I was given the drug for the shooting nerve pain in my legs-- however I gained 10 lbs in less than a month and being a diabetic I try to keep my weight off-- so I took myself off the drug and went back to taking ADVIL for the pain. The pain in my back was somehow take care of by a new prescription the doctor gave me for Osteoarthritis which is prescription strenght Vitamin D. I still have the pains in my legs ever so often but no pain in my back.

Question/Comment:
I started out with 800mg of Gabapentin three times a day for a total dosage of 2400 mg per day. It made me quite drowsy for a few weeks, but lessened the pain in my lower back and the right side of my body from the lower back down through my foot. My main side effects from that dosage was dizziness and the feel that I was falling or leaning when I walked, sort of an imbalance. The 800mg didn't come in capsules so my doctor prescribed (2) 300mg capsules three times a day for a total dosage of 1800 mg per day, which relieved me of the imbalance but also allowed my pain levels to increase. I now take (2) 300 mg capsules four times a day for the 2400 mg daily that worked better for me and I don't have the side effects of the imbalance. I don't know if it was because the 800 weren't coated and provided a stronger effect or that my body has adjusted, but I can definitely tell when I miss a dose. I had back surgery May 2007 and just recently September 2008 had the screws removed from the previous surgery as I felt they were part of my ever increasing and continuous pain. I'd have to say, the benefits outweighed the risks with my use of the gabapentin.

I have been taking Gabapentin 100mg 3x a day for a couple of months and have not noticed any side effects other than a bit of drowsiness when I first started taking it. It has made things much better for me. I have problems with my back and it has helped so much that what ever risk it has to be worth it. I was a bit leary of taking it but its great.

Question/Comment:
78 yr. old woman
I have had trigeminal neuralgia since 1992. Various procedures -rzitotomy and Gamma Knife were done. The first caused many side effects and . The Gamma Knife was done 2-3 yrs. ago--- it took six months but slowly I was able to be comfortable taking only 300mg. neurontin three times a day. The pain that I had that the neurontin helps is more of a overall nerve problem -- heavy, tingling, and agravating from my eye to the lower lip. My eyelid droops slightly. Recently I suddenly had a reaccurance of the old "spike being driven into my face" during these episoldes I had to look for a place to be until it stopped. I had to increase my medication drastically for several days and then the episodes began to reduce and I could reduce my meds. the doctor said to avoid stress and consider another Gamma Knife if I began to have frequent episodes again. He did not want me to be taking more than 1800-2400 mg. pr day maximum

Answer/Reply:
The above sounds like what I would have posted about a year ago-- actually I did have another Gamma Knife and it was immediately successful. I dropped down to 900 mg. Gabepentin per day( down from 3600mg. per day) I am now up to 1200 mg. per day - all for general facial disturbance. Facial disturbances are tightness, heaviness, buzz like bee stings under lower lip and various spots in face and head on left side. I had recent dental work on that side ( although dentist tried to avoid disturbing that area) also a basal cell carcinoma near nasal on that side-- I wonder if this could have caused the new buzzing sensations. However I have never had any side affects from the gabepentin--- and doctor said I was ok even on the 3600mg. per day --- it also helps pain from sciatica and general aging. I have noticed memory problems in the past year or so---but so have my friends of this age who do not take gabapentin!!!

Answer/Reply:
Ear pain was reported by a few patients during clinical trials of gabapentin (Neurontin), but it is not a common side effect. In some people, side effects may be related to the amount of medication you take - and may improve if you reduce the dose or stop taking the medication. Please talk to your doctor about your concern with your ear pain and do not try to adjust or stop your gabapentin without talking to your doctor first. Suddenly stopping some medications may lead to more serious problems.

Question/Comment:
I am a 61 year old woman and have had three back surgeries with steel post and screws. I was in a car accident 36 years ago. The out come was a broken neck and lower back injury. I have suffered with pain for many of years. I have taken many of different perscription for pain. I have had lots of physical therapy and even went to Mayo Clinc for help. I was put on Gabapentin 600 mg twice a day after I was told that a 4th surgery might have to be done on my back. Another trip to physcial therapy and chiorpratilc care three times a week along with the meds and I have my life back. I do have insomnia but I didn't realize it might be from this medication. I've been on the meds for two years. I did try weaning myself off with the doctors guidance and couldn't get off of it. That concerns me! What is the long term results in taking this medication?

