I have bad news for everyone that uses norco tylenol vicodin or anything containiing acetametaphin in it STOP STOP STOP! That is the worst addicting drug that has ever been invented. the whole thing about pain is that there is something wrong with something, right. like you break a arm it hurts yes you are in [pain but your arm is broke. you are depressed your in pain but no physical findings so what they try to figure it out and prescribe the most addicting reliever there is that is also the most damaging to your body. I know first hand exp. almost died from ehat it was doing to my body.

Answer/Reply:
I have multiple overlapping pain disorders and because a previous doctor basically accused me of coming to her to get narcotics, I DID STOP STOP, by going back to my previous doctor and tapering off the Lortab. I had been off it for about a week when the pain returned at a level that had me virtually bedridden. The level of acetaminophen in Lortab is less than a regular OTC dose. The ONLY way you can cause damage to your body is to take too much of this or any other medication.

Question/Comment:
I too find use of Lortab after 5pm keeps me awake. I have found if I am in very severe pain, & take more than is prescribed , I don't get "high". I get an extremely itchy face and body. Would swear I had a horrible rash but there is none. I have read about this side effect & believe it has something to do with a histamine effect. I am a person that for some reason gets a buzz from Ultram, which isn't a narcotic (and gets a headache but no relief), but I have never gotten high from narcotics and take 10/500 TID PRN. Seems to take higher doses of medication for me to obtain benefit of symptoms, including Novocaine (takes 3-4 times normal dose, laughing gas (does nothing), benzodiazipines (takes hours to kick in for a short time), muscle relaxers (except Flexeril because I fall asleep, but then gives me horrible RLS). I usually get the worst side effects, and I even got more pain when I tried chiropractic and acupuncture (the Doc said I was one of the 3% that react this way. :( This of course makes my regular physician look at me with "that look", and I'm sure makes me seem questionable. I just don't metabolize meds like the "norm". I have fibromyalgia and multiple protruding discs. Can anyone else, or iGuard validate me?

I can relate to you. I spent 2 years going from doc to doc and have finally been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and have protruding discs in my neck/back. Many doctors referred me to psychiatry. Only to be told there's nothing wrong with my head! I also have been playing the medication game. Finally I have found a doc that listens to me but only after I completely detoxed myself of all meds and started over again. I don't get "high" from my vicodin but it does help me get up and do some things.

Every person has the potential to react differently to medications. People have different pain thresholds and responses to pain medications - your doctor should take this into consideration when prescribed or changing a drug regimen. Unfortunately, sometimes it requires trial and error until you find a medication and a dose that works for you. If you don't feel your doctor is adequately treating your pain, you may want to seek out a pain specialist or treatment at a pain clinic.

Answer/Reply:
Both Lortab and Vicodin contain the same ingredients of Tylenol, or acetaminophen and hydrocodone, a narcotic pain reliever. However, the strength combinations differ between the two medications. One does not work better than the other; it just depends on the strength ordered by your physician.

Answer/Reply:
Lortab contains a serious opiate narcotic. It is a synthetic version of Codeine. This drug is highly addictive. Over time, the user requires more and more (higher dosages) to get "high".
Depending on the formulation, it also contains a dose acetaminophen which has been proven to cause liver damage (even failure) with long-term usage or in high doses.
Even if your son is just "holding" these for a friend (some friend), he is breaking the law if he does not have a prescription for the medication.

The one marked IP 119 is most likely Lortab. The one marked M 515 also white and oblong does not fit the description of anything with hydrocodone in it. The one with M515 and white and oblong does not match any prescription medication in the database.

THE SIDE EFFECTS STATE THAT NORCO USED WITH MOST OF MY OTHER MEDS CAN CAUSE SIGNIFICANT SEDATION. HOWEVER, BECAREFUL IF YOU ARE LIKE ME AND HAVE A BACKWARDS METABOLISM OR SYMPTOMS OF ADD/ADHD. IF I TAKE THE NORCO TOO CLOSE TO BEDTIME, I AM UP ALL NIGHT. IT COUNTER ACTS MY SLEEP MEDS. I HAVE HEARD THE SAME FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE OPPOSITE REACTIONS TO MEDS. PEOPLE WHO HAVE NORMAL REACTIONS TEND TO PASS OUT RIGHT AFTER TAKING THE NORCO, SO ADDING A SLEEPING MED IS DANGEROUS SO PAY ATTENTION!

I was prescribed Hydrocodone APAP after a bad, painful hip replacement. I do NOT respond to it as far as a pain reliever (don't respond to any pain reliever: Demoral, etc.), but found it offered great control of my serious RLS and PLMD, so I have continued its use since 2005, along with Trazadone and Lunesta. After trying all of the recommended meds for RLS, this is the only combination that works for me. I'll continue as long as it works!

