Question/Comment:

does gabapentin work as good as oxycodone for pain?

40 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Oxycodone and gabapentin alleviate pain by very different methods. They can both be effective for certain conditions depending on a patient's response and tolerance to each medication. You should discuss these treatments with your doctor and review the advantages for your medical condition(s).

Question/Comment:

I'm 47 and I have rsd in my right leg, when I take neurontin I can't even function. It keeps the pain down but there's no quality of life if you can't function. I've only been on it for 2 weeks. How long before the body adjusts to it? My husband is very concerned about this.

48 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

The length of time for your body to adjust can vary depending on your condition and your body. It can take from weeks to a couple months. If you do not begin to see improvement though, make an appointment with your physician to see if a dose adjustment could help or if there is a different medication that could help you.

Question/Comment:

I've been on Neurontin at 300mg X3 since '91. I have experienced all the side effects to one degree or another. Even though this is an inconvenience, I feel the benefits far out-weigh the negatives. Like all medications, it is wise to keep a watch for any changes. I'm personally against using Ibuprofen for pain relief as I have experienced stomach ulcers as a negative side effect.

Is their anyone who experiences feeling off balance when they walk. I take 600 mg twice daily of Neurontin. I take this medication because I have had 3 back surgeries and the last with rods and screws. I have burning in my legs where I can't stand any clothing touching. This medication does work. I have been taking it for about 2 years. I used to take 600 mg three times a day but was able to cut back. I also have insomnia. I have asked my family doctor but she says no to both of the above symptoms.
Thank you

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking 1200mg 3 times a day for about a month now. It does cause dizziness, it is listed in the side effects. When I had started the medication it took 2 weeks to get me up to optimal dosing and during that time I did not drive, take stairs, or really do much at all. I would wake up with my eyes crossing and giving me double vision. But, the effects went away after that time period. I have spinal neuropathy and Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, TMJ, and many other syndromes.

Question/Comment:

I've been on 600mg 3-4 x's daily. Trying to titrate off. lost insurance and had to go off 'cold turkey.' I've been having severe panic attacks. so, the lack of taking it is giving me these affects. Three factors affect brain chemistry normality: serotonin, nor-epinephrine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) which Gabapentin affects. Since I am no longer taking Gabapentin, I may have an imbalance. Anyone experience this?

54 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

when i tried to go off of the neurontin, i had a hard time sleeping and was restless. i took simple ibuprophen and i was able to sleep. i also skipped a day or two in between doses and tried to take the lowest dose possible from the get go. i also want ot mention that in my research, one of the natural ingredients mentioned in place of neurontin therapy was vitamin B-12.

Question/Comment:

I am a 49 year old male with RSD my doctor has me on 600 mg of gabapentin 4 times a day along with Hydrocodone 5mg-500mg-tab that I also take every 4-hrs a day and was also on a Phentenol patch at the same time. I dident even know who I was or any wone that came to see me I had to have 24 hr care has any one else taken this amount of these meds if so how has it affected you. I have been taken off of the Phentenol patch but remain on the same doses of the other meds.

Answer/Reply:

I have severe burning pain in my spine, from nerves being pinched from degenerative joint disease, in my spine.
I was put on Darvocet, which did nothing to stop the pain, but it did make me dizzy. I cried day in and day out because of pain. I went to see a Pain Clinic by recomendation of my x-husband, and they prescribed Gabapentin, 300 mg, 3x's a day + a 300 mg at bedtime, along with Nortriptyline at bedtime.
Its a miracle pill! No more crying. I still feel the burning, but Oxycodone for the severe pain, (I don't take it every 4-hours, I only take it when I'm in severe pain, so I don't get addicted to it...it is a hard core medicine.) Try to wean off of the Oxy. Then just take as needed for severe pain. If you don't need nerve pain medicines, then ask your dr about taking something else. That's my opinion.

Question/Comment:

Has anyone had anorgasmia, loss of libido with this drug. I have done a lot of research and it is clearly a side effect. My paresthesia has gotten better since adding acupuncture. I am now on 900 mg. daily and want to titrate off it. The other day I tried to not be on it and the burning, stabbing sensation came back. Does anyone know of any medication to help with neuropathy that does not have sexual side effects.I also tried Lyrica and since it is basically the same chemical structure as gabapentin it caused the same thing. I am going nuts I am a sexual person and have been very depressed over this. Has anyone tried trileptal or have any success with medications for this. I notice that Trileptal has few sexual side effects.

