Question/Comment:

Does any one else have chronic foot pain? I have been taking Lisinopril for a few years now and I have developed pain in the bottoms of my feet.

Answer/Reply:

Hmm. Well, I certainly can't say for sure whether or not my foot pain is related but I do get seemingly random VERY painful cramping in my right foot. I was switched to lisinopril in I think no more than the past two years from another blood pressure medication, Vasotec, that I'd been on for as long as I can remember before that. I'm 99% sure those two changes (the cramps and the Lisinopril) came at pretty much the same time. So you might be on to something. :o/

Question/Comment:

My son was prescribed Lisinopril for high blood pressure. He has been taking it since the last of June of this year.He is 18 years old. He has been coughing alot since he started taking it. He also, has allergies. He takes shots for that. He does take spells coughing because of the allergies, but they don't last long. That's why I'm concerned about the high blood pressure medication. Is their something he can take to stop the cough? Or is their something else he can take for his high blood pressure? Thanks

Question/Comment:

Has anyone developed significant ringing or ear noises- and loss of hearing using this drug? Thanks!

Question/Comment:

I had taken Lisinopril for about 18 months, then I developed a cough that I could not get rid of, I had it for over 8 weeks! My general doctor thought nothing of it, but when I went to my neurologist he made a suggestion to my gen. doc and I was put on Cozaar and within about a week I lost the cough!

Question/Comment:

I TAKE LISINOPRIL 20MG / HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE. HOW IS THAT DIFFERENT FROM JUST PLAIN LISINOPRIL

59 year old Female

Question/Comment:

I was perscribed lisinopril by my dr. to help control high blood pressure. Recently I started having severe muscle cramps all over my body but particularly in the area of my ribcage and my hands cramp up all the time. I went to dr. and he ordered chest xray, ekg, and complete blood workup. Could find no reason for the cramping and said he thought it was caused by working in the heat I live in a very humid hot climate. But now that I read all this info on Lisinopril I wonder if it could be the cause of my problem. I also experience severe dizziness at times.

Answer/Reply:

Hi I took Lisinopril 5mg. for 6 month and notice a cough and a funny feeling, llike a feather is my troat, that kept me up at night.
So I was talking to a girl friend of my's, and my sister-in-law, and they both said the same.
So I called a pharmactist, and he looked it up. And a side effect, was coughing.
When I call and told the Doctor, she knew right away what I was talking about. So she put me on Altace 2.5mg, and it make me cough a day. When I talk a lot, or walk fast.

I am a 62 yr old female and have been on lisinopril for the last 2+ years; and I too am experiencing cramping in my rib cage and in my hands as well as in my legs and feet. My Dr. could find no cause or reason for this cramping. After reading all the literature on the side effects of lisinopril, I too think it is a side effect of the drug. I mentioned this to my Dr. and she said that the side effects were tollerable considering my cardiac history. I have had 3 heart attacks and have many stents. My heart is only working at about 30% capasity and the damage is beyond surgical repair. So, I guess I am stuck with the cramps. Wish there was a different medication to take--the cramps can be and are very severe and disabling at times.

63 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Lisinopril has been reported to cause muscle cramps and joint pain, although dizziness is more frequently reported. However, 79% of iGuard patients feel that the benefits of lisinopril outweigh the negatives. Staying hydrated is also important for helping to reduce cramping symptoms. Continue to monitor your side effects and if anything gets worse, report it to your doctor.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Lisinopril 20-25mg 1x's a day for 2yrs, and I wake up tired, go to bed tired & now my right kidney have swollen . 46 year old female

46 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking Lisinopril 25mg 1x day for 5 yrs now to support kidney function affected by another RX. I am always weak, tired, listless and my lips are constantly chapped even after I apply lip balms. I buy approx. 6 tubes of ointments a month. The other side effect noticed seems to be swelling of the hands. 61 yr old female

56 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I was only on Lisinopril for hpertention a couple of months when I got a bladder or kidney infection (the Dr wasn't sure which).

I switched back to Norvasc and have had no side affects. Except for the short time on Lisinopril I have been on this med for about 4 years. I only got off due to an effort to save money. Walmart carried Lisinopril.