Many patients use Vicodin to control their pain. However, some patients develop more severe pain or become tolerant to lower doses of pain medicines and will require higher doses. You may want to see a pain management specialist, if you are having trouble controlling your pain or are concerned about side effects. There are many options for pain relief.
Posted: 2009-12-13 09:42:58
Answer/Reply:
It is true that your body will build up a tolerance to the vicodin. I have been on it for 3 years and now just switched to a higher dose. The doctor is hoping I will be able to maintain this dose for a couple more years before switching to percocet. Then the stay on that until it doesn't work then go to the morphine. Also will be monitoring liver and kidney functions. One thing that helped me stay on the same med is when you get used to it and it stops working, take a drug holiday and give your body a break. Honestly, it was a month of pure torture for me! But it helped in the long run.

When I was severly depressed about 10 years ago, to counter the foggy head/hangover feeling in the morning, my doctor prescribed Provigil. This is an alertness medication not a stimulant. The label use is for Narcalepsy but 100 mg first thing in the morning allowed me to clear the cobwebs, focus and remain alert all day.
Mention it to your doctor...you can start out on a very low dose to see how it works for you. Good Luck!

Answer/Reply:
My suggestion would be to ask your doctor for something different, like Darvocet or Tramadol. These are considered to be "weaker" pain meds, but when you're on any of these pain meds too long, you can develop a resistance to it. Changing to something different, even if it's considered "weaker," may do the trick for you. If your doctor still refuses to help, seek out a second opinion, or find a pain management clinic in your area, and ask them to examine you, and offer suggestions. I have been on both Darvocet and Tramadol in the past, and what I found works best is switching meds every 6 months or so, so that I do not develop a tolerance or resistance to them. I hope this helps!

Find a new doctor that believes what you say! You deserve that and so does your child! I have listened to my own children say they wish they could have their real mama back! Nothing like ripping the heart out of my chest! Pain is real and can consume your whole world if you let it. Having a doctor that truly listens and hears you would be your best first step. Also, educate yourself about options and remember, it is your body, listen to it. Cymbalta is an antidepressant that works well (for me) for fibromyalgia pain. I personally got more relief from neurontin than I did from the very expensive Lyrica for fibromyalgia. Hope this helps you!

I was taken off lortab 7.5/500 & put on percocet just to end up having miagraines. I was then taken off the percocet & put on lortab 10/5oo & they are working for me. I was previously on methadone & given lortab as a breakthrough med but after losing 180lbs & having 22 lbs of excess skin removed from my stomach I asked my pain doc to take me off the methadone after being on it for 1 1/5 year. I still have pain but it is tolerable, but only if I have my lortab when I need it. I feel that I am addicted because I have to have iot but I never take over the 4 per day that my pain doc has me on. I have had 3 surgeries & they all have worked.

Question/Comment:
For anyone out there with back, leg and neck pain. I was given tylenol 4's and soma for the pain in my low back and leg pains. I took this for 4 years and asked the doctor to try something else. I was given vicodin es and soma to take 4 x a day. Some days it was hard to function as the pain was unbearable, especially during the rain and winter months. Anyway, 4 years later I am still taking vicodin, lyrica, and soma as the doctor finally diagnosed me with fibromyalgia. Some days I can get by with taking less than prescribed. I still suffer low back pain and last year my husband insisted I see a chiropractor. I was surprised how much they can help with the pain. I recommend anyone at the end of their rope with taking pain meds to try seeing a chiropractor.

If I could stand in every public square across the U.S. I would use a megaphone to say this to people: "If you have backpain at any level and you toss and turn all night because of the pain, here's a solution that worked for me. I have scoliosis as well as arthritis on my spine and also fibromyalgia. After trying everything, I found what worked for me. Two words: MEMORY FOAM! Not the crappy type they sell at WalMart etc. but real memory foam. I purchased mine from "overstock.com" but it's available in many stores. I got the one inch thick Serta foam and I loved it so much I gave it to my daughter and then ordered a two inch thick piece.(Besides I am on the heavy side and thought it would be better getting two inches of thickness.) After 10 years of trying to get more comfortable at bedtime, I finally found a solution that worked for me! I will swear on a Bible that I have not had a bad night's sleep since I purchased it. You do NOT have to buy an expensive memory foam bed. All you need to do
is buy the memory foam and put it on top of your mattress. Please do this for yourself. My e-mail address is Imanonnie@msn.com and I would love to hear if you tried it and what you think now about going to bed at night! I am only recommending the "Serta" foam because that's the brand I purchased and can't speak for another brand.

