iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Yes,I have been takeing this for some time and also take pain meds but it continues. Since I have had 3 heart attacks and now have 5 stints it is important that I take Lisinopril I put up with the discomfort as the lesser problem.

Question/Comment:

Is there ANYTHING that can be done about the cough? It's not constant, but dang...strikes without warning and makes me nuts!

Answer/Reply:

Cough with ACE Inhibitors is one side effect that we see alot. If you are bothered by it, ask your prescriber to give you something else. There are many antihypertension medications. ACE Inhibitors are only one class of medications. Your prescriber should be able to find a medication that will not only control your blood pressure, but also be workable in your life. You should not have to put up with such a side effect as the cough. Rebecca, RN

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I was on Lisinopril for 2 yrs. The cough was debilitating. It came suddenly and I coughed until I gagged or vomited. I would ask for something else for BP.

Question/Comment:

This is my first year on lisinopril and, although I have the cough, it is the first medication that has significantly lowered my hbp in over 15 years! So when my doctor asked me if I wanted to change to get rid of the cough, I answered a resounding, "NO!" In only 3 months, it lowered my systolic pressure by 30 points and my diastolic by 13 points. Relief at last! If you can deal with the cough, stay on it - it's good medicine.

Answer/Reply:

In response to the 58 year old female's comment--what dosage are you taking? I'm taking only 10 mg but I have NEVER experienced this cough you all are talking about--perhaps it is only true of the higher dosage?? One thing I believe it is doing tho---I seem to have more itching--right below my neck on my back--same general area every day--several times a day. Anyone else experiencing that? Actually my BP still seems high --esp when I go to see the doctors etc. (I seem to have "white coat" syndrome--so it always is higher in their offices.)

Answer/Reply:

I'm also taking only 10 mg but have the cough. I feel dizzy at times, my hair is very dry and hard to manage, itching, vision problems, dry mouth, and my bp was not controlled at that doseage. I changed to another medication (Metoprolol). All the symptoms cleared up in a day or two. But because of a problem with that drug I'm back to Lisonopril (until I see a new doctor). That same day all the symptoms came back.

66 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

How long have you been taking Lisonopril? Started taking 5 mg along with other bp med. about 5 mos. ago. At first had same symptoms including lethargy, and stomach aches if taken with food. My Dr. said to give it time, and he was right. Am taking med at bedtime, but still feel lethargic at times. I have the dry hair problem--a product called Real Solutions moisture recovery conditioner works great-it's cheap, over the counter, I got it at Rite-Aid. Hope this helps

I have been having incredible problems with always being hot. My temp generally runs low, around 97.4-97.6. In the winter I can sleep without covers despite the snow outside and the thermostat set on 61-62. I am 55 and post-menopausal by 12 years. This has just started in the last 4 years. My gyno told me last week that if feeling hot is hormonally related you don't feel hot all the time. I am hot every minute of every day! lol

I've taken Zoloft off/on for many years, and well before this heating issue came up. My gyno dr said she thinks it could be some of the ACE inhibitors I'm taking. I take lisinopril (no hctz) and toprol xl. If you find out anything new, please let me know. conn

I have been on this for some time and have never had a cough. I take most of my meds when I first get up. And I keep a glass of water handy. If I need to I get two glasses of water maybe that is why I don't cough.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Lisinopril for a while now and I too have developed the cough. I go every 4 to 6 months for a checkup so during one of my visits my doctor was listening to my chest and I asked her if my lungs were ok and she said yes but I told her about this cough and she told me that it could be the bp medicine and since I have acid reflux disease try taking Prilosec everyday which I have done and my cough is much better. I can tell when I have not taken the Prilosec because my cough comes back. Hope this well help some of you with that dry cough.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Lisinopril for many years and have developed a mild anemia. My primary care physican says there is no correlation, but my hematologist says there is a definite connecion -- that Lisinopril suppresses the protein the kidneys sent to the bone marrow for production of red blood cells. My wife was on Lisinopril and also developed anemia. When her doctor switched her to a different blood pressure medication, the anemia resolved.

Any information or verification would be appreciated.

Question/Comment:

I'm a 62 year old male who has been on simvastatin for a few years. About 6 weeks ago I started having pains in my leg muscles. I thought I had strained something at first but the pain did not go away and in fact got worse. I finally went to my doctor who prescribed a pain medicine and mentioned in passing about side effects from simvastatin. The pain medication didn't help all that much, but after stopping the use of simvastation the pain has abated quite a bit. I believe it will be gone in a few more days.

I had the same side effect which really left me feeling disabled. My doctor changed my medication and it took care of my symptons.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Lisinopril for some time. I have also had a cough for awhile and it finally got to the point that I wanted to do something about it. I have been to a nose and throat specialist and have an appointment for a chest exam.
After other possible side effects with another drug, I checked the side effects for Lisinopril and found a cough to the the main one. If this is the cause of my cough I will be disappointed in my doctor in not considering this possibility.