I am sorry to hear about all the problems you have had with your back, but i wanted to let you know that i have been taking Neurontin for 10 years and i have had no problems, except with any medication, you have to up the dose every once in awhile. The insomnia, for me at least, came on when my dose was raised the last time. It was to much for my body, and i had to adjust how i took it. Instead of taking it all at night, i started taking 1 during the day and that fixed the problem. So now i take 3 600mg at night, and 1 during the day. After being on the Neurontin for 2 years, you would have noticed any long term effects from taking it, as for the insomnia, just tweek how you take it.

Question/Comment:
I was recently prescribed Gabapentin 100mg 3xday along with Seroquel 100mg @ bedtime. I only took the two together one time and decided that was enough for me. I was completely useless the entire next day, I could barely function. I have two small children and felt that I wouldn't be able to care for them properly if I continued the meds. I called my Dr. and let her know that I did not want to take them anymore. She asked me to continue the Gabapentin alone and see if it had the same effect. I'm honestly scared to take it again now. I'm battling with depression and high anxiety at times, I need all the energy I can get. How long will it take to regain that positive energy again if I start this??

I am a 37 year old male, and I have taken Gabapentin for about 2 years. I could relate to your situation about the Seroquel, because I was once prescribed that medication, too. I decided the next day that I would NEVER take it again. The Gabapentin helps a lot with my anxiety and depression. I take 75mg of Effexor XR along with about 2400mg of Gabapentin. I would encourage you to try the Gabapentin by itself, as your doctor mentioned. It should not have the same effect that the Seroquel did. There are other issues with side effects from Gabapentin that you should be aware of though. With me, it often causes a tingling or numbing sensation around my forehead, and it also makes me tired. It works well to take at night as it promotes good sleep. Hope this helps a little.

Answer/Reply:
Although not a very common side effect, tingling is listed as a side effect in the product labeling for gapapentin (Neurotin). If you are still concerned about the tingling that you are experiencing, you should follow up with your doctor to make sure something more serious isn't going on.

I take Gabapentin for Bipolar Disorder; it helps to stabilize my mood, and I have been on 1800 mg per day for most of the past 9 months. I was doing well on it when in March an insurance change forced me to change psychiatrists. Suffice it to say that the new psych decided I should go off of all of the Gabapentin cold turkey. I started to have tingling in my head that, over the next two days, became an unbearable itching over my entire body. Concerned, I called the Dr. to find out if I was in withdrawal. He got mad, said it was impossible, and refused to discuss it further. I returned to my previous psychiatrist, the one who had put me on the Gabapentin in the first place, and was put back at the same dosage level. The itching stopped immediately. I am still taking it and have also discussed what happened with my primary MD. He, too, felt it was not withdrawal, but the removal of a drug that had also been covering up a symptom of an auto-immune problem. The tingling always starts up when I am due to take my next dose -- then it subsides once I do. My current concern is that my psych wants me to go off of the Gabapentin, in favor of a different drug combination. Has anyone had a similar experience or felt this way upon a dosage reduction of Gabapentin? I will be discussing the current situation soon with my primary MD, and the psych is already aware.

I have had to quit taking Gabapentin a few times during the 3 yrs I've been on it because of insurance problems and not being able to afford my prescription. I'm 34 yrs old and I'm taking Gabapentin for RLS and I have severe Carpell Tunnel Syndrome. Gabapentin has been a GOD sent by way of alleviating the pain in my legs and in my hands. I, too, had been told there was no side affects when you stop taking Gabapenatin. Although I have not experienced tingling in my head nor excessive itching per say, I have experienced "withdraws" where I start to sweat because my body will start to over heat and I will have shortness of breath, on top of feeling very lethargic and with very low energy. The pain in my legs will increase to overwhelming pain and ache-E-ness w/i 24 hrs. Undeniable symptoms, on the verge to the nearest emergency room but I was told Gabapentin has no side effects as well. Although Gabapentin has such adverse side affect, I still take the medication daily because of it great benefits of pain relief.

