Global Patient Feedback for Ambien (Zolpidem) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I take Ambien CR 12.5mg for at least 5 years now for severe insomnia and parasomnal abnormalities. Without the medicaton I would not be able to sleep. I have been hospitalized twice for going without sleep over 10 days. You can actually die from lack of sleep as your body will stop working correctly and will actually shut down. I have had no side effects from taking this medication but once in awhile will be very sleepy the next day and feel hungover but that is rare. I know some people cn not take the medication longterm but I have to for my own health. I have even gone to several sleep specialists to try different things for my severe insomnia but they all come to conclusion that this is the best medication for me at this time. I am hoping to get into insomnia study soon with a new drug to see if it will help. I take one day a t a time an do what I need to keep myself healthy.

I also forgot to mention the generic name for Ambien CR is Zolpidem but it also the same name for regular Ambien. The only thing tough the generic form is not in the Controlled released and not equivalent to Ambien CR. It is just regular Ambien. I hope they will fix misnomer on the site so people will know the difference.

You do not list RLS on your list of conditions. I use Ambien partially for RLS as well as common
insomnia. Also there are several vitamins that I use 3 to 4 times a week rather than every day. I would like to see you have a way of recording our dosage amount as well as simply the names of the drugs.

Answer/Reply:
I went to a convention of Hardvard doctors. They said, "RLS is most frequently from anemia," or low blood oxygen. Anemia causes low blood oxygen; tiredness, feeling the need to move legs b/c low oxygen. Moving legs is like an aerobic exercise. If you have sleep apnea, you can have insomnia and RLS. Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing during the night. Heavy snorers, and over-weight people have sleep apnea more often. They can also have heartburn symptoms.

I take a 1/4 of the tab. every night, and have for 4 years. I don't want to take it any more. I have been told two stories. One is there is no problem with with-drawels, and the other that it is very hard to get off of. Can anyone tell me from experence what is the the right story. I have a very hard time getting to sleep. Some times up all night.

Answer/Reply:
I have taken Ambien for at least 10 years. I take 1/2 of a tablet as needed. I noticed that if I take it more than 5 or 6 days straight, I will start to feel really tired and sluggish. I make it a point to use it as little as possible. I have noticed that the longer I take it the harder it is to get off of. I try to reduce the dose by taking a 1/4 tablet end eventually none when I feel like I have been taking it too long (1 week or so). I bet that your body is used to it that you need a larger dose in order to fall asleep. I would try to get off of it and use it only on occasion.
The doctor prescribed it for me after I went about 4 straight days/nights with no sleep. In my case, it becomes a mental thing for me if I don't sleep one night. Having Ambien on hand gives me that "piece of mind" knowing that I have a "back up" just in case I have problems. I notice that I have problems sleeping when my hormones start fluxuating. (I am 47). I hear that sleeplessness is even more of a problem as you get older (I am not looking forward to that). I am not willing to take it every day.
Good luck.

Your experience is very closely matched to mine. I try not to use it more than a couple of times a week. But when 2-3 AM rolls around I feel compelled. Cutting a 10 Mg pill in two usually will do the job. I find the references to depression of interest as some days I can feel pretty low. I will note the frequency of Ambien use and depressed feelings.
Thank you.

I am also a frequent Ambien user. I recently found an amino acid supplement that works for me just as well as Ambien. It is L-Theanine. It is used as an aide for "focus" issues but I accidentally found out that it was also a great sleep aide. My husband also uses it for sleep and it also works great for him.

I have taken Ambien for 10 years now, under the same doctors care. I was on 20 mg at bedtime. Many terrible things have happened to me after taking the RX. i.e.; sleep eating, sleep driving, phone calls I had no recollection of, but most recently it almost cost me my life. Twice now I have overdosed on this RX, totally by accident as I would never want to end my life. We are a very close family, with 4 children and11 grandchildren, and so much to love and live for. This RX in my opinion needs to come off the market. I would be interested to know if others have experienced the same problem. Thank you. Beverlyrck1@embarqmail.com

I begin taking this medication 10 years ago. It was given to me due to me not sleeping for days. I was given .5mg nightly and currently taking 10mg. Being a counselor I knew that I needed to work on sleeping without this nightly medication because I want to avoid the side effects. I have heard of individuals making complaints of sleep walking and driving. I also know of individuals becoming addicted. I have had no side effects but I have had a good night sleep especially during the period of time when I could not sleep. Currently I am taking it 2-3 times a month. I have employed other means of getting to sleep which would not have worked if I had not started taking something to help me through the rough spots.

