Question/Comment:
my son was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. he was put on digoxin, lasix, enalipril and baby aspirin. does anyone know if all this medication will cause him problems that some older people are having? my son just turned 2 and is bout to have his 3rd open-heart bypass surgery, so i really need to make sure that everything he has to take is going to help him more than hurt him.

Answer/Reply:
My daughter -almost 5- has been on enalapril for almost 1 1/2 years, she started on captopril. She's had 4 open hearts and knock on wood no more to go. The only side effect we have (the only other med is a 1/2 of baby aspirin) is her balance is off just after and sometimes her blood pressure is high. It's been nice to move to twice a day meds. These meds have helped.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Yes, the enalapril may be causing the cough. The cough may also be due to the bronchial condition as well.
Enalapril belongs to a class of drugs that is known to cause coughing due to the way the drug is broken down in the body. About 5% of iGuard patients taking enalapril have experienced this side effect. If the cough is bothering you, please contact your physician for further counseling about other possible treatment options.

Answer/Reply:
When I first started enalapril, my dr said I may get a cough with it. Well I was a smoker and I did cough. But I thought it was the cigs. But since stopping I still cough. So apparently it is the analapril.

I have been taking this medication for some years now. I like the medication as I do not experience any side effects, as vertigo. I was taking another medication but asked to be placed on enalapril because of the side effects from the latter.

This is a common side effect of this medication. You should let your doctor know. They may be able to switch you to another drug, which will not produce the same side effect.

I had the same dry cough. My doc put me on Lisonopril instead of Enalapril. I have a lot more energy and less coughing. Although it is still there for a while, when I lay down.

Answer/Reply:
Enalapril Maleate is the generic name for Vasotec. Taking a generic should be as safe as the trade name, thought this is not always the case. There may be different additives in the generic that is not in the brand name drug.

Question/Comment:
I am considering taking the Brand Name Vasotec instead of the generic. My doctor increased my dose to two times a day. The purpose of the evening medication was to take it before bedtime to make sure I was cover during the night. I am not sure but when that bedtime dose was initiated I started esperiencing RLS. There were several changes made at that time. I am still not sure and will confer with the Dr.

Brand name Vasotec works fine for me. However, when forced by Medco to use its generic, my blood pressure became erratic. I went back to the brand name and my blood pressure stablized.
