Question/Comment:

My doctor doubled my daily simvastatin (to 1200mg) because of my very high TriGlyceride levels. I have been on simvastatin for several years. Each time I confront my doctor with my muscle pain he tells me that if I were having problems with simvastatin it would have shown up within a couple weeks of when I first took it. So I kept taking it and didn't question doubling the dose.

Question/Comment:

I started Simvastatin in Aug of 2008, went to my dr in Oct 2008 for muscle pain. He told me to take Magnesium, never once telling me that my muscle pain might have been from the Simvastatin. Meanwhile the pain was getting worse, by January I could barely roll over in bed, it would wake me up in the middle of the night if I tried to change my sleeping position. I couldn't lift myself up with my arm to get out of bed in the morning without wanting to die. I thought I was dying. I did a lot of research and found that all my problems could be related to the Simvastatin so I stopped taking it. I couldn't convince my primary doctor that it was from the Simvastatin and I have since found a different primary doctor. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself if you feel you are right. Within a month the pain had lessened to the point where I didn't want to die everytime I got up from the couch or bed. I ended up going to a rheumatologist and he did a bunch of tests and confirmed that my problems were from the Simvastatin. I'm now taking CoQ10 (apparently the Simvastatin depleted that from my liver), Please don't let it go too long if you think you may be having problems with any statin, the side effects can be dibilitating and long term.

Question/Comment:

No problems with simvastatin and niacin. I do seem to get leg cramps more frequently in the morning when I wake up. My HDL is up to where it is suppose to be. My LDL is low and always has been. Maybe it was too high for me. Now it is lower.

I have been taking opemprozole with simvastatin and have been getting a really odd rash on my whole body. It looks like little red cirlces and then they get bigger and itch. Anyone had the same thing?

Question/Comment:

What would be the mildest medication to take for either high blood pressure or high cholesterol. I started out on lovastatin and now am on simvastin at 20mg. And I have gone from triamterene to lisinopril. I would like to try the mildest medication and see how I do that is why I am asking.

72 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have had the same experience.I am 71 female and dont know if I should quit taking it or not. Will have blood work next week maybe that will be the deciding factor.

71 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

The mildest way to deal with high blood pressure is the following: Lower salt intake, increase potassium in the diet.( Avacodos are the highest food source of potassium.) Eliminate caffiene and increase physical exercise.

Concerning the cholesterol, unless you have unusually high elevations of cholesterol, its important to note that you are in the age bracket ( 70-90) that experiences better longevity and fewer health problems with higher cholesterol than those with lower cholesterol. Once we get well into our golden senior years, low cholesterol is associated with earlier death. This is well documented in research, but never discussed as it is counter productive to sales and marketing.

Question/Comment:

I have been using Simcor (niacin+simvastin) about 18 months now,(1000/20) and have achieved dramatic reduction in cholesterol and triglycerites levels, as well as an increase in good cholesterol. I do experiance occasional "flushing" however it passes....

I have found that if taken 30 min before bedtime and preceded by a couple Metamucil wafers and an Ecotrin safety coated aspirin the flushing is eliminated.... You do not want to take this drug with or near the time.... with ANYTHING hot or warm.... the only reason I experiance occasional flushing is because occasionally I don't follow instructions!..... hope someone finds this info helpful.

I've been on Simvastatin 80 mg. since my stent implant about 1.5 years ago with no ramping up in dosage by my doctor....my question to the group is (1) have most of you other users had the same type of perscription, i.e. high dosage and kept there....and (2)
have your dosages been reduced after a passage of time and or better test readings?

Answer/Reply:

I take simvastatin 40 mg every evening for my chlorestrol. I didn't know it was used for your purpose. I've been taking it for 3 years, no change in dosage, and no change in my chlorestrol which is normal.

80 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

As a general rule if your cholesterol numbers including total, HDL and LDL are satisfactory and your liver function tests are all normal there in no need to change anything.
You can talk to your doctor and if he agrees you can cut down the dose from 80 mg to 40 mg a day and continue careful monitoring of cholesterol numbers.
PS: I am a 72 year old physician who has been on Simvastatin 80 mg a day for a long time.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Simvastatin and Gemfilbrozil for a couple of years now. I have been taking Gemfibrozil for 2 years now. recently I have been having **serious Foot problems all of a sudden, with bad curculation and pain recently, and also breathing problems.**I don't know if anyone else has this problem. It also might be caused by all my medications mixed or because I also have a bulged disc which is damaging my back, side and leg. If someone else has these foot probblem without haveing other problems, please replay or email me at khaney46@yahoo.com. I am really conserned about all my health issues, and will be working to get them corrected soon. Thank You Ken

49 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I work in an out patient surgery area and what you are describing from what I have seen from the other numerous patients we see a day Is that you really need to see your back doctor as the bulging disc is getting worse and pressing on and angering the nerves in your back plus it may be cutting circulation way down into your foot. You really need to let your back doctor about all of this going on immediately tell him/her everything you have said here about the bad circulation, the really bad foot problems, about the more or extended pain you are having and especially about about your shortness of breath.

