Question/Comment:
I too take methadone and percocet along with a bunch of other drugs. I have chronic pancretitis. I had a whipple surgery where they remove part of the pancreas. After the surgery i was left with chronic pain.I've been on methadone and percocet now for almost 7 years. I am truly addicted to them and have tried to get off of them alone. The withdrawals are so bad that i end up going back to them. I heard of places that do detox while you are asleep but haven't been able to find one. I saw it on a commercial once and can't remember what the name of the place was. I have asked my doctors about it and they act like they've never heard of it. If anyone knows what i am talking about please let me know. I live in Lake Charles, La. Thanks

I live in River Ridge. It's right outside New Orleans. There is a hospital here that does that, puts you to sleep while you withdraw. It's called River Oaks Psychiatric Hospital in Harahan LA. Give them a call. They can help you. Lots of luck to you.

Have you thought of trying Suboxone to detox? You may have to do some research to find a doc in your area but if you go to www.suboxone.com you will find many. Using your insurance, if you have any will be the more affordable route other wise it could cost quite a bit but not as much as one of those Detox while you sleep clinics. I have heard mixed reviews about them and the care is not much more than doing it at home and taking some Benzos for sleep and anxiety. There is a site that I frequent and have many friends on called topix, there is a forum on Oxycontin, Oxycodone, etc and there are many people who post there in your situation. Lots of good people and good advice too. Check it out if you have time. If the Sub route turns out to be too pricey you can always try going to a methadone clinic and seeing if that is a viable alternative. Good luck and keep me posted. j4ceful@aol.com

If you choose to use suboxin or subutex (buprenorphine) please use caution. Make sure the prescribing physician is certified in addiction therapy. Do not take with benzos or opiates. Side effects can be respiratory failure.

Hi, I saw that ad,I think it s expensive and not covered by insurance.I m on methodone for pain, and was getting Percocet from my regular doctor. The pain doctor said to discontinue the percocet, because the methodone was enough.Methodone is very hard to get off of.I was on a methodone program at one time. That is what I would do,try to get on a methodone program and detox gradually.Or tell the doctor you want to detox. The only problem is no one wants you to stop, because they lose money.Just take it slow, you can detox yourself.I d try the meth. program.I don t want to tell you what to do because everyone is different.I had a friend years ago who went into a place to quit heroin cold turkey. He said they were going to lock him up till he was clean,he wound up hanging himself.I know your problem,I m in the same boat.Just take it easy and go very gradually. If you are in alot of pain you might as well stay on the meth. Most pain meds. are addictive.People are on meth. programs for years. Good Luck, Harry.

Question/Comment:
I take Duragesic 50mg 1 every 2-3 days & Percocet 2 times per day for the past 5.5yrs. I can go days without taking the Percocet but at the end of the 3rd day going to the middle of the 4th day without changing my patch, the pain increases by the hour. I have a high tolerance for pain, so I can do this without the high and addiction that I have heard so much about. Maybe this is because I told myself & believed that I would not get addicted to get high.
I also used to be a smoker 6yrs prior to these medications. I decided that I would stop smoking after my 7yr old child said to me one day at the playground, "Daddy, I wish you would stop smoking because I don't want you to die." The next day I went to Wal-Mart, purchased the 1st 30 days of the 3 step 90 days of Nicorette gum. I was done with the program in 30 days and never purchased or used the next 2 steps. That was in 1997 and I have not had a cigarette since other than second-handed smoke, which is hard to avoid.
So, my belief is that you must really put your mind to it, believe in yourself, and pray that you will not get high or addicted. If you do these things sincerely, you have won 1/2 of the battle.