Dear Deborah...your post on the Memory Foam solution to back pain and not sleeping will have me running out to get 'mine' right away. I have suffered for years with back pain, and it's only getting worse. I take two to three vicodins a day just to be able to function and walk for a few hours. I try not to 'over do it' as I fear getting 'hooked' on the Vicodin. The Vicodin takes the edge off the pain, but it only lasts maybe three hours. I can't wait to try Memory Foam! Thank you!

Question/Comment:
I have to take this medication for severe joint pain from my Hep C. I tried everything else (even using crystals) before I gave in to this drug. This is an addictive drug, and as such, when you take them every day, then when you are late taking a dose or miss one, you are going through withdrawals. That can make you very irritable. I have been taking this every day for 2 years now, and don't feel anything but a reduction in pain anymore. No grogginess or yucky feeling. However, if I miss a dose I am not very happy. I wish that I could get off this drug and onto something that doesn't make me sick when I don't take it. And I have to say, you do have to be careful. I have my husband keep the drugs and give them to me as prescribed, that way I don't take too many at one times, push myself too hard and exhaust myself because I feel less pain and feel I have to get everything done while I feel good. It's a tough road to go down. Good luck to everyone that has to be on this drug long term, and I can't stress enough how careful you have to be.

Answer/Reply:
I have been on Vicodin for many years...unfortunately, I am unable to take ANY Nsaids or other anti-inflammatory medications because I had bariatric surgery 4 years ago. Tylenol does nothing for me, so the only other pain meds I can take are stronger than Vicodin and I don't want to go there. I suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Polycystic Kidney Disease, osteoarthritis and a deformed hip. I have no choice but to use it. I take 4 pills (the max prescribed by my doctor) with me each day, and only very rarely do I take less than the max - partly because of the pain and partly because of the withdrawal. I know I am addicted and have to be very careful. I usually end up taking them on time to prevent the symptoms from coming back, so that I can work every day.
It doesn't make me tired, it gives me a euphoric effect instead.. actually energizes me. But it takes care of the pain that otherwise would still be there. I don't notice mood changes or personality changes, but it does make me feel "good"... hence the addictive factor. I hate the fact that I take it, but in my situation, there is little choice. I've discussed this with my doctor and he monitors me closely.

I'm not sure where you have 3 bulging disks in my spine. But I can tell you that I had 2 surgeries
In my Lumbar Spine. I have to say they worked for me. I was the one that messed them up each time.
I've bin using a cane for a few years, and now I knocked my neck out,& I reinjuryed my back each time.
This month I'll be meeting my new surgeon. I have to have my neck worked on. I have head acks always. Now I just started getting eye pain.
So for I'm going to get my neck done. I've heard A lot of good things surgery on my neck. I'm not sure how many have to be fixed in my neck. I do know after my neck is all done I will need to get my lumbar opened up again I know of 3 that that have to be done.
Pain is the worst thing, and trying to tell someone what it feels like. Only someone that has the same thing.
And yes as most everybody knows: surgeries can help and also make things worst. For me I don't think it could get much worst.

I'm sorry to hear about your condition. i too have had 2 fusions done. Time will tell if it works for me. I have heard of a stimulator where leads are implanted into your upper spine and there is a trial period of 3 weeks. during this time the battery pack is outside of your body and you have a remote device to contol the intensity of the stimulation. if it works they take out these leads and put in permanent ones and implant the battery as well. i have seen it on a man and he showed me where they put the battery. you can hardly feel it. he says it works for him.

I had back surgery due to 4 torn discs in my lower back. If you dont think that having back surgery will help you...dont do it. I had back surgery 2 1/2 years ago at the age of 45 and i regret ever having it done. They cut me across my stomach and halfway down my back past my tailbone at the same time and i hurt worse now than I ever did before. I now have a sciatic nerve on the left side, cannot feel my left buttock or thigh and at times fell numbness in both feet and hands. Do what you want, but I have a 15 year old son and am very depressed because I am so limited as to what I am able to do on a daily basis and am missing out on so much of my son's life! Only you know how much pain and inactivity you can tolerate. You could talk to your physicians about the benefits or risks of physical therapy. Some patients also benefit from steroid epidural injections. Try discussing surgery with your surgeon in more depth, asking for percentages of benefits versus the risks of surgery in your specific case. If you feel your care could be better or need more reassurance, seek a second opinion about your options.

I have fibromyalgia and have been in two car accidents where both times I was rear ended and had whiplash. I live in pain everyday and I take a lot of different medications for the pain, anxiety and problems sleeping. The only thing that helps me is the chiroproactor and my massage therapist who also has the same conditions as me. She knows exactly what to do with a deep tissue massage. I will not have surgery for my bulging disks and nerve damage. I also find that swimming in a warm pool helps with my circulation. I take 60 mgs of vicodin a day just so I can go to work and get out of my chair. I can't sleep in my bed because I wake up in so much pain so I bought a chair from Relax the Back which has made me so much more comfortable.