40 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I also have disc problems which i have reduced by daily stretching exercises and trying to keep my weight down. Once in awhile i experience legcramps/spasims which last for a few minutes.
I also have foot problems with bones compressing against each other and have had one surgery on my right foot in the big toe area.
Based on my experiences with chiropractors they are for the most part a waste of time and money------the only good experience was with one that practiced holistic methods.
Again stretching exercises and diet will really help your back and you really need to see a good back doctor asap.

67 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Gemfibrozil and simvastatin do have an interaction but not with the symptoms as you are describing them. No iGuard patients report tingling or breathing issues with simvastatin. The bulging disc can cause pain and foot problems as the disc presses on nerve roots. Please make an appointment with your physician as soon as possible to discuss these symptoms.

Answer/Reply:

Hi, yes, my Mom suddenly has foot problems after taking simvastatin for about 8 months... the problems began about 3 months after taking it... her feet hurt a lot and are swollen... we even took her to the Dr. for x-rays to find out if something was broken and fortunately, nothing was broken... a few weeks later, we went back to the Dr. and they requested an ultrasound because they thought something must be wrong... (she does not have diabetes)... so there is still something wrong with her ankles and feet, from about 4 inches above the ankles, but the Dr.'s have no clue... we decided on our own (without Dr.'s approval) 2 days ago to have her stop taking simvastatin (because of the high number of complaints of muscle stiffness and pain) to see if this will take care of the problem... I'll keep you posted... Darla (daughter of Martha, age 91)

My husband taken Zocor since 2005. Of late he began having pain swelling and redness in his foot and ankle so much pain with it he had to see his doctor they do not know the cause , however, his heart doctor changed his colesterol medication to Crestor. In the mean time a pain patch to the affected area is very relieving. His mother also has tried Zocor/Simivistatin and can not take it because it gives her too much muscle pain in her arms and legs. I told a nurse about it at work who also takes Zocor/Simivistatin and she had assumed her increase in painful muscles in her extremities was from another condition however now knowing what I told her about my husband and his mother too she is going to her doctor to switch her cholerterol medicine too. GOOD LUCK!

I was told by my doctor that you cannot take both these drugs...choose one or the other...also
to drink a lot of water while taking Gemfilbrozil....at least 8 glasses a day. Never had a problem
after following his advice.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Zocor for about 31/2 years. I never have had headaches before, and now I get migrains and often can't sleep. This is my first time reading the blog and I am blown away. I was perscribed this med for build up starting around my heart. I have cronic pain due to a compresion fracture of the L2 spine. I had no idea that this medicine could be making my pain worse. I am a 52 year old women. I eat cheerios every day, and have never had bad colesteral.

I am in agreement with your comment as well I have chronic pain due to a fracture in the L5 and S1 lumbar spine. I had no idea that this medication could be making my pain worse. I too eat cheerios every day and eat a very healthy diet never had bad cholesterol in my life. It seems that your primary care Physician is the worst enemy in your care. Basically (he or she) prescribes these medications without checking out the side effects to their patients. You are your own advocate in your health care. Physicians get a kick-back from the pharmaceutical companies. This is why they are giving samples - (you) the patient are the research assignment for failures hence the recent pharmacy failures and the lawsuits by attorneys to them via the media. Class actions. This is sad but true. It is only a money making machine. I would suggest a homeopathic way of treatment for HP/cholesterol and others issues that require these types of medications. Plain old whole grains are beneficial. I have quit taking the cholesterol medications .. no problems pains ceased. Go figure...active 50 yr old woman...

Question/Comment:

I've been taking Lisinopril Hydroclorothizide for blood pressure and Zocor for cholesterol for at least 5 years now, and immediately I had problems ejaculating. My doctors said that it couldn't be any one of the prescribe medications, because neither one produces such side effects. However, I've been around a long time and never had problems ejaculating -- As soon as I began taking these medications the problems began almost immediately !!!
I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar effects from either one of these medications ?