B very careful w/the duraglesic patches. i was on the patches for years (up 2 150 a day + other meds) & couldn't stand when they fell off early & had 2 deal w/the withdrawals. Also b careful if u have other prob like IBS etc. I recently found out that every few yrs getting colonoscopies that they were using the same meds in the patches & I wasn't going out 4 the proceedure(they were giving me less that what I was on daily, & I wonder if I could've od'd being given the extra boost of it!) That pain Dr. passed away so when I got a new Dr. I told him I wanted something I could control (choices oxys or methadone) The withdrawals were so bad (even w/taking oxy 2 control the pain) that if I hadn't had someone w/me I probably wouldn't b here 2day! Now all the recalls on it!! My friend that helped me through it had 2 b hospitalized from the patch & given antivan(?) He was od ing from it if I hadn't gotten an ambulance right away he would have died! I never knew how dangerous these patches were. They say it's worse than being addicted 2 Heroin.
Then I became addicted 2 the oxys. 1 month A billing error at the pharmacy & again horrible withdrawals (not like the patches though). So I decided to get off all the addiction meds it's been since nov of 08. I explained 2 my pain Dr. & he said that's what I do I prescribe these meds ( I asked if there was anything I could take occaisionally when it became 2 much). I'm currently having 2 seek out a new pain Dr. but everyday is such a struggle pain or addiction?
I've gone thru withdrawals from the patch, oxys etc. etc. But can't make it thru withdrawals from cigarettes!LOL I've tried the gum, patch etc. Nada. (can't afford the new stuff 2 try). Hows that for the power & weaknesses of the state of mind!

Question/Comment:
I was just looking at the list of the medications you all are talking about and I take all of them except the Percocet, which I used to take, but my doctor put me on MS Contyin instead I take it in between my Dilandud 8 mgs. Plus I take Cymbalta a Xanax which now concern me, because it was talking about the adverse affects of mixing the medications together and the side effects that come along with these medications. You all were talking about being off of the meds that are mentioned, I recently ran out of my Xanax and MS Contyin, and my Dilandud at the same time, oh the withdrawals, to me feels like being off of Heroin, which I've never taken but I don't ever want to go through that again. My husband cried over me because I couldn't control myself, I shook, really bad, and I knew that I was doing it, but I couldn't control it, and I was out of my head talking crazy tallk my husband said, it was the worse thing that I've ever been through in my life, sometimes I think I would rather feel the pain that to have to go through what I did. But if I don't take my pain and nerve medication I hurt so badly. I have osteoarthritis, and arthritis of the eyes and now I believe that I'm getting Fybromylagia, which is so very painful. But I've been on these medications for about 7 or 8 years maybe more, because before these medications I was on Vicodin, and Oxycontin and Methodone, I took 8-10 Methodone a day for the pain and the Oxycontin I took 3- 80 mgs a day, and needless to say when I stopped seeing the Doctor that perscribed the Methodone, I had withdrawals so badly that instead of going somewhere to get help, my husband went to the drugstore and got me what called "Detox", it comes with a powder you drink, and a pill which you take along with it. What it does is make you go to the bathroom and it gets all of the toxins out of your body, but meanwhile you still feel the pain because you don't have it anymore. I'm like one of the women that said I hate taking medications I wish I didn't have to, but without the meds , the pain is just unbearable, and when you have ahome to run and children and a husband to take care of you can't be in pain and try to do your work at the same time, it just to me can't be done. But if you don't have to get on any kind of pain medication, don't, because eventually, even though your in pain, you do become addicted, you take it more often, at least I do, so that the pain doesn't come back, because I just can't handle pain. 48 year old Female

My dear 47 year old (sorry I don't know your name)
There are natural ways to break addictions to pain meds. I don't know your money situation or where you live but there are natural clinics and homiopathic doctors to help.
You are not without a solution PLEASE KNOW THIS.
You need to get yourself off of some of these med before your organs start failing.
Please I understand, I am a cancer survivor who was started on all kinds of drugs by my cancer doctor.
He did not consider at the time what was gonna happen later when I become addicted
I am still in a lot of pain
I believe in the healing of the angels and God and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt you can heal with God's help
God helped me break a terrible addiction to Demerol(which I was told I could not do alone) but here I am off of it through God's help and the help of olive leaf extract which cleanses your blood of toxins.
I am still on percocet's 10/325 and ativan which I will in due time be off of too.
Blessings.

You should check with a good top of the line Chiropractor before any back surgery. Most back surgeries are avoidable but of course an orthopedic surgeon is not going to admit that.

Sounds like you have some muscle and nerve damage from your surgeries. Hopefully, you are using a cane. I live with this as well and have had several back surgeries. The falling also caused carpal tunnel syndrome from landing on my hands and knees. Also had knee surgery from falling, ripped the meniscus, acl and mcl. God bless you, I know what you are going through.

