Global Patient Feedback for Acyclovir ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I take this medication for herpes outbrakes, rather than the more expensive meds for herpes that one takes daily. I feel this med taken only as needed (for 5 days at on set of outbreak), and then off of it until needed again, will prevent me becoming immune to this medication. Also, then I am not addicted to a medication and can be free of unknown side affects on off days.

Question/Comment:
This was prescribed by my opthamologist due to my having had shingles on my face several years ago. I am to take it two weeks before surgery for cataract removal and two weeks after surgery. I hope it works! I was told it was to prevent a possible "rash".

Question/Comment:
In my initial use of acyclovir, mild side effects such as headache or tiredness disappear soon after the body gets use to the med. I only take the med when I eat grains, nuts, seeds, chocolate or protein supplements, all which contain a concentrated amount of the amino acid arginine which makes my herpes break out. If I could eliminate all the above foods then I would not need to take acyclovir but I am unable to abstain from those foods especially grains since they are so pervasive in many foods. Acyclovir has been an absolute blessing for me because of constant herpes breakouts before I took acyclovir. I highly recommend it especially for preventing herpes eruptions. After a full break out occurs, it takes me a number of days to heal even with using acyclovir so I use it as a preventative measure due to almost constant serial eruptions. It sucessfully prevents all my breakouts if taken with the foods listed above so the virus is subdued even with the concentrated arginine foods. Every person has different frequency and intensity of breakouts so one may have to monitor potential breakouts versus acyclovir frequency use and dosage to determine best scheduling of medication.

Question/Comment:
Just read all you can about your medications and don't let the doctors make you feel timid about speaking up with your concerns. I (so far) prefer to continue with the drug, and deal with the side effects, rather than having the painful and embarrassing breakouts. That might change if side effects increase or worsen.

It works as a preventive measure too and not just to relieve symptoms. I take one pill a day to prevent outbreaks and haven't had one in years.

Take it as soon as you notice the pre-outbreak symptoms. If taken quickly the outbreak can be prevented or will be much less severe and much shorter.

I have used this product for a long time. i have fever blisters/cold sores that have run in my family on my mother's side for years. we tried many home remedies through the years and this is one of the better ones. i use the ointment whenever i get the feeling that i am going to get an outbreak and it is almost always very controlled.

Question/Comment:
I am very glad I'm taking this. I have not had an outbreak since i started. If you feel like your going to get one you double up on meds and it stops it from coming. It has helped my self confidence and I feel like it's safe for my boyfriend and I to be together. We take all the precautions but the meds are like a safety net and it's great!

Question/Comment:
I take this medication daily, as a deterrent for recurrent fever blisters. Since in my late thirties I was getting them very frequently and lasting for about two weeks. My mother and brother have them also. My dad does not. I occasionally get them now. I tried taking it only as one seemed to be coming on but they always came anyhow, but didn't last as long. Now, unless under a lot of emotional stress or in the sun a lot, I don't have them as often. My doc has never mentioned liver studies and seems to rely on me to even mention using the drug, which I think is wrong. I am thankful my insurance helps pay for the generic. I don't seem to have any side effects other than some stomach upset if I don't eat something with it.
