Can this drug cause mouth sores? I was on it for four weeks when the roof of my mouth became sore with what felt like open sores. The dentist said it was unlikely that this drug caused the problem. I stopped taking it and in about one week my mouth was much better??????

Question/Comment:
I took Wellbrutin to help me stop smoking. I was switched fromLexapro for this reason. There was no warning except not to take this drug with alcohol. I became desperately depressed. I had stopped smoking before and I knew that I would become depressed for a while because I liked to smoke. I became very sad and experienced crying episodes about old hurts and pains. I couldn't stop crying. The 2nd prescription I had filled had an additional warning on the bottle indicating that if you experienced sadness or thoughts of suicide to see your doctor immediately. While I did not actually experience thoughts of suicide, I was convinced that life was not worth living. I was so sad. Because of the warning, I contacted my doctor. He sent me to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist started me on a 10-mg routine lexapro while decreasing the Wellbrutin by half. I tried it for a while, but continued feel sad but not as sad and couldn't sleep at all. Finally, without the doctor's advice, I quit taking Wellbrutin. I went back to my old
20 mg Lexapro. I am myself again. (I was taking the Lexapro for depression after the death of my son and breakup of my marriage and couldn't get over it and began drinking) I am smoking again but will continue to try to stop. I will see my doctor in a week or so and tell him what I have done.

Question/Comment:
To all that are on Wellbutrin it is important to know that the time release product as well as generic play a big roll in its distribution and effectiveness in the body for the use of depression. I have stayed on the non generic, non time release for twenty years now with a small dose of ativan and its worked wonders. I am a business owner and full time A type personality and I am truly blessed to outlive a car accident that left me with a brain aneurysm that I had coiled in 2003. Heart surgery to correct my ventricular tachycardia and with the aid of Wellbutrin I am living a wonderful life, with no depression or side affects.

Question/Comment:
I started wellbutrin a couple weeks ago to help quit smoking, so far it has not had any affect on that, however before i started taking it I was tired ALL the time, I had to nap everyday and I was going to sleep around 9. Since i've been on it I have been less tired, I can go an entire day without having to take a nap. The only side effects I feel from it is nausea and if I forget to take it I am really crabby.

I have been taking Welbutrin for twenty years now and my life has truly changed. Have had my own business for twenty years now and my depression is truly gone. The thing I have noticed about welbutrin is that you have to take the non generic brand as well as non time release. It is an awesome antidepressent but it has to be in its true form or it doesnt work properly. I have done alot of research on the drug as well as talked to my doctor who specalizes in mood disorders. If you need to talk you can e-mail me at Asc4586621@aol.com.

I am a Doctor who practices in San Diego, and I couldn't help respond to your posting. I see this all too often in my practice. You need to get to the bottom of your neurotransmitter imbalance, and this can be tested for you by a Doctor through Neuroscience, you can then be put on the right SSRI or SNRI or maybe even natural amino acid therpy to help you. Right now your Doctor is just prescribing in the dark and giving you what ever the lastest drug rep told them was best.
I hope you find your answers.

I've been on Wellbutrin XL 150 mg. and Sertraline (Zoloft) 50 mg both once a day for at least 9 years. No problems at all. However, 2 months ago, my insurance wouldn't cover Wellbutrin XL, so I started on Bupropion. I experienced some anxiety and still have it but not as much. I will continue with the generic and see if my anxiety levels off. Wellbutrin really helped me through my depression which started in 1996. It took a while to reach the right dosage, but thankfully all is well. Hope this helps.

I am so very very satisfied with how well Wellbutrin has worked for me and helped me with my depression. My only advice to others is to caution them that for me the Generic bupropion is not always identical to Wellbutrin and when I took the generic I had servere adverse reaction by actually worsening my depression instead of helping. So from now on I will only use the name brand and never generic. But that's just my personal experience. And once I starting taking the name brand Wellburtin I started feeling better again.

Answer/Reply:
I have recently read an article (perhaps from People's Pharmacy) stating basically that some Buporion generics work much better than others. My personal experience has been that the previous generic brand that I got (from Publix Pharmacy), which is by WATSON LA seemed to work well without side effects. It even looks like a much better quality and has a smooth white coating with "WPI 839" on it. And it goes down smoothly (without dissolving in my mouth)
and is easy on my stomach. Unfortunately, I can no longer get this Watson LA brand at Publix, and am very unhappy with the ACTAVIS S brand which Publix has replaced it with. This new generic brand not only looks much cheaper, it also partially dissolves in my mouth, leaving a nasty tase, upseting my stomach, and leaving me with a strange "sick" feeling. In fact, it seems like it is too strong at first, rather than having a proper "time release" factor. I actually feel worse than before I took it. Perhaps, you took this ACTAVIS S brand also, and may be able to take the WATSON LA brand.

If your panic attacks concern you, then you should talk to your doctor about them - be sure to tell your doctor that you think they were more pronounced at the higher dose. With this information, you and your doctor can work together to decide what dose is best for you.