I don't believe Ambien should be taken off the market but that you should consider taking yourself off Ambien. Ten years and 20 mg is much too long and much too high a dose. My husband takes 5 mg once or twice a week when he has had a restless night. If he takes 10 mg, he has trouble with balance in about 15 mins after taking it. In other words, it makes him "drunk", Therefore, we are very careful that he goes straight to bed. Please talk to your doctor about changing your meds.

I have a question for both of you. Have you formally seen a Board Certified Sleep Specialist? If not there be be othe issues causing the "restless sleep", on varoius nights. It seems, or at least in my situation, the best thing I could have done was to consult with my Medical Director, and just by luck happened to a Board Certified Sleep Specialist. Thank God, he recommended an in lab attended sleep study. The last thing I needed was Ambien, which I was prescribed by my Primary Care Doc. Yea, I was doing the eating thing, the driving thing, as well as the three hour phone cons in the middle of the night. Now, I am not saying this may happen to either of you, but I feel very strongly about be properly diagnosed. If you have congrats to both of you. Take Care,

I have never had that experience(s). Why would you take this large of a dose? What doctor would refill a prescription if you had actually overdosed? Have you considered speaking with a psychiatrist, possibly try another medication if you have insomnia for a period longer than 2 months. If under a lot of stress this medication can cause some interactions with some antidepressants, not as likely with antipsychotics. Try to get to the root of your insomnia, this medication is a godsend for lots of people, if its not for you, stop taking it.

So let me get this straight; you think the drug should come off the market because you have accidently over dosed twice, and you experience terrible side effects in the TEN YEARS that
you've been taking it. I've got a better idea: STOP TAKING IT!!!! and let the people who don't have terrible side effects, and don't keep accidently over-dosing keep on using it.

I think you need to talk to another doctor. I know several people on this medication, and NONE of us take more than 10 mg. I've been on this drug for years and plan to ween myself off of it once I'm through menopause (insomnia during menopause is why I started). I have had no problems with Ambien, but I did have with Ambien CR. I only took it for a few days.

I have taken this med-the CR 12.5 mg version now-for about 15 years. After spending so many sleepless nights, this has been WONDERFUL! Yes, it says on the package that it may cause those problems and if it does for you, then don't take it. But don't punish everyone like me who needs it to sleep. P.S. None of the other meds, Rx or OTC have EVER helped me. I probably am 'dependent' on it, but I wouldn't call it an addiction. I could stop it but I don't want to. Why, when I sleep well with it?

haven't been taking Ambien for nearly as long as you - probably about 2-3 years. I am prescribed 10 mg but I cut them in half and only take 5 mg. I only take them Sunday thru Thursday as I sleep well on the weekends. The only real problem I've had, and not all the time, is vivid dreams. I have walked in my sleep one time (my daughter told me this) but thankfully have not had the sleep eating, driving, etc., and have not overdosed on the pills. If it weren't for Ambien I would be tossing and turning all night long. I am not a medical professional but maybe your dose is too high. I am thankful for the sleep I get from Ambien.

I began taking Ambien 10mg three years ago. I've never increased my dose and take it 15 min. w/in going to bed. So far, I haven't had any issues or problems since taking it. It clearly states on the prescription leaflet given at the time of receiving the medication the side effects. You've been taking it too long and though it may be a psychological addiction, you need to find something less harmful...like maybe benedryl or otc sleep aids. If I run out of Ambien, I never panic I just take something otc which seems to work fine. My reason for taking it is psychological, but definately not harmful to me....

