I like to switch from lisinopril and atenenol and back to lisinopril every few days so the body
wouldn't build up an immune system. For wrist pain I take 3000 mg of natural sulfur supplement daily.I think all blood preassure pills take out the sulfur from the body. Here is one of the websites
that you can purchase sulfur.

I'm 59 year old male and I'v been controling by high blood preassure for the past 10 years.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
At this time, there is not a lot of information about side effects in patients who use lisinopril for more than 10 years. However, in general use, muscle pain/stiffness has been reported by less than 1% of iGuard members taking lisinopril. If this symptom continues to bother you or gets worse, you should follow up with your physician.

I have been taking Lisinopril (5 mg daily) for 6 years. I never had a problem with hip or leg pain or weakness until my doctor started me on Lipitor. Since the pains started I have been taken off the Lipitor, put on Zocor, taken off Zocor, put on Pravachol, taken off the Pravachol. At this point I'm not taking any cholesterol medication. The leg pains are getting less, but the weakness has persisted.

I have been taking Lisinopril (20mg)x2 for about 5 yrs or so along with Hydrochlorot (50 mg) and Afeditab (60mg)cr and around this time last year I was laid up out of work due to lower back pain and pain and numbness in my left leg.The pain was so bad pain pills wouldn't ease it.I had all kinds of xrays and other test done and they could find nothing. Its some what better now but now I am having finger, wrist and arm pain.
After reading all that has been said in the replys to this question I am curious, I am about to talk to my Doctor about this.Maybe the Lisinopril doesn't mix with these other drugs. Thanks, If I hear anything I will let you know.

Dear Sir; lots of things can cause liver and kidney failure. My personal opinion is that it is caused by the inert ingredients in your Meds. Try drinking a glass of cranberry juice evry day to flush these inert ingredients. But PLEASE check with your Doctor ,before taking my advice as I am only human. That is what works for me. My doctor had me on a small dose of lisinopril(like 5mcg) AND hydrochlorothiazide(I think 10mcg).I took both pills daily and it finally brought mine under control,so you may want to ask
your doctor if it is right for you.Everyone is different, and sometimes you have to try a few different things like I did before you finally hit on something that works for you. By the way, hydrochlorothiazide is inexpensive (thank God!) and you can usually get a month's supply for around 4 to 7 dollars at Walmart or Fred's.Hope this helps!

It keeps my blood pressure about 114/70 most of the time and I have had my dosage reduced as my blood pressure was dropping too low which never happened with my other meds that I had used before. I like this one and hope it continues to work as well as has been for me.

My husband started on Lisonopril less than a month ago. He immediately had stomach problems tha he never had before. At first, we thought it was the flu, but it wasn't. He woke up one morning with a terrible stomach ache. i took him to the emergency ward thinking he was having a heart attack. It turns out it was the Lisinopril and it casued Pancreatitis. They said its a rare side effect of Lisnopril. I wonder if anyone else has had this happen to them. He can never again take any of the statin drugs now. He continues to have problems.

Lisinopril belongs to a class of drugs that is known to cause a cough. Other side effects include itching/rash, swelling, dizziness and tiredness. However, many patients take lisinopril without experiencing any side effects.
If any of these side effects become bothersome, please notify your physician in order to assess other possible treatment options. If you experience any actual fainting or swelling in the facial area that interferes with your ability to breath or swallow, it is important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

Answer/Reply:
After taking Lisinopril for 10 years with no ill effects, I started experiencing rare and inexplicable swelling of my lips. Over time the incidents increased in frequency and severity. I had read that such swelling is a rare but possible side effect of Lisinopril, so I shared this information with my cardiologist, who thought (as did I) that it was unlikely related to Lisinopril due to my long history of untroubled use and the randomness of the onsets. After a particularly severe swelling I was referred to an allergist who insisted that I stop Lisinopril immediately. I switched to Diovan and have had no swelling incidents since.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Lisinopril may be the cause of the swelling and it can happen at any time while taking the medication. Swelling of the mouth, extremities (hands and feet), as well as the throat are serious side effects of the drug that need evaluation by a doctor. Swelling of the legs and feet can also be signs of other serious medical conditions like blood clots or heart failure. If you are still bothered by these symptoms, please follow up with your doctor immediately.

these?
65 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
There are many things that may cause those symptoms you are experiencing, it is not necessarily caused by the medication. Currently hearing loss and severe intolerance to heat has not been reported with the use of Lisinopril. Ringing in the ears has been reported with Lisinopril, but it is not common, less than 1 in 100 patients reported this during clinical trials. It may be a good idea to discuss your symptoms with your doctor to make sure something more serious is not going on.