46 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Yes, I also experienced loss of libido on Neurontin. I take three 100 mg during the day (about 4-6 hrs apart...and 300 mg at bedtime. I tried 300 mg in the mornings and experienced severe uncordination...so my Dr. changed it to 100 mg thee times during the day. That took care of the uncordination...and the libido problem seems better if I wait to take the medication until after sexual activity. Not only does the Neurontin help the burning/stabbing pain...but it also helps control the intense pain that feels like stone bruises all over the bottom of both feet.

Question/Comment:

I have been suffering from Phantom pain for almost 60 years because of an amputation of my right leg. This happens on a daily basis. But, it still occurs even while I'm on Gabapentin. I usually take one a day. I want to stop taking it. So, is there anything else that I can replace it with, without getting the side effects? 72 year old female

73 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking 300 mg Gabapentin morning and night for about 5 years.
I have no ill feelings from it and it helps my back and neck pain. I would not want to be without it.

83 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

There are other medications that could be used to help with your pain. One newer medication is Lyrica. It does have side effects, but it may work better for you. You should discuss your options with your physician to see what the best choice is for your treatment.

Question/Comment:

I took my first dose of gabapentin last night. When I woke up this morning I felt terrible. I was woozy, nauseous, and had terrible leg cramps. This medicine made me feel very ill. It took about 12 hours for my head to clear up.

66 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Consider taking a smaller dosage and then building up as your body adjusts to the medication. I did that with gabapentin and was successful. Of course, everyone's body is different in how it accepts and reacts to medications.

Question/Comment:

I have Endometriosis & I've been told by 3 doctors that I need to have a full hystericatomy. This is impossible for me to do since I work a full time job, married, 3 children and a caregiver to my father. My OBGYN wouldn't give me anything to help with the pain - SHE even told me to "suck it up or have the surgery". I was lucky enough to get into a medication study for Endometriosis. At the end of the study I asked the doctor are there medications on the market to help Endometriosis pain and he suggested Gabapentin. I went to my primary doctor, who was fully aware of the study I was in and he received all the test results from the study, discussed this with him and he prescribed Gabapentin about 6 months ago and it HELPS!!! Please tell anyone you know that's suffering from Endometriosis pain to ask their doctor for Gabapentin.
As a side note... The medication I took for the Endometriosis Study worked even better than the Gabapentin so there's HOPE for those of us suffering from this and can't have surgery done for whatever reasons.

49 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

You are right. It will in the beginning but will disapate over time. I tried the Cymbalta+ Neurotin and it was no where near as effective at teh Wellbutrin XR 150 mg + 200 mg Neurotin + 20 mg of flexerell. I took the Wellbutrin in the morning and the others at night. It has something to do with the combination of the three. if you take two and not the other the effect is not there. I had a big turn around on this. When my Dr. tried the cmbalta it was like i was taking nothing. Some get the same effect with substatuting Effexor for the wellbutrin but the side effects for it were to much for me and its more expensive. Don't give up. Hang in there. You will find what works for you. Good luck.

Question/Comment:

I was taking Lisinopril for blood pressure and had been taking it for about 10 years along with a number of other meds. I also had eaten some licquorice candy on a friday. That evening, I started feeling dizzy and fell so I called my daughter in law to take me to the er. It took her about an hour to get to me and when I arrived there, I was feeling very scared and strange.
I remember talking to the Doctor and they admitted me and my tongue started swelling so they did something to put me out and did inibation which is a big tube down to my stomache and another smaller tube in my nose. I was out for several 4 or 5 days before they brought me out of it by taking the tube out of which is I couldn't have coughed they said I would have died. The doctors said I had an allergic reaction to my Lisinopril and that I could no longer take it or any drugs in that class. No drugs that end in Pril or mao inhibitors.. That was the 3rd of April and I came home the day before Easter Sunday. I have been feeling as though things are not exactly right ever since and my throat and voce are not the same since then. Do you or anyone have any info on this because they said it had been happening to people with the lisinopril. and was told not to eat any more licorice either. My cardiologist said very few people live through that procedure. I am truly lucky to be here today because I could have died anyway.