Question/Comment:

I experienced swelling in my lower lip and cheek (angioedema) resulting in an emergency room visit this past weekend. The doctor and nurses all said it was a reaction to my Lisinopril. Even though I have been taking it for 5 years, they said it can happen at any time. It is listed in the side effects, but not one of the top 10 or so. The Lisinopril I was taking had a diuretic with it. I know I read the side effects back when I started taking it, but did not realize that the swelling was a well known side effect.

52 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I take Lisinopril and have had no side affects at all but it is very possible that its the diuretic that gave you the problems that you are having. I am one of those people that can not take a diuretic at all I seem to be allergic to them all. My doctor just keeps me on the Lisinopril and it seem to keep everything else at bay. I take herbs to help with everything else I don't know if this helped you at all but I wish you luck.

Answer/Reply:

I am 52 years old and had been on 2.5 mg of lisinopril for about 4 years, and had never noticed any problem. About 2 weeks ago, I woke up to the feeling like I had something caught in my throat and all my extremities and face terribly swollen. Needless to say, I no longer take lisinopril. I spent 24 hours in the hospital for observation. Such a scary feeling.

Question/Comment:

While hospitalized for the 2nd attack of unexplained pancreatitis in an 18 mo. period Dr. came across info. that suggested a very rare connection of lisinopril and pancreatitis, so rare it did not have to be reported as a side-effect. I had been using lisinopril for hypertension for 5+ years. Within days of dropping the lisinopril all of my blood levels related to pancreatic function normalized and have had no problems for the past 5 years.

Question/Comment:

I'm a 56 year old female, take 20mg of lisinopril and started to get a light cough and my lips are very chapped all the time, always tired and get out of breath fast. Only been on it for a month. I used to take cozaar. Had no side affects with that but to expensive. Any alternatives?

57 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

There are many alternatives to control your blood pressure with less side effects. Some of your side effects reported above are significant and you should contact your doctor so he can do a full assessment and make the best recommended product switch. In addition, your doctor may want to evaluate if the lisinopril is causing the shortness of breath or if there is another cause.

Answer/Reply:

For the past three weeks, my lips have been chapped and swollen. They're even chapped all around the outside of my lips. I've been taking Lisinopril for 11 months. I thought it might be one of my medications, but I'm on six different ones. Now I know what it might be. Thank you for sharing this information.

Answer/Reply:

I am a 58 year old male, I have been taking lisinopril for the past 2 years (20mg), I have experienced splits and soreness in the corners of my mouth every so often and it may be from lisinopril. I have also experienced a shortness of breath and get very tired quickly, recently. I have taken stress tests and breathing tests and was found to be ok. You have given me something to talk to my doctor about. Thank you.

58 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

The Cozaar patent expires in 2010 and then generic should be available.

Cozaar is not available from the VA, they substituted Amlodipine Besylate. My coughing is less and Blood Pressure is usually less than 120/73 (better regulated than with Lisinopril).

Question/Comment:

I took lisinopril for about 9 months. Within the last three months i had developed a dry itchy throat that made me cough so much I could not speak whole sentences and could not sleep at night because of the cough. I am off the lisionpril for about one week but still have the problem. How long before I see a change in my throat and cough

55 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

The mechanism thought to cause the cough with lisinopril is short-lived, meaning the cough should go away within a week of stopping the medication. Other conditions can cause dry coughs as well though, so please make an appointment with your physician to discuss other possible causes of the cough.

Question/Comment:

I took lisinopril for almost a year. The cough associated with the med became unbearable. Talked to my Doctor about it and he switched me to Benicar...No problems associated with the Binicar.

Question/Comment:

I was on lisinopril for 1and 1/2 months. I developed a hacking cough that causes me to gag. My doctor took me off lisinopril a week ago and I am still coughing. How long will the cough remain?! I prop myself on pillows all night and keep cough drops in my mouth to relieve the itchy, scratchy throat.

62 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Under normal conditions, lisinopril should be eliminated from your body in about 3 or 4 days. You should discuss your concerns with your doctor and followup if the cough and throat symptoms continue to bother you.

Question/Comment:

I was taking Lisinopril for about 1 1/2 years and suddenly my kidney function dropped to 36%.
I have no history of kidney problems, and understand that Lisinopril has been associated with kidney problems. My doctor took me off this drug immediately. Would just advise any patients that are taking Lisinopril to have their kidneys checked with each blood test.

