I have been taking Lisinpril for about two years. Last week I had a life threatening side effect from the drug. It started with my toungue swelling rapidly and then extreme swelling of the throat and vocal chords. A co-worker rushed me to an urgent care where they started IV's immediately. I was there for four hours for monitoring and meds. Later that night my husband had to rush me to the ER where they started more IV's. I could not breath or swallow by thtat time. This was a near death experience. I was in ICU until the next day. It took a few days before the swelling went down. Has anyone else had this happen to them? This was a very frightening experience. All Dr's (7 of them) were in agreement that this medication was the cause.

Answer/Reply:
The type and severity of your reaction, which is called angioedema, is not common. It is considered an allergic reaction. It is important moving forward that you record this event with all of your health care providers including your doctor, your pharmacist, as well as others including, for example, your dentist. As a rule anyone who could prescribe or dispense medication or treat any health conditions should be aware and record this event on your behalf to avoid its recurrence.

I've been taking 20 mg Lisinopril once daily, for high blood pressure, for several years, and it does a very good job of keeping my BP under good control. I am diabetic and take both Lantus and Metformin, and I have never had any low blood sugar episodes wile taking all three of these medications. The main side effect I have from Lisinopril is if I bend over and stand up too fast, I feel a little dizzy, but it goes away quickly. Sometimes I get a dry tickle and an annoying cough (no apparent cause, except perhaps it's a side effect of the Lisinopril?), but drinking water usually helps it stop. In general, I'm pleased with how this medication works for me and my doctor feels it is the nest one for me to take at this time.

Hair loss can occur while taking lisinopril. If this side effect concerns you, you may want to discuss it with your doctor and ask your doctor to consider changing your medication. Side effects like this usually stop after the medication is stopped. However, sometimes it may not be the case.

I have been on Lisionpril since January 2009. When I first started using the drug I was loosing my hair in handfuls. I had a lot of itching too. The hair loss went on for about three or four months, then it stopped. At one point it was so back that I could rub my hair and draw back and large hair ball. That was frightening! I was beginning to think I had cancer and that I needed to see another doctor. Then all of a sudden the hair loss stopped. My hair grew back.

Feeling dizzy, tired, and wheezing are side effects reported while on lisinopril. It is possible to have kidney function issues while taking lisinopril, but since your tests were negative, that is likely not an issue. If your symptoms continue or become worse, speak with the physician who prescribed the lisinopril and see if he/she wants you to continue taking it or you may need to be switched to a different medication to lower your blood pressure.

If son still having trouble sleeping he may have a side effect of lisinopril that affects his sleep. Also if he is on other meds there may be a reaction. Ask pharmacist if this is side effect or call the drug company that makes lisinopril and ask the questions. If so then they can send the new information to you or your doctor.

Trouble sleeping or insomnia is not a common side effect of lisinopril. In fact, the prescribing information for lisinopril does not list this as a reported side effect. The options to help him sleep will depend on his conditions and medical history. It would be best to talk to his physician, or have him talk to his physician, about his trouble sleeping so that the underlying cause can be found and treated.

I too have experienced those same issues with cough and difficulty sleeping. My doctor recommended that I try over the counter Melatonin and it has worked for me. It is available in 1, 2 and 3 MG, you may want to try 1 MG first and increase slowly. While I do not believe it to be harmful, too high a dosage may cause you to be drowsy or over sleep.

Question/Comment:
Hmm, all this talk about 'coughing' while on lisinopril... I had it added to my previous prescription of hydrochlorothiazide a few months ago; since then I have been coughing A LOT!
I must say I also have a post-nasal drip and that also makes me cough; but the coughing became worse after starting the lisinopril.
I recently added nasonex and that has helped somewhat, since this cough seemed to arise mostly from the constant drip in the back of my throat causing me to clear my throat almost constantly... so I'm not sure if its from the lisinopril but I sure will ask my doctor next time I go!
Thanks for the heads up!

I started with Lisinopril, 10mg, on July, 17th, 2009; in addition to Metropolol, 50mg.
I noticed that suddendly and for seconds I was loosing my voice. Little by little itching and cough was added also, a continuous running nose. Cough was worst at night because of the position.
One time I felt like my throat was closing so much I couldn't breath. Still I couldn't relate this sympthomes to any respiratory development.
Then I received the IGUARD email and read the commentaries from people on the same medication. Thanks! I suspend Lisinopril and my doctor gave me Benicar HCT 20mg/12.5mg to try. for 3 weeks. I'm still worry to take it since, the Lisinopril still will be there.

