Question/Comment:
Can side effects from Gabapentin manifest after taking the drug for 3 or more years without side effects? I have had problems the last 4 months with sore mouth and my tongue is sore on the underneath on both sides. I DO NOT want to quit taking the drug because it is so GREAT for my Fibromyalgia which causes me much pain. Before starting on Gabapentin, I was having to take more pain pills plus sleeping pills and still was not able to sleep most nights till in the wee hours of the morning due to extreme pain.
Does anyone have a hint as to what I might do with the sore mouth and tongue without having to stop the Gabapentin? I have read that Lyrica also can cause a sore mouth.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Approximately 5% of patients who took gabapentin reported dry mouth as a side effect during the clinical trials of the drug. A smaller percent (1.2%) reported sore throat while taking gabapentin. iGuard has also received a few reports of sore mouth/throat from gabapentin - less than 1% of iGuard members using gabapentin report this side effect. You should contact your doctor and make an appointment to review your concerns and evaluate the side effects. Your doctor can also ensure your sore mouth is not occurring because of another cause.

I started taking Gabapentin for about 6 months and a few weeks ago I noticed that I have a sore throat all the time and it seems to be swollen at times. I have an appt with dr in a few weeks to see what he says about it. It must be a side effect but it helps my Endometriosis pain and I feel so much better with it.

I have been taking gabapentin for about 7 months, but only when I need it for my nerve pain. But lately it seems when I am not on the medicine, I feel more depressed. Does that make sense to anyone?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Gabapentin has been reported to show an increase in suicidal thoughts in a small population of patients who have taken it to treat any of its indications. Also, iGuard has received some reports of mood or behavior changes by patients taking gabapentin - however this number was low, with less than 1% of iGuard patients taking gabapentin reporting mood or behavior changes. Unfortunately, there is not a lot information available to show that stopping the medication or taking it as needed is linked to depression. If the depression is bothersome or worsening or there are other dramatic emotional swings, you should consult your doctor.

it is the gabapentin causing the tingling. I have the same problem but have learned to live with it. got all kinds of tests done but came back very healthy. The tingling is a rare side effect, but dont be too alarmed. It has started to go away, but the med is the definite cause. dont panic and good luck..i take 2400mg a day.

Answer/Reply:
I have been having strange symptoms since starting to wean off of Gabapentin. First there were what only can be described (I first heard this from someone and didn't know what she meant until I had them--"brain zaps"-miserable) I had been taking 300 mg 2/day, and my doctor gave me 100 mg pillsso that I could wean more slowly, and I have gone very slowly. I continue to have odd symptoms--and the weird tingling is one of them. I also bruise very easily, which I thought was a symptom of taking the pill. I am concerned and trying to find more info after reading an article in SELF magazine about some risky generic medicine, as I was one of those who was switched. That's when the major weight gain began, and I did not know it was due to the gabapentin until I started coming off it. Anyone know any details about the "impurities" in gabapentin made by Ranbaxy, an Indian company that the FDA has looked into?

I was on neurotin for a few years and moved went to a different neurologist who put me on gabepentin which i was on for a little over a year and the side effects never stopped. I woke up with headaches everday, depression, mood swings, insomnia off and on and the first capsules the prescribed I had trouble swallowing, the pharmacist got in some tablets the long oblong ons, however continued to have problems. My neurologist finally gave me a prescription for neurotin with no substitues and I have no side effects.

I, too, have gained weight on Gabapentin, They say this is a side effect. What can I do to counteract this side effect.
69 year old Female
Posted: 2009-07-01 11:51:34
iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Weight gain is a side effect of gabapentin. You can begin to counteract this side effect by trying to eat a heart-healthy diet, which is one rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat or fat-free milk and milk products, lean meat, beans, poultry, fish, eggs and nuts. Limit your intake of foods with saturated or trans-fat, sodium and added sugar. If possible, try to get 30 minutes of activity a day as many days of the week as possible and limit your alcohol intake. If your weight gain is sudden, contact your doctor to discuss as it may be caused by something other than the side effects of the gabapentin. Also, if you are able to make these changes and still are gaining weight, discuss your weight gain with your doctor as there may be other options to treat your medical condition or other options for treating the weight gain.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Gabapentin is used to treat neuropathies ( pain and tingling) as one indication. If this is the reason you were prescribed the drug and then stopped taking it , the symptom would come back. Rash is a side effect that also has been reported by patients taking gabapentin. You should consult your doctor about your symptoms for evaluation and treatment.