64 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I began taking Lisinopril in August of this year, and on October 20th went to see my doctor because of this tickling in my throat that was causing me to cough. He suggested that I go to an ENT, which I did the following day, and had my throat scoped. Everything was okay, but he looked at the medications I was taking and told me that my coughing problem could very well be caused by Lisinopril. Since I also have sinus problems, he changed my medication to something a little stronger and more effective and also prescribed Nasonex. It slowed the cough a little temporarily, but the cough still persisted and tomorrow, I am changing to a new blood pressure medication - the fourth. It is unfortunate that I must get off of Lisinopril because it was doing the job. I only wished I had switched before going through all this trouble. Good Luck to you.

I am a 47 year old black female who was prescribed Lisinopril 12.5 mg per day, I immediately felt better, the fog in my head disappeared but I began coughing violently so bad it interfered with work and sleep. My doctor changed my medicine it been 11 days, the cough is better but still there. Does anyone know how long it will take the cough to disappear? Should this be a concern?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have been taking Lisinopril for about 2 years now. My doctor warned me that one possible side effect was a small cough. He said it would probably be no worse that one small short cough as if to clear your throat. He said some people can deal with it and some can't. He also said that if I developed it and could not deal with it that there were other drugs that could do the same thing for me. I have been lucky enough not to have developed this side effect.

Question/Comment:

I am a 68 yr. old female. I had foot surgery (elective) last Jan. which did not go well. Before that I was taking atenolol for elevated bp with no problems. My bp went up after surgery and my family Dr. put me on hydrothiazide with not much results, so he added lisinopril--now my bp is fine. After taking so much pain meds, Vicodin-later ibuprofin, I learned these can mess up bp meds. No wonder the atenolol didn't work. I now take the meds at night because of the fatigue. Can these meds cause stomach problems, such as lactose intolerance? Oh, well, at my age I don't need to drink milk and I certainly don't need ice cream.

My husband takes---

Prazosin HCL 1mg capsule one at AM, two at evening
Metoprolol Tartrate 50 mg tablet 1/2 tab twice a day
Rosuvastatin CA 20 mg 1/2 tablet a day
Amlodipine Besylate 5mg tab one a day

He is always dizzy. Really bad today. Do any of these medications do that to him?

Question/Comment:

My husband has been taking METOPROLOL 100 MG TABLET CAR in the morning for the last two years with no side affects. Lately the Dr. also prescribed LISINOPRIL-HCTZ 20-12.5 MG TEV for Gary to take at lunchtime which is lowering his blood pressure. The question is he has had two episodes where he has gotten cold sweats and feels very weak when following this plan. Both within two weeks of each other. He realized he had not been drinking enough water in the afternoon and evening, since watching his water intake to include 8 - 8oz glasses or more daily he has not had this reaction. Anyone out there with similar issues?

69 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have taken 40 mg. of Lisinopril for about two years now. Although, it has lowered my blood pressure significantly, I have noticed that has had several side affects with me. I have found out that it brings on mild Anxiety attacks as well at heart palpitations which is unfortunate since the drug seems to work well for my blood pressure. I will consult with my doctor now for another alternative for lowering my blood pressure.

I had no idea that my night time cough was related to the medication. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the information regarding the coughing at night. I am a 48 year old female that has been on Lisinopril for almost 2 years now to lower my blood pressure also.
I often wondered what brought on the night coughs that sometimes turned into bronchitis or upper respiratory problems that required a doctor's visit to the same doctor that prescribed the Lisinopril for me.

Thanks again for the sympton info!

I take Lisinopril 30MG for BP. I also take Metoprolol 50MG for increased heart rate. It is common! Ask your doctor if this might be a solution for you.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