Question/Comment:
I was put on Neurontin for diabetic neuropathy, and by the day I had slowly increased the dosage to 300 mg x 3 a day for a total of 900 mg a day, I was legally insane. It created incredibly vivid and horrid thoughts: I would be sitting there, minding my own business when all of a sudden, I'd think: "I should get a gun and kill myself" and I realized VERY quickly that these thoughts were not mine!! I called my doctor, she told me to scale back to 300 mg a day, and "not to be alone, and to keep telling people how I was feeling emotionally". I scaled back to ZERO mg a day, this drug is way too dangerous for the mild help I got in dealing with pain. Too many of these medications are causing psycho-reactions and I think people need to be warned MUCH louder that they can cause such things. Scared me to death, if I hadn't been aware that I wasn't even slightly depressed, let alone suicidal, I cannot imagine what these drugs would have led me to do. Be WARY

Hello Ms.
I agree, I would have been very very scared had that happened to me as well. And even though it is no where even normal to our own rational thoughts (even with anxiety and depression) you were right in calling your doctor right away. I have a host of illnesses as well as permanent nerve damage all over my body, and extreme pain every single day to the point of being on 3 other pain prescriptions as well as Gabapentin. I have also lived my entire adult life with rather extreme anxiety and depression, of which I have been on almost every med out there for it. When I was not being treated with medicine, I was one of the few that would have those thoughts all on my own. Partly from the pain never ceasing and from not being believed by many doctors, but alot of it...I think was a chemical imbalance mixed with a bad past. Since I have been on this med, I have not had any of those thoughts and I have been helped greatly with the meds for about 6 months now. I personally think its worth trying and to be on guard, in case anything happens like it did to you. I am sorry that it didn't help you. I hope you have found something that has.

I started taking Neurontin almost 4 years ago to help with the pain & symptoms of Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy. I was started at 300mg 1x a day for a total of 300mg a day for a week. Then to 600mg a day for a week. Then to 900mg. a day for about 2 months. Then the Neurologist had me me slowly increase it to 1800mg a day over 2 weeks and then I stayed at 1800mg a day for about 2 months. Then he increased it to 2700mg a day for about 41/2 months. I still wasn't getting much relief so he increased it to 2 - 600mg 3x a day for a total of 3600 mg a day. The increased dosage did give me a little more relief and I was told that was the highest dosage they could go. I have been taking the same dosage now for about 3 years and I have never experienced any side effects. Maybe this has to do with how they started me on it so slowly and gradually.

Answer/Reply:
Gabapentin is most often used to treat seizures and neuropathic pain, but doctors are allowed to prescribe gabapentin "off-label". Regardless, you should let your doctor know if gabapentin is not providing you the same results as Zoloft and further discuss your treatment options.

I was prescribed by my primary care to take Neurontin for my knee pain secondary to arthritis. Iam a nurse and of course I read alot about the medication considering I have taken care of patient taking the same medication. The thing is Iam only 34 years old. All the side effects make me worry alot and having taken them for a week before I had my MRI and met the orthopedic... it did nothing to help me with the knee pain. My orthopedic better stop it since it doesnt really help much but instead continue with anti-inflammatory OTC drug (Motrin or Advil).
what do you think should I continue with Neurontin? I still suffer alot of pain everyday on my knees...they seem to be crippling at times.

Question/Comment:
Hi ! I started taking gabapentin 5 days ago. I have bilateral spinal stenosis with compression and herniated disc at L5. Was prescribed this about 5 months ago but was too scared to start taking it when I saw the side effects. I am on Zopiclone 7.5 mg to help me sleep and 8 co-codamol a day for pain. Cant take antiinflammatories because of kidney problems. Shoulder started to hurt about 8 weeks ago. Saw a physiotherapist who tells me I have a torn rotator cuff and my radial nerve is trapped-which is causing the awful pain in my shoulder. Couldn't stand the pain any longer and decided ( finally !) that I would take the gabapentin. I'm supposed to take 1800mg a day for my back, but thus far have only take 300mg in the evening...absolutly terrified to take anymore. Has anyone ever experienced tingling and numbness as a side effect of gabapentin ? My right side of face keeps tinglling than going numb...not sure if it s the drugor the trapped nerve. Today is day 5 and I'm reluctant to increase the dose...despite the fact that I'm still in terrible pain... until I figure out whats a side efect and what isn't..Am very tired with the 300mg , though and thats not changing at all...Has anyone got any advice for diehard coward ? !!! .Many thanks