I have heard that Celery and Bok Choy help with blood pressure, and I recently heard that bananas do the same. However being diabetic make sure to adjust your insulin dose to compenste for the banana. Tell your Dr. about it and see what they say. I eat a banana a day and my blood pressure is coming into range. I used to take up to 3 blood pressure medications a day, but now I take only one...Lisinopril. It helps with blood pressure as well as slowing up kidney damage. Also a little help with blood sugar levels is to eat cinnamon with your meals...it helps to regulate blood sugar levels...I think it helps the insulin to work better. By the way I have been a type 1 diabetic for 27 yeas now and I plan on living to at least 107! Take care. Peace, Love and Health to you!

I have been taking lisinopril for about 10 years and have not had this problem.
However, perhaps it is the inactive ingredients in the generic (fillers, binders), that are disagreeing with you. Perhaps your pharmacy could fill the prescription from a different supplier, or you should ask your doctor for a sample dosage of Zestril (the brand) to see if it makes a difference.

Lisinopril is a generic drug and can be manufactured by any number of companies. I have been taking one 20 mg. tablet per day for several years and it is on Wal-Mart Pharmacy's $4.00 formulary. That's $4.00 for a 30 day supply. You may also be able to get a 90 day supply from Wal-Mart Pharmacy for $10.00. If you do get on welfare, this prescription may be even less or free.

Have you tried getting the generic for it? That is what I take and it is $4.00. Might help until you get assistance.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
There is a generic for Zestril that is very inexpensive. Most pharmacies sell it for anywhere from $4.00 to $6.00 for a month's supply. That is very reasonable. Make sure your doctor writes it for the generic and then call around to different pharmacies to see who has the best price.
Posted: 2009-03-05 19:08:27
Answer/Reply:
Hi There, not sure if you've gotten an answer to your question regarding the drug Zestril, but I too am on this medication and it is not too expensive if you get the generic version of it. The generic name is Lisinopril. It works just as good and I think this is on Walmart's list of $4.00 prescriptions/month. You can also get a 90 day supply for $10.00.
If you are on disability through social security, you can also register for part D (prescription drug coverage) You should qualify for help on your prescriptions and all you have to do is call social security and let them know your situation. They will take your information over the phone to see if you can qualify for assistance on your prescriptions and health insurance premiums and co pays. You will recieve an answer in the mail and if you do qualify, you won't have to worry about meds anymore. Depending on what prescription D plan you're in, your co pays will be reasonable. I think most generics are around2.50/month and name brand are $6.00/month.
Also, you may want to let your doctor know your situation and he/she probably has samples they can give you until you qualify for assistance on your medical costs.

Question/Comment:
I am a 41 year old female taking 20mg of Lisinopril daily. I had high blood pressure before taking Lisinopril (220/110). I started taking it 5 days ago and while my blood pressure had decreased tremendously (approx. 137/73), I am experiencing terrible side effects. Horrible stomach pains after I eat that last for hours and hours (if I don't eat anything, they don't come), itchiness, dizziness (mostly after 3:00 p.m. I take my pill in the mornings), ear ache in my right ear (again, happens after 3:00 p.m.) and lethargy. I also take Prilosec and I have Lupus... this information is known by my doctor.
Just wondering if anyone else is having the same (or some of the same) side effects. Fortunately I don't have the coughing and dry throat.
Thanks in advance.

I am a diabetic and have been on Lisinopril for about 8 yrs. The symptoms you describe started when my doctor increased my dosage from 20 to 40 mg. Most of the time, the bottom of my feet burn, the inner side of one arm felt as if it was being scraped with a razor blade. Lately my tongue burns at night and have been suffering from the so called dry eye syndrome. The dryness occurs on all my mucous membranes, though, but I thought it was a side effect of the diabetes. The dry feeling also increased when my doctor gave me metformin (sugar pill) and simvastatin (to lowel cholesterol) I am 54 yrs old. Lisinopril does help, but now I have side effects that affect my daily life and work. The dry eye especially is exasperating. I have started to exercise quite a bit, and have invested in good natural health products. They seem to help a lot. I've always been on a "healthy" diet and not overweight, but I do stress a lot. The burning subsides when I sweat a lot. When I can't exercise I try to go to the sauna, but it's a constant battle. The topical creams do not help since this is an internal problem. Please read on the Omega oils as they might help you as they do me. Recently I found a combination of flax oil, fish oil, and borage oil. There are a lot of natural products out there to help you. All we can is keep trying. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