63 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

It sounds like you experienced a rare but serious reaction to lisinopril called angioedema. Symptoms of angioedema include swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes; hoarseness; and difficulty breathing or swallowing. It may take a while for people to recover from intubation, and people often feel hoarse or have a change in their voice once the tube is removed. However, if you are still experiencing these symptoms, you may want to follow up with your doctor to make sure something else is not causing these symptoms.

In general, it is best to avoid both licorice and blood pressure medications ending in "pril." It's difficult to tell if licorice contributed to your reaction as well.

Question/Comment:

I love3 this medication, I have a bulging disc in my back and the pain radiates down my right leg to settle in my calf. I have had 2 injection of Toradol that did not work as well as Gabapentin. It targets the nerves in my back wonderfully and I have had no side effects.

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking Gabapentin in combination with Flexeril and Vicoprofen, for sciatica and spinal stenosis, until recently without incident. All of a sudden, I have taken two serious falls in the last month, I wondered if it was my meds...I have decided to take the three meds at seperate times to see if one was causing the problem. The Gabapentin seems to be the problem-the capsules are tan and brown-the strength from one capsule to the next seems to be very inconsistent-some are much stronger than they should be! I think this should be reported to someone, but I am not sure who.Has anyone else experienced this? Who would I report this to?

Hi
Ive been taking Gabapentin for a year now.I have been taking Simvastatin and Gemfilbrozil for a couple of years now. I have been taking Gemfibrozil for 2 years now. recently I have been having **serious Foot problems all of a sudden, with bad curculation and pain recently, and also breathing problems.**I don't know if anyone else has this problem. It also might be caused by all my medications mixed or because I also have a bulged disc which is damaging my back, side and leg. If someone else has these foot probblem without haveing other problems, please replay or email me at khaney46@yahoo.com. I am really conserned about all my health issues, and will be working to get them corrected soon. Thank You Ken

49 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Good for you for working to get your health issues corrected. Make sure that iGuard, your pharmacy and your physicians all have a complete record of the medications you are taking. Less than 1% of iGuard members report numbness or tingling while taking gabapentin. Overall, gabapentin is taken to relieve numbness and tingling, otherwise called, "peripheral neuropathy." Gemfibrozil, simvastatin have a chance of interacting with each other, but the interaction causes pain that is different than what you are describing. There are no interactions between gabapentin and gemfibrozil or simvastatin. Make an appointment with your physician as soon as possible to discuss your symptoms, especially the breathing problems.

Question/Comment:

RE: Neurontin. I have discussed this with my primary doctor yet, but, as the temperature reaches above 100`F, I have noticed a pattern of suicidality, sleeplessness for about 24 hours at times and seldom with sleep of more than three hours per night, and the restlessness of all my limbs, not just my legs. I also notice that I wake up with completely numb arms and hands when I do get "some" sleep. I wonder if these are common symptoms of the combination of Neurontin and Dilantin or some other health issue.

46 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

There has been one report of increased phenytoin levels in a patient also receiving Neurontin. Patients who are taking phenytoin and who start taking Neuronin or who change their dose of Neurontin should have their dose/level of phenytoin monitored.

Neurontin can cause restlessness and numbness. In December 2008, the FDA required that manufacturers of Dilantin, Neurotnin, and other medications used to treat epilepsy and seizures to change the label for these medications to include a warning that the use of these medications increases the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (suicidality). This new warning includes all antiepileptic drugs including those used to treat epilepsy as well as depression, bipolar disease, migraines, and other conditions.

Please make an appointment with your physician as soon as possible to discuss the severity of your symptoms. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, the following national suicide hotlines are available in the U.S. to help you: 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) and 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)

Answer/Reply:

Since both are anti-convulsion medications, which I, too was on for several months after a ruptured brain aneurysm (bleeding stroke). I never could seem to shake the fog, the doctor took me off of the Dilantin. I have continued the Neurontin @ 900 mg/day since. I get great sleep (of course my memory foam pillow has a lot to do with that :) but, the feeling of lightening shooting out of my left hand fingertips has just about stopped. I do find that my RLS is much better and I don't have as many muscle spasms in my shoulder.

