Answer/Reply:
You need to talk to your doctor about this and make sure he understands what is going on. If you don't tell him, he won't know. Make sure he has a complete list of the meds your taking and that he lists all of the side effects you have. If they are interfering with your quality of life, you need to make sure he understands this and you discuss alternate meds or treatments.

Answer/Reply:
I have witnessed doctors refusing to take their patients off statins even though the patient was being crippled by the statin and unable to function in life. The patients ultimately take charge and take themselves off the drug, and the healing begins. Quality of life comes back. But they had to ditch their physician to get their health back. This story is more common than you know.
Physical exercise is very important for good health. When a drug restricts your ability to get the exercise you need, its bad for cardiovascular health. Ultimately, the drug induces the heart condition it was intended to prevent.

I'm 73-male. I had a mild heart attack about 2 years with no major heart damage and have 1 stent. I take aspirin, plavix, atenolol, simvastatin, lisinopril and isosobid and have had no major side effects except my wife says my mind isn't as sharp (meds or age?) I'm very active, bowl, golf, sell roofs.Do these meds tend to make one sleepier than usual, because when I do relax I nod off, and boy do I have some vivid dreams.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
The acidity in grapefruit can render the med ineffective. It usually states it on the bottle or brochure.
Posted: 2009-02-18 19:17:50
Answer/Reply:
Grapefruit interferes with many drugs. I believe it has to do with receptors in the liver - grapefruit uses the same ones as many drugs, so it may make the drug stay in the system longer while it waits its turn for the receptors.
I haven't heard that zocor is one of the these drugs, but if so, that may be why.
(Please confirm this with your doctor - that's my very rough understanding, so I may not have it completely correct.)

What I have been told for myself, is cause Grapefruit causes your body to Isolate the Statin drugs and store them until the grapefruit has worn away inside your body, then it releases the Statin drugs all at once instead of a normal rate when not eating or drinking grapefruit.... This release could be harmfull to you, so Please do not take grapefruit whie on the Statin drugs.... Under your Doctors advice, only at that time and how he/she describes the method of consuming grapefruit should it be done...... This is the best I can tell you !!!!

I am a 58 year old female on Zocor. When I was about 48 I started taking statin type meds, and hormone pills for insomnia relief. The hormone pills worked for well over a year and then its effectiveness seemed to fade. I also developed allergies and had tests about 6 years ago, and constantly have nasal congestion along with insomnia. I see that 1% of folks have nasal congestion and insomnia. I dont like any prescription meds for sleep problems, I have tried herb formulas and benedryl and both are somewhat helpful. I went for a sleep study which was inconclusive as I didnt sleep! Joined Curves gym for one year and that didnt have a big effect...

I am a 69 year old male with similar problems as above. I have been on Simivastatin for over 6 years. For over 3 months now I have had intense burning in my stomach and have gone through Cat scans, endoscope and colonoscopy as well as various specimen tests. i have other symptoms of insomnia, alternation of recently, diarrhea and periods of constipation, bloating and gas, but the burning in my gut is the worse. After rounds of GERD medications, and diet changes the pain still is present. I have never had heart burn so GERD doesn't make sense to me. Two years ago I had a nightmare of an episode after knee replacement surgery with memory and confusion issues. That went away, but the Neurologist said it was early Dementia. In addition, I have started having intense back pain burning and shooting from the spine across my back. The Orthropedic Doctort says that is Spinal Stenosis. I could mention weakness and sleep problems; the list goes on, but the bottom line is the quality of life is not good presently. Imagine my shock at seeing so many of my symptoms related to the statin drug. No one ever mentioned the possibility. Will stopping the drug alleviate some of the pains and help me? I have had high cholesterol issues for over 20 years and have taken several types of statins in this period. My ChL is under control levels presently and I have had liver test throughout the years.

I have heard from numerous people that stopping a statin improves quality of life. For some the improvement begins within a couple days. For others it may take months to years. But most everyone reports feeling better after stopping the drug. The only variable is the time to recover.