Question/Comment:
what are the effects that you will have when you stop taking gabapentin?
63 year old Female
Posted: 2009-06-03 07:42:37
iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Withdrawal of gabapentin should happen gradually over at least one week. If you are taking gabapentin to control seizures, you the most serious effect from stopping gabapentin is an increased risk of seizure frequency (how often seizures happen), and may even cause a different type of seizure than you have had in the past. Other common withdrawal symptoms that may be experienced by anyone taking gabapentin include anxiety, insomnia, nausea, pain and sweating. For these reasons and many others, do not stop taking your medication suddenly and do not stop without the consent and knowledge of your physician. Please make an appointment with your physician to discuss your concerns.

Memory loss or amnesia is reported by less than 1% of iGuard members taking Neurontin. Depression and amnesia are both listed as side effects in the product labeling of this medication. Anecdotal reports of long term memory loss have been reported even after Neurontin was discontinued. Discussing your specific situation with your physician and possibly a lawyer is the most reliable way to find out about lawsuits and whether they apply to your case.

Question/Comment:
Since being prescribed Neurotin, most of the pain in my hands and feet has dissipated
(600 mg, 3 times a day). The pain was so bad at first that I could not even open a door on a vehicle. Neurotin has helped in this regard but the side effects are pretty drastic in causing insomnia, numbness and tingling in my hands and feet, memory loss and memory haziness, and loss of balance. I find myself not being able to concentrate at times and the pain is coming back in my hands to the point that I cannot hold things (pen, pencil, dishes, etc.) for longer than a few minutes. My strength is practically gone in my hands.
I am beginning to wonder if just taking Hydrocodone (I rarely take this med) or another similar Neurotin drug all by itself is a better alternative.

I saw a dr that saw my bad back under microscope and he issued Gabapentin for me. I told him, on my next visit, that he had given me A Miracle Pill! No More Pain! without it, I can feel all the pinched nerves, and the vertebraes scraping each other, and the Pain was almost to much to bear. But with the gabapentin, which I'm still on since 2006, I'm able to walk, do dishes (to an extend, I can't stand very long due to back spasms).
He said, "It tells the nerves to stop talking to each other." Wow! Its a miracle pill!

I have several conditions that include Restless Leg Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Lyphacitic Colitis, SVT, Reynauds Syndrome, Osteoporosis (since childhood), OsteoArthritis, Low blood pressure, Anxiety and SVT. I take many, many medications. I have been taking Gabapentin for a couple of years now. It does not seem to affect the Restless Leg Syndrome at all, but helps in many, many other ways. I have none of the side effects you all are having except the unexplained weight gain. Since I am still active (in my own opinion, lol), I dread to think I will gain more as more years go by and I get less active. But oh well. It's all part of the big picture and we have to continue to roll with the punches or just give up. I'm in it for the long haul. Good luck to you all.

After being prescribed Neurontin for fibromyalgia pain, I began noticing a diminished sense of smell. I had always had an acute sense of smell and considered it a good thing. This loss of the ability to detect odors bothered me and hence I stopped taking the drug. It has taken two years for a small amount of sense of smell to return. Wonder if anyone else has had a similar reaction.

Yes, I have. I thought it was my smoking for over 25 years that had been the cause. I have quit smoking for 1 1/2 years and my sense of smell still has not returned. I quit the gabapentin because it raised my blood sugar to an unhealthy level. After not taking it for three weeks my blood sugar returned to a normal range. I hope my sense of smell returns soon. Good luck to you.