Hi, my name is Sandy. Do you access to a hot tub or jacuzzi. If not at home but maybe a YMCA or family member? It is something your doctor may be able to write a precription for, a type of therapy. We were in a auto accident in 1991 and being able to take a jacuzzi , I think has kept us feeling better than just with pain meds alone. I am going to mention a few things that might seem a small way to slow the pain but for me every edge I could get was worth it.
Start a small daily diary and when your pain flares try and write what you were doing or wearing or what was going on around you. Loud noises, extra stress, heavy clothing, certain foods or drink, change in weather. Those can all be triggers of pain. I am sure there are many more but the list I just made was to give you some ideas of what can trigger pain and start you on a very bad pain time. I can't use an electric blanket because it makes my pain flare big time. It took paying attention to figure out what some of the triggers were.
One more thing to suggest and that is use your searcg engine and either type in Pain or RSD. Keep yourself informed and join a support group online. I did and I believe it saved my life. Ask others what they have been doing and than try it. People that have your problems have went threw what you are dealing with and trust me, they can give you lots of help. I wish you pain free as much as possible. Sandy

Question/Comment:
I have RSD and have vidocin as one of my breakthrough meds. I only used when the motrin and tramadol don't take of the pain. The vicodin takes care of the pain but it makes me feel like crap. I feel hungover about 3 hours after I take it. I break the 7.5/750 mg tablets in half to reduce this effect. Does this happen to anyone else?

Answer/Reply:
Approximately 5% of iGuard patients report drowsiness or fatigue while taking Vicodin. Vicodin is a very strong analgesic containing hydrocodone and drowsy effects are very common. You should discuss your concerns with your doctor. Vicodin also is available in a smaller dose of 2.5 / 500 mg which may be an option that causes less drowsiness or hangover feeling for you. If your symptoms are too severe you should discuss another pain agent that may control your pain but with less "hangover' effect.

Answer/Reply:
I do not feel drowsy, I just feel like crap. I have discussed this with my doctor and breaking the tabs in half was his suggestion and it helps reduce the hangover effect. The vicodin is for the really BAD days and luckily there have few of them

I take vic for fibromyalgia and spine problems. I am in severe pain daily, I do feel groggy after taking it, but the benefits most often outweigh the groggies. I could not go thru a day without it. I realize my quality of life is not what it use to be. Would love to get my life back, but unless there is a new drug that would alleviate the pain and not cause drowsiness, I am stuck.

I agree completely. My quality of life would be much worse without the norco, but it doesn't improve it much when the drowsiness sets in. I am a mother of two young children and my moods seem to swing when the pain meds wear off and havent taken another one yet. I hate my quality of life and would love to see a pain med without the groggy side effects. I also suffer from extreme hot/cold swings based on when med is in my system at first and when it wears down. I also suffer from spine injury, failed back syndrome, failed fusion, and just added stimulator that does nothing.

This product contains hydrocodone and acetaminophen. The most common side effects of this medication are stomach upset, constipation drowsiness, and overall fatigue. Some iGuard members report memory/speech problems, insomnia, mental haziness and mood/behavior changes. Since this is a medication with significant strength, side effects can increase in intensity with higher doses. Your husband should consult his doctor if the side effects are severe. You may also want to review your husband's medication list with his doctor or pharmacist to make sure these side effects are not caused by any of his other medications.

I have been on Lortab for almost 5 years. First I had severe head aches due to a brain tumor. And with in the same week that the head aches went away I hurt my back. I have had one surgery and I'm getting ready for another. The worse part of all of this is the addiction you receive from the Lortab.. I can't feel them mentally when I take them, but my body craves them. My bones start aching, my stomach get's sick and I'm mean. They help with the pain very little. If I take them as prescribed, but I hurt to bad. So in the morning when the pain is the worse I'll take 2 and then 2 mor with-in the next hour- 2 hours. They are prescribed 2 every 4-6 hours. And they do change a persons personality. I hate them. I am in the process of trying to slowly get off of them. One pill less each two months. And it's not easy. It makes you feel so hopeless sometimes. Any doctor that gives them to their patient for long term use, just doesn't care about you.

Wow, I am so sorry that you have had these problems with taking Lortab. You didn't put what strength you were on but with a brain tumor I would guess a heavy dosage. I have been using vicodin 10/325 for 7.5 years after having both legs broken, one crushed, by a car and house. I haven't had the same issues that you described. I, obviously know that I am addicted physically to the pills, having been on them for so long but don't experience the cravings and such that you describe. My neurologist has watched over my usage quite carefully over the years and I have been able to fluctuate but keep my usage to 3 - 4 pills a day. Of course I've just had a hysterectomy and this long term usage does build up great tolerance and the percocet they gave me that I'm told is much stronger doesn't even touch the pain from my surgery. A downfall to long term painkiller usage.

