Question/Comment:
Taking 10 mg/day of Norvasc along with 40 mg/day Lisinipril for hypertension. I lost 30 pounds via diet and exercise chages to my lifestyle. The only side effect was diziness when bending over (head below heart), but this only lasted a few weeks. Now there are no dizzy events during exercise and other times.

I have been on norvasc for 6 months and had taken it before. As before I get so extremely fatigued taking it. I can barely get thru the day without laying down a couple of times to rest or take a nap. I was taking it in the afternoon but I was so restless at bedtime, now I take it at noon and I sleep better at night. But the fatigue is really draining.

Question/Comment:
Is anyone taking or have taken Metoprolol and Norvasc together? I am having some side effects that it seems my doctor is ignoring. I never liked the idea of taking Norvasc because when I started it was a new drug but I never had any real problems (except edema). Now that I have started on Metoprolol, I have dizziness, tiredness, rapid heartbeats, and chest pain. I've only taken Metoprolol for about a month but I've been on Norvasc for about three years. Although I was taking Diovan, Norvasc, and Metoprolol, my pressure was still high and the swelling in my legs was terrible. Since starting on Lasix, the swelling is gone and the pressure has lowered a little, but the dizziness, etc is not going away.

I have been on both Norvasc & Metoprolol for several years now. I too have an ongoing tiredness that sleep will not cure. I have spoken to doctors about it and because my bp has been good they say I`m OK. The other problems I have not encountered. I think Doctors. spend too much time listening to the drug company salesmen and do not look at the real problem, the patient. Too many drugs are not properly tested before they get released. Thats why I think the FDA should be run on the governments money and not the drug makers.

Question/Comment:
Since being on a blood pressure med, negative symptoms have slowly progressed over the past 3 1/2 months. I don't think it is worth taking to feel this poorly.
I began to suffer from mental confusion, blurred vision, forgetfulness, exhaustion, hopelessness, lack of focus, motivation, exrtreme pain in my legs, feet, a sense of trapped electricity in my feet that felt like lightening bolts electocuting my toes and soles of my feet. I began to see deep indents in my upper calves just below my knees when I wore wool knee socks, and never realized it was edema, at first. I have suffered numbness in both shoulders radiating down my arms and into my fingertips. I began to have an excruciating itch on my back that was so bad, I couldn't think straight. Al my focus was on the stinging and unbearable itch; when it began to sbside from tearing at my skin with a back scratcher, I was exhausted, I would fall asleep. I have had trouble speaking and remembering words, facts, dates, and simple things.
I have been so cloudy in my thinking I did not pay bills or take care of things. I shut the oil burner off to save money on oil, but didn't realize the chimney and stack were completely clogged with solidified creosote, and no smoke was going up the chimney. I had taken molding off the floor in the hallway that leads to my daughter's bedroom and mine which left big 4 inch openings into the basement where all the backed up smoke was accumulating. We could have died from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to an oil burner man who came as an act of charity when he learned I had no heat on in 9 degrees. I hurt my lower back and have been unemployed since June 2008. How much has the herniated disc played on my leg pains, the trapped energy in my lower extremities, my lack of mobiity, depression, anxiety, fears?
My condition was getting so severe, I could not even rationalize my symptoms, I just fell victim to them and would sit and cover up with blankets to deal with the cold rather than get the help I needed. The help required gathering papers and bills and standing on cold lines at D.S.S. and I just couldn't function enough to do it. I have been off the F*&^% medication since February 12th when I had to get my daughter prepared for a senior high school trip. I decided to stay off the medication while she was gone during a winter recess so she wouldn't see me going through whatever withdrawals it might have. Today is February 24th and I am able to write this letter and begin to organize some papers to go to Social Services. It will take me a few days to organize bills because for the past 3 months I have sank deeper into a fog. OMG....never again can I take these pills. Linda

You might want to check, because one of the Norvasc generic brands was recalled because of lack of control on monitoring how much was in the pills? Some more than and probably some less than what you were supposed to get?

I too had problems with the generic brand of Norvasc. I got severe leg cramps at night, and rsl. I too had to stop taking the generic. I am on regular Norvasc, and have minimal problems with it. Once in a while, I will still get a slight leg cramp, but it goes away almost immediatley. I am also only on 5mgs., so that may account for the lower side-effects. Sincerely, Kathy

I was on Norvasc and Diovan and they worked well to keep my blood pressure down even though they made me drowsy about an hour after taking them. This lasted for about 2-3 weeks. I got a new doctor who changed the meds to the generic Norvasc which is Amlodipine and also changed the Diovan to Losartan. When I first tooks these meds together they gave me a headache everyday for almost a month. The headaches have almost gone but they don't work as well in keeping my pressure down. I would like to go back to but the insurance only covers what it covers so here I am. I also take Lasix and aspirin.

Answer/Reply:
Muscle cramps can be from dehydration. It could also be restless legs syndrome ... which can be painful, but I think it's more common to women. But if the water doesn't help, try drinking tonic water... it has Quinine in it and that's really good for leg cramps. I used to take prescription strength Quinine before they took it off the market. What's in the tonic water isn't much.
Potassium is good ... also Magnesium Calcium (together) is good. Mag's good for everything and the Calcium's a 'helper'.

I also suffer from occasional leg cramps and used to take a product called Q-Vel which was basically a quinine pill. It helped until the government ordered it off the market. Hey, it worked and was cheap and the major drug outfits couldn't get a patent, of course, it had to come off the market. I recently found in a health food store a product for leg cramps made by Hyland that costs 9.00 for 100 pills and it very similar to the old Q-Vel and it works. Try your favorite health food store.

Please see a nephrologist about the bun and creatinine, I ahve been on norvasc for at least 7 years, and I have end stage renal failure , my nephrologist keeps me on the norvasc for my blood pressure., it may be that impending kidney problems may have caused your blood pressure problems, the damage is usually already begun way before it shows up on your lab reports.

Mr. Fowler are you on Lipitor. I am on Crestor for cholesterol. That seems to be causing what I call cramps, pain in my hands, legs and back. They get so bad they draw up my hands. I just started taking norvasc on 9/15/08 and I am having trouble with my speech and trying to just think normally. Words get twisted and don't come out right and I am real tired. What I am trying to say is that it might not be any of the blood pressure medicine because I am on lisinopril and have done fine except my blood pressure is still on the high side. You might check you cholesterol medicine first to see if that is what is doing it. My husband was on Lipitor and had the leg cramps and in the feet and once he was taken off he is doing so much better. Hope this helps.

Thank God for these internet sites. By sharing your situation and the viewing the feedback, it helps me to look at my problem a little better. I am taking Micardis HCT (80 mg/25 mg), Tricor 145mg, and I just recently discontinued taking Amlodipine 5 mg, a decision I made. I have throbbing pain in my left hand at the base of my finger next to the thumb. Also pain in my left foot around the in step. (I dropped a 2 1/2 pound weight on my foot a year ago and did not use my referral for a podiatrist visit.) I have taken Norvasc in the past and can't remember why I discontinued it. I was not under the care of my present internal medicine doctor when Norvasc was initially prescribed. Looking at your experience and the responses maybe it's the Tricor with the combination of Amlodipine. I don't know. Sometimes I don't know what would be right for me. I need to drop 30lbs and then look to get off of these medicines altogether. I am 64 years old (until Dec 2) and maybe all these discomforts are to be expected. I would like to hear from others on this. Thanks, bryants52002@yahoo.com.