Answer/Reply:

This doesn't make sense to me. I have chronic kidney disease and my doctor, who has followed me for years, actually SWITCHED me to Lisinopril to HELP my kidney function. She has actually personally participated in some of the research and studies on this subject. I did briefly discuss it with her after reading some of the comments here and it seems that Lisinopril only has the adverse kidney reaction if you are already in poor health - that being feeling severely ill and particularly dehydrated, throwing up, etc. for long periods of time. Otherwise it helps, apparently. She says it seems to have helped with me.

Anyone else happen to know anything about this beneficial side of the medication?

Question/Comment:

I have notices that I get shortest of breathe but I didn't think it was from Lisinopril because I been take it for about 3 years. Thank you for the information.

Question/Comment:

I am 62 year old male and have been taking Lisinopril for 24+ months. Unfortunately, I have experienced many of the listed side effects at one time or another. Recently my dosage was increased from 20MG to 80MG as my BP had gone high and this has truly exacerbated all of the side effects including the cough and a rash which I never experienced prior to the increase. In addition I do have extreme fatigue, sensitivity to sunlight and a rather unique effect that appears to be uncommon: hot ears. As the ambient temperature approaches 80F my ear begin to feel hot and I have to use a summer water spray bottle to cool them off. The hot ears mandates little outdoor time and constant A/C which has proven to be rather expensive. I also take HCTZ diuretic which may further complicate the situation. The good thing is my BP is now controlled.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Lisinopril for two weeks and have very bad muscle cramps in my legs. is there a connection?

49 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Less than 1% of iGuard members report muscle pain when taking lisinopril. According to the product labeling, 0.5% of patients experience muscle cramps. Muscle pain is a side effect of some other commonly used medications, including those used to lower cholesterol. If your symptoms are still bothering you, make an appointment to discuss this symptom with your physician.

Question/Comment:

i have been taking lisinipril for about 3 years and just latley ive noticed a cough but i also smoke so i think it is from that, i also take atenenol.

52 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Lisinopril does cause a cough in some cases. I had to stop taking it because my doctor thought I was having a reaction to it with cough and shortness of breath. It would be wise to talk to your doctor and be sure. I would think you would have reacted earlier, but anything is possible.

Answer/Reply:

I was takig Lisonopril for 2-3 years then I developed a cough, persistant cough. After about a month I went to the Doctor and I was told it was allergies. BAHHH ! I took antihistamines and no luck there. The cough went away for 2-3 weeks then came back again. Mind you I rarely get sick and don't smoke. I had started to think something at work was triggering my cough. I would cough at work and at night. I also have asthma that surfaced again. Had it when I was a child. I had to use my inhaler more often and got a bit of relief when I used it at work and at night. Meanwhile, I went back to the doctor and she suggested I had my lungs checked by a specialist. Respiratory therapist. I had had this cough for 2-3 months now ! I was really tired of constantly coughing... not good. Went back to the doctor again for coughing and THAT"S when she figured out it was the medication!! She changed my medication to DIOVAN. Meanwhile I am going to the specialist for lung issues. He says I might need to be on managed medication for COPD now for the rest of my life or I will be carrying an oxygen tank around in the next 10 years ! He says the outer layer of my lungs are at 50% capacity. My inner large bronchial tubes are good. So... did Lisonopril cause more damage to my lungs that were already compomised as a child ? I think the side effect coughing gets passed over more than we know!! I think since I dont smoke it took awhile for my doctor to figure out it was the Lisonopril causing the cough. It took another good 2-3 weeks before my cough went away after getting off that medication.
I am 50 yrs old too. Give yourself a great gift.... stop smoking....you may already have begining stages of emphysema. Any severe type of C.O.P.D. is a horrible suffering slow death. You want to enjoy the rest of your life. Good Luck !

Question/Comment:

49 years old, male. Have been taking Lisinopril for 2 years, 20mg. For the first 2wks had similar symptoms, mild cough, HA. Now absolutely not side effects after the first 2 weeks. And my BP is well controlled. Tried Amlodipine Besylate it made me tired/fatigue had to stop taking it. Tried HCTZ, diuretic thought I was going to die had to stop it. So if you can get first the first two weeks of side effects from Lisonpril it is a very simple cheap drug to use.