Coughing is a side effect of taking lisinopril, in fact it is one of the most common side effects of iGuard patients. The cough from lisinopril is usually a dry cough. A small percent of patients taking lisinopril have reported weight gain. However, despite these side effects, 79% of patients in the iGuard community feel that the positive effects of lisinopril outweigh the negative.

Hmm. Well, I certainly can't say for sure whether or not my foot pain is related but I do get seemingly random VERY painful cramping in my right foot. I was switched to lisinopril in I think no more than the past two years from another blood pressure medication, Vasotec, that I'd been on for as long as I can remember before that. I'm 99% sure those two changes (the cramps and the Lisinopril) came at pretty much the same time. So you might be on to something. :o/

I have been taking Prinivil (brand name for Lisinopril) for 15 years.
I can't take the generic, because it does not let me think clearly.
My ears started ringing as soon as I started taking Prinivil. I also
got an intolerance to heat. After taking it for 15 years, I have lost
hearing in my right ear to the point that a hearing aid cannot help me. I have tried many other bp medicines, but cannot use them because of intolerable dizziness.

Answer/Reply:
Lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide can be taken together. Manufacturers have put lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide into a combination tablet to make it easier to remember to take and so that patients have one less tablet to swallow. The expected results are the same if you take them separate as two tablets or in combination as one tablet. Having fewer pills to take can help patients with taking their medication as prescribed.

Question/Comment:
70 years old female

Question/Comment:
Iam a 50 year old female was taking Lisinopril 10mg for 54 days--started coughing within the first few days, continue to get worse. My blood pressure was perfect. I felt great! But the coughing was just awful, could'nt sleep at night and I work with the public and coughing all the time. I also took Diovan 10mg that was awful too. Intense itching, hives and stomach pain. I was miserable. Just tonight I started taking Plendil 5mg. Praying that this one will work for me.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Coughing is a side effect of taking lisinopril, in fact it is one of the most common side effects of iGuard patients. The cough from lisinopril is usually a dry cough. A small percent of patients taking lisinopril have reported weight gain. However, despite these side effects, 79% of patients in the iGuard community feel that the positive effects of lisinopril outweigh the negative.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Approximately 0.8% ( less than 1%) of patients taking Lisonopril reported paresthesias as a side effect based on the manufacturer's clinical trials. Paresthesias are defined as a tingling, prickly feeling, many times concentrate in your fingers and toes as you describe.

Question/Comment:
My son was prescribed Lisinopril for high blood pressure. He has been taking it since the last of June of this year.He is 18 years old. He has been coughing alot since he started taking it. He also, has allergies. He takes shots for that. He does take spells coughing because of the allergies, but they don't last long. That's why I'm concerned about the high blood pressure medication. Is their something he can take to stop the cough? Or is their something else he can take for his high blood pressure? Thanks

Member Answer/Reply:
I have been taking Prinivil (brand name for Lisinopril) for 15 years.
I can't take the generic, because it does not let me think clearly.
My ears started ringing as soon as I started taking Prinivil. I also
got an intolerance to heat. After taking it for 15 years, I have lost
hearing in my right ear to the point that a hearing aid cannot help me. I have tried many other bp medicines, but cannot use them because of intolerable dizziness.

I had taken Lisinopril for about 18 months, then I developed a cough that I could not get rid of, I had it for over 8 weeks! My general doctor thought nothing of it, but when I went to my neurologist he made a suggestion to my gen. doc and I was put on Cozaar and within about a week I lost the cough!

I WOULD LIKE MORE INFO ON THIS AS WELL.
I TO HAVE BEEN TAKING LISINOPRIL 20MG / HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE 25MG. STARTED OUT AS A 1 PILL COMBO, THEN TWO PILLS BUT SAME MEDS. PERSCRIBED BY ONE DOCTOR, MODIFIED BY ANOTHER. AFTER ABOUT 6 MONTHS HE INCREASED LIS-TO 40MG. 6 MONTHS LATER (6/22/10) HE HAS TAKEN ME COMPLETELY OFF THE HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE. I'M ALL FOR FEWER PILLS BUT WOULD LIKE TO KNOW EFFECTS OF SEPERATING OR COMBINING THESE MEDS.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide can be taken together. Manufacturers have put lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide into a combination tablet to make it easier to remember to take and so that patients have one less tablet to swallow. The expected results are the same if you take them separate as two tablets or in combination as one tablet. Having fewer pills to take can help patients with taking their medication as prescribed.