I'm taking lisinopril, metoprolol er, plavix, pravachol & 81mg aspirin, daily. At least one of these other meds can also cause itching, apparently, so I can't say definitively that it's the lisinopril causing mine.
Itching & mild burning in my feet, and itching in the groin/upper thigh area. Fortunately the more embarassing aspect doesn't manifest often when I'm in public. *groan* It's enough to drive one off the deep end at times! I'm sorry you're going through it, but it makes me feel a little better to know that I'm not imagining things or suffering something potentially contagious or serious.

Yes. I have tingling and numbness in my left thumb (called parathesia). It started 2 days after I began taking lisinopril to control my blood pressure. This is the problem with most drugs....the side effects can be as bad as the ailment.
What works for one person does not work well for others. Just too many possibilities of bad side effects. That is why they post so many warnings on cholesterol meds. and many other meds. Looks like I will need to change my blood pressure medication or try to control it with a better lifestyle (diet & exercise). At least they have no side effects.
See if your doctor can prescribe another medication that has less side effects.
Good luck!

Clearly, these types of bp meds share related side effects which, in my case occur durring the night which is sufficient to regularly disrupt an attempt for a good night's sleep.

My doctor recently put me on Lisinopril, and then increased the dosage to 10mg.
Since the increase, I have "burning/tingling" of my lips, and it is most annoying.
Even more annoying is the fact that my blood pressure is not coming down, so
perhaps I will be changed to another drug. I cannot imagine going on a higher
dosage and having more of this feeling.

I suffer from chronic kidney failure. My kidney specialist told me that it's from all the years of taking medications to control my blood pressure. I started taking meds when I was 20 and am now 75. Lisinopril does control my blood pressure as long as I take a diuretic with it. I don't seem to have any side effects from the lisinopril unless I take it shortly after eating. Your ob/gyn should be able to do some tests and sonograms to assess the baby's situation. iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
SIDE EFFECTS: First doses of lisinopril can cause dizziness due to a drop in blood pressure. Lisinopril can cause nausea, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, drowsiness, nasal congestion and sexual dysfunction. Lisinopril should be stopped if there are symptoms or signs of an allergic reaction including feelings of swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) and hives occasionally occur. Rarely, lisinopril may cause a drop in red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Lisinopril can impair the function of the kidneys, and every person taking this medication should have their kidney function checked.
I almost went over the side of a mountain because of no information of the side effects. MAKE SURE either your doctor or pharmacist tells you of ALL the possible side effects. My doctor and I are no long speaking.

For muscle weakness I would start with any chlosterol lowering (statins) drugs such as Lescol, Mevacor, Lipitor, Pravachol, Crestor, Zocor or Vytorin, The higher the dose, the more likely you will notice muscle weakness. I was on 80 mg (a high dose) of Vytorin and woke up one day and could not use my legs. After I stopped the medication it took two months to regain full use of my legs.

The exact same thing happened to my mom. She was erroneously put on 80 mg of Liptitor although she had only been on 20 mg before that. The office staff at her doctors office called it in wrong and she had taken that dose for months and then one day could not hold her self up and walk. She was hospitalized but they would not really admit it was the Lipitor. She refused to take it and after a few weeks was doing fine.

Answer/Reply:
What I did to get rid of the cough was to take half in the morning and half at night. If you have a blood pressure cuff at home, check your BP on a regular schedule, and if you see it's staying controlled, try to decrease the amount, even 1/4 less of a tablet might help. I drive my doctor nuts because I do this with everything, but I'm a nurse, and keep good track of all my tests, whether it's blood sugar, blood pressure, liver panel, etc.
Don't depend on just medicine to get your pressure down. If you need to lose weight, think of eating right as "a pill". If you can get to a mall to walk, think of that 45 min walk as BETTER than a pill. You'll find dozens of people at any given time doing the same, and maybe will find someone to walk with to help you keep it up. Remind yourself that everything matters. What you put in your mouth has to be processed by your body. You won't sleep as well if you don't move during the day. Walking is a good time to pray, so you can be blessing others as you help yourself.