46 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I too take Neurontin and suffer the same symptoms.

52 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

If you are still experiencing these symptoms, please contact your doctor immediately as they will want to evaluate you to address or reverse these symptoms. The symptoms may be cause for you to change medications. You should discuss this with your doctor - do not make any changes to your medication until you have spoken to your physician.

Im understanding its the nervous system and would love to know is it the gaba doing it, seems funny that it started when i went off my morphine.

38 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

You might want to check into Fibromyalgia online and see if it fits. If so, check with your doctor. It is a condition caused by over active nerve endings. Either the accident or the meds may have stimulated the nerves to a point that they can not or can not remember how to slow down to a normal state. If it is permanent, you may have to go back on medication for this problem. If your primary care doctor doesn't help, get a second opinion. If you know something is wrong with your body and your doctor doesn't take you seriously, always check with another doctor before ignoring your own feelings. Doctors are people too and capable of mistakes.

60 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

it is possible that your injury might have become Fibromyalgia. It is believed to be a nerve related syndrome that, for some people, can make even light touch very uncomfortable.

52 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I had an accident in Jan, 2006 - broke both my arms, both bones, compound fractures and severed the nerves in my left wrist, rendering my left hand useless - unable to move it at all. Miraculously, after about 9 months (physical therapy did not help and EEG's of left wrist confirmed I would never use my hand again)........my left index finger started to move, and the others followed. Dr. started me on Neurontin as I had shooting pains in my left arm, wrist and hand. I am still on it - 1200 mg/da and even reducing it a little makes the pains return. I am on other meds as well, and have had no trouble combining klonopin, neurontin, prozac and other pain meds for recent surgery. The benefit from the Neurontin is wonderful...best of luck to you!

Question/Comment:

12 days ago I got an epidural steroid injection in my spine. I dropped my medication from 2x300mg 3x per day to 2 x300mg to x per day as well as 1/2 hyrdrocodone 2x per day and omeprazole 2x per day. I have had some significant reduction in pain but what concerns me is that I have lost 12 pounds in 12 days. Yes my apetite has decrease but not enough for that and my activity rate is the same. My right leg sometimes loses control after sitting in certain posititions for a long period of time. It only last for a step or two and then it's fine. Any ideas?

43 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Gabapentin can cause weight gain with continued use. Decreasing your dose can cause weight loss to start. While epidural steroid injections are shown to help reduce pain, they can cause other side effects, such as the numbness/loss of control in your leg. Make an appointment with your physician to discuss your weight loss and the loss of control in your leg.

Question/Comment:

I have been on neurotin 300mg three times a day and 600mg at bed time for a month now I also have been on oxycontin 30mg twice a day and it was just incresed to 40mg twice a day. has any one noticed a funny taste in your mouth, or some of your food's and or some of the things that you drink taste funny. because I have and im not sure why or what to do about it. its been like that for the last month for me. if any one has any input on this please let me know thanks.

53 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Neurontin does not have any reports of metallic taste in the mouth or other changes in taste. Less than 1% of iGuard members report dryness of the mouth or thirst while taking Neurontin though. OxyContin also does not have a metallic taste reported as a side effect. However, OxyContin can causes dry mouth. The extra dry mouth could be contributing to your changes in taste. If your changes in taste are bothersome or worsen, please follow up with your doctor.

Question/Comment:

i have been taking gabapentin for 2 years to treat severe reflex sympathetic dystrophy in my right lower leg and foot, and for severe lumbar disc herniation pain. my dose has been slowly raised as my pain increases. i now take 800 mg three times a day, plus other pain meds. i have gained about 20 lbs as the dose increases, around the belly area, and diet and exercise has no effect on losing the weight. could this be the gabapentin ? how do i lose the weight without stopping the medication - i trully helps my pain. i am a 41 yr old female

41 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Among iGuard members, 5% report weight gain while taking Neurontin. The chance of weight gain increases as the dose increases. Diet and exercise are still the recommended ways to lose weight. Strict calorie control under the supervision of your doctor or nutritionist will have the best long-term benefits. It may take a while to start seeing the change though. If you continue to gain weight or not lose weight, make an appointment with your doctor to see about changing medications. You may want to ask your doctor to refer you to a program that will help you with your diet and exercise.
