Question/Comment:

I am a 68 yr. old female. I had foot surgery (elective) last Jan. which did not go well. Before that I was taking atenolol for elevated bp with no problems. My bp went up after surgery and my family Dr. put me on hydrothiazide with not much results, so he added lisinopril--now my bp is fine. After taking so much pain meds, Vicodin-later ibuprofin, I learned these can mess up bp meds. No wonder the atenolol didn't work. I now take the meds at night because of the fatigue. Can these meds cause stomach problems, such as lactose intolerance? Oh, well, at my age I don't need to drink milk and I certainly don't need ice cream.

My husband takes---

Prazosin HCL 1mg capsule one at AM, two at evening
Metoprolol Tartrate 50 mg tablet 1/2 tab twice a day
Rosuvastatin CA 20 mg 1/2 tablet a day
Amlodipine Besylate 5mg tab one a day

He is always dizzy. Really bad today. Do any of these medications do that to him?

Question/Comment:

My husband has been taking METOPROLOL 100 MG TABLET CAR in the morning for the last two years with no side affects. Lately the Dr. also prescribed LISINOPRIL-HCTZ 20-12.5 MG TEV for Gary to take at lunchtime which is lowering his blood pressure. The question is he has had two episodes where he has gotten cold sweats and feels very weak when following this plan. Both within two weeks of each other. He realized he had not been drinking enough water in the afternoon and evening, since watching his water intake to include 8 - 8oz glasses or more daily he has not had this reaction. Anyone out there with similar issues?

68 year old Female – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

I have taken 40 mg. of Lisinopril for about two years now. Although, it has lowered my blood pressure significantly, I have noticed that has had several side affects with me. I have found out that it brings on mild Anxiety attacks as well at heart palpitations which is unfortunate since the drug seems to work well for my blood pressure. I will consult with my doctor now for another alternative for lowering my blood pressure.

I had no idea that my night time cough was related to the medication. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the information regarding the coughing at night. I am a 48 year old female that has been on Lisinopril for almost 2 years now to lower my blood pressure also.
I often wondered what brought on the night coughs that sometimes turned into bronchitis or upper respiratory problems that required a doctor's visit to the same doctor that prescribed the Lisinopril for me.

Thanks again for the sympton info!

I take Lisinopril 30MG for BP. I also take Metoprolol 50MG for increased heart rate. It is common! Ask your doctor if this might be a solution for you.

After 30 days on 10 mg lisinopril I went by ambulance to the emergency room with chest tightness and difficulty breathing in the middle of the night. All tests were fine except an elevated pancreas enzyme was discovered. Now I'm on a progressive diet for 10 days beginning with only clear liquids and building up to a bland very low fat diet. I have follow up appointment with physician next week to see if further tests are required.

I am a 45 y/o white female, and I believe I was having similar symptoms after about two months of Lisinopril, 20 mg daily. I also had the cough, so my Dr. took me off of it. But I had episodes of heart pounding and chest tightness. I was worried to the point I wondered if I was heading toward a heart attack. I am overweight and diabetic. I am relieved to find that someone else was having similar symptoms (although I am sorry you are having to experience them). Consult with your Doctor-maybe there is a better medication out there for you.

Last year doctor put me on 10 mg. lisinopril by day 3 had cough, tachycardia, dizziness, and by day 5 point where had to go to urgent care as also had wheeze, unable to eat or drink and keep anything down coughing more than not. ER physician said go off told me to return to the prescriber after the weekend, doing so his response was go back on ER docs rule out a whole class of drugs too quickly. Went on one day and all returned with a vengence, took two months off to resolve at all and ever since despite being OFF that medication for 14 months now continue to be stuck with the chronic cough, and asthma like congestion wheeze since that time (periodically inability to keep things down as a result of cough severity. Given it was ill-prescribed to begin with i.e. b.p not any recent chance the only high range reading inaccurate because individual used a too small cuff, whereas others are variable and could go back 20 yrs. and find some same or higher. Prescribing based upon medical guideline changes where saying over 120 is...which not all agree with.
6 months off, experiencing one episode seen at another facility chest exray was okay, P.A. take was allergic reaction. Which led me to look on-line to see what I could find and appears a known side affect of this drug (in my case perhaps unusual in that occurred so quickly and additional symptoms) for persons on for a length of time and then going off is to be stuck with a chronic life-long cough after discontinuation. Where prescribing physician facility is quick to note adverse reactions relative to other from alternate facilities, interestingly despite letter from ER doctor and other, the prescribing physician still had no mention in his notes when I was triaged to him for an unrelated visit (not by choice) but since seeing again attempted to address, and also noted found it "interesting" he hadn't bothered to even mention it in his notes, as with other at the facility, trying to pretend didn't exist, happen irrespective of documentation and fact to contrary (more instances, issues than only this drug) instead of acknowledging, just says "I think your depressed" never mind what actually is, or the patient thinks is medically relevant. Very convenient way to excuse everything from failing to test, diagnose, appropriately treat, refer, take responsibility for errors. My advise this OR ANY OTHER drug a physician prescribes BEFORE taking read all the literature, do an online search on the mfg. site or pharmaceutical site and look up all the potential side effects/interactions common or rare. My experience has been too many instances end up with the purportedly rare or worse. Which leads me/should lead all consumers to question if they are indeed as rare and unusual, unforeseen as those prescribing or promoting would have patients believe.

