For me, Wellbutrin has had fewer side effects than any other medication I have taken over the years. If it can work for you, it's definitely worth a try.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
I've been on Wellbutrin XL 150 mg. and Sertraline (Zoloft) 50 mg both once a day for at least 9 years. No problems at all. However, 2 months ago, my insurance wouldn't cover Wellbutrin XL, so I started on Bupropion. I experienced some anxiety and still have it but not as much. I will continue with the generic and see if my anxiety levels off. Wellbutrin really helped me through my depression which started in 1996. It took a while to reach the right dosage, but thankfully all is well. Hope this helps.

Question/Comment:
I am on 6 different anti-depressants/mood stabalizers all which have some of the same side effects, so it is hard to tell which drug is actually causing the side effect or if they all do. I do have trouble thinking clearly, mainly remembering things. tiredness isn't a problem. I feel the benefit of any medication far outways the side effects, especially where depression and bipolar are present.

Question/Comment:
I am so very very satisfied with how well Wellbutrin has worked for me and helped me with my depression. My only advice to others is to caution them that for me the Generic bupropion is not always identical to Wellbutrin and when I took the generic I had servere adverse reaction by actually worsening my depression instead of helping. So from now on I will only use the name brand and never generic. But that's just my personal experience. And once I starting taking the name brand Wellburtin I started feeling better again.

Answer/Reply:
I have recently read an article (perhaps from People's Pharmacy) stating basically that some Buporion generics work much better than others. My personal experience has been that the previous generic brand that I got (from Publix Pharmacy), which is by WATSON LA seemed to work well without side effects. It even looks like a much better quality and has a smooth white coating with "WPI 839" on it. And it goes down smoothly (without dissolving in my mouth)
and is easy on my stomach. Unfortunately, I can no longer get this Watson LA brand at Publix, and am very unhappy with the ACTAVIS S brand which Publix has replaced it with. This new generic brand not only looks much cheaper, it also partially dissolves in my mouth, leaving a nasty tase, upseting my stomach, and leaving me with a strange "sick" feeling. In fact, it seems like it is too strong at first, rather than having a proper "time release" factor. I actually feel worse than before I took it. Perhaps, you took this ACTAVIS S brand also, and may be able to take the WATSON LA brand.

I do suffer from occasional panic attacks. This was more pronounced on a higher dosage of 300 mgs versus 150 mgs. Is is a problem?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
If your panic attacks concern you, then you should talk to your doctor about them - be sure to tell your doctor that you think they were more pronounced at the higher dose. With this information, you and your doctor can work together to decide what dose is best for you.

Question/Comment:
This is a continuation of my comment below, so please read it first. If I decide to try Wellbutrin, I will almost certainly start it while I am still taking my current Paxil CR dose of 50 mg, but if the Wellbutrin seems to help, I may consider lowering my Paxil CR dose, stopping the Paxil CR altogether, or replacing it with another SSRI like Prozac, Lexapro, Effexor, or Zoloft. Just a little more information to help anyone who may try to give me any answers.

I took effexor 75 mg for about 2to 3 years. the side affects i was made aware of are weight gainand loss of sex drive. I dropped down to 35mg for about a month and a half and then stopped. the withdrawl effects are terrible. You can look on the internet and find that effexor has terrible withdrawl effects and if you miss a dose its really bad. I would not recomend anyone take this drug.

Answer/Reply:
TO 59 y/o reply-er: I formerly took Effexor & also changed over to the similar anti depressant Cymbalta. Supposedly it would help with my chronic pain & not have as many side effects as Effexor... Neither one is a pleasure to come off of. I weaned myself off & the side effects for both were awful. I would hear swishing noises in my ears whenever I looked right to left, up or down, felt sick to my stomach etc... I will never take either medicine again. The weaning off dosage instructions were not working for me, I had to take more over a longer period to come off it & even after weaning to the lowest dose for 7 days, the 8th day I stopped all together & the withdrawl symptoms were just as bad as forgetting to take a pill for 3 days, or stopping cold turkey. I will never go through that experience again!
As far as Wellbutrin goes, it has helped me to lose weight and keep it off, and it has helped reduce my pain. I have no loss of sexual interest (in fact I have a greater desire) and have no side effects at all. I came off it for a few months and noticed a gradual increase in my pain, so I went back on it. There were no withdrawl symptoms at all. I have had a pleasurable experience with the drug.