I have severe PTSD from long term ongoing abuse. I have taken ambien for the past 4 years or so but it has been only when I have needed it. The medication is a good med as long as you are on a normal dose and it is not taken everynight. This medication was never meant to be used for high doses or super long periods of time. It sounds like you had a scary experience but what you don't mention is how many did you take to overdose? I don't believe that two tablets would do that. I would definitely talk to your doctor and go to a 10 mg dose and use it when its most needed. I have had problems remembering if I had taken my meds before, I use a week long med box that i load at the beginning of everyweek. This helps me know if I have taken my dose. I don't believe for a second that Ambien CR should be taken off the market. What works for most people should be used and if it doesn't for you then like others have said, I would discontinue it or go on a short acting med like Sonata. It helps you fall asleep but not stay asleep.

I feel it should not be taken off the market as well. Without this medication I would be a walking corpse. If you have overdosed accidentally at night have your spouse or another person in the family lock it up so that you can not get ahold of it at night and I also too would highly reccommend a comprehensive sleep study. I have had three all by leading experts in their fields and they have all come to the same conclusion that for me this is best the medication at the time. For me I almost died from lack of sleep by not sleeping in over ten days. I have tried many things over the years but the chronic insomnia and parsomnal abnormalities have to be treated some way and this is the way the experts have agreed upon. I have gone as far as getting hypoallerginic bedding that is made from organic material and bedding is organis as well. I have a air purifier and also do yoga and relaxation technique at night and have also altered my sleeping hygein to more condusive of relaxation and sleep. I also find lavender to very soothing as well and have an ionizer with lavender essential oils in it.

I am a 54 yrs.old female & have been on Ambien for 9 yrs. mainly because of severe chronic pain. I now have 3 Felony charges against me because of drinking & driving. I take my rx at 9:30 pm & think I go to sleep. Mind you I have severe night blindness & can't see at night to drive. I have had 2 minor accidents (thank God nobody has been hurt) that have always occured after midnight. My license has obviously been taken away & I rarely consume alcohol. I think that my subconsious or dreams inspire me to do these things. Honestly, I DO NOT KNOW. One of the times I was sent to jail, I was 'cold turkeyed' off of the Ambien & I can truly say that I did not sleep any more than 2-3 hrs. total in a whole week. However, my body is so addicted to this drug that I can't even take a nap during the day. It seems as though my system will NOT rest unless the Ambien is in by body. I have a very difficult time distinguishing dreams from reality on a daily basis. It sucks. Please respond to me w/your issues. Thanks

I started on the ambien 3 months ago for insomnia due to 3 degenerated discs in my back. The first week was scary because I could not remember anything once it started to work. My husband told me that I would grab his arm every night. When he would turn on the light to see what was wrong, he said I would be sitting up in bed with my eyes open but they were glazed over. I would sit like this for 10 minutes then lay back down and go to sleep. Thank God by the second week this reaction stopped and now I fall asleep without incident. I do still suffer very minor loss of memory of some activities of the night before but it's very very minor. 38 female

My only problem with the Ambien is that it takes longer and longer for me to fall asleep. When I first started taking Ambien 10 mg, I would fall asleep almost immediately and sleep the night through. Now I take it and sleep for several hours and awaken in the wee hours of the morning and can not go back to sleep. If I take another to go back to sleep, I can not get up in the morning. If I force myself to get up at a certain time, I am groggy all day. If I try not to take the Ambien once in awhile, I am up all night. I feel that I am addicted. Be very careful with this drug.

I have been on this medication for awhile now at least 2 years, I haven't had any side effects except when I take it I need to go to bed at least 30 minutes after I take it. I've had trouble sleeping all my life, and also am taking other meds for varies reasons. I take trazadone and that helps me sleep as well, not as well as when I use the ambien. As far as I can tell the only side effect is really strange dreams. Also I sleep to long during the morning when I take it, so therefore I just take it when I need it the most. I can't see how anyone can o.d. on this or anything else if your taking it properly. No it shouldn't be taking off the maket. Just watch what your doing. I am 52 years old and I also am a recovering alcoholic and drug user so I think I would know alittle something about side effects and drugs.

I have been taking Ambien 10mg for 3 years now, ever since the liver xplant. I am dignosed with chronic Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and was treated with Interferon and Ribaviron. One of the treatment's side effects is insomnia. The Ambien works very well for me. I have not had any trouble with "OD"s but you know, everyone is different. I, too have a history of drug abuse (Recovering Dead Head) and so I know how a real OD works. I have learned through chronic liver failure and recovery that people's reaction to diseases and medications are different.