I have spinal stenosis, had laminectomy 18 months ago for L3,4,5. L2 is now collapsed and I am facing surgery to repair and marry to previous surgery in October. I also have Fibromyalgia and cervical spine issues. I have been taking this medication, 1600 a.m. and 1600 p.m. for about 6 years. Initially, it was due to severe neck pain with headaches that were so debillitating I thought I was going to have to quit work. It took about 3 months to adjust up to this dosage and about 6 months to settle into the regular dosage with no sleepiness. I can't say I have had any other problems with it and I am on Wellbutrin and some other drugs; i.e., Zantac,Metropropolol and Piroxicam. I take a lot of vitamins and herbs, which may help my assimilation of these, but I cannot honestly say I have ever had a problem. I think it's worth the risk of trying to get past the sleepiness/slugishness due to the radical difference it made in my life once the shoulder muscles were under control. I hope that helps.

Question/Comment:
i have been taking Neurontin (Gabapentin) since 1999....severe nerve damage from back surgery...dr. did the ALIF procedure (from the front)...
used cages between vertabras
when i woke up i had severe buring in left calf and top of left foot....had NEVER had burning before!! just lower back pain and pain in sciatca nerve...the Morphene did NOT help...i begged for them to try and see what happened while i was there....but was sent home in 2 days with a high fever....had double pneuoma
then the dr did something...MRI & CT Scan...said was nothing touching anything...
referred me to another dr there...had temp. Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted....temp. is normally less than a week....think i should be in RECORD BOOK....try 59 days!!
then told me i'd need TWO of them!! no way was i going to since i was still in lots of burning pain....still taking Hydrocodone...
FINALLY i saw pain mgmt. dr....gave me Neurontin...kept increasing and now i take 800mgs 4 times a day...but i swap back and forth with my Pain meds....been wearing Durgasic 50 for past 1 and 1/2 yrs....was on Oxycontin for 2 yrs before that...
also took Topomax...started 25mg...then up to 75mg....mad em a lil weird...so quit it...but think i might try again...having PAINS in feet and toes along with burning....worse at times...
got off Gabapentin few weeks ago to try Lyrica....WOW...had fever with...felt really bad...so was back to Gabapentin....
i don't sleep but few hrs...then long naps during day...
tried CPAP...stop breathing several hundred times at night...can't wear....allergies cause me to breathe thru mouth...even tried strap over head to keep mouth shut....
PCP was going ot get me Oxygen to try before i got the CPAP....guess i need try that....
i didn't realize how dangerous it is to stop breathing so much!!
before my back surgery, i never took meds....except for maybe a few times after car wreck, motorcycle wreck, etc...and then hardly ever finished taking any pain meds prescribed me..
but i have been taking lots since 99....and haven't felt good since...
been wanting to try the "Radio Frequency Injection"?? bombard nerves in back with Radio Waves...anyone ever have or know of anyone?? have had 4 series of the reg. injections of 3 shots, 2 weeks apart...didn't help....Neuropathy is getting worse....
dr. said Radio Frequencies have helped people get off meds for up to 6 months...
and i'd love that....to feel good again....maybe go back to work....i shut my house moving and demolition business down....just not able to stay on job...
oh...i'm white 63 yr old male...other than a smoker with a lil breathing problems...