I have heard of hair loss with statins although its not a common complaint. Cholesterol inhibition can have wide range side effects. Its tough to stay healthy when we fire the Director of Human Engineering and Bodily Maintainance. That's cholesterol role in human health if you were to give it a job title. I've been taking Zocor for almost 2 years now. I have not experienced any side effects that I could say could be related to the drug. However, my knees have been very sore and achy for the past month and now I'm wondering if it's a side effect of the drug or maybe I did injure them in some way. I do alot of cross legged sitting on floor with kids and kneeling...etc, etc.

To the 54-yr old woman with achy knees ... I am a healthy 55-yr old woman, and I took Vytorin for 2 years and developed sore and achy joints all over, especially my shoulders and knees, and stress incontinence. My knees hurt so badly that I needed to push myself up out of chairs with my arms because the knee pain was so bad. Fortunately, I had to discontinue the Vytorin for a 90 day period to take another type of medication (that was also hard on the liver) with the intention of resuming the Vytorin after the 90 days were over. Within a week or two after discontinuing the Vytorin, most of my achy joints were fine and the incontinence had disappeared. When the time came to resume the Vytorin, I began to take it again and within a few days, the joint pain and the incontinence began to return. I stopped taking the Vytorin again and it went away. I started it again and it came back ... I am not stupid ... I saw the direct cause-and-effect. I told my cardiologist I would not take it anymore. He prescribed me Crestor, which he said had less incidence of muscle problems. I tried it, but it did the same thing to my joints and the incontinence returned, so I stopped it as well. He now has me on Zetia, a non-statin drug, and I have had no problems with it. It is not as effective as a statin, but I no longer feel like an old woman long before my time. Hope this helps you!

Once I get up and move around for just a couple of minutes the pains disapear but come back when I go back to sleep. I had this with Crestor so I switched to Zocor. Now I'm having it again. My doctor told me to stop taking Zocor for a few weeks to see if the pains stop. We'll see.

I have been taking Nexium for about ten years as the ONLY Rx to almost complete resolve GERD issues. I also took Lipitor for over 5 years and a few months ago changed to Simvastatin. I have shoulder problems from bone spur and previous brucitis mostly corrected by surgery 3 years ago. I started having knee pain about 3 months ago and worsening. Is the coincidence of pain & change about the same time a factor?? I don't know but am considering ceasing use of the statin as my chlosterol is only marginally bad. I am 70 with arthritis in fingers - inherited trait. Something to consider according to an article in Reader's Digest over 25 years ago that archeological doctors (study mummies, etc.) concluded human body is designed for 40 years and after that things just start to go. Yes, 40 years old seems to be a turning point for alot of people, but it doesn't have to be. I know a guy 84 years old who just recently stopped flying his Cessna, and is in better health than most 40 year olds. He is active active active. As far as the cholesterol drug is concerned, the clinical trials did not show any mortality benefits for people above 65 years of age. The Honolulu heart study showed us that people in the 70-90 age group lived longer healthier lives with higher cholesterol levels than those with low cholesterol. You are at the age where you need LDL cholesterol to repair existing cells, maintain Vitamin D levels, keep your nerves healthy, maintain memory, plus all the good things LDL does that Marketeers NEVER talk about.

