Question/Comment:
As far as the side effect that states "weight gain" I have always heard it helps with weight loss. Is this not true, and if not can you explain why.
Thanks

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
In the Wellbutrin XL prescribing information, both weight loss and increased appetite have been reported. Compared to other anti depressant medications, Wellbutrin is known to have a low risk of weight gain and sexual side effects.

I have used this for years and on the contrary to weight gain, I have lost about 5lbs my normal weight. For me this is quite a bit since I only weigh about 100 lbs. That is just my experience, of course.

Question/Comment:
I am very satisfied with this product Wellbutrin. I take 150mg, once a day, usually in the mornings. I do not have alot of these side effects. I guess you have to try different brands of depressiants before you find the one that works for you, everyone is different. "I have tried many". I have noticed that if I miss a dose for a few days it changes my mood and I feel very poorly. I have not taken the name brand only the Bupropion and it works great for me so I will leave WELL enough alone. My doctor told me it takes at least 30 days before you know if it is working for you.

It works great for me too. I was put on it 7 years ago after I attempted suicide. I'm much, much better now and don't have any problems with side affects. However if I miss taking it I will start to feel the depression on the 2nd day I didn't have it and by the third day I will start going down hill fast.

Answer/Reply:
My Dr. explained this to me when my insurance company made me take a generic form instead of the Proventil inhaler I had used in the past. i'm offering an intelligent guess here...
When you take any med your body becomes used to that specific chemical make up of the drug. Then you then have to take the generic, the slightly different chemical make up of the drug is not recognized by your body.
This does not happen to everyone, but imagine how scary of a situation it created when having an asthma attack and the "rescue" inhaler doesn't work.
Doc told me if I had started out on the generic, it likely would have been accepted by and worked for my body. He then had to fight w/ the insurance company to make them cover the name brand. Another thing doc told me was "it is your body, you know what is going on inside of you, don't let anyone try to convince you that your are not feeling__(insert problem)___, when you know you are."
Words to live by! BUT, when I started taking the generic Wellbutrin, I had no problem what so ever. Go figure.

I've been taking Bupropion since July and love it. I did get headaches at first when I started with 150mg but they went away. Then headaches again when my dosage was raised to 300 mg. But they only last a few days. Now I get a headache if I forget to take it!
I was recently diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency but don't know if it has anything to do with the Bupropion. The Bupropion has been a lifesaver for me. No other anti depressant has worked. Plus I quit smoking two weeks ago and I think it helps with that too.

Answer/Reply:
The generic medication may be the same as Wellbutrin but the time release capsule is not. The patent for the Wellbutrin capsule has not expired, and the generic substitue does not release the medication gradually as the Wellbutrin does. Instead, there is a surge of medication into the body followed by a lack of or shortage of medication thereafter. The most recent news release may be read in the following link. http://www.pharmalot.com/2008/09/fda-to-review-generic-wellbutrin-again/

Question/Comment:
I was tapered off of Fluoxetine on to Bupropion and I've been taking 300 mg of Bupropion XL for about 6 weeks now. I have a constant feeling of dizziness and frequent headaches. I have woken up in the morning and almost fell over because I couldn't keep my balance. I got out of the shower once and went to flip my head over to put the towel on it and when I stood up I felt like I was going to black out. I had to grab hold of the sink. I find that I also feel like I will black out when I am playing sports. I often have to stop and take a breather so I don't pass out cold in the middle of the court. When I lie down for bed, I often have muscle spasms that I never had before. I feel like my appetite has returned at full force so I have naturally put on some weight. On a better note, Bupropion has given me my energy and libido back. It does not effect my sleep the way it does to others.

Sounds like you are on too high of a dose... if your doctor prescribed you for 300 mgs right off the bat, then they are the batty ones... you should slow increase this med. I was on 100 mgs of this, and I was supposed to move my dosage up, and it being too expensive for me out of pocket (after insurance paid their part) i couldnt take it anymore, and I wish i could... it was doing a world of good for me!!!