I am a 34 yr old female and had the same surgery as you...through the front and when i was in recovery they told me i was an inch taller. I was in tremendous pain in the hospital was there for 6 days. I left on dilaudin, valium and 40 mg of oxycotin and i would just cry everyday and night from the pain. My dr gave me 3 epidorals a month after surgery.... I than went to pain manangment were I had numerus epidorals, nerve blocks....You name it...they knew me in recovery. This continued for 2 yrs and am very thankful that I have a wonderfully understanding job that let me work for as long as I cld and let me finish my days at home. I lost my whole social life until finally I met a client who was an orthepedic but specialized in hand surgeries (I'm an interior designer) who gave me hope he gave me a surgeon about an hour away from me ( I live in NY) who they call the miracle man. I went to Northern westchester hospital where my my surgeon and his co surgeon who happens to be a nerosugeon worked on me for 5 hrs and put alot of metal and screws in me. When i woke up in recovery He told me the cage was way to large for my body and had caused every nerve on my rt side to be crushed, he also removed my facet joints. So I had a much more serious surgery this time and it is a month today and
I'am off oxycotin. I'am on 5 mg of percacet 4 times a day and neurotin which I just started because I had a severe allergic reaction to Lyrica. My dr also came to see me 2x a day and I'am single and was going to be doing my recovery at my parents home...he aslo called them everyday. I dont even need to wear a brace,,,,I still feel some pain but its only a month and the pain level is abt a 4 my last sugery I was well above a 20 with pain level.\
Hope this helps...dont give up...some DR still do care.

I am experiencing the same pain , burning , stabbing , numbness in my leg , that travels all the way down to my toes , and at times I cannot tell exactly what I am standing on . I had a Lumbar Laminectomy with hardware , and fusion . L2-l3 fusion , L4-L5 fusion along with hardware , ped. screws , and clamps to hold my spine tight . I had Mri , Emg ( that showed severe nerve root irritation ) I just had a Myelogram ( ouch ) and my doc said the same thing that everything looks great . O.K. I am not stupid , nor am I mentally challenged , I have excruciating pain lower right lumbar area , across my butt, all the way down to my big toes . Neuro. put me on Gaba. 300 mgm, 3 X 's a day for 30 days , the n will consider upping my dosage . Wants for me to see pain management doctor again , ( had two injections before anterior cervical disectomy with hardware , and fusion , the three before my lumbar laminectomy , and they did nothing !) I am at a loss here as well , I am getting extremely depressed , and told my Neuro. that the pain is not getting any better .

I was given a prescription for this because my sister is on it in another state. I have FMS, sjogrens & rheu arthritis, the pain has become unbearable. I was also given METHOTREXATE also which I took 4 yrs ago & it really helped. I would love to only take 1, does anyone think that I can get by with only the GABAPENTIN ?
I should have ask the Dr yesterday, but forgot. I see my primary Dr tomorrow so I will ask, but curious what you all have to say.

You should stick to your guns if you are still at a pain level higher than a "3". You know your body and how it feels so make it clear to your doctors how severe and dbilitating your pain is.
Thats my two sents. The MD may suggest another medication so be open to it if you can.
Best Wishes to you.

Question/Comment:
I have used Gabapentin for relief of night pain after a total knee replacement. The pain prevented sleep, and the improvement after starting 300 mg. of gabapentin was immediate. I am now 41/2 months postop, and I still have enough resting pain that it interferes with sleep, so I am still on the drug. I go to bed early, about 9:30, and occasionally, take a second 300 mg. tablet at 1 AM or so. If you are having postop pain after a TKR, I would recommend that you give it a try. The side effects have been minimal. I am a bit fuzzy headed in the morning, but this is gone after a cup of tea and breakfast.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking gabapentin for nearly a year now and am very very happy with it. I have fibromyalgia and suffered for a very long time (until I changed docs!). It took approximately 2 months for him to fully diagnose me but he'd put me on a small dose of gabapentin and upped it a bit at a time over several months until I was at 1800 mg per day. It wasn't until last month at my neurologists appt. that I was on the 1800 when my neurologist upped me to 2400mg per day. I was in terrrible, horrible pain from the fibro and that was from neck to knees. My PCP was concerned over upping the dose But it has proven to work out well. I consider myself a lucky woman in that I've only had any side effect when I first began it. I have also found a wonderful psychiatrist who reviewed my medical history and asked why I'd never taken anything for sleep disorder which I've suffered w/ for over 30 Years; he gave me Trazodone-Love Knowing I sleep and Suffer Far Less Pain. I have other physical ailments that we are working on and I hope that I will be able to have a medication like gabapentin (one that works for me w/ little/no side effects!) if I am in need of another medication. BTW, I've Lost 20 lbs since I've been sleeping properly and in Less pain! Let's face it, feeling better all around means getting out of bed/off the couch...

