Global Patient Feedback for Lisinopril ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I was on Lisinopril & Verapamil for many years. About a year ago I was diagnosed with atrial fibulaition. Warfarin was added & shortly after my blood pressure went up higher & pulse irregular. At the first of the year cardiologist added digoxin. Since then I started slurring my words. Had scans & they did not show a stroke, but the slurring has gotten progressively worse & I have trouble swallowing. I have had therapy for both, only slight improvement. My kids have been checking the internet & they think there is some sort of drug interaction. My digoxin is monitored with .8 in April & 1.0 this month. Any ideas or suggestions to help?

Yes. It is normal. It may go away when she gets used to the lower blood pressure, or she may have to switch off of it.

I am 64 year old female.I had a haemorhagic stroke in may .Hospital doctor took me off H.R.T .Since then i have been suffering with hot flushes and soaking wet body. I had an appointment at the hospital last week and the doctor said the problem was probably a rare side effect of Lisinipril .I was on 30 mg but its now being reduced and being gradualy replaced with Amias.Has anyone else ever suffered from this side effect ?

Question/Comment:
I have been on 5mg Lisinopril daily for 9 years following post partum cardiomyopathy, which has long resolved. The low dose lisinopril, as it was explained to me, is to keep blood pressure lower as not to strain the heart ( I was on digoxin as well for 3 years, off for 6). Lately I have been having daily headaches and dizziness. I've had full workup with MRI that was all normal. No one has mentioned it could be the lisinopril. Could I be reacting to it after being on it so long?

Answer/Reply:
In response to your question. I am a nurse practitioner and a patient who is on lisinopril. It is very important for health care providers to disclose cautions and side effects with patients. Many times people are mismanaged because they are misdiagnosed. Educating patients and ourselves are very vital. Lisinopril is a very good drug for diabetics whith high blood pressure. Lisinopril and other ace inhibitors help reserve a person' s kidneys. However the side effects can be very bothersome. I have known patients to do fine and in 2 years they begin to have side effects from this medication. Most people can tolerate a low dose, but some can not. My suggestion to you is to conitnue with any work ups that your doctor recommend to rule out any other issues that may be difficult to detect. Do not be afraid to ask your doctor questions. You may take a postive and humble approach in asking questions so that the provider may not feel that you are questioning his/her integrity. However, any provider should be willing to answer any questions that their patients may have. If that doctor does know that answer, he sould not pretend that he knows and he must be willing to investigate the answer. If you are under the care of more than one doctor, then may sure that they communicate and are in sync with your treatment plan. I hope this info help.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking lisinopril 2.5 mg for 3 mos now. I did have a slight dry cough before taking this medication, and I still do but not bad or often. It could be allergies. I have had no other side effect from it, and it seems to be doing the job. Will be seeing my Cardiologist in Nov. and be curious as to why he prescribed this to me as my blood pressure was fine. It certainly has gotten rid of my palpitations and those darn extra beats that can literally wake you up from a sleep.
I am happy with it so far, and yes it is a little sedating, so be careful with driving.

Answer/Reply:
Have you had a heart attack, heart failure/edema (swellling), or stents put in your heart. Any of these could be the reason your cardiologist put you on this medication. Feel free to call your cardiologist any time and ask. Example, "Could you explain to me why you prescribed this medication for me, so that I may gain a better understanding of my health."

Question/Comment:
I have been taking Lisinopril for approx. 4 years now. I only had "borderline" h.b.p. (usually 140/82) or so, but still my doctor placed me on that because in the past I had tried other medications such as Vasotec, Tenormin, Elapril and Procardia and my bp was very unstable. I always felt sick. During the first three years of starting to take Lisinopril I felt great, but as of late I have noticed my bp fluctuates, from 155/96 to 130/82 in a matter of 10 minutes.
Why is that fluctuation happening? This is occuring, as I said in the last few months. When it goes past 140/82 or so I feel terrible, lightheaded, headachy and sick to my stomach. Then it goes down in a matter of minutes and I feel "normal"..... Doctor cannot explain. I don't really want to change meds because you never know what side effects you are gonna get. HELP...... suggestions?

A few iGuard members (less than 1%) have reported grogginess or fatigue while taking lisinopril. It's worth another chat with your doctor if your lethargy still concerns you - he/she should be able explain why he/she continues to prescribed the higher dose and you may also want to ask if there are other treatment options for your condition.

I would guess that any of these ACE inhibitors can cause lethergy. They appear to just affect people in ways unique to the individual. I was taking Lisinopril and had the cough. Told my doc and they put me on Avapro. The Avapro knocked me flat with fatigue and weakness. i went back to the Lisinopril, but am very, very unhappy about the cough.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Lisinopril is in the class of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, which has a dry, persistent cough as a side effect for all of the medications in this class. The exact reason behind why such cough occurs is not completely understood. Although blocking the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) helps control blood pressure, it may also cause the build up of certain natural substances such as bradykinin and substance P which is thought to cause coughing. If this side effect is still bothering you, you should follow up to see if your doctor is willing to consider other treatment options.