You are too young to have side effects like the ones you describe. I agree, your dosage is too high. I had similar results on the 300 mgs and suggest you go back down to 150 mgs. Perhaps your symptoms won't be as severe.

Both products contain the same active ingredient bupropion. Wellbutrin SR (Sustained Released) is formulated to release slowly from the tablet and is taken twice daily. Wellbutrin XL (Extended Release) has a slower release over 24 hours and is taken once daily.

This is not true, most and when i say most i mean more than 95 % of generic drugs are as effective and helpful as the Brand equivalent.aybe you should consult your PCP aboput this , though . Another important factor to consider ( in my opinion) although it may seem obsolete is that your mind works in amazing ways . Just because you think generics are not good enough as the brand ones, will dramatically decrease the efficiency.

Answer/Reply:
After starting Bupropion HCL I developed insomnia, anxiety, muscle spasms, depression, and irritability. I was afraid to stop because I couldn't imagine what would happen if I felt worse. When it got so bad after three months that I started to search for another medication that didn't create weight gain and loss of libido, I was shocked to realize that the capsule for the generic does not work like the Wellbutrin. It is not gradually released. It is basically dumped into the body and then disappears. While this does not affect everyone, it is a serious cause for concern and has been brought to the attention of the FDA in numerous claims. You can easily find the statistics online by using a good search engine. Immediately after stopping, I felt better. It took about a week for the muscle spasms to go away. No one should stop antidepressants without medical advice but, in my case, the generic was creating the depression. I feel so much better that I haven't decided whether to actually take the real Wellbutrin that replaced the generic.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
For the man who asked about quitting smoking and Wellbutrin and that he still smokes.
Wellbutrin doesn't make you quit smoking, you have to plan on quitting smoking when you first
start taking Wellbutrin. I am not for sure but I think it is within the first seven days of taking it and then you set a date and it is supposed to help with the cravings.
If you take it and just continue to smoke it doesn't help you quit. You have to do it when you first start taking it.

It started a few months after starting this medication and has gotten slowly worse, spreading from my hands, up my arms and now onto my chest. Question/Comment:
Wellbutrin can cause seizures. Do NOT take this if you have a history of seizures, OR if you drink alcohol, OR if there is any other reason you have a lowered seizure threshold.
The maximum dosage of Wellbutrin SR is 400mg/day. My former psychiatrist put me on 600mg/day. I had a MAJOR "grand mal" seizure. Thank goodness my husband was home and wittnessed it or I would very likely be dead. (What if I had been driving?)
One little known fact (a good one), is that Wellbutrin can help increase FEMALE libido and help with FEMALE orgasmic disorder. (Research studies are still being conducted but a few are complete and have validated this information.)
Hope this info. helps someone.

Answer/Reply:
Wellbutrin associated seizures only occur at the highest dosages of 400-600 mg. If you are on a lower dosage there is no risk of seizures
The maximum dosage today is 450mg, if your doctor is prescribing more, I would get a second opinion or see if another drug would work better.

I have to disagree! I was only taking a low dose of Wellbutrin XL when I began having seizures. What I REALLY love is that even after I began telling my doctors about the seizures not one of them told me to stop taking Wellbutrin XL OR that it had any association with seizures. And one put me on prednisone thinking it would cure the dizzy spells-- turns out prednisone and wellbutrin combined can be fatal. My pharmacy filled the scrip and even after I ASKED about possible adverse reactions to the Wellbutrin and neurontin, assured me there was no danger.

