Global Patient Feedback for Zyrtec (Cetirizine) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
Zyrtec works well for me with no side effects. Because I take other medications I wanted to discontinue some. I tried going off Zyrtec thinking I was doing fine and no longer needed it. I immediately had a relapse of symptoms. I realized how well it really had been working and continued taking it.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking Zyrtec for about 5 months now and it is working wonders for me. So far I have had no side effects. I also get Allergy shots as well. My doctor wanted me to take the Zyrtec in addition to the shots and my allergies have calmed down quite a bit.

Question/Comment:
I had previously used a prescribed Atrovent inhaler. It worked very well except for the localized dryness in the inside of my nose. Sometimes to the point of being sore and crusty, but it didn't seem to affect the rest of my body as far as tiredness or being jittery. When my daughter said how well the Zyrtec worked for her, I switched to the generic brand and have been pleased ever since. Seems Claritin in more expensive and I did not try that. I get my supply of Zyrtec at Sam's Club and it's comparable with the previously mentioned price at Costco which is a bargain. I do notice it slightly increases drowsiness taken along with some of my other medicine so it's best for me to take at night. I highly recommend it. Check on contraindications and drug interactions before trying any meds and educate yourself first. The only exception are life saving medication. Some doctors have a "let's try this" attitude and if you are on meds from another doctor they tend to not pay as much attention to those in their choice.

Question/Comment:
I have taken Zyrtec for 3 years or so. Now that it is OTC and cheap, I have not used it. I have problems with itching and hives and scratch until my skin bleeds and sometimes swells. I have not noticed much of an increase in these symptoms without the Zyrtec and just apply topical treatments like Caladryl. My Caladryl has an exp date of 2005 but still works to stop itching. Does anyone have comments on this? I now know that Lipitor and some of my other meds may contribute to the itching and am stopping Lipitor too.

Answer/Reply:
For several years I had hives and itching, but was able to control it mostly; however in 2003 I had severe hives and had to be hospitalized. I was treated with intraveinous prednisone, which barely helped. Then was placed on zyrtec 2 times a day, ranitidine 3 times a day and removed wheat from my diet which includes gluten and no more hives. When I reduce the ranitidine to 2 X a day I was still ok. However; reducing the zyrtec caused a minor instance with hives; the wheat was a biggy, my body doesn't tolerate it at all. So, the zyrtec (regular strength) will most likely keep the hive under control. Caladryl is very messy and everyone can see it.

Question/Comment:
I have been using Zyrtec for quite sometime now (approximately 10 years).
I will soon try to get pregnant and thought of stopping them for a while...Are there any withdrawal symptoms if I try to stop? Anxiety or something else?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Absolutely and you will not find help from the Johnson & Johnson Co who make the OTC Zyrtec all they do is offer you a refund...if that isn't admitting that hey have a problem and dodging it I don't know what is. You ask to speak to someone of authority and they put you on hold and do NOT contact you again. Please stay away from this product!

I know this post is from 09/2008 but perhaps you may still see this or it will help someone else who is trying to go off of Zyrtec. I have been diagnosed with depression and I have been taking Zyrtec for at least 4-5 years every single day. I'm sure that my taking Zyrtec has something to do with my depression, even though it doesn't list that as a side effect. I am still taking Cymbalta for my depression and for my fibromyalgia pain. However, I took myself off of the Zyrtec about 3-4 weeks ago, and I believe that the worst possible withdrawal symptom will be the horrible itching that you will get if you suddenly go off of it and not wean yourself off. My itching has FINALLY stopped. And, get this, I don't feel as depressed as I did either! I'm not a doctor but I'm the patient and I BELIEVE with no doubt that Zyrtec can cause or worsen depression in some people such as myself. I hope my testimonial here will help someone! Good Luck!

Question/Comment:
I have used Zyrtec for several years. It works well. When I first started on it, I had some drosiness so I just took it at bedtime which is when I had problems anyway. I have overcome the drosiness effects at this point and have no negative effects from this medication. It works all day and it works very well to this day for me. I recommend it to anyone with allergies who have not tried it. I have several converts already.

Question/Comment:
I am 71 years old and have been using Zyrtec for some 15 years. I have asthma. At present I only use a prescribed nasal spray and a inhaler. I have used other allergy medications but none have been as effective as Zyrtec for my allergy symptoms. I was only sorry that Zyrtec went over the counter, because I could get a three months prescribed supply much cheaper than over the counter supply. I would recommend this product.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Why? I have asthma and my doctor has me taking Zyrtec, Nasacort and Singular. Some times my chest feels heavy and I'm not sure if Zrytec adds to that feeling. I went off Zyrtec for 2 days and didn't feel that heaviness in my chest so I don't know if the feeling came from not taking the Zyrtec or if my allergies caught up with me during the days I didn't take the Zyrtec. It is very warm and humid here but I was not outside very long.......just trying to figure out if Zyrtec has any side effects like heaviness in the chest.

Question/Comment:
If you have allergies and have tried other antihistamines without much relief, Zyrtec will most likely change your life. Zyrtec acts quickly (within 15 minutes), is long lasting (24 hours), and provides COMPLETE relief from allergy symptoms. It's a lifesaver. I tell everyone I know with allergies about how great Zyrtec is, I just can't say enough about it. And now that Zyrtec's OTC and generic, it's even more convenient and cost effective to take. Hurray for Zyrtec!
