Global Patient Feedback for Vicodin (Hydrocodone with Acetaminophen) ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I"ve taken this drug for years in large doses prescribed by a doctor, the worst side effect that does not seem to go away is fatigue, however I also experience sweeting about 1 and a half hour after each dose.
these seem to be normal side effects and if you have severe pain this is the best it gets without being on a more narcotic form of pain reliever.

When I Take vicodin 500 mg. about 4 times per day. I have very bad nightmares. It really messes with my head when I'm just starting to doze off. Very bad head spinning & can't seem to come out of it. I only do it when i take the pills. I;m sure it's not normal. Very scary feeling. Is it caused from taking it?

Lortab is a combination product that contains the opioid pain medication hydrocodone along with the pain medication acetaminophen, which is commonly called Tylenol. Lortab is most often used to treat pain.

Question/Comment:
I took one Vicodin (actually generic hydrocodone-APAP 5-500) last night for pain from a pulled muscle in my shoulder. Around the same time I experienced some pain relief, my throat got all filled with mucus and my eyes ran like fountains. I had to take a Benedryl which stopped those symptoms. I don't find these symptoms listed as Vicodin side effects. Did I have an allergic reaction? I should probably also say that earlier in the evening I had a shot of Toradol at the walk in.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Although these are symptoms of an allergic reaction, it is difficult to say what caused your mucus and watery eyes. It may have been the medications, or maybe it was something else you were exposed to in the air. You should let your doctor know about your experience - he or she can better determine what might have caused the mucus and watery eyes.

Answer/Reply:
I have had this problem since I started taking the Vicodin as well. At first I did use the stool softners and I realized that this can't be good for me to have to take them so often. So instead, I now make sure that I eat a decent serving of GREEN vegetables for dinner. Whether it be spinach or broccoli or something in between. By morning, after my first cup of coffee, I no longer have the problem.
I got concerned after reading that an excessive use of laxatives OR stool softners can be hazardous to your system.

Oh, yeah, you'll have that problem any time you have to take meds. It's not just the Vicodin, either, lots of different medications can cause this. Learn to embrace veggies, high fiber cereals, etc. Seriously, your mother was right - eat your vegetables!

Question/Comment:
Will vicodin cause problems with my kidneys? I already have kidney disease.
66 year old Female
Posted: 2008-09-28 11:36:29
iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Vicodin does not usually cause kidney problems. However, the kidneys are needed to get rid of Vicodin from the body - so your kidney disease may affect the drug levels of Vicodin in your blood. You may only need to use a small dose to get the benefits from the medication. Make sure your doctor is aware of your kidney disease and that you are taking Vicodin. You will want to closely monitor your pain and side effects and report this information to your doctor so that he or she can adjust your dose if needed.

Answer/Reply:
Vicodin is hydrocodone and acetaminophen(tylenol). But there are other medications which are combinations of hydrocodone with aspirin or with ibuprofen. The man you were answering was talking about Norco, which he says and I am sure he knows what he is talking about, is hydrocodone and aspirin.

Answer/Reply:
People should be aware of the pharmacological facts of drugs before they make statements. This pertains to several comments on this page. First, Vicodin is 5 mg. hydrocodone and 500 mg. acetominophen ( Vicodin- EX is 7.5 mg.). Second, Norco is 10 mg. hydrocodone with 325 mg. acetominophen, not aspirin. The only drug approved for sale in the U.S. by the FDA containing both hydrocodone and Aspirin is called Damason-P. It is a brand name only prescription, with a dose of 5 mg. hydrocodone and 500 mg. Aspirin. I think the wisest things that anybody can do who is prescribed a medication is to listen to their doctor, ask questions, research the medication, and bring up any other questions with their physician.

Is it true Norco is aspirin and not tylenol? I was not aware of this. Please respond.

Answer/Reply:
I've taken Norco and it is not asprin it is tylenol as far as I know. At least that is what the label said. I've never seen any hydrocodon mixed with asprin. Unless it is a special mix made by the pharmisist.

I took Lorcet Plus for a year during 2 knee surgeries. Now I am suffering from kidney damage and would not have taken it had I known this could occur. The pain would have eventually left, but the kidney damage is permanent. Is this a common problem assocaiated with Lorcet Plus?

Answer/Reply:
This medication is one of many various forms of hydrocodone with Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen sÄtâ²ÉmÄn'ÉfÄn, an analgesic and fever-reducing medicine similar in effect to aspirin. It is an active ingredient in many over-the-counter medicines, including Tylenol and Midol. Introduced in the early 1900s, acetaminophen is a coal tar derivative that acts by interfering with the synthesis of prostaglandins and other substances necessary for the transmission of pain impulses. Although its action is similar to that of aspirin, it lacks aspirin's anti-inflammatory and blood-thinning effects, is less irritating to the stomach, and can be used by people who are allergic to aspirin. Heavy use, however, has been linked to an increased incidence of liver failure, especially in heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages and in those who are not eating enough, and overdose, especially in children, can be fatal. http://plus.aol.com/aol/reference/acetam/acetaminophen?flv=1
AnalgesicÄnâ²ÉljÄ'zÄk, any of a diverse group of drugs used to relieve pain. Analgesic drugs include the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as the salicylates, narcotic drugs such as morphine, and synthetic drugs with morphinelike action such as meperidine (Demerol) and propoxyphene (Darvon). Aspirin and other NSAIDs (e.g., acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen) reduce fever and inflammation as well as relieve pain. Narcotic analgesics and the morphinelike synthetic drugs depress the central nervous system and alter the perception of pain. They are used to alleviate pain not relieved by the NSAIDs. NSAIDs and other analgesics are also used in combination, as in Tylenol with codeine and Darvocet (Darvon and acetaminophen). Recently, patient-controlled analgesic techniques have been introduced, in which patients have the option of injecting small quantities of narcotic type analgesics to control their own pain. Microprocessor-controlled injections may be made through intravenous catheters, or through a catheter into the epidural (covering of the spinal cord) area. In addition to analgesic drugs, various techniques, such as acupuncture, hypnosis (see hypnotism), and biofeedback, are used to alleviate pain.

Question/Comment:
I take this for the pain of RSD/CRPS. It works well for me with no side effects at all. I just recently went from 7.5/325 to the norco 10/325 after being on the 1st dose for over 2 years. It's actually cheaper than the other by $20. I have no insurance either. There's never a problem with addiction if you take your meds and there's a big difference between addiction and dependence/tolerance to pain meds. I've learned it all these past 5 years and being looked at as some kind of drug seeker when my fondest wish is to never have to take another pill again when reality is I'll be taking them the rest of my life.