Question/Comment:
Although I loved the results I had from taking gabapentin -- pain was decreased, it helped my sleep difficulties, etc., I quit taking it after gaining over 40 pounds in about 8 months. I found out that this medication was probably the cause, after going on an 800 calorie a day diet and still gaining weight. In addition, my feet and ankles swelled so much it was impossible for me to put on any shoes except for Crocs. So, be careful with this and if you start gaining weight for no reason and your feet swell, be aware that gabapentin could be the cause.

Question/Comment:
I hope this comment can be helpful to someone else, because I am about to scream with pain. I have a spinal cord tumor, and the doctors prescribed Gabapentin years agoi. I take 1200mg, 3 times each day. In addition, they gave me Lyrica, and also Hydrocodone. Well, between the discomfort in my legs from the tumor, and the fact that I can't walk, I have trouble getting around. I am confined to a wheelchair.
I am wondering if anyone is having problems with short-term memory problems, secondary to any of these medications? I stopped taking Lyrica, because I thought it was the culprit. Now, I have more pain and disability, I developed a kidney stone, and they gave me Augmentin...allergic to that! Right now, I am in need of help, but all they want to do is give me another pill...or two. Anyone have suggestions?

I also am in severe pain if I do not take my medication. I took Gabapentin, but that only helped the "nerve" and "skin" pain. I took Hydrocodone which helped ALOT but I build up a tolerance quickly and started to need more and more for it to keep working well. Then my doctor started giving me Methadone- what a wonder drug! If you truely need it for pain it is great. There is no sharp return of pain after 4 or 6 hours, once the Methadone was in my system it now takes 24 hours to wear off. So now I can take only a couple pills a day of Methadone and Hydrocodone a couple times a day and with each of these doses (4 times a day) I also take a Gabapentin- now my pain is truely and finally (after 8 years) under control. Good luck to you!

Answer/Reply:
Hi there. I'm inclined to say that the short-term memory problems are from the hydrocodone. My father and I have both been on Norco for a chronic pain (his is back injury related, and mine, neuropathic pain), and we both have major short-term memory issues. Have you checked with your doctor about this? Or sometimes even better, a pharmacist?
It sounds odd, but you could meet with a pain specialty clinic where they usually have pain psychologists. Or you could meet with any psychologist of your liking (health psychologists may be best for this type of issue). Anyway, they could help you develop ways to work on improving short-term memory (using cues, lists, journals or logs, etc). I was working with a neurologist for a long time, and eventually switched over to a pain specialtist at a specialty clinic and couldn't be happier that I did. The doctors just really seem to know their stuff since all they ever deal with is pain.
Best of luck to you!

Answer/Reply:
I'm so sorry that you're going through all of this and will pray for you. In the meantime, have they suggested going to a pain control specialist? To be honest, I personally don't care for them, but that's just me. The meds that I'm given for my pain issues seem to work to I have no need for someone like that. But it seems to me that if your pain meds were helping you, you wouldn't mind taking yet 'another pill!' Pain Control specialists generally have other options of controlling pain other than just giving the patient more pills to take. They can offer you ways of controlling you're pain either without more drugs or at least with a more productive combination of pains that are designed to reduce the amount of meds your taking and reduce the amount of pain that your in at the same time. If your doc won't help you with this, maybe you should look into this yourself and call the local hospitals in your area. Most hospitals have physician's referral services. Good luck, I hope I was able to offer a solution to your problem! My bet is that your becoming very angry and frustrated, and that is probably contributing to the pain your already having!Take care!

Sorry I typed tylenol. wrong... Short term memory has been very bad and I get very down as I am now on disability because of pain and memory problems. I do not think there is a good answer for dealing with pain. I used to stay very active and now I can hardly get 1/2 the stuff done I used to do in 3 hours. I have had the peroneal nerve decompressed in 3 places where the arthritis impinged it. It was a horrible surgery and even after 7 months I am adjusting to the pain. I had to have my neck fused in four discs because of the arthritis. So there have been 4 other surgeries and it is probably boring for others to hear about but I am dealing with it as well as I can. Having support does really help alot.