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Leg and back pain is not a commonly reported side effect of Lisinopril. However, iGuard has received some reports of muscle pain - less than 1% of members taking lisinopril reported muscle pain. There are other medications available to treat high blood pressure but it is difficult to recommend a specific medication since blood pressure medication is often tailored for your medical conditions or other medications. Talk to your doctor about your back and leg pain and ask him or her which other medications are available for you. This is also a good opportunity to review non-medical treatments for high blood pressure with your doctor - such as maintaining a healthy low-salt diet, maintaining a healthy weight, increasing physical activity, and stopping smoking.

I too have had pain in my upper back, in the lung area. I am noticing that if I do not take the pill for a few days, I do not have this pain. I also have occasional pain in my leg. I have been taking note so that I can tell my doctor.

I am a 71 year old woman and I have been taking Lisinopril 40mg for a very long time. Did not have any problems, so I thought, but in reading your comment I have to say I too, have been having back pains in the sciatic area and thigh pains. Not enough to disable me, but enough to say I feel somewhat stiff after sitting for a long time. Do you take any other meds with the lisinopril because I didn't experience any of this until a while after having additonal meds added to my 'daily regime' of pills.

Lisinipril 2.5mg, Vit E 400mg, Centrum Silver, and ocassional ADVIL liquid gel caps and Sudafed PE. Can you help me? Last night at the ER I was given Augmentin and Phenergan for my bronchitis.

If you have kidney problems you are NOT suppose to ingest Advil. This is harmful to your kidneys. Also the Sudafed should be avoided at night because it will make you hyper. My best wishes are with you.

Vitamin E will cause insomnia. There is no normal dose for Vitamin E, you must find your own tolerance, Stop taking E and see if normal sleep returns. Vitamin E is oil soluable and will build up in the body if not consumed by activity or exercise, the build up can cause sleep issues. You must find a level of E comensurate with your activity level.

I've been taking Lisinopril 10mg since 9/2006. I don't use it for any of the above conditions. My doctor prescribed it to me to take care of my endocrine system(kidneys, liver, etc.). I am a Type II diabetic and seems to be doing me well. No drug reactions or side effects. If you are a Type II diabetic, you may discuss it with you doctor about the possibility of being placed on Lisinopril to protect those important vital organs we need so much.

Member Answer/Reply:

I started taking lisinopril this year (10mg/day). Then, I developed severe knee-joint pain in one leg only (the other knee swelled up and so did my ankle on the other leg - which only came and went. This situation went on for several months until I started asking some folks about this and it was recommended to give up caffeinated food products. I was told that diet Pepsi products were especially not good for joint health, but since I decided to kick the caffeine habit the Pepsi was included with my self-imposed ban. I can walk w/o the knee pain again but it bugs me a bit during the night when I knock knees together or roll over suddenly - and this wakes me up. I can now get out of bed again without having first to sit on the edge of the bed and prepare for shock of pain in the knees. The only other drug I'm using is a ZOCOR generic 10mg/day. And that's MY story, not sure if there's any substance to it or not!!

Question/Comment:

I was on Lisinopril & Verapamil for many years. About a year ago I was diagnosed with atrial fibulaition. Warfarin was added & shortly after my blood pressure went up higher & pulse irregular. At the first of the year cardiologist added digoxin. Since then I started slurring my words. Had scans & they did not show a stroke, but the slurring has gotten progressively worse & I have trouble swallowing. I have had therapy for both, only slight improvement. My kids have been checking the internet & they think there is some sort of drug interaction. My digoxin is monitored with .8 in April & 1.0 this month. Any ideas or suggestions to help?

Question/Comment:

I have been on 5mg Lisinopril daily for 9 years following post partum cardiomyopathy, which has long resolved. The low dose lisinopril, as it was explained to me, is to keep blood pressure lower as not to strain the heart ( I was on digoxin as well for 3 years, off for 6). Lately I have been having daily headaches and dizziness. I've had full workup with MRI that was all normal. No one has mentioned it could be the lisinopril. Could I be reacting to it after being on it so long?