Yes, when the dosage begins to wear off, you become very easily irritated and just the least thing agitates you. I actually find myself hating noise!!! I can get extremely ill at my husband and kids, especially at night. I'm not sure why, but I can discern that thats whats causing it. I have been taking them for about 12 years.

My 14teen year old is doing good after She had Radiofrequency Neuroablation. No pain at all she had the right side done on 5-1-2009 and the left side done on the 5-6-2009. We had her pain pills refilled on the 5-6-2009 and she had to take them for two days after the last procedure. The Doctor Said this may last for 90 to 120 days and the pain may not come back then. Doctor said he has done this to kids before at the age of 13teen and up. The 13teen year old has never had any moor back pain and he is 25 years old now. We did talk to him before we said yes to it. He is going to medical school this fall at texas tech. We where told too keep the lortab on hand at all time for her. She now can't sleep all night. She will only sleep only about 2 hours a night. She does not sleep in the day. I don't know what to do for her. I give her a cup of milk at bedtime. She will see the doctor on the 6-1-2009 in Lubbock.

I feel your pain, Literally!!!..I'm in recovery from having 5 (yes 5) bulging discs in my lower back. I tried the shots (actually was going every week for injections). They helped for a few days then the severe pain would return.I was on every pain medication possible, but they only fixed the pain not the problem. Then I tried a chiropractor and my life has been changed!! I started off seeing him 3x's a week. When I first entered his off I had to use a walker, I could not sit, stand or lay for more then 5 minutes without being is PAIN....Now, 3 months later, I still see the chiropractor once a week, but i FINALLY have my life back...Please take it from someone who has been there, try a chiropractor!!! They don't cover the pain (like meds do), they actually fix the pain. Believe it or not, i'm only 35 and was scared i'd never walk again! Its a long process, but its worth it and so are you. Best of Luck to you!!!

Everyone is different but tollerance to pain meds can happen. I've been diagnosed with chronic pain syndrome since I was about 30. I went through most of the pain pills till I was at the point of taking 5 or 6 oxycontin a day. I quit taking pain meds for about a year at that point and the tolerance went away. However, I had to go back on pain meds because my brain became overloaded from coping with the pain. I basically went into a major depressive episode. So yes, tolerance is possible, but, everyone will be different as to rate and amount of tolerance. I strongly recommend talking with your doctor before quiting for any period or trying to change or increase meds.

I have taken 10/500 for 8 years and became immune several times. Unfortunately, it can happen. Knowing how addictive this and stronger meds can be, when they stop working for me, I stop taking them and just get extra rest, bighting the bullett for a couple of days. When I take it again, it works to help the pain. I also take Soma with mine. I take the soma at bedtime every night to ease morning stiffness and aid sleep.
My Dr. would have changed me to percocet, the next step up, but I prefer to take as little as I have to in hopes that I can still get pain relief in my later years. This is my personal choice from seeing addicts' behaviour. I hope to prevent this in my life (although it has disrupted my life badly through loved ones). I also avoid "taking extra", having seen that more is not better. Handle with care. Too much not only can be fatal, it can turn an intelligant person into a blubbering, annoying, person people try to avoid instead of telling them the uncomfortable truth.
I hope my experiance is helpful to you or anyone reading this, to prevent the fall of a family as mine has suffered. Now disabled myself and alone, I take my meds with extreme caution. I must try to keep my mentality in condition, although my physical body has worn out too early in life. My children are very helpful, keeping my lawn mowed since my hips and spine are fuzing together with a rare arthritis. I can't let them down, either, since I am the only sober parent/grandparent left in the family.
I hope you consider the medication break and find it helpful. We don't know how long God will require us to be here in these bodies, so we need to try to take the minimum meds mandatory to get relief for future help. Good luck and good health to you.