Question/Comment:
Does Gabapentin make anyone else feel "weird" or "spacey"? My doctor has recently prescribed me Gabapentin (just 3 days ago) for chronic headaches. I have been taking Topamax as a preventative (for 9 mos) and it has been doing a great job, but I still get horrible menstrual headaches, so she prescribed the Gabapentin as a 2nd preventative. So, I've been taking this medication for 3 days now, and this medication make me feel WEIRD. It's a little hard to explain, but about 20-30 minutes after taking my dose (300mg, 2x a day....then I will take 600mg 2x a day starting tomorrow) I start to feel very spacey, almost like I am a little drunk. My mind starts to wander off and it's hard to concentrate. I get very tired, not sleepy, just tired. My coordination is a little slow as well and all I can think about is "Man, I feel so weird!"..... Jeez, and everyone says Topamax is bad! Topamax didn't effect me like this at all. I've looked up everything I can regarding side effects and there's nothing I can find that is very specific. Anyone have similar reactions to Gabapentin? As with the Topamax, I'm willing to wait out a side effect if I know an end is in sight....

I am a 42 y/o male.
I started taking Gabapentin in this past Feb. I am currently at 900mg 3X a day, plus Ultram at night and Nerve blocks every 3 months. This is due to a Hernia repair that didnt go so well over 4 years ago. I have taken Lortab, Vicodin, Topomax, Tylenol 3, plus Nerve blocks every 6mos which is now down to every 3mos. I recently had a nerve re-section of (2 ea) in my left leg which resulted in my having to take the current medication and treatments.
What doses are you taking with the topomax? I was up to 4 pills a day inwhich I didnt like at all. All I did was sleep... The Gabapentin causes you to be a little drowsey but it passes as you get use to the doses.. Once you step up the doses, you become drowsey again...
There is no cure for my current situation, no more surgeries, just medication and nerve blocks that helps a little.. I have seen a bit of relief with the Gabapentin from before where I could hardly walk and had constant cramping and pain.... There is alway a side affect from medication. I have taken alot more than listed... Unless your looking for a pill like the one in Huey Lewis and the News song " I want a new drug".... I do wish you the best of luck...

My husband and I have lived what you are going through. My husband also had a bad heria repair, however the hospital gave him MRSA and the dr botched the surgery and sewed his illio inguinal and illiohypogastric nerves into the mesh he used to close the hernia. My husband was also on Gabapentin and now has memory loss. It has been 4 years since he got off of it and still cant remember ess ache I tee. He has had to drop out of college and has no other skills he can use to gain employment due to this mess. Gabapentin was developed to treat sezuires and they discovered quite by accident that it treats neuropathic pain, This drug also almost broke up our relationship, he was so mean and nasty when he was on this drug that I had made up my mind to leave. I did not care whether or not he could take care of himself. Thats how bad it was, thank god he decided to stop taking it, it wasn't working anyway and the dr had increased the dosage and made excuses too many times. The cure for my husbands pain was too sever both of those nerves, he has no feeling in his left thigh however he can walk without a cane and has little pain, what he does have he can live with. If you would like to email me feel free wabeasley@gmail.com I hope your condition improves.

I too had "weird feelings" when I first started this drug. I've been on it for over a year now for nerve damage caused by 3rd degree burns. Because my condition has been constantly changing I have been changing my intake accordingly - then letting my doctor know. You might try a lower dose if it doesn't improve. You might also take the one dose at night just before bed. BUT yes, at least for me it did improve.

Yes it does make me feel "spacey" it's the only way I can describe it. I have been on it since October of 2007 when I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. My dosage was just increased to 1800mg a day. I suggest a full stomach when you take it. The feeling passes and all I can say I'd rather feel that way than to deal with the pain.

When I first started taking Gabapentin, I had some of the same side effects, but they were worth the reliefe I got from the burning pain in my leg following back surgery on L2-5. This was in 2001 and I am still taking it. I take 300mg 3 times a day and 6oomg at bedtime. I would not be able to sleep without it. The Side effects only bothered me for a short time and then I guess my body got use to it. I have since had both of my knees replaced and and i continue to take the meds. I take many meds and each plays its part inkeeping me going, so I guess I will continue. I am getting ready for foot surgery in June, so will have to see what happens after that.