Ambien 10mg is only meant to be taken ONCE an evening. If you take a SECOND pill in the same evening, you will run out of pills at the end of the month. It is a controlled substance, your doctor should prescribe only "one pill at bedtime". Ambien CR is only 12.5mg max., Not 20mg. If you "sleep several hours and awaken in the wee hours of the morning and can not go back to sleep"; you are taking Ambien Too Early in the evening. Ambien will not make you sleep 12 hours a night. "Several hours" (6-8 hours) of sleep a night is enough sleep. If you try to get your 7 hours of sleep too early during daylight hours, your brain's circadian rhythm is fighting Your sleep schedule. If you sleep with the light, or TV on, your brain cannot make melatonin (your brain's natural sleep hormone) !! Take your Ambien Later. Yes, this can be a dangerous drug. Patients have halllucinated, gotten lost in front yard, and tried to kill self.

I hope you try another sleep aid, only you know your body. I take 1/2 a 10mg pill, the 5mg pill seems to be too weak (I don't know why, but my script lasts longer this way). I LOVE my Ambien. I too had some weird issues at first, which is why the dosage was reduced and I have been fine ever since (8 years now). So I agree - if something doesn't work for you - don't take it - but don't suggest no one else should.

I have had a sleep dis-order for over 13 years...During this time, i have been prescribed numerous medications and combinations of medications together...Nothing ever really seemed to work for me, the most sleep i could obtain was, approx., 3-4 hours at a time.. Most days, due to the heavy medications, i was listless, tired and draggy...
About 1 1/2 years ago i began seeing a different doctor and he prescribed Ambien, first at the lower dosage then increasing it to 12.5 nightly...I now can sleep up-to 6 to 7 hours, altho, i do wake up during this time, getting back to sleep is no longer a problem.
I feel MUCH better with the sleep pattern i have now, my days are better, i am not tired during the day and do not have that druggy feeling anymore. I'm happier during the day and with the better sleep i get, i'm sure i am not so crabby...

Question/Comment:
In a recent hospital stay, I was given Ambian (don't know if it was CR or not) and has sleepwalking issues. Apparently, I would sleepwalk and when staff tried to get me back to bed I would very agressively fight to stay up and walking around. Nobody told me about this directly and I had to piece together rumors and stray bits of conversation to figure this out. I seemed to be a literal Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I apparently gave a couple of staff members black eyes during my strolls. I typically had no memory of any of this the next morning. Some mornings I had some very vague memories of strange events during the night. This occured during my entire stay. Sleepwalking is a known side effect of Ambian. The thing that bothers me most is that my doctor didn't alter my medications and remove the Ambian.

My son used 2 take the seroquel went off of it (many yrs ago) & still will talk about wanting some.( he is an addict though). But the seroquel was much stronger & worked 4 him. Definately talk w/ur dr. do research. Mayb u might b able 2 up the ambien until u get off the seroquel but don't go by me it's only a thought that I have check w/the dr. & people who know. To c what safe solutions there may b.& what other patients may have shared w/them about any problems etc. getting off these meds.

Question/Comment:
I am a 67 year old female. I have been taking ambin(not CR) for several years. I take a1/3 of a pill and I do fine. I have had a problem getting to sleep, but can stay asleep. If I can't get to sleep at night I panic. So Dr. prescribed the ambin. I do notice a memory problem. I lost my husband of 33 years one month ago. I was given prozac. Don't like medications at all, but afraid I won't get to sleep. I am going to stop the prozac. The 1/3 of a 10mg of ambin I would love to stop. I panic when I think of withdrawals. Does anyone have a suggestion? Dr. doesn't help.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
You need to slowly stop taking it. Basically you do it by lowering the dose(weaning off) every night until you are free and clear of it. This is done by cutting the pills, staying on the same dose for a few nights before cutting it down again. I was on Ambien for months, and this is how I was able to get off it without withdrawl symtoms.