I would like to know if any of you fellows have a problem (or similar situation) which a male friend of mine in Florida reports. He is taking Simvastatin/40 mg. daily. This gentleman (70+) tells me that in the morning when he awakens he has (don't know how to say this exactly!!!) erections -which he told me he was not having prior to taking this drug. My friend appears to be in fairly good health and the above noted situation would not usually cause a major problem but his wife died a few years ago so he is alone. Very alone. He asked me to find out if other gentlemen taking Simvastatin have had similar results. He said this drug appears to act like Viagra...at least in his case. Any comments appreciated.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking simvastatin, even though my cholestrol was only 70. My doctor thought it would be a good combination with Januvia because my fasting sugars were 110-130. Since I have been taking these drugs I have developed severe abdominal pain, extreme fullness in the gut, extreme gas alternating with constipation and diarrhea. I have been to the er 5x this week for this pain only to be given more drug to kill the pain since they could not find a reason after running several tests, catscans and colonoscopy. The last dr I saw said Januvia causes abdominal pain and I should consult with my doctor to stop the meds. However, after reading the posts here I wonder if my problems are related to simvastatin as well. I have the weakness in my legs, abdominal pain, irritability, confusion sometimes and general feeling of unwellness. I just stopped both meds and I am starting to feel better. The pain is lessening. Has anyone else experienced this things? Also the drs gave me Bentyl for the abdominal pain and I just found out it can amke my acid reflux worse. DO these drs know what their doing? Answer/Reply:
I am hoping that you made a typo when you said your cholesterol was only 70. Assuming "70" is correct and not a typo, then I see no reasonable expaination for the Simvastatin. Cholesterol levels this low are dangerous. If cholesterol levels fall too low, life cannot be sustained. The weakness in the legs, irritability and confusion you describe are symptoms that many statin users can relate too. Maintaining adequate levels of cholesterol is important to cell integrity, cognitive function, and emotional balance. I can clearly understand why you have been to ER five times in a week. Your cholesterol is dangerously low.

The answer varies from one individual to another. Some people tend to recover quickly, while others take 6 months to a year. A small percentage of people have permanant damage. Taking 300 mg daily of CoQ10 may help you to improve. But taking CoQ10 is not a cure all. You are not alone. What has happened to you is very common, and there are internet support groups for peple recovering from statin poisoning. A little research on the net will take you to others in your same situation.

Plavix is a drug to keep platlets from sticking together. Beyond that, I am noy qualified to comment on the Plavix. But the zocor falls within my statin studies over the last seven years and I can honestly say that, to date, no studies have shown any benefits for females taking statins despite their ability to lower Total and LDL cholesterol. Side effects from zocor can be debilitating for some people, and the elderly seem to be most at risk for this.

Answer/Reply:
The weak legs and numbness you are experiencing is called myopathy / neuropathy. It is the most common complaint among statin users. It can take time to heal from statin poisoning. Taking 300 mg CoQ10 per day may help since statins deplete this vital nutrient from muscles. As far as stroke is concerned, there is no proof that taking this drug will prevent a stroke. However, if you continue to take it as your doctor recommends, your health will most likely continue to deteriorate. This is just my Opinion, but any physician who continues to prescribe a medication, knowing its doing harm, has commited a crime and should be prosecuted accordingly.

I started on Simvastatin last January. 80 mg. 3 x a week. I developed severe pain in my legs, so bad that I could not walk without taking a pain bill. I had tests done etc. and everything came out normal. In September it dawned on me that it might be the Simvastatin. I cut my dose to 80 mg. 2 x a week and I no longer have the severe pain. I get my blood work done next week so I will see if the reduced dose is effective.

Yes, memory problems are now a common complaint among statin patients. Cholesterol does play an important role in cognitive function. About 50% of the dry weight of the human cerebral cortex is comprised of cholesterol. There are 662 reports in FDA's medwatch on memory problems with these drugs. Also you will find a significant number of complaints of memory laps on the web. A book has been written by a physician ( Dr. Graveline ) who suffrered TGA's from a statin. I won't plug the book here. Personally I never read it. But you can google it.

You stated that your doctor said "you have to take it". Absolutely not. You don't have to take it If it is making you sick. Take charge your own health. Besides, you are a female, and statin drugs have shown no reduction in mortality in females in trials. In fact the only group to benefit from statin drugs are middle aged males with cardiovascular disease, or several high risk factors. And then 100 men had to take a statin for over 3 years to prevent one cardiac event. Those are not very promising odds.