69 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Among iGuard members, less than 1% report loss of libido or sexual problems while taking lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide or Zocor. If your symptoms continue, please make an appointment to discuss them with your physician.

Question/Comment:

Is anybody else noticing any memory problems while taking this drug? It seems to be affecting my short-term memory. Or so my wife tells me...I don't remember.

48 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

Yes I have noticed the memory thing and so I think I am going to come off them and try the Red Yeast Rice if I can get it in the UK; I have also noticed trouble with getting out what I want to say sometimes, yet I know what I should be saying, simple stuff, weird.

45 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Herbal preparations like red yeast rice are not evaluated by the FDA for safety or efficacy. Be aware, red yeast rice contains many compounds that are thought to help in reducing cholesterol. One of these compounds is monacolin K, which is also known as lovastatin (Mevacor, a drug produced by Merck & Co., Inc). Lovastatin belongs to the same "statin" class of medication class as simvastatin and thus red yeast rice has the potential to cause the same side effects as "statins." Before starting or stopping any medication or herbal preparation, please make an appointment with your physician to discuss your options.

Answer/Reply:

wow me too, i was getting scared and thought I was developing alzheimers.

44 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have been studying side effects from statins for years and find memory complaints very high. Cholesterol is vital to the brain and nerves. Cholesterol plays a role in a process called "synapses" in the brain.

52 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I would suggest everyone to do their own investigation regarding statins. Of course, your doctor will tell you all the pros of the drug, but rarely will they tell you of the cons. Prescription drugs are BIG business, and the companies will do anything and everything to make money. I've know several people who took the statins (including myself), and more than 50% of us had severe side effects - muscle issues, memory issues, severe overall fatigue, dizzyness - the list goes on. As I have been researching the pros and cons of statins, there are huge questions in my mind as to why doctors push these drugs. Even if someone really needs to be on this type of drug, the doctor should at the very least be putting the patient on CoQ10. Statins deplete the body of these essential enzymes. I spent many years working in market research (in the computer industry). I learned that it is quite easy to manipulate numbers to tell any story you want to tell. Please don't be nieve in thinking that the drug companies don't "massage" test result numbers. All I am saying is do your own research on every drug your doctor suggests. Personally, I take many drugs, and have never had a problem until I started on the statins.

52 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I would have to agree. I have researched the matter of statins and have found that the drug companies do in fact present only what they want the public to hear.

An excellent example of this would be the recent JUPITER trial on Crestor, another statin. The drug company hailed a "47% reduction in heart attacks and strokes. That gives the consumer the impression that if they take the drug, they will reduce their chances of a heart atack or stroke by 47%. Will it?

Now here is the hard cold truth and what the drug company doesn't tell you:

That 47% number is the RELATIVE risk reduction, and fails to take into account how many people had to take the drug to spare just one person a heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes. Ready for ABSOLUTE risk reduction number? Its printed on the same line as the 47% but the they don't tell you this.

Here it is- Bottom line: 120 people had to take crestor for almost two years to spare one person a heart attack, stroke or death from CV causes. Thats 1/120th

What about heart attack alone? 241 people gad to take the drug for almost two years to spare one person a heart attack. Thats 1/241th

What about stroke alone? 288 people had to take the drug for almost 2 years to spare one person a stroke. Thats 1/288th

There. Now you have the hard cold truth about how well statins perform.

52 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

You don't seem to understand risks or statistics. To be effective, a drug has to prevent something that (statistically) would have occurred. If ordinarily 10 out of 100 have a problem and the drug cuts it to 5 out of 100, the improvement *is* 50%--half as many had the problem.
The overall risk of the problem in the example here drops from 10% to 5%.

You have to figure out *in advance* if you are in the unlucky 10% or the lucky 90% for whom it made no difference whatsoever. As Dirty Harry said, "Do you feel lucky?"