44 year old Female – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

In response to your question. I am a nurse practitioner and a patient who is on lisinopril. It is very important for health care providers to disclose cautions and side effects with patients. Many times people are mismanaged because they are misdiagnosed. Educating patients and ourselves are very vital. Lisinopril is a very good drug for diabetics whith high blood pressure. Lisinopril and other ace inhibitors help reserve a person' s kidneys. However the side effects can be very bothersome. I have known patients to do fine and in 2 years they begin to have side effects from this medication. Most people can tolerate a low dose, but some can not. My suggestion to you is to conitnue with any work ups that your doctor recommend to rule out any other issues that may be difficult to detect. Do not be afraid to ask your doctor questions. You may take a postive and humble approach in asking questions so that the provider may not feel that you are questioning his/her integrity. However, any provider should be willing to answer any questions that their patients may have. If that doctor does know that answer, he sould not pretend that he knows and he must be willing to investigate the answer. If you are under the care of more than one doctor, then may sure that they communicate and are in sync with your treatment plan. I hope this info help.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking lisinopril 2.5 mg for 3 mos now. I did have a slight dry cough before taking this medication, and I still do but not bad or often. It could be allergies. I have had no other side effect from it, and it seems to be doing the job. Will be seeing my Cardiologist in Nov. and be curious as to why he prescribed this to me as my blood pressure was fine. It certainly has gotten rid of my palpitations and those darn extra beats that can literally wake you up from a sleep.

I am happy with it so far, and yes it is a little sedating, so be careful with driving.

Member Answer/Reply:

Have you had a heart attack, heart failure/edema (swellling), or stents put in your heart. Any of these could be the reason your cardiologist put you on this medication. Feel free to call your cardiologist any time and ask. Example, "Could you explain to me why you prescribed this medication for me, so that I may gain a better understanding of my health."

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Lisinopril for approx. 4 years now. I only had "borderline" h.b.p. (usually 140/82) or so, but still my doctor placed me on that because in the past I had tried other medications such as Vasotec, Tenormin, Elapril and Procardia and my bp was very unstable. I always felt sick. During the first three years of starting to take Lisinopril I felt great, but as of late I have noticed my bp fluctuates, from 155/96 to 130/82 in a matter of 10 minutes.
Why is that fluctuation happening? This is occuring, as I said in the last few months. When it goes past 140/82 or so I feel terrible, lightheaded, headachy and sick to my stomach. Then it goes down in a matter of minutes and I feel "normal"..... Doctor cannot explain. I don't really want to change meds because you never know what side effects you are gonna get. HELP...... suggestions?

Lisinopril seems to make me very lethargic -- even while I'm taking Adderall! My blood pressure was 112-60, but the MD refused to change my 20m to 10. Why?

56 year old Female – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

A few iGuard members (less than 1%) have reported grogginess or fatigue while taking lisinopril. It's worth another chat with your doctor if your lethargy still concerns you - he/she should be able explain why he/she continues to prescribed the higher dose and you may also want to ask if there are other treatment options for your condition.

I would guess that any of these ACE inhibitors can cause lethergy. They appear to just affect people in ways unique to the individual. I was taking Lisinopril and had the cough. Told my doc and they put me on Avapro. The Avapro knocked me flat with fatigue and weakness. i went back to the Lisinopril, but am very, very unhappy about the cough.

Member Answer/Reply:

do you know why this causes the cough? i also have it and i hate it

41 year old Female – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Lisinopril is in the class of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, which has a dry, persistent cough as a side effect for all of the medications in this class. The exact reason behind why such cough occurs is not completely understood. Although blocking the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) helps control blood pressure, it may also cause the build up of certain natural substances such as bradykinin and substance P which is thought to cause coughing. If this side effect is still bothering you, you should follow up to see if your doctor is willing to consider other treatment options.

Member Answer/Reply:

change the mil your self don't rely on the doc to care I found this out. But I did just see another doc and she said check your blood pressure before you get out of bed and before you go to the bathroom. If it normal she said diffently lower the dose.

I took this drug for many years. It worked great for the high bp,but I had a severe rash for many years on my arms and face.I did not know what was causing the rash.My doctor did not know either. The rash was a lot worse in sunny weather. I would even scratch my arms until they bled while I was asleep. I did not have any hair growing on my arms.
Then I read a notice somewhere online that Zestril could cause sun sensitivity. I stopped the med about 4 weeks ago, and my arms are almost completly well now.And the hair is growing back.