Hi, I am a 55 year old female, I have been on Simvastin for years, but now with the letter I recieved today from IGUARD SAFETY ALERTS, I was shocked when I read this, especially since I not only have heart disease, I only have 1 kidney working, and it was tested May 19, 2008 and my kidney function is down to 14% , I have been having pain in muscles and I also have been dealing with pain in my chest area, my doctor had ordered a ekg and a cat scan because some symptons I have been having she thought it was TIA;s (mini strokes) So after she reviewed the test, she put me on a medication which is to help prevent a stroke from happening AGGRENOX, so when I got home, new meds in tow, I sat down and pulled the new medicene papers out the warnings & so on they give you.
Well right on page 1 is a list of things if you have do not take, it says do not take if you have kidney disease, right there in black and white, so I did not take it the first night and I placed a call to my doctor at the VA Hospital and when she returned my call, she says yes she knows your not to take if you have kidney disease, or kidney failure, but she then tells me that because of the symptons of the TIA's I had been having, she said that this AGGRENOX would possibly keep me from having a bad stroke.
So now I get the letter telling me that something else can cause kidney failure, can someone please tell me what is safe to take when you have ;1 Kidney disease/Kidney Failure 2 Heart Disease - 3 Thyroid Disease (hyper thyroidism)
I have lost the function of 1 kidney, because a Doctor that I was seeing when I was able to work( picture this: I weighed 110 pounds, and when I was seen by this doctor, my blood pressure was way out of wack, but he did not try to figure out why I had high blood pressure, all he did was kept giving me pills for high BP until he got it low enough to be safe, But because he did not try to find out why I had high BP when I begin having other problems, I lost my job, cause BP was way to high the company I worked for could not let me operate a vehicle taking clients to do the contract work they did. So after about 2 years, I am seeing the Public Health Department doctor by then, and when they done lab work I had a high # of createine level, which concerned this doctor, after several test, he sent me to have a MRI done, and when the results come back, my right kidney had shrunk so small compared to my left kidney, so he sent me to a kidney doctor which after he reviewed, he asked me why the doctors I had been seeing had not caught this, he said if they had of searched to find out why I was having BP problems they would have found out that there was a kidney problem and then they could have saved my right kidney, it had blockages so no blood flow was going thru , which is what the kidneys require to flush the kidney out.
So now , the question is WHAT PILLS should I be taking, most of the ones I am on now all 11 of them most have some type of side effect that makes me not want to take the pills, but I want to live, so I keep taking them.................. anyone have any ideal which meds would be best for me?

Question/Comment:
I started taking Simvastatin last fall. Since I started, I have had three episodes involving severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, and severe fatigue. I thought I had the stomach flu. I was talking with a friend today and found out she had similar experiences. Have any of you?

It is possible that statins such as simvastatin interact with carboxyl acid to break down skeletal muscle tissue over time and to cause kidney and liver damage as well. Grapefruit is a food high in carboxyl acid. There are now warning labels on some statin products suggesting that grapefruit not be consumed while on the statin product. I do not know whether these claims are well established by research or the dosage levels of statins that will produce these destructive effects.

I have just started taking Simvastatin in June of this year. I have already experienced tiredness as well as muscle aches and I have a rash that itches. I spoke to my doctor about this and he told me it can't be from the drug Simvastatin. He said more or less it has it's good points and bad. I told him I quit taking it for 5 days and I felt great. I went back to taking it but have decided that for me I'm not going to feel this way, not only that, but I'm itching all the time too. Has any one else experienced the rash and itching and what did you use to take care of it?

Yes! I'm 57, female. Last night I was up 4 times with severe diarrhea. The 5th time I did not wake up in time and had to shower and change my bedding in the middle of the night. Then, I was afraid to go back to sleep. Even 2 immodium during the night did not help.
This is not the first time either! I normally never have this problem, only since starting Simvastatin. I will not live like this. I'm going to stop taking them to see if it stops. I'd been taking it at bedtime as the bottle suggested. And yes, this morning I felt flu-ish but with no fever and now (tonight) I'm fine.

Question/Comment:
Started Simvastatin last week and after six days I had to stop taking it. Extreme fatique, loss of appetite, abdominal problems(full feeling not cramps), mental slowdown, speech problems, ice cold sensation in toes, vision problems, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, chest pain, headache, diarrhea, altered sense of smell, depression. I may have missed one or two.