Answer/Reply:
I am a 49+ year old female. I had a total hysterectomy at 29. I had generalized body pain with my monthly periods so bad that at times I couldn't even get out of bed. At 29, I went on Premarin.
I know I am at a high risk for stroke and heart attacks because of the medications that I am currently taking. At 41/42, I started taking Effexor for Depression. I was already taking Ritalin.
I am now taking Effexor and Wellbutrin. I take 300 mg. of Effexor, 300 mg of Wellbutrin, and 20 mg Crestor. I use to take Lipitor (40 mg) but the joints in my knees were becoming so sore I could hardly stand up from a squating position. I had to mentally prepare myself, grab onto something, and then finally pull myself up. I take Premarin in addition to the Effexor, Wellbutrin, Crestor, and Ritalin. I take several other medications too for other health issues.
I decided I needed to give my body a break from the risks and potential side effects from the meds I was taking. I am working with my psychiatrist currently to wean my off of all my anti-depressants and such. I feel I need to give my body, really my whole system-engine, a break from all these medications. I want to take a 6 month break. I am not on the Ritalin right now. I am down to 1/2 of the Effexor. By mid-March I will be done with the Effexor and by 1 April be done with the Wellbutrin. I have gained 60 pounds since I started taking all these medications. I can attribute at least 30 of the 60 to the psychotropic meds. Our bodies are like car engines. The system needs to be flushed out and given fresh fluids, ie. we need monitoring while we discontinue meds and give our body(ies) a chance to rest.
Of course, if I become severly depressed back on the anti-depressants I go.
I want to remind everyone who reads this that this is a decision that my psychiatrist and I made together to discontinue my medications for a specific period of time. I am not recommending to anyone that he/she discontinue use of their psychotropic medications for any reason.

Getting used to antidepressants, like bupropion takes some time. However, closely monitoring your feelings and behavior when you first start or change your dose of antidepressants is important. You will not always feel like this. This is your body adjusting to new chemicals. Usually, it all balances out. Be sure to tell your doctor all symptoms and they will most likely adjust the dosage till you get it just right. I've been taking Wellbutrin for 20 years and it literally saved my life. I had some of the same symptoms you mention but after a couple of months they started to fade.

I took Wellbrutin to help me stop smoking. I was switched fromLexapro for this reason. There was no warning except not to take this drug with alcohol. I became desperately depressed. I had stopped smoking before and I knew that I would become depressed for a while because I liked to smoke. I became very sad and experienced crying episodes about old hurts and pains. I couldn't stop crying. The 2nd prescription I had filled had an additional warning on the bottle indicating that if you experienced sadness or thoughts of suicide to see your doctor immediately. While I did not actually experience thoughts of suicide, I was convinced that life was not worth living. I was so sad. Because of the warning, I contacted my doctor. He sent me to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist started me on a 10-mg routine lexapro while decreasing the Wellbrutin by half. I tried it for a while, but continued feel sad but not as sad and couldn't sleep at all. Finally, without the doctor's advice, I quit taking Wellbrutin. I went back to my old
20 mg Lexapro. I am myself again. (I was taking the Lexapro for depression after the death of my son and breakup of my marriage and couldn't get over it and began drinking) I am smoking again but will continue to try to stop. I will see my doctor in a week or so and tell him what I have done.

To all that are on Wellbutrin it is important to know that the time release product as well as generic play a big roll in its distribution and effectiveness in the body for the use of depression. I have stayed on the non generic, non time release for twenty years now with a small dose of ativan and its worked wonders. I am a business owner and full time A type personality and I am truly blessed to outlive a car accident that left me with a brain aneurysm that I had coiled in 2003. It is an awesome antidepressent but it has to be in its true form or it doesnt work properly. I have done alot of research on the drug as well as talked to my doctor who specalizes in mood disorders. If you need to talk you can e-mail me at Asc4586621@aol.com.

I am a Doctor who practices in San Diego, and I couldn't help respond to your posting. I see this all too often in my practice. You need to get to the bottom of your neurotransmitter imbalance, and this can be tested for you by a Doctor through Neuroscience, you can then be put on the right SSRI or SNRI or maybe even natural amino acid therpy to help you. Right now your Doctor is just prescribing in the dark and giving you what ever the lastest drug rep told them was best.
I hope you find your answers.