Question/Comment:
Right now, I am considering taking Wellbutrin XL with Paxil CR, which I am already taking. I know that taking Wellbutrin with most SSRIs increases the risk of seizures and elevates iGuard safety ratings of both medications. That said, I had absence seizures (petit mal seizures) as a young child. I was treated with Dilantin, have not had any seizures since I was about 5, and stopped taking Dilantin at age 6. I probably had Childhood Absence Epilepsy and outgrew it, as I have read most children do. Listing "epilepsy or seizures" as a health condition elevates my risk rating for Bupropion to Red, but should I list this as one of my health conditions even with the length of time since I have had any seizures? Additionally, I have listed "dialysis/kidney problems" as a health problem, and an iGuard representative has already told me I should list this due to my kidney problems which cause me to have hematuria and occasional proteinuria, even though my renal function is not impaired. This condition elevates my risk rating from Blue to Orange for Wellbutrin XL as well as Paxil CR. How relevant to me is this warning, given that my renal function is not impaired? And are there any known risks of combining Paxil CR with Wellbutrin XL other than increased likelihood of seizures?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Not having had seizures for the past 20 years, you're probably best NOT checking the seizures box - but nonetheless remaining vigilant for potential seizure activity - especially potentially mild activity such as "spacing out". This is the kind of thing that all patients using bupropion should be watching for anyway as it is known to increase seizure risk to about 1/250 in patients with no history of seizures.
Regarding your history of kidney disease without decreased renal function, better to leave the box checked. Doing so would increase your risk rating to orange - which means having a risk management plan in place with your doctor (i.e. regularly renal function testing, which you probably have anyway, and a little more sensitivity to altering doses during episodes of proteinuria) - but the fact that you're not sure suggests that a little extra caution wouldn't be a bad thing. Transient proteinuria without underlying renal disease rarely affects plasma protein levels significantly .... but for a drug like bupropion that is largely protein bound, its worth being watchful.

Answer/Reply:
I donated a kidney back in 2003. At that time I took Lexapro which I was advised to continue.
earlier this year i was switched to Wellbutrin. Recently a test revealed some elevated protein in my urine. What does this mean and should I be concerned? I take 150 mg.

Question/Comment:
I take Bupropion, Estradiol, and vitamins among others. I am not sure one affects the other and no medical person has said they might, but I have noticed the following side effects. My hair which was fairly straight has now become much more curly, I desire intimacy much more often, I have lost weight unlike on other antidepressants, I also have more difficulty with sleep, and my short term memory has suffered terribly. It is so bad that I can't work. I am very sure the symptoms are from the Bupropion because when I have gone off of it, my new hair growth is more relaxed and I don't want sex as often, my memory is better and I sleep some better but the depression comes back also. I have tried other meds, and they are even worse on me. So, I choose not remember what you told me three minutes ago, I like to be thinner, have curly hair and more frequent intimacy. Things just can't be any more simple.

Question/Comment:
I have always taken vitamins along with my Wellbutrin and have had no trouble whatsoever. I have also had spells where I have run out of vitamins and neglected to buy more and I couldn't tell any difference in how the Wellbutrin made me feel.Of course, everyone is different, but this is has been my experience.

Question/Comment:
I don't believe it was a concern of interaction, but one of whether the vitamin decreased the effectiveness of the Wellbutrin. My pharmacist recommended taking the vitamins about an hour after the Wellbutrin to be sure I was getting the full effect of the bupropion. You may not notice anything 'wrong', but try taking them apart from one another to see if you feel 'better' than when you take them together.
There is also the question of what medications can be taken with grapefruit juice? This also affects the integrity of some medications by subduing their potency.
I take 300mg of Wellbutrin and 150mg of Zoloft a day. It is a perfect dose for me.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking Zoloft for many years for treatment of depression and chronic pain associated with herniated discs. About 2 months ago, I began feeling really depressed again and my physican prescribed 150 mg of Bupropion HCL ER in conjunction with 50 mg of zoloft a day.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Zoloft and bupropion, taken together, can increase the risk of developing seizures. That said, it is quite common for patients to be on this combination when stronger treatment is needed.

Answer/Reply:
yeah, same as the other comment; there is a big warning everywhere i go for taking sertraline with wellbutrin... although really anything that i take with wellbutrin will increase my likelyhood of seizures (I also have ADHD). however, i couldn't handle anymore than 300mg of wellbutrin but needed something else, so i'm on a low dose of zoloft as well (50 or 100mg sometimes). i haven't had any seizures, but it's something i keep in mind

Can I take Nyquil with this medication?
40 year old Female
Posted: 2008-02-14 13:53:04
iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Bupropion and doxylamine (one of the ingredients in Nyquil) can have additive CNS side effect - particularly in elderly or sick patients (including pneumonia, bronchitis etc.). The combination can cause symptoms ranging from mental cloudiness to, rarely, respiratory depression.