I only take 300 mg. a day and always at night a few hours before I go to bed. If I stay up for a while after the pill takes affect, I do feel a little spacy, but also sleepy. I certainly get a good nights sleep. I get out of bed without the pains in my lower back, buttocks, and down the legs, so this is very helpful for me. Then during the day a couple Tylenol gets me through the day. I have had about 8 epidural shots in the lower spine over the past 25 years, but hope to avoid more shots and will continue on with the Gabapentin and Tylenol. I have gained 8 lbs. over the winter, but felt that was from sitting so much and not eating proper foods. Good luck in finding what will work for you.

I know your post is over two months old but I hope this will help you. You should check a good Endocrinologist who specializes in bio-identical hormones. Many doctors and people in general think that because a women has all her female parts that everything is fine for the most part, except for cysts and things like that. Your body produces hormones that work together and in concert with each other, if they get out of balance on the levels you could have problems like you have described. In essence your doctor is treating the symptoms rather than investigating the cause, which may well be hormone imbalance. It may be better in the long run to balance out hormones than to treat symptoms with anti-seizure drugs. Bio-identical are far different than synthetic and they do not make you gain weight and have other weird stuff that goes on. They will test your blood levels and see where things are at and if there is an imbalance they will give you some bio hormones that will bring things back in balance. Bio hormones also do not have the risks of cancer like synthetic ones do. The hormones are compounded by a pharmacist especially for your needs, typically it will cost less than $50 per month for the hormones. Insurance has a weird way of paying for compounded medication so the reimbursement may be low. Good Luck...

Question/Comment:
Medicare wants me to switch to Gabapentin from the Mirapex I have used for years to treat my Restless Leg Syndrome. I had bad reactions to Requip and LevDopa and am leary after reading reactions to Gabapentin. I have requested an exception to this year's formulary changes, but I assume the drug companies and insurance companies and their lobbyists have greater influence than seniors in the Medicare system! Having suffered RLS for many years, I am loath to change what works for me! I already have a weight problem and ankles swollen unless I wear 30/40 compression stockings (here in a warm climate, Florida) so any advice will be very much appreciated!

I'm a 68 yr old male who took 1800mg/day of gabapentin for shingles on the right side of my face and head. Fortunately I had no reaction of any kind. It took away the pain along with the help of percoset. In addition, a pain mgmt Dr Injected the tri-geminal nerves with lidocane to help ease the pain.

I took Gabapentin 3 x 100mg/day for 6 months after having an ulnar nerve transposition. It made me extremely tired all the time, I had sleep problems, and beginning with month 5 had extreme stomach pains. End result, I slowly quite taking it and I still have some nerve pain, but it is extremely small compared to what it was while I was taking this medicine. I would suggect that everyone educate yourselves on the sideside effects of this drug and then discuss it with you physician.

I don't know if this info will help you in any way, just want to relay my current experiences if it can. I am 55 years old and have leg and arm pain, due to a spinal cord tumor. I have been taking 1200 mg of gabapentin daily for quite some time. Recently, I started having short-term memory loss. It is very scary for me. My doctor said that it is not dementia or alzheimer's. So, what could it be?
I take many medicines, and they all list the side-effects. When your doctor gives them to you, you follow their advice. However, there comes a time when you have to decide which is better, the pain or the loss of life and inter-personal relationships. It's a question that only you can answer for yourself.
I personally have started to wean myself off of some of th medications. It means that are am increasingly becoming more stiff and uncomfortable, but if it helps me be more cognizant, it's worth it to me.

I I have been taking Gabapentin for almost three years. I take 300mg 3x a day, with antidepressives and Skelaxin 800mg. 3x daily also. I have noticed swelling in my hands and feet, and legs. I thought I had gained weight, but my stomach also swells. It is very frustrating, but I would rather deal with a few side affects than deal with the pain I have.

I never had a weight problem or swelling till now, also they thought I was in congeital heart failure due to this all because the gave me gabapentin instead of nuerontin. so be careful.