After 30 days on 10 mg lisinopril I went by ambulance to the emergency room with chest tightness and difficulty breathing in the middle of the night. All tests were fine except an elevated pancreas enzyme was discovered. Now I'm on a progressive diet for 10 days beginning with only clear liquids and building up to a bland very low fat diet. I have follow up appointment with physician next week to see if further tests are required.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I am a 45 y/o white female, and I believe I was having similar symptoms after about two months of Lisinopril, 20 mg daily. I also had the cough, so my Dr. took me off of it. But I had episodes of heart pounding and chest tightness. I was worried to the point I wondered if I was heading toward a heart attack. I am overweight and diabetic. I am relieved to find that someone else was having similar symptoms (although I am sorry you are having to experience them). Consult with your Doctor-maybe there is a better medication out there for you.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Last year doctor put me on 10 mg. lisinopril by day 3 had cough, tachycardia, dizziness, and by day 5 point where had to go to urgent care as also had wheeze, unable to eat or drink and keep anything down coughing more than not. ER physician said go off told me to return to the prescriber after the weekend, doing so his response was go back on ER docs rule out a whole class of drugs too quickly. Went on one day and all returned with a vengence, took two months off to resolve at all and ever since despite being OFF that medication for 14 months now continue to be stuck with the chronic cough, and asthma like congestion wheeze since that time (periodically inability to keep things down as a result of cough severity. Given it was ill-prescribed to begin with i.e. b.p not any recent chance the only high range reading inaccurate because individual used a too small cuff, whereas others are variable and could go back 20 yrs. and find some same or higher. Prescribing based upon medical guideline changes where saying over 120 is...which not all agree with.
6 months off, experiencing one episode seen at another facility chest exray was okay, P.A. take was allergic reaction. Which led me to look on-line to see what I could find and appears a known side affect of this drug (in my case perhaps unusual in that occurred so quickly and additional symptoms) for persons on for a length of time and then going off is to be stuck with a chronic life-long cough after discontinuation. Where prescribing physician facility is quick to note adverse reactions relative to other from alternate facilities, interestingly despite letter from ER doctor and other, the prescribing physician still had no mention in his notes when I was triaged to him for an unrelated visit (not by choice) but since seeing again attempted to address, and also noted found it "interesting" he hadn't bothered to even mention it in his notes, as with other at the facility, trying to pretend didn't exist, happen irrespective of documentation and fact to contrary (more instances, issues than only this drug) instead of acknowledging, just says "I think your depressed" never mind what actually is, or the patient thinks is medically relevant. Very convenient way to excuse everything from failing to test, diagnose, appropriately treat, refer, take responsibility for errors. My advise this OR ANY OTHER drug a physician prescribes BEFORE taking read all the literature, do an online search on the mfg. site or pharmaceutical site and look up all the potential side effects/interactions common or rare. My experience has been too many instances end up with the purportedly rare or worse. Which leads me/should lead all consumers to question if they are indeed as rare and unusual, unforeseen as those prescribing or promoting would have patients believe.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Leg and back pain is not a commonly reported side effect of Lisinopril. However, iGuard has received some reports of muscle pain - less than 1% of members taking lisinopril reported muscle pain. There are other medications available to treat high blood pressure but it is difficult to recommend a specific medication since blood pressure medication is often tailored for your medical conditions or other medications. Talk to your doctor about your back and leg pain and ask him or her which other medications are available for you. This is also a good opportunity to review non-medical treatments for high blood pressure with your doctor - such as maintaining a healthy low-salt diet, maintaining a healthy weight, increasing physical activity, and stopping smoking.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I too have had pain in my upper back, in the lung area. I am noticing that if I do not take the pill for a few days, I do not have this pain. I also have occasional pain in my leg. I have been taking note so that I can tell my doctor.

Answer/Reply:

I am a 71 year old woman and I have been taking Lisinopril 40mg for a very long time. Did not have any problems, so I thought, but in reading your comment I have to say I too, have been having back pains in the sciatic area and thigh pains. Not enough to disable me, but enough to say I feel somewhat stiff after sitting for a long time. Do you take any other meds with the lisinopril because I didn't experience any of this until a while after having additonal meds added to my 'daily regime' of pills.

I have been on Lisinopril 2.5mg for approximately six weeks. My doctor put me on it to protect my kidneys as I am on glucophage XR for Insulin Resistance and recently my LDL is 170 so now I am on Pravachol 20mg. I have not been able to sleep for approx. 10days now. I do have a cold which turned into Bronchitis, but never have I had Insomnia like now. Taking 2 tylenol pms did not phase me. I am worried about DRUG intereactions. I currently take: Pravachol 20mg, Glucophage XR 500mg (3) with my evening meal. Lisinipril 2.5mg, Vit E 400mg, Centrum Silver, and ocassional ADVIL liquid gel caps and Sudafed PE. Can you help me? Last night at the ER I was given Augmentin and Phenergan for my bronchitis.

57 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

If you have kidney problems you are NOT suppose to ingest Advil. This is harmful to your kidneys. Also the Sudafed should be avoided at night because it will make you hyper. My best wishes are with you.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Vitamin E will cause insomnia. There is no normal dose for Vitamin E, you must find your own tolerance, Stop taking E and see if normal sleep returns. Vitamin E is oil soluable and will build up in the body if not consumed by activity or exercise, the build up can cause sleep issues. You must find a level of E comensurate with your activity level.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Advil ( and many ofher NSAID drugs) are not to be taken with Lisinopril.

I've been taking Lisinopril 10mg since 9/2006. I don't use it for any of the above conditions. My doctor prescribed it to me to take care of my endocrine system(kidneys, liver, etc.). I am a Type II diabetic and seems to be doing me well. No drug reactions or side effects. If you are a Type II diabetic, you may discuss it with you doctor about the possibility of being placed on Lisinopril to protect those important vital organs we need so much.

I started taking lisinopril this year (10mg/day). Then, I developed severe knee-joint pain in one leg only (the other knee swelled up and so did my ankle on the other leg - which only came and went. This situation went on for several months until I started asking some folks about this and it was recommended to give up caffeinated food products. I was told that diet Pepsi products were especially not good for joint health, but since I decided to kick the caffeine habit the Pepsi was included with my self-imposed ban. I can walk w/o the knee pain again but it bugs me a bit during the night when I knock knees together or roll over suddenly - and this wakes me up. I can now get out of bed again without having first to sit on the edge of the bed and prepare for shock of pain in the knees. The only other drug I'm using is a ZOCOR generic 10mg/day. And that's MY story, not sure if there's any substance to it or not!!