Question/Comment:
I am a 42 year old who is being seen by a comprehensive pain managment doctor. I have severe bulging and degenertive discs with multiple bone spurs throughout my entire cervial spine. He is using a Swedish procedure that burns the nerve endings instead of invasive surgery, The last procedure I had was the burning of the C-2 and C-3. I had a rare reaction that creates the nerves to go crazy into a neuralga like none felt before. Needless to say I am on Neutontin (trying to get used to the dosage is slow) 4 x daily, Percocet 7 4x daily and amitripyline once at night. Juggling these meds to find a time that I won't be groggy all day is hard, but I must say it works! I am concerned of the addiction to the percocets since I have been on them for a little over a year. I was on vicoden which does nothing for pain but a lot of stomach upset.

I also am a 42 yr old female and my pain management dr. put me on Roxicodone 30mg 4X's daily. I have advanced degenerative disc disease and have already lost 3 discs in my L and S regions completely and am loosing more everyday. I also, needless to say, am on Neurontin 800mg. 4 x's daily as well as Soma 350mg 4 x's daily. My dr. put me on MS-Contin 60mg 4 x's daily which (I found out the hard way) is Morphine and extremely addictive. I ended up in the hospital (twice) when I ran out of my Contin and had been throwing up, had diarrhea, extreme stomach cramps and was scared to death it was some other disease. After my 2nd hospital visit and numerous test, they informed me that I was addicted to Morphine (after shooting me up with it every 4 hrs.for about a week intravenously) and politely sent me home without any Morphine for me to take when the pains came back. Luckily I got a hold of my pain mgmt. dr. who helped me and gave me a reduced mg of Morphine (from 60 to 30 mg.) and I am learning that I can limit myself to 1 or 2 a day. I know the feeling of grogginess very well and have discovered that taking ibuprofen (800 mg.) instead of my Roxi and Contin at least for 1 dose helps even out the time of grogginess to very little of it at all. It may help but I would recommend talking to your dr before trying this as it has an effect on your liver if you use too much ibuprofen and can get a little pricy if you buy Advil all the time. Your dr. can script you the dosage and it may help you out with the daytime "groggies" that way you can dose yourself with the "groggies" before bedtime and make it better through the day. Also ask your dr if Roxi may be better than Percocet. I find it works the same if not better and I dont really need to take it as much and if you have no insurance (like me) then Roxi is DEFINITELY cheaper than Percocet.
I hope this helps a little.
May God bless you with peace in your life and mind.

Question/Comment:
I have taken Percocet for over 13 years and it still works as good today as it did the first day I got it. #1. Take a break from it periodically such as reducing the dose to 2x instead of 4-6x's per day. (It will help prevent a build up of immunity to its effectiveness). #2. Take it on an empty stomach and it will help with its effectiveness. As for the constipation.....drink LOTS of water each day and take 2 TBSP. of fresh organic ground flax seed 2 times per day and your problems will be over with. I mix my flax seed with apple juice but you can put it in "any" beverage of your choice. I buy mine at the grocery store and grind it myself in a coffee grinder.(Much more cost effective to grind your own) Keep it refrigerated to help keep it fresh and don't grind up the entire bag at one time. Just enough for 1-3 days. I also take anti-inflammatory enzymes (2) as soon as my feet hit the floor in the morning. I buy "REPAIR" you can find it online or at just about any health food store. It's the best thing that even happened to me and has allowed me to eliminate all other pain relievers and even my nerve pain meds completely for the last 3 years. These are enzymes.......you do not have to be concerned with overdosing or mixing them with other meds/supplements. These enzymes are what our body is suppose to have for fighting pain anyway. But, our food quality is so poor anymore that most beneficial vitamins and enzynes are depleted. I have noticed that the longer I take the enzymes.....the less I have to take to get the same effect.