Maybe your doctor could have you take 600MG in the eve? I take that dosage before bedtime for nerve damage in the lumbar spine that causes pain all the way to my feet, where it is worse. I have noticed if I don't go to bed soon after taking it, I do experience all kinds of strange things. Just a little sleepy the first hour. Two hours later a little dizzy and a lot sleepy. Three hours in, seeing double, dizzy, sleepy. I should go to bed huh? 4-5 hours I am so sleepy, dizzy, wobbly, nauseous, seeing triple etc.. I literally feel as though I completely drunk! I am bouncing off the walls! (Idon't do that often by the way) At this point I HAVE to go to bed. I don't think I could physically function at all if I had to take it during the day. It does help me sleep and it seems to be helping the nerve pain also.

You are experiencing typical side effects of Gabapentin/Neurontin. It has been my experience, I am a medically retired Physician Assistant in the state of Pennsylvania, that when the blood pressure is involved it is time to discontinue the medication. There are other meds out there that do the same thing as the Gabapentin without these side effects, the one that comes to mind the quickest is Lyrica.
I wish you well in your attempt to find a better drug to treat your situation. I too am on Neurontin and found that the generic gave me side effects but the brand name did not. That may be an option.

Answer/Reply:
The first thing you need to understand is that all of the "symptoms" you are describing are direct reactions to the Gabapentin / Neurontin. As a medically retired Physician Assistant from the state of PA, I would recommend talking to your physician and explaining that you are not comfortable with the side effects. When the blood pressure is involved, it is time to look at alternatives.
I take Neurontin 300mg three times a day for Fibromyalgia. The doctor I go to tried to use the generic Gabapentin and I had similar reactions. We opted for a brand medically necessary prescription and it changed everything.
I wish you luck, there is another drug ... relatively new that does a similar thing to the Neurontin called Lyrica it might be a better option for you.
I hope all works out but PLEASE contact whoever prescribed the generic to you, at least give the brand name a try it is the lifesaver from the Fibromyalgia.

I've been taking Gabapentin for almost 3 yrs now for nerve pain in my legs. I started taking 2 600mgs per day. It has not had any adverse reaction on me except when I started taking the 3rd 600mg tablet, my left foot started to swell. I reduced it back down to 2 600mgs per day & then I started taking 1-1/2 600 mgs tablets a day & that seems to do the trick. Except my legs still hurt quite a bit even after taking the medication.

Not sure if you are still feeling the same way a week later, but from my experience, the side effects subsided over time. They made me feel strange at first as well, but I have been on 600mg, 4 times a day (so 2400 mg a day total) for quite some time now, and I don't feel like I have many side effects at all. Everyone reacts differently, but give it time to see if the side effects subside.
Hope this helped a little. Good luck.

I have been taking Gabapentin for nerve pain for over a year now...started just as you have...Yes, the same sensations, but it has to build up in your system, then these go away Are you seeing a neurologist? Report this to Dr as you may need to reduce until symptoms subsice i.e 1 day for a week for instance, then 2 aday etc...the pain never goes away completley, at least not for me
I am on 3600 mgs a day now and will most likely increase more..see my nero today
they say some need 5,000 or more....I have had high blood pressure, but comes and goes
I have had two hand surgeries and 2 elbow surgeries...first surgery, nerves were severed 2nd repair and reconstruction....I have conduction now but still pain, tingling, numbness
Nerves heal at 1 " a month I am told, so I have a year to go! If I did not take this med, the pain is SO MUCH worse

Just want to validate that Gabapentin raised my blood pressure 160/95. My doctor wanted to give me medication for my high blood pressure. I tried to tell her that it was the gaba. She said it wasn't. I quit taking it for two weeks and then did a series of blood pressure tests. I am now down to 120 over 70 something. I am taking a lot of pills for M.S, chronic pain, frozen shoulder. Gaba helped with the nerve pain and for a while actually worked as an antidepressant. It's not anymore. So I have to make the choice of high blood pressure and more pills. I choose no more gaba as I can have a heart attack or stroke from the high blood pressure. Hope this helps someone else.