Answer/Reply:
Hi, Dan. I too suffer from chronic back pain and sciatica. I got extremely tired of taking pain medication that didn't work for the sciatica, let alone the cost and potential side effects. I was online one day and came across a site for all-natural Wellness Oils. I'd received a sample of the "back soothe" oil, which I am now a lifetime fan of, so decided to check out the website to see what else they had that I might find useful. I found one for sciatica called "sciatic soothe", and this oil works extremely well for me! I know how painful sciatica can be, and at times just aggravating and uncomfortable. I decided to order the sciatic soothe wellness oil and try it. It works amazingly well...even better than pain meds! My mother was in a car accident a couple of years ago which damaged some of her nerves, and she suffers with the sciatica as well. She now uses this oil every time her sciatica flares up, no more pain!. Neither of us longer have to "suffer" with sciatica. We just apply a small amount of oil as directed and the pain stops IMMEDIATELY! I just thought I'd share this with you in case you'd like to try it also. I'm not selling anything, so don't worry about that, just trying to help others relieve their pain! If you'd like to check out the site I went to, here is the link:
http://www.naturesinventory.com/?Click=32142
It's very reasonably priced, it's normally $15.95/bottle, but I just checked and it's on sale now for $14.36. That might sound a little pricey for a bottle of oil, but it's not, as the bottle lasts a long time...I've had the same bottle for just over 6 months now, and still have some left. You only need to use a small amount, and to me, I'd much rather pay $15 for something that will stop the pain immediately and last 6 months or more, than to have to take costly pain medication that doesn't always work, and has side effects. I also use the back soothe oil on a daily basis for the arthritis in my spine. I rub a little on my spine and the burning, pain and throbbing stops immediately, and it helps me sleep a lot better, which is another reason I don't care for all the pain meds, some will keep me awake, and some will knock me out, making it hard for me to function normally during the day. Also, if you decide to check it out and want to try it, you can use my discount code I received (anyone can use this code!), which is FREESHIP, that'll save you the $5 shipping, but they do ship the 1st business day that you order (if it's early enough during the day, or it goes out the next day), but they ship it priority mail, so I get mine shipped to my door in 2 days! I have been trying to share this site I found with everyone I meet or know because it has saved me a great amount of pain and suffering, and there's NO side effects at all, so I can be pain-free while at work during the day (and throughout the night) and not have to worry about getting sick or falling asleep! I'm sure my employer enjoys that too. HAHA I'm sorry I didn't answer your question about the percoceet without ibuprofen, I'm not sure if they have it and/or what it's called, but thought I'd share this information with you. Good luck to you!

Actually, the ibuprofen is bad for the stomach -- it's Tylenol that's bad for the liver. But in answer to your question, yes, there are Narcotic forms of pain relievers without ibuprofen and tylenol (i.e., Oxi, Methodone, etc.). These can be addicting so make sure you follow your provider's instructions. I've been taking Norco for many years, but only use it now for taking the edge off of my pain (2 in the morning and 2 at night) -- NOTHING touches my bone pain, and I'm going on over 20 years with this. I refuse to go on Oxi ro anything like that...I just use ice-packs and heating pads to help cope. But, you have to do what you have to do -- only you know what works with you. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm not sure where you live, but I also have had back surgery (lumbardisectomy) in October 2007. I still suffer from severe arthritis and spurs in my spine, but I've also had the injections. I found an incredible pain management doctor in St. Peters, Missouri. He does the injections in his office, and you lay on the "bed" under an x-ray machine, so he can see EXACTLY where the needle is going. I'd previously had numerous injections of the same type in AZ, but not one of them was done under an x-ray, which my current physician says can be extremely dangerous. If they can't see where the needle is going, they don't know what could be obstructing the path, such as scar tissue, or a disk or anything else that might be "out of place". Thankfully, I never had any ill effects from my previous injections, but after seeing this doctor, I will NEVER have them done again unless it's under an x-ray machine. The injections themselves only take a couple of minutes, and although they are very painful at the time they're giving them, it has helped my pain a tremendous amount! Good luck to you, and in case you'd like to know, my pain doc is Dr. J. Al Vellinga and he's at Physician's Pain Clinic in St. Peters, MO. His phone number is (636) 936-0400, and he accepts all major insurance plans, as this is (as most treatments are these days!) a very costly procedure. Good luck to you! Bren

Answer/Reply:
There is a difference between ADDICITION and DEPENDENCE.Addicition is when someone, often who uses a mind-altering substance for "fun", taking more and more to achieve a certain effect. Addicts usually are not prescribed pills they take, or other illegal substances.
Being DEPENDENT on a drug is due to an ailment too painful to live with and lead a normal life; therefore, that PATIENT is prescribed a pain-reliver & takes it as prescribed. IF the pain is worse (which often is the case, expecially if the "injury"- or wharever - is known to get pogressively worse), then the MD should upgrade either the doseage and/or the strength.
In a perfect world, there would be no pain - but that is not reality. If you have an MD who sees it this way - find another. Also, Psychologists (PhD's) are more prone to understading this, so see one if "Doctor Shopping" is too hard (also expensive).
My brother, a Psych/Neurologist takes 10-80 mg. oxycodone daily - he doesn't believe one should live their life in pain. Naturally, he monitors closely the date/s of refills for his patients, and if he finds them being filled too soon, will call the patient in and ask why? If there is a bonafide reason for the pain, he will work with the patient. If not - then, perhaps it could be addiction - but that is usually spotted right off since patients files are sent to him prior to the first appt.
I feel for you. It's too bad there are some MD's who don't understand what it is like to live in pain days - and nights, too. Once one of them has experienced it themselves, they understand, or MD's who have been on the job awhile.
The "new" theory for MD's is to STOP ADDICTION, but they don't get the difference. When someone, especially over 40 has pain, they are usually not addicts. Why not let them live life more comfortably?
Perhaps you can explain this to your health care plan, and they can refer you to an MD/PSYCH who can help, or a pain clinic.
Good luck!
BTW - They make NORCO in 10/325, also. It helps to take it regularly BEFORE the pain begins, as it works better. Stick to a schedule.