Answer/Reply:
to the 68 yr. old female. there is no withdrawl for ambien, no need to worry, but there is definitely a withdrawl from prozac. you need to ween yourself off of that. you can do that with out the aide of a doctor. take one pill every other day for 3 pills and then one pill every third day for 2 or three pills then u can stop. if you don't ween yourself there is a high chance of going into severe suicidal/homicidal depression. i am not a doctor, but i do speak from experience.

If you take the Ambience as prescribed, it is a safe and effective sleep aid. But you must take it on an empty stomach. I quit eatting anything after 9:30pm. I take 1 ambience about 10-5 min. before 11pm. I fall asleep around midnite. I Pray before I go to sleep.

Answer/Reply:
I took the regular Ambien for years, I never have slept well.. When Ambien CR came out, I started taking it because I wake up multiple times during the night, which still is a problem occassionally. I have tried all of the other prescription sleep medications and Ambien CR 12.5mg is the only one that works the best.
I still take it, but after reading comments on the site, I am going to make sure I don't eat or snack at least 3-4 hours before going to bed. My doctor doesn't have a lot of alternatives for me. All of the over the counter type of sleeps medications have never helped and herpal medications haven't helped either.
I would try doing some of the suggestions on the comment board here. A lot people have given some great suggestions.
Also, I suffer with back and neck pain. I was rear ended a few years ago by an 18 year old girl at 11:00am while sitting at a red light and she was on her cell phone, 3 times the legal limit, going around 40 mph!! I needed major surgery with donor bone and titanium plates in my neck and lower back. I stay away from pain medications, I work on being medication free as much as possible, but I do take my Ambien. I will occasionally take Advil. I would stop the Ambien, but if I don't sleep, my pain is so much worse during the day and I am unable to work.
Ellen, I would talk to your doctor. You didn't mention the dosage or type of Ambien that you take either.
Good luck and hang in there. There is nothing like a good night's sleep. I also bought a Poster-Pedic bed and special pillows, which have been helpful.

I take the regular Ambien and have for years. Typically I'd only use 1/2 a pill and it worked fine. My pharmacist however as switched manufacturers and now they come as tiny round pills that can't be broken. After taking a full Ambien I'm totally exhausted all day and can't function as I should.
I also used to alternate between my 1/2 dose of Ambien and a dose of Lorazapam (to avoid dependance) but for some reason my physician has stopped refilling the lorazapam.
Hopefully my pharmacist goes back to the other manufacturer soon.

Question/Comment:
I have been using Ambien 10 mg (not CR) for a few years now. When I was 130 lbs and under (I am 5' 1") I was able to take just the 10 mg and have it work. However, after gaining almost 100 lbs over 4 years (and four kids), I have found 10 mg is ineffective. I have to take 20 mg for it to have an effect. No one has ever considered my weight with dosage. Furthermore, it is not recommended to take 20 mg or more due to its addictive properties. The pharmacist will not fill Ambien unless it is within 5 days of last fill date. So that leaves me with half the month with sleep and the other half waking up a million times at night (sometimes for long periods). VERY frustrating. I also have found I cannot eat within 4 hours of taking the medication or it doesn't work at all. I can eat after taking the Ambien though...just have to do it quickly or I'll wake up wearing the food...lol.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
You know I have wondered about this too. I am at about the 230lb area myself although I am much taller at 5'10" and I feel that 10 mg doesn't do the trick from me all the time. I have experimented with taking 20mg with each 10 mg beng about an hour apart (it takes up to 2 hours to work sometimes) and I feel that I sleep much better. But as you say you can't get the doctor to write a scrip for 20mg. I have also tried Lunesta and it didn't work at all. So I went almost a week with very little sleep. I don't know what is left to try if the Ambien stops working. I agree that maybe the weight factor isn't taken into consideration as it seems that is should be. Maybe doctors will read this also and do some reasearch into it?
Good luck and best of dreams to you.