51 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I feel just like you, I also take a few perscriptions but never had a problem until this cholestorol pill. Ever since I have started,I have headaches, aching muscles (and am on Vicodin already for back pain) and it doesn't help. I am on 20mg but I am cutting the pill in half to see if it lessens the symptoms, otherwise I will have to stop.I feel like I am 100 years old and I am only 44! As for the side effects, my Dr brushed me off and told me if I don't take the pill I will surely have a stroke! Bad is 163 , good 71, total is 270

Answer/Reply:

Wow, thank you for your very insightful answer... I am going to take your advice and suggest that my mother stop taking simvastin for a couple of reasons... her memory became significantly worse after being on statins and her feet and ankles have much pain... Darla

92 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My mother has experienced memory problems since she started taking a regime of medications, including diovan and simvastatin; her memory problems definitely became much more pronounced since taking the medications. She had experienced a heart attack several years ago, and didn't know it, but her memory was quite good. She's 91. Last October 08, however, it was discovered that she had heart death (infarction) from the previous heart attack and it was then that her Dr. started her on the medications. That is when the memory problems began at a significant level. She went from being able to answer 9 out of 10 questions on the mini-memory tests a year ago (at the attorney's office while preparing her living will) to only being able to answer 5 or 6 questions. We are confused about which direction to go with medications. She doesn't want to be on any of them, and she is not sure whether the risks outweight the benefits, because she does not liking losing her memory. If she knew for certain that a medication is causing that, she would stop taking it immediately. Such a dilemma. Has anyone else experienced memory loss? Does anyone have access to any research or categorical information about memory loss from simvastatin or that category of drugs, statins? Thanks, Darla

I have been taking Tricor and Simvastatin for the last 4 years and I had no problem with leg cramps or muscle cramps. I do not take them together. The simvastatin must be taken before bedtime and Tricor take one in the morning and wait for 30 mintues before you eat then at dinner time do the same thing. So far it does helped lower my cholesterol.

Question/Comment:

Cholesterol was 280 after 28 days on 80 mg. Simvastatin it's down to 184. My trig. are great too.
My LDL went down and my HDL went up.
I asked about taking such a high doze and he said it takes 5 yrs. to rid the plaque. I'm 57
and really worried about 80mg.

But I am cutting the pills in half to only 40 mg. instead I have not told him.
I think with all the side effects and the cholesterol going down why risk my health. My sister
is taking 40 mg. and my mother-in-law is taking 40 mg. of another kind of statin.

Answer/Reply:

I was on a dose of 40 of Lipitor and was switched to a dose of 80 of Simvastatin. I was concerned about the dose but my doctor told me that 80 of Simvastatin is the same as a dose of 40 on the Lipitor and the recommended dose by doctors.

Rather than manipulate your dosage on your own I would really recommend discussing your concerns with your physician.

Hi my name is Debbie, I'm a 54, in July 55. My colesteral was past the roof, so were others, was put on Zocor. Did nothing except gave me leg cramps. I have tested this method 2 times, and it works.

Went off Zocor. Ate cherrios, a big bowl, honey nut, every morning for breakfast. And I take 3 fish oil gels a day. Everything is fine now.

Honey on the cherrios, is made from bee pollen, which has been documented to have health benifits.

Hope this helps
D.

55 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I would not decrease my dosage without consulting my physician. It sounds as if you don't have much faith in your physicians decision regarding the dosage. You should be able to discuss any problems or concerns with him and come to a reasonable understanding as far as the higher dosage. If you are unable to do this, I would find another doctor. The fact that your sister and mother-in-law take 40mg rather than 80mg has nothing to do with your particular case. It's your body, discuss your concerns with a qualified physician.

I take several medicines and they all have long lists of scary-sounding side effects. Those are just the possibilities. There's a good chance you won't get them, or they won't be very severe. Your doctor probably wants to wait and see how you react to them before changing to something else. Every one's different.

The only time I have had a problem with simvastatin is when we winter in the Rio Grande Valley and I go crazy on the delicious Rio Red Grapefruits. My Endocrinologist prescribed simvastatin for high cholesterol and it gave me violent muscle cramps I was walking the floor at night. Not even a heated blanket helped relieve them. My PCP then changed me to Crestor, which is a little more expensive under my drug plan, but I am not having the cramps anymore. Years ago my PCP put me on lisinopril for about 2 months. I had very strong coughing spells, often debilitating, so he changed me to Diovan HCT which I have now been on for over 10 years. The only time my blood pressure goes a little high is when I have to take drugs for sinus infections. I am a 62 yr old female with type 1 diabetes.

I do take both of these meds at low doses simvastatin 10 mg. and lisinopril 2.5 mg. I was placed on them after a heart attack at age 40 years young.......In my experience after a year of taking them, not too many complaints, I do get muscle fatigue/aches and have found keeping hydrated and protein levels up does help. No back pain no head aches. Facing heart attack risks are my only motivation for taking these.