Your brother also will become very addicted but I'm sure he probably is already, along with myself. I can relate to him though, I have had 3 neck surgeries and a lanmendectomy, which my doctor told me recently the medical community let me down.. He was not the doctor that did the surgeries. Now I have 5 discs in my back that are detriatingI and scoliosis. I guess that's commn. I have had all the injections, eperderals, etc. Nothing helps This docor just doesn't want to do a back surgery at this point since my neck sugeries did not relieve ANY pain. I take Norco and 3 oxycotin per day. However if I want to get off of them, and really see pain, I would have to go to the hospital to detox, THEN WHAT???.I told my doctor that i was probably dependent on them His remark"it's not your fault, you have to have some knd of life.' That pretty much sums it up.However, your brother is takng TOO many oxys , they do help the pain for about 6 hours. You must be able to take some pain. Oxys are like heroin and when and if you have to detox, it will probably lke being detoxed from heroin. Scares me!!!!!

I have now had 6 spinal fusions. 5 lumbar & 1 multi-level cervical fusion. For the 1st time in 10yrs I do not have a cane in my hand. As for the pain. No, it isn't gone. In fact my pain meds have just been increased. I now take Vicodin 7.5/750. If you are not getting relief from your pain meds, you need to tell your doctor. If he/she treats you like a drug seeking addict, maybe it is time to find another physician. A pain specialist is something that you should look in to.
As for the injections. I have so many of them over the years that I lost count. I too found no relief. not after a single one.

I had that problem with Drs assuming I just wanted the drugs also. Don't give up, you have to search for a good Pain Specialist. They will understand and help you. Regular Drs don't have the training or background to understand people who are dealing with chronic pain. But Pain Specialists do. That's all they deal with. Look for only Drs who have that title. Also, if you have faith pray....

I found a FEMALE neurologist who is caring and does not try to patronize me, as the male foreign MD's have always done, with the exception of Dr. Ajmani, the rheumotoligist who found my problems. It was not a gender bias with him, but he is very much against narcotics. I am very much against constant pain, so I found her. My MD treated me as you described, although he pumped narcotics into my addict ex for the asking. It is hard to get proper healthcare for women, as most of our medical docs are not Americans, they want to give women sedatives or antidepressants, pat us on the head, and send us to our kitchens. Lol.We wish it was so easy.
Find a female Dr. of any nationality who will take your pain seriously. Women know and appreciate how hard we have worked our bodies, have the ability to listen, and are willing to help. I HAD to do this years ago, and have an appointment with her today.
To the men reading this, no disrespect intended. Respect is a two way street that many American men love and appreciate, although some still live in the dark. May God bless you all.
I hope this helps. Meanwhile, I get much relief from the theraheat pads on the days I take breaks from my meds to keep them working. I choose not to go stronger than the lortab 10/500 and soma for the pain. At only 47, I wish for something stronger for my later years.
The injections are a money racket, as I haven't known anyone they have helped more than a couple days. They even went inside my spine, injected the disc, pushed the threaded needle down into my sacriun for a second injection, shooting fire into my toes, making me flop like a fish, then scolding me for the involuntary movements he caused. Very painful and expensive. Never again.
Good luck and God bless you. I hope my advice has been helpful.

Vicodin is a combination medication containing both hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Acetaminophen, when taken in large doses or over a long period of time, can affect the liver. Acetaminophen is also found in many over-the-counter cold medicines and pain reliever products, so you need to be careful about the total daily amount of acetaminophen that your are taking. If you need to take an over-the-counter product, always check with your doctor or pharmacist first to make sure the product does not provide you with more than your daily recommended dose of acetaminophen.
Oxycontin and hydrocodone can both cause constipation, which could lead to blood in the stool. There are other issues can also cause blood in the stool. It is best to follow up with your doctor as soon as possible to discuss your symptom of blood in your stool.