I am a 20 month breast cancer survivor with some remaining significant surgical pain, who also has sleep apnea, chemo-induced hot flashes, & arthritis pain. I've had insomnia and could not go to sleep AT ALL without Ambien CR and several pain pills, but even then I'd first lay awake for hours and hours first, just miserable. Finally, after reading someplace on this site that one shouldn't eat anything before or after taking Ambien CR, I tried not eating anytime after about 8:00 p.m. or even having my cup of milk that was my habit to drink at bedtime, and now I can take just one Ambien (no pain meds even!) and I fall asleep within 20 minutes. It's like a MIRACLE to me to FINALLY be able to sleep for the last four nights in a row. I actually feel like living again now. :^) I'd discussed about Ambien with my oncologist, general practitioner, surgeon, sleep apnea doctor, pharmacist, and every nurse who asked about my meds, and not a single one thought to mention to stop eating a few hours before taking the Ambien, they'd just prescribe more pain pills. A couple years of misery could have been avoided if just one person would have suggested that.

I am taking 10 mg of Zolpidem (Ambien) at night to be able to sleep. My doctor told me that it does affect the memory after continuous use. It is the only med that lets me go back to sleep when I wake up at (usually) 2:30 am every morning.

I have been taking ambien for about 2 years. When I was taking care of my Mom who had alzheimers i was getting 30 pills a month. It helped me get through some of the nights. But it does cause me to be somewhat drowsy in the morning.
Now my insurance will only pay for 10 pills a month so I am forced to use them only when necessary. I had several panic like reactions when I stopped taking the pills every day so i do believe that this pill is very addictive.
But what are we to do when nothing else works and the insurance companies will not cover most new drugs???

Answer/Reply:
My problem is not falling asleep at bedtime; it's waking up at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and having my active mind keep me awake. When that happens (maybe 40% of the time), I use a pill cutter to take a small slice of an ambien, maybe 1/8 of a pill, and can fall back to sleep after a while. Using a small amount is enough to get back to sleep without being groggy when I wake up at a normal time.

I tried a sample (the 7 free pills offered by manufacturer). By the third day, I could not generate enough energy to get out of bed. My family also told me of eating during the day, eating which I do not remember. Apparently, there were other manifestations of unconcious actions. My daughter drove me to the psychiatrist; I was not able to drive. The psychiatrist also agreed that I was over-medicated. I no longer take the Ambien I had been taking for several years to combat the insomnia of fibromyalgia. I felt that a tolerance level had been reached, so now I take the generic for Restoril.

Question/Comment:
I am a 10 month lung cancer survivor with a major arthritic and pinched nerve condition in the lower lower spine. Only two of my medicines have potential conflict - Hydracodone-apap for pain and Ambien CR for sleeping. Through adjustments in both dosages and timing of dosages, adverse conflicts have been effectively minimized. In addition to reducing pain levels to a tolerable level during normal awake times, I am getting 8 hours sleep almost every night. Changing to regular Ambien is not recommended by my doctor, but trying to use only half a tablet for a few nights has been approved even though abnormal drowsiness, etc. has not been otherwise experienced. Getting a fully restful sleep at night provides a potentially more active and less painful following day. The actual benefit outweighs any potential adverse condition.

I know that when I was taking Klonopin (which is in the same family as Xanex, benzodiazepin) and Ambien, I did get a lot of confusion and forgetting things and not being able to focus. The violent outburts and different personality characteristics I also think are due to the 2 medications. It would really be something that you should ask your doctor about because what you say is concerning.

I am a 67 yr. old female. I was taking Ambien CR (12 mg) about 2 years ago. Because of the expense, I started cutting them in half and still slept soundly. One doctor told me many of his patients did this and he seemed not to be alarmed. Another doctor told me to absolutely not cut them in half because they are time released and you get zapped all at once when cutting them. Now I am on the generic of plain Ambien, so it is not time released. The generic is 10 mg. and I cut them in half. Takes a little longer to work, but I sleep all night without waking up until morning.