Answer/Reply:

Yes, my mother refused to take several of the medications that her Dr. prescribed... he wanted her to take up to 10 medications.... we are now down to 3, due to us researching and telling the Dr. that Mom makes her own decisions and doesn't want that much medication... when we brought the risk ratings printed off I-guard, he wouldn't look at them... he told us that the list of medications he was prescribing was the "gold standard!" Balony! Anyway, it's been a battle and my Mom is now about to quit ALL the drugs... I don't know what to advise her, because if it were me, I would do the same... yet I don't want to be responsible for telling her to go off the drugs because of the side-effects, if she in fact is able to live longer on the medication (she's 91). Good luck.

Question/Comment:

I have recently been prescribed Simvastatin for high cholesterol. Two years ago another doctor prescribed Lipitor I but stopped taking it because of nightmares and depressing dreams. Now I'm having the same kind of dreams on Simvastatin. Is anyone else having these side effects? ( I, "normally", do not dream or very seldom did!)

70 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Nightmares is not a common reported side effect of simvastatin. In fact, there are no reports of this side effect on the manufacturing labeling of simvastatin. However, abnormal dreams have occurred in less than 2% of patients taking Lipitor. If these dreams continue to bother you, please contact your physician for more information about treatment options.

I have been on simvastin, for a year or more ,as my insurance charges a higher premium for crestor, that i had previously taken. I notice that i have a hard time getting words out, my husband is always saying spit it out. I also have cramos in my right hip about three or four in the morning, i take my medication at night, along with aspirin and calcium with vitamin D

69 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Statin drugs can cause muscle cramps especially when taken in conjunction with high blood pressure medicines. You should tell your doctor about this so he can switch you to a different class of medicine.

52 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Have these symptoms been bothering you since you have been on the medication? It sounds like you need to see your doctor about this. If he/she fails to give you insight on the symptoms then ask your pharmacist, as they know more about the Rx than the doctors do. I believe you need to stay away from consuming grapefruit, as this inhibits the absorption of the Rx.

An alternative to an Rx for high cholesterol may be Red Yeast capsules. This is a supplement that should also be consulted with by your doctor. It is available at COSTCO and other retail outlets. My mother has lowered her cholesterol with this and does not take a prescribed medication for her cholesterol, although my father and husband are on Rx's for theirs, so each person's needs are different.

Hope this helps.

hi Im Pepper K., I am 43 yrs old and my diabetic doc. advised me to take simvastatin last year. It made me miserable. I thought Im going to die. severe muscle and joint pains, chest pains and cant sleep, my right knee was deformed. Everyday it became worse. I complained abt it.and was given crestor, The more I cant tolerate the side effects. Then changed to lovastatin... same effects. Until I was advised to take provastatin just last week.... and so far im getting used to it. Except for the headaches but its better than having the other side effects that made me uncapable to do things. My cholesterol doctor said its really hard to take statins.... it will always have a side effects.... some can tolerate the side effects but others cant.... we differ from each other. so its going to be like a trial and error thing she said.... They also asked me to stop Gemfibrozil and replace it with another drug.... She said it really doesnt go well with any statins.... She then prescribed me a new drug which I am going to try this week.

I wish you will feel better soon... I know what you've been feeling coz I have been in that situation before.... and its not easy..... My prayers are with you ma'am.

Just as I am
Pepper K.

Question/Comment:

I should have known better but I allowed my new cardiologist to put me on Simvastatin because my LDL was a little higher then he wanted it. I do not do meds well, --- any kind. Sure enough, after ONE WEEK I had not slept for 3 nights, was extremely dizzy in the mornings, and had severe headaches. I stopped the drug and one day later suffered an attack of Ventricular Tachycardia which I have never had before. Now I have to subject myself to a (Cardiac) Electro-Physiology Study so they can find out what caused the cardiac event. Has anyone out there suffered any cardiac events for which they suspect Simvastatin was the culprit?