I took this drug for many years. It worked great for the high bp,but I had a severe rash for many years on my arms and face.I did not know what was causing the rash.My doctor did not know either. The rash was a lot worse in sunny weather. I would even scratch my arms until they bled while I was asleep. I did not have any hair growing on my arms.
Then I read a notice somewhere online that Zestril could cause sun sensitivity. I stopped the med about 4 weeks ago, and my arms are almost completly well now.And the hair is growing back.
I am so releived to be normal again. I spend a lot of time outside at my grandkids sporting events, and our family loves to have picnics at the Park, yay me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question/Comment:
I am starting my second month of lisinopril. Idon`t even know why my doctor has even put me on this medicine. Ihave always had normal or low blood pressure. The month before he put me on this medicine Ihad perfect blood pressure. Iwent in a month later and my blood pressure was 157-94. This was a one time thing. My doctor sent me for bloodwork and everything was great. Ialways have lower cholestral and even my bad cholestral is good. Ifeel so bad on this medicine my family says they have noticed a big difference( not for the good )in me since Ihave been taking this medicine. I don`t feel like myself at all. Icalled my doctor when my blood pressure dropped to 102-52. The last time I took my blood pressure it was 85-46. That was about a week ago. I am worried this medicine is going to hurt me. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY HEART PROBLEMS BEFORE. Iwould like to know if anyone else is dealing with this same problem.I am getting a 24 hour heart monitor on Wednesday. Ia am so weak yet I feel compelled to move around and clean constantly. Iwould very much appreciate any comment about this. Thank You in advance.

Answer/Reply:
You probably had an episode of edema--swelling of the feet and ankles. This is a common reason for prescribing Lisinopril.
It also is sometimes used for people with mild to moderate congestive heart failure. Ask your doctor to explain to you just what use and off label use he is prescribing lisinopril for. It may be that there is an off-label result that the medication gives for unrelated causes.
Don't worry too much, but do talk to your doctor soon.

YOU need to take control of YOUR healthcare. Do your research online....look it up....I see NO reason why you are on this drug. You had a one-time high reading. Usually there are several readings taken and then an average over several times. YOU MUST GET A SECOND OPINION and quit blindly following a doctor's advice.

Yes, I'm struggling with the Lisinopril too. Been on it for about 2 weeks. 4 weeks before that on two betablockers that made me feel "sick" 1/2 the time.
My struggle now is to get back to a normal exercise routine.
I'm taking Dr. Michael's blood factor, which works for my 87 year old mother. (I'm 55, male. 5'8,
180 lbm, formerly very active biker/inline skater/cross country skier.
My struggle now is to find if I have an UNDERLAYING health problem, or if everything is from the BB's and the Lisinopril.
Reading comments like yours makes me think the "snake venom" derivative (that's true I find!)
Lisinopril.

Question/Comment:
I am experiencing slight dizziness. Could this be a side effect from taking lisinopril? Here is my story. I have had high blood pressure ever since I was in high school. However, I didn't start taking medication for it until about 5 years ago. About one month ago, I ran out of medication and my doctor was on vacation. I could have gone to another doctor, but I didn't think my high blood pressure was bad enough to do that. (I was only taking 10mg.) I was off my medication for about 2 weeks. I took my blood pressure at a Wal-Mart Supercenter and it was 200/120 (or about that). I almost drove myself to the hospital right then, but I had a was getting a refill (only 15 pills - 20mg) and then I had an appointment. My appointment is tomorrow. Because I was only taking 10mg before, I decided to only take that again (cutting the pills in half). I check my blood pressure at least 2 times a day. My blood pressure went down, but not a whole lot, so I took the 20mg a day. Like I said, my appointment is tomorrow, but I am slightly concerned about the dizziness. Could it be because I am taking 20 mg and only need 10mg?

Question/Comment:
Doctor told me that dry cough was sometimes a side effect. If I had a cough, he said he'd prescribe something different. It seems like the people who have a cough shouldn't be telling us. They should be telling their doctor.
There was a study in "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" that found that mice that genetically couldn't create angiotensin-converting enzyme (the stuff Lysinopril blocks) weighed less and had 50% less body fat. (Look up the article from 4/25/08 on WebMD.)
Independently, I noticed that I eat less when I'm on Lysinopril. And, I noticed that the effect increased when my dosage went from 5mg to 20mg. I'm not losing lots of weight, but my weight gain leveled off. Anyone else notice anything similar?
For the record, 5'7'' male, 150lbs down from a peak of 165lbs. College weight was 125lbs. 41 years old. I run on a treadmill twice a week on advice from doctor (but didn't at my maximum weight.)