I'm a 60 year old women and have taken Ambien Cr for years nightly I do occassionly sleep walk and talk in my sleep to the point of waking myself up, I also experience nightmares and night terrors but all this was occurring prior to taking the pills and has lessened a great deal since I've been on them. I used to sleep only 1 to 2 hours prior to the pills now I sleep 5 or 6 hours. The cost of the pills is very expensive but fortunately I have insurance to cover the majority of it but I still pay for a lot of it. A half of pill doesn't work for me.
Now my Mother who was 82 recently was given Ambien cr and she had a very bad reaction to it. She had a severe hallucinations with it and extreme anxiety when given her very first pill and she had to discontinue use immediately.
My Father also was on it and he is 84 was experiencing confusion and depressiion after being on it for 3 months and they finally discontinued his usuage and switched him to a different medication.
Both my Mother and Father had been through recent traumas at the time they experienced these symptons, my Mother had just found out she had terminal cancer and would die within days, my Father of course was upset at her upcoming and sudden death after 62 years of marriage and sunk into a major depression because she only survived 13 days from diagnosis to death. So these factors need to be entered into the equation.
My own experiences in life also contribute to the problems I have with sleep and I don't personally feel that they are directly related to the medication. But your site has noted that other medications I am taking may have some contraindications. These medications are requip, zoloft, metaformin, fursomide, topomax, lisinopril, nexium, tetracycline, metroprolol, methocarbomol, hydrocodone, What are the contraindications?

Have you tried an all natural herbal that is supposed to work. My Psych. at the hospital recommended it to me, b/c it was easily affordable, doable, & all natural. Try Valerian Root. It is a capsule that looks like it has "weed" in it but is effective for many. I take two as needed instead of xanax & take 4 at bedtime. Many of my friends just need the two to go to sleep. Walmart sells them on the very bottom shelf of the vitamins & herbs, last item on shelf. I think it is 60 or 90 pills for $4.74. I live in a small town & our Walmart only carries a max of 4 bottles so when I buy I always buy 3 so it leaves 1 for someone in need & cause WM to quickly order more. Give it try. It is all natural and won't hurt you at all. I have been using it for 4 yrs. I have taken as much as 6 for an anxiety attack & it knocked me out, deep to sleep. But worked as fiber when I awoke.

The best herb for nervousness or aniexty is an adaptogenic herb called Ashwagandha. It changed my life. My mind doesn't speed as fast as it did, either. I've been using it for 8yrs and haven't read anything still, about it disagreeing with prescribed meds.
I got samples for lunesta and ambiencr from the doc to try. My subconcious keeps replaying my childhood on some nights. Not happy scenes. Other than the unpleasant dreams I sleep good. I am trying to get rid of the dreams.
I only need 1 ashwagandha a day. A friend takes 2. I do believe the body flushes what it doesn't use.
I never had side effects. In fact other people noticed I was calmer. I hadn't noticed any change. It was wonderful.

I take 2 mg. of Zanaflex about an hour before bedtime. It usually makes me really sleepy, but doesn't help to maintain my sleep. I also take 10 mg of Ambien at bedtime to make sure I sleep through th e night. Very early on there was some grogginess upon awakening but it subsided fairly quickly. Zanaflex causes quite a bit of dry mouth also. Just be sure you're really ready to go to sleep.

In my experience with Ambien CR you definitely needed 8 hours of sleep and when you took them you had better be on your way to go to sleep. I had numerous bouts of sleep walking, sleep talking, loss of knowledge & memory of my actions. I did not want to have the full pleasure of being a good wife and not recalling any of it, only to evidence of my pj's on the floor beside the bed. After discussing this with my doctor we switched to a generic that works sufficiently but helps me to maintain by own control. I currently use zolipidiem (sp?). I could not take the drugs you mentioned together at all. I would assume that just 4 hrs. of sleep is a serious concern, seek your physician's advice.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking ambien for about a year (not every night, just as needed). I have tried sonata and lunestra, neither worked well at all for me. Ambien is fabulous. I can sleep, have a great, rested sleep and I don't feel drained and horrible in the morning. I can get out of bed easily because I am so rested. Shuts my brain off from all the stress that plagues it some nights. The co-pay for me is much cheaper then the co-pay for Sonata also. Very satisfied.

Question/Comment:
I have been an Ambien user for years. It's the only thing that works for me. I have never had any ill-affects of any kind. I take it if I need to and don't have any issues if I don't take it. What I like about it is that after the 6-8 hrs of sleep you wake up with no hang/over. brain refreshed. I had trouble sleeping from physical pain but also because my brain would keep running lists of what I had to do every night, and Godforbid I got a new idea my brain went into overtime. Ambien allows me to shut my brain off and really ,really sleep. It's very rewarding to know that there is something out there that will actually work...