I have been taking percocet 5 for 1 1/2 years. First for a broken ankle which turn out to be two broken ankles. The second did not want to heal, so my doctor extracted the bone that would not heal. After the surgery I had 3 infections from the stitches. Now I take it for numbness and severe pain in hands, arms, elbow, and shoulder. I took a nerve test, which I do not have the results back yet. But the whole time I have been on percocet, it has not helped that much. All the doctors are to afraid of increasing to 10, or trying another drug. I have asked for lortab and soma, they look at me like I am crazy. If a drug is not helping, because I have a high tolerance, why not try something else

I was recently put on Percocet at 7.5mg I had to quit my part time job prior to that because the pain in my lower back is so extreme as well as the nerve pain that I have running down both legs and my arm. I have been diagnosed with tumors inside of my vertebra, which cause the bones to be swollen to the point of pushing on my spinal cord and all kinds of odd nerves. This does provide some relief, not total though. The nerve issues are horrible is there a medication that actually works on nerve pain?

I have used both percocet and lyrica for the treatment of nerve pain due to degenerative disc disease and I'm currently still using the percocet. In my case, lyrica did absolutely nothing for the pain and the side effects were unbearable. My insomnia became much worse, I had vivid nightmares when I did sleep and within two weeks became depressed and anxious during the day, often feeling out of sorts, dizzy and extremely irritable. I tried using the Lyrica for well over two months hoping that eventually the side effects would lessen and it would start helping with the pain with no luck. The side effects only got worse and it had no effect on pain.

What is the strongest does of percocet and what does the numbers mean beside the 7.5 mg or 10 mg -325 or 625 what does those mean. What is just as strong as percocet after someone has been taking it for 3 years.

Answer/Reply:
THE AMOUNT OF ACTUAL OXYCODONE IN THE PERCOCET IS THE 5, 7.5 OR 10 MG- AND HIGHER. THE 325 OR 625, ETC IS THE AMOUNT OF ACETOMINOPHEN (TYLENOL) ALSO INCLUDED TO REDUCE YOUR PAIN, REMEMBER THAT NARCOTICS WORK ON PAIN RECEPTORS IN THE BRAIN, AND THAT IF YOU WAIT UNTIL YOUR PAIN IS UNBAREABLE- THEY DO NOT DO A GOOD JOB OF RELIEVING YOUR PAIN. THE TYLENOL IN THE MED HELPS MAKE UP FOR THIS. AND THERE ARE LEVELS OF MANY OTHER NARCOTICS THAT PEOPLE CAN TRY - WITH THEIR MD'S SUPERVISION. SOME ARE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN OTHERS AND SOME MAY NOT BE RIGHT FOR YOU. TALK TO YOUR MD OR PAIN MANANGEMENT DR.

I take Percocet 10/325 and find it does wonders in conjunction with Opana, which is an extended release type pain killer. I just started on these meds and already my life has changed drastically. I have permenant nerve damage to the thorasic nerve and winging of the scapula. Until now my pain was about an 8 on the scale everyday, nothing seemed to help. I was taking Percocet 7.5 for about 2 years and developed a tolerance to it and was suffering everyday, until I just found a dr who was not afraid to prescribe an aggressive dose of these painmeds and put me out of my misery. Answer/Reply:
I was reading your comment and was curious, is the Thoracic Nerve damage you refer to Thoracic Outlet Syndrome or TOS? I am 35 and have been suffering with pain in my right arm for over a year now. They originally diagnosed me with mild Cervical Radiculopathy. It was my Physical Therapist who actually diagnosed me with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and a Vascular Doctor who specializes in TOS who confirmed the diagnosis. I have spent the last 4 months on a slew of medications, one of them being Oxycodone 10 mg and told to take a regular strength tylenol (325 mg), as needed. The doctor is afraid of too much tylenol and the damage it can do to my liver and kidneys. I have also received 3 injections, 1 Brachial Plexus Block and 2 Stella Ganglion Block's. All of this has helped some but not enough for my comfort level. This condition has affected my daily living. I had to drop out of nursing school and have been unable to return to work as all my experience is in the medical field and requires the use of my hands (then again, what really doesn't involove the use of your hands). The nerve impingement is in my right arm which is my dominate hand. I am curious to know if this is the same condition you are suffering from and if you wouldn't mind sharing with me things that you have tried? Which have worked? Which have not? I wish you well as I know what it is like to live with chronic pain