My husband has been taking neurontin about 5 years and he would rather get off of all other meds if he had to, and keep the neurontin. It actually helps with the pain and don't make you feel drugged up. He has back pain, degenerative disk disease. It has helped him greatly and there are no side effects for him. Who knows if there will be long term effects later down the road, but he is willing to take that chance to live a normal life.

I have been on the gabapentin for over 6 years. I've been taking gabapentin for almost 2 years now. I have severe degenerative disc disease affecting all of the discs in my cervical spine (neck). This med has made a HUGE difference (for the better) in my ability to fall asleep at night somewhat pain free. I haven't had any of the irritablility side effects that some encounter. My injury started 30 years ago and has gotten progressively worse each year. Today, I'm considered 100% disabled because of it.

78 yr.

I have noticed memory problems in the past year or so---but so have my friends of this age who do not take gabapentin!!!

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Ear pain was reported by a few patients during clinical trials of gabapentin (Neurontin), but it is not a common side effect. In some people, side effects may be related to the amount of medication you take - and may improve if you reduce the dose or stop taking the medication. Please talk to your doctor about your concern with your ear pain and do not try to adjust or stop your gabapentin without talking to your doctor first. Suddenly stopping some medications may lead to more serious problems.

Please do not rush upping your dose. It has taken me about 4 months to get up to 1500 mg 3X a day. I do have tingling in my fingers on the right side. It takes my body over 2 weeks to adjust to a dose change. Go slow.

Question/Comment:
i have been taking Neurontin (Gabapentin) since 1999....severe nerve damage from back surgery...dr. did the ALIF procedure (from the front)...
when i woke up i had severe buring in left calf and top of left foot....had NEVER had burning before!! just lower back pain and pain in sciatca nerve...the Morphene did NOT help...i begged for them to try and see what happened while i was there....but was sent home in 2 days with a high fever....had double pneuoma
then the dr did something...MRI & CT Scan...said was nothing touching anything...
used cages between vertabras
referred me to another dr there...had temp.
PCP was going ot get me Oxygen to try before i got the CPAP....guess i need try that....
i didn't realize how dangerous it is to stop breathing so much!!
before my back surgery, i never took meds....except for maybe a few times after car wreck, motorcycle wreck, etc...and then hardly ever finished taking any pain meds prescribed me..
but i have been taking lots since 99....and haven't felt good since...
been wanting to try the "Radio Frequency Injection"?? bombard nerves in back with Radio Waves...anyone ever have or know of anyone?? have had 4 series of the reg. injections of 3 shots, 2 weeks apart...didn't help....Neuropathy is getting worse....
dr. said Radio Frequencies have helped people get off meds for up to 6 months...
and i'd love that....to feel good again....maybe go back to work....i shut my house moving and demolition business down....just not able to stay on job...
oh...i'm white 63 yr old male...other than a smoker with a lil breathing problems...
have good health....complete check up 2 months ago...almost 3 pages of blood work up and everything came back good....have had lil blockage in neck....from smoking but taking Pravachol has reduced some of it....
any help with any of this will be greatly appreciated...
Thanks

I see my primary Dr tomorrow so I will ask, but curious what you all have to say.
thanks

Question/Comment:
My husband has been taking neurontin about 5 years and he would rather get off of all other meds if he had to, and keep the neurontin. It actually helps with the pain and don't make you feel drugged up. He has back pain, degenerative disk disease. It has helped him greatly and there are no side effects for him. Who knows if there will be long term effects later down the road, but he is willing to take that chance to live a normal life.

Question/Comment:
I have been on the gabapentin for over 6 years. I have fibromyalgia, RA, degenerative disk disease, RLS, neuropathy, terrible problems with sleep, migraines, leg cramps, PTSD, etc. All of the difficulties are interconnected and feed each other. I am not a person in favor of drugs unless absolutley needed. But I would have no quality of life without this one. My dosage has been increased over time with no problems.

Question/Comment:
I've been taking gabapentin for almost 2 years now. I have severe degenerative disc disease affecting all of the discs in my cervical spine (neck). This med has made a HUGE difference (for the better) in my ability to fall asleep at night somewhat pain free. I haven't had any of the irritablility side effects that some encounter. My injury started 30 years ago and has gotten progressively worse each year. Today, I'm considered 100% disabled because of it.