Question/Comment:

I want to warn everyone about a rare side effect of Zocor, which I experienced. There is about a 5 % chance of getting this side effect (so my doctor told me). I got Alopecia (HAIR LOSS) all over my body, not just the hair on my head. The hair on the crown of my head was getting thinner and thinner as the months went by. (I previously had lovely thick hair).
I consulted two doctors and one specialist, and none of them even gave it a thought that Zocor might be the problem, even although they knew there was a slight chance of that side effect!!!
And Alopecia is mentioned as a possible side effect in Zocor's product write up, but none of them bothered to check. They just told me it was female pattern baldness and such like.
It was not until I consulted yet another doctor, that he told me that he thought the hair loss was caused by one of my medications. So I did the research, and found out that the only medication I was taking at the time, that had the side effect of hair loss was Zocor. So I told my doctor and he told me to stop taking it immediately. I thank God that I did, because the hair loss stopped and has never got any worse (that was 6 years ago now). My hair still remains somewhat thinner on the crown in comparison to the rest of my hair, but it has become a lot better than it was, and is quite thick in other areas of my head. I have also regained the hair I lost on other parts of my body. (I could have ended up bald, had I kept taking Zocor.
What really makes me furious, is that there is no warning on any of the product information you get from pharmacists. If I had known about this, I would never have taken Zocor (or any other Simvastatin). Do question your doctor on all the side effects of a medication, just because it says only a 5% chance of getting the side effect, doesn't mean you won't get it. And doctors often omit telling you this. (I was on Zocor for 5 years before I found out what was causing my hair loss, and stopped taking it.)

Answer/Reply:

I am sorry to hear about your experience. I would agree that they don't give consumers adequate warning on side effects. I'm pushing hard for changes on that.

Its easy to forget that statins are a business. And like any other business, achieving sales quota and profit is the entire reason it exists. If they printed the risks in bold print above everything else, the drugs would not sell very well. They print only what they have to to slide by, and word it in a way that minimizes what can really happen.

Its up to us as consumers to weigh the risks and rewards before taking a drug ( i certainly wish I had done that) and make an educated decision. This includes following the money trail...

Sometimes, there are financial conflicts of interest that cause a drug to be prescribed to someone that doesn't even need it. Medical advise may not always be pure if the medical professional has financial interests in the drug being prescibed. Advise from internet forums may not be pure if the forum has a big pharma sponsership. And what is being taught to medical students may not be pure if their professor has financial ties to big pharma.

And the recommendation of cholesterol below 200, and LDL below 100? Investigate who made those recommendations, and their links to the cholesterol lowering industry.

We live in a broken world.

Thank you for posting this - I have been having a similar problem. I am a 51 year old female with previously lovely, very thick hair. About two years ago my doctor put me on Simvastatin (Generic version of Zocor) to bring my cholesterol levels down from 227. Six months later I noticed a drastic reduction of hair on the top of my head. I was driving my car, had the sunroof open, looked up and for the first time in my life I actually saw my scalp through my hair. I damn near wrecked my car! I have lived for 40 of my 51 years having my hair thinned out at the beauty salon so I could get my brush through it.

I went to the dermatologist ( to see if I had some scalp condition) and he found nothing wrong. Next came my Ob-Gyn (thinking my hormones might be causing it because I am in menopause) and she told me I was within normal hormonal range. I went to my primary care physician and then finally to a hair loss specialist at UCSF in San Francisco. Both told me that I was experiencing genetic male pattern hair loss and prescribed Rogaine.

My Simvastatin runs out next month. After reading your post I am going to ask my doctor to take me off the "statin" class of drugs to see if that makes a difference. Thanks again for sharing.

Question/Comment:

I have only been on simvastatin for a couple of weeks but I hate it. Abdominal pain and the gas is unbelievable, on the toilet all night long. I've tried taking Mylanta and Pepto-bismol but they don't help. What can I do short of stop taking the medicine?

Answer/Reply:

I've been on simvastatin low dose for a couple of years and noticed the ringing in my ears too. I'ts constant all day although most of the day I can ignore it.
I don't have any other side effects from it, except I have gained 20lbs since I started and even though I work out 3X per week I still can't loose the weight.

Answer/Reply:

First of all, I would call your doctor and tell him about it, and/or call your pharmacist about it...I take simvastatin and do not have that reaction to it... It many be that you are allergic to it or it may not go with another med you are on but check it out with the pharmacist and/or your doctor before you do anything else.

I buy Red Yeast Rice at Walmart.

Question/Comment:

I used to take Simvastin but my neighbor told me about Red Yeast Rice. It is an over the counter supplement. After taking it for about a month, my cholesterol had lowered and my doctor didn't give me another prescription for Simvastatin. It is much cheaper than prescription and has no side affects that I have experienced. Give it a try. 45 year old female

Yes. I have the same problem. At 70 years of age, I have somehow learned to "turn off" the ringing, unless (like now) it is brought to my conscious attention!

I to take simvastatin and suffer from ringing of the ears. I thought up to this point it was just me. My doctors say it isn't the meds, but I think it is since I have never suffered with it before.
