crap all the time. I am thinking about going back to zoloft I mean It did help some and no bad side effects as long as I was taking right except for some weight gain, i just want to feel good again. Response please.

Answer/Reply:

Are you on a low dosage right now? I am on the lowest dosage and sometimes I don't feel like it's doing enough, but just enough so that I don't always feel "blah" and angry and irritated etc.. I've been thinking about asking my doctor to put me on a higher dosage to see if it helps. One thing you have to keep in mind is that if it's working even a little bit, it's something to be thankful for. I agree with you about knowing when the medicine stops taking effect when you stop taking it. I'm unable to afford mine at the moment and I'm miserable. I'm not a professional or anything, but my suggestion would be to continue taking it and see if you could possibly get on a little higher dosage to see if that helps.

Answer/Reply:

I started taking Zoloft about 3 months ago. They started me on only 25mg a day and seemed to be helping alot with my anxiety, then they decided to up me to 50mg and eventually 100mg. I took the 50 for a couple of weeks and felt too out of it, not able to focus well, so went back down to the 25mg. I was having too many side effects though, like gaining 12lbs in 1 month, no sex drive, and just a general feeling of "nothingness" so decided to quit taking them. I did stop cold turkey I guess, I figured only being on 25mg was low enough to just stop......was I wrong !! It has only been 2wks and I feel horrible. I can not sleep at all and have never been so dizzy feeling.
Don't know what to do. I DO NOT want to go back on it, but need to know how long this awful withdrawl may last.
I have a Dr's appt for next week, but don't hold out much hope of them telling me anything too useful since they were so quick to put me on the Zoloft in the first place without warning me much about all the horrible side effects.
I am feeling a bit freaked out, if I knew when I might feel better, I think it would help me relax, just knowing there is an end in sight.
Any help ???

I have been on Zoloft since oct/nov 2004. I am taking my due to menopause which I swear by Zoloft because it saved my marriage. Everyone is started of on a low dose and is adjust based on what, how, etc you feel, act, etc to the doc. Also, there can be adjusts meant even years after taking it do to additional meds, getting older, body issues, etc. I have been on 100mg for about 2+ years. As far as every changing, i tried wellbutrin 450mg which made me very lathargic. Then went to lexapro...just ucky med...I had an allergic reaction and had to go to the hospital. I've tried (don't know exact number) various different hormones, strengths, patches, etc and nothing helped...just kept making things worse. Any new probs that may occur, my first thing will be to talk to my dr about upping the zoloft first before anything else.

Although occurring infrequently, changes in menstrual cycle/menstrual disorder is listed under the side effects section of the product labeling for both Zoloft and Neurontin. If the change in your menstrual cycle is concerning you, you should discuss it with your doctor.

I think it says in the literature that comes with my medicine that you are not to take ibuprofen with Zoloft.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

you cant take ultram with zoloft...there are drug interactions...dont know WHAT exactly it does, but it says on the info you shouldnt take them togather

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

You must have back pain...or lower leg pain! I, too, was on that same set of meds for back and leg pain. I never was "right" while on those meds together. I could have a period one week and 2 weeks later have another one. I finally got back on track after I stopped the neurotin and weened off ultram. I still grab the ibuprophen every now and then. I will say I thought I had Parkinson's while on that concoction.