I have been on Gabapentin since Jan of this year and was put on antidepressants as well, first Cymbalta, then Wellbutrin. The doctor says the depression is caused by the chronic pain and since the pain and the use of Gabapentin started about the same time, I really can't say if my depression was induced by the Gabapentin. Would be interested in finding out more. Even with the use of antidepressants I am still very irritable and have absolutely no motivation. All I want to do is sleep. My doctor now wants to add Elavil (another antidepressant) to the cocktail of meds I'm already taking along with the Wellbutrin, so here goes.... I'm afraid with all these medications that affect the chemicals of the brain that either not going to wake up or wind up in worse mental shape I ever was to begin with.

I have been taking Gabapentin (generic for Neurotin) 300mg, (2x in morning, 1x in afternoon, and 2x at night. I also have the ability to take less for those days I experience less pain). I have been on this medication for many years. I am taking it for parasthetica maralgia or more commonly known as dying nerve in one of my limbs. I am not diabetic and there is no family history to explain this condition. I do not believe this medication is addictive. However it does work for the nerve pain I experience, which is sometimes very excruciating. My doctor told me I will experience pain whether I lose or gain weight, whether I sit or stand all day and there is nothing else out in the market that will work for me. I am allergic to aspirin and all preparations that have aspirin-like substances in it. So in my mind I am happy with gabapentin!
As for depression? No, I do not feel this drug has caused me to feel depressed.
I also believe it has helped me with my migraines. I seem to experience 95% LESS migraines then without taking this medication.

Ihave taken Gabapentin 300mg x4 for about 10 years now. The irritability and anxiety I experience is usually from disrupted sleep caused by break thru pain. My bones are as strong as ever. I have found that 20 minutes a day in direct sunshine seems to help with the nerve pain requiring extra medication. I did try the newer version of the rx called Lyrica. I worked very well and less break thru, however I had trouble will my hands and feet swelling.

I have been prescribed this medication since last June or July 2008. I have had many issues since then. I can not say it has been from a certain medication or not. I recently quit all medications I was on (and I have had alot of problems to go with it.). I may not have been wise to do so. I stopped everything. I don't always understand all I feel or go thru. Shouldn't I have a better feeling in my leg than I do? I was told this would not only help eleviate the pain but to help with the looks I have had with my leg and foot. I was lead to believe that the numbness and nerve sensations that I have experienced can be helped with a "long term" medication. I have done well...brecause of my drive- not the medication. I was told it would be 12 to 18 months- to re-coup from an injury like I had. I have many and ALOT of questions about this medication...... I think I am where I am now from my 'exercise' - working out in my neighbor's pool., walking hard several times daily and doing the exercises the 'visiting nurses' gave me to do. I honestly don't think all of them can be answered here. I know this is vague. This is all I can do with the time I have right now. send a response and I will reply if needed.

Question/Comment:
I have been on Gabapentin 3200mg (800mg x 4) following spinal cord injury as a result of burst fracture of T12. It helps somewhat; however when gravity compresses the three lower lombar bulged and herinated discs, the legs get heavy and I am prone to falls. The main issue is the relationship of my body absorbing vitamin D while on this medication. In the two years, by bones have gone to osteopini to osteoperisos, even while taking Boniva. It seems there is no stopping this bone degeneration. I am considering stopping Gabapentin and going into some other medicated pain management and taking Forteo, which is a 24 month daily injection. I also have sleep issues consisting of 1 to 1 1/2 hour periods that I thought were related to the neuropathy in my legs. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. I know I am taking a high dose of Gabapentin, but suggest long term users have bone density tests taken yearly.