I have been on Norco also for about 5 years now 10/325 two every 4 hours due to three knee surgeries and right elbow surgery that left the nerves messed up. They wont shut off, so I am living in pain. I was taking 2 every 6 hours but it got so bad I couldnt use my arm. I do go to a Pain Management Dr. I had to go to the Hospital recently and was told my Liver enzymes level was elevated but my Family Dr. or Pain Dr. hasnt seemed worried. They havent said anything else about it, so I guess I need to demand a CBC myself. BTW I do love my Dr. dearly. They really believe no one should live in pain.

I have been taking Lortab 7.5 mg every 4 hours for the past 3 years to control pain from post-chemotherapy. Lyrica controls the neuropathy wonderfully but if I don't take the Lortab I have horrible joint pain. I have tried cutting back slowly but it signifigantly changes my moods. I feel as though they expected me to die so they did not consider the long time addiction if I lived through it. I am concerned about the damageit is doing to my liver. How can I safely wean off the Lortab and just deal with the pain?

Answer/Reply:
I have been taking Vicodin 7.5/750 mg 1-2 tablets three times a day since 1997 when I have my very first back surgery. The amount of acetaminophen I was taking in a day was a concern but they can monitor your liver values every 3-6 months.
Have you or your doctor considered that the joint pain may be from some type of arthritis since it is in the joints. I have also been told found it to be true that drinking as much water on a daily basis as you can will help with joint pain as it relubricates your joints.
Also, if you are addicted to that particular medication or any medication/drug for that matter when you try getting off of it/weaning off of it you are definitely going to have some MOOD/ANGER issues but they do go away in time. But you need help from your doctor while weaning off this medication so they can monitor your vital signs and just you in general for your safety and well-being.
Hope this helps you some - sorry it is so minimal.

try to change to 5.0 like 500 mg for few weeks then try to cut down like 2 times a day then few weeks to change 1 a time day then few weeks to stop. My body is awful painful but I ingore it and still take vicodin once awhile if too serious. I used it without it like If I go out then I will use it to calm down on my body to walk around. if not move around like still it wont bother you. Good Luck or You ask your family doctor for second idea? Good day!

Global Patient Feedback for Norco (Hydrocodone with Acetaminophen) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I have bad news for everyone that uses norco tylenol vicodin or anything containiing acetametaphin in it STOP STOP STOP! That is the worst addicting drug that has ever been invented. the whole thing about pain is that there is something wrong with something, right. like you break a arm it hurts yes you are in [pain but your arm is broke. you are depressed your in pain but no physical findings so what they try to figure it out and prescribe the most addicting reliever there is that is also the most damaging to your body. I know first hand exp. almost died from ehat it was doing to my body.

What is Lortab?
Is it another type of pain pill such as Vicodin?
Does it work better?
52 year old Female – Source: iGuard United States

iGuard Answer/Reply:

I am not abusing these medications because I still funcation as a student. I am studying internet Web design and Microsoft Windows System Administration. And by the way, I just turned 72 recently. Answer/Reply:
Wish you GOOD LUCK

I was hit as a pedestrian by a SUV about a 1 1/2 ago and take 4 Norcos a/day. I am pretty much in constant pain and already had a double spinal fusion L3-5. L5-S1 is still a problem. I have heard about some kind of implant and you control the pain by actually pushing some kind of mechanism that you wear on the outside of your body. Has anybody else heard of this? I am concerned because I am also epileptic. I have tried everything else and I am not yet ready for another fusion! Good Luck to everyone!

Just think real hard about surgery before making a life changing decision.
Best of luck my friend,
Tina

If possible you might try one of those tables, where your anckles are fastened and you just throw your arms over your head and it inverts you thus opening your spinal column, if it is alright with the surgery you've had befor, I hope this is of some help. This technique helped my sister, with her back problems, she uses it 3-4 times a day for 10-15 minutes.

Does this happen to anyone else?

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Approximately 5% of iGuard patients report drowsiness or fatigue while taking Vicodin. Vicodin is a very strong analgesic containing hydrocodone and drowsy effects are very common. You should discuss your concerns with your doctor. Vicodin also is available in a smaller dose of 2.5 / 500 mg which may be an option that causes less drowsiness or hangover feeling for you. If your symptoms are too severe you should discuss another pain agent that may control your pain but with less "hangover' effect.

Answer/Reply:

I hope my advice has been helpful.

well i was injured on the job 4 years ago. I have been taking vicodin and oxycotin off and on. but now i notice that when i went to doctor they told me that the drugs might be affecting my liver, because readings were not normal, and the other day i saw blood in my stool. so i want to know if anybody know if that could cause that problem.

Question/Comment:

Good day!