I am a 34 year old male and suffer from pain due to a back/spinal injury I recently endured. I also suffer from scoleosis and kyphosis. I have been taking Gabaentin 300 MG x3/day, Tizanidine HCL 4 MG x3/day (as needed), Tramidol HCL 50 MG every 4 hrs (as needed for pain), Diclofenac SOD 75 MG along with a series of corticosteroid injections in the spine (and recently in the muscles on the right side of my back) since approximately January of this year. Because of depression due to my injuries and loss of work my pain management specialist also had prescribed me Cymbalta 30 MG increasing to 60 MG /day a month & a half ago. About two weeks ago I ran out of the Cymbalta and informed my specialist, but he didn't write me a new script for it. For the past few months since starting these medicatons I have experience a lot of drowsiness and it has been increasing more and more. Also within the past few days I have been feeling as though I'm in a dream-like state, a bit out of sorts. Yesterday I felt dizzy most of the day. I have been experiencing irritability, sweats with the AC and fan running to be shortly followed by periods of feeling extremely cold and having chills. I want to know if these side effects are withdrawals from the Cymbalta my specialist neglected to represcribe me, caused by interactions of all the medications I'm taking, side effects from the injections. or possibly a combination of all three. I have been feeling really horrible, especially since this weekend, don't know how long I can continue feeling like this.

I am a 51 year old female with an cervical SCI. It seems as though many of your symptoms are from your SCI, but can be related to medication. They are common in many people. The sweating is probably a side effect from Tizanidine or Neurontin. I take Diazepam for spasms, it works like Tizanidine in decreasing muscle spasm, it causes within 1 hour of administration severe sweating. As for feeling cold or hot-that is from your central nervous system basically going crazy from SCI.Sometimes I am so cold I have to take a hot shower til the tank runs out of hot water to warm up. You are taking alot of medications that will make you feel dizzy, drowsy and out of sorts. Try to get past these things and concentrate on something else. It's called distraction technique. Do something else with your time, learn all you can about SCI, be your own advocate-ex.. ask why your cymbalta was discontinued. Cymbalta is usually given for depression or neuropahic pain. Depression 30 mgs. Neuropathic pain 60 mgs.Why was it originaly given.? If you have an increase in anxiety, an increase in blood pressure, insomnia, increase in deoression or altered liver enzymes-your Dr. may stop giving this medication. This info is straight from my Drug Guide for Nurses. I was a nursing student LPN at the time of my injury. I hope this helps!

The symptoms are withdrawals from Cymbalta, no drug should ever be stopped in that fashion!!! Ever!!! Contact your regular MD and see if they will prescribe something to help you off this withdraw, without getting you hooked on another drug. I know they are some, just watch the interaction with your current meds.I have gone through many withdrawals from so many different drugs, and even when the doctor is helping you slowly lower your doseage you still get the symtoms as you describe but not nearly as bad. Sorry to hear you feel so bad, I have been there way too many times...

I had a two level spinal fusion in June of 07. I go to a pain mgnt. doctor and have been prescribed various opiods and the Neurotin and Lyrica. Have been taking the Neurotin 300 mg 3x daily for about 6 months. I had a intrathecal pain pump installed in June of 08. That has helped tremendously. In response to the man asking about withdrawls from antidepressants. I have experienced that. What you described is exactly a response from stopping the medication abrubtly (feeling as if things are not real, sweating, wierd dreams, being hot or cold, nauseu and headaches). So many doctors deny this withdrawl occurs and are not educated about it. It eventually goes away, but takes several weeks. Hang in there. People who suffer from chronic pain are many times depressed and benefit from antidepressants. Make sure the doctor informs you of the possible withdrawls from abruptly stopping the medication.

The only side effect that I can figure is a slight dizziness at times. If I miss a dose and discover it over half way and wait until the next dose, I can tell when the time comes for another dose because the old brain says that there is pain in the feet and lower legs, which of course there isn't, but the brain says there is (false information from the surviving neurons.) I wish I could bee off this stuff but it is worth the option of nothing. Thank you Veterans Administration for helping this disabled veteran, Otherwise this medication would be financially out of reach!

Question/Comment:
I have been taking Gabapentin for about six months now for treatment of nerve pain associated with Sjogrens Syndrome. I take 800 mg per day, and am feeling much better since I started taking it. With it, I am able to carry on a somewhat normal life. Without the medication, I can barely move due to the all over body pain I feel. It has been a blessing from God to have been prescribed this medication.
