Answer/Reply:
I have been taking HBP medicines since 1985, I have found that the vast majority of them have extremely bad side effects. Fatigue is a bad one but is a minor compared to other ones. I probably have been on 65 or 70 different ones with side effects that are too numerous and too bad to discuss here. Some where totally intolerable. As much as I hate the fatigue, it is better than some of the other side effects I have had to deal with. It took over five years of very bad things going on to even get to a point where I could or was even able to begin to deal with taking these medicines. The side effects are not easy to deal with, but maybe are better than the alternative. They do sap your energy, that is for sure. It is a good thing I was a whirling derbish before.

I take 120 mg twice a day and regularly are on doses of prednisone which causes my BP to SPIKE. Doctor is looking for something new but hasn't found a better alternative with my Sulfa allergy. Anyone have any ideas?

Answer/Reply:
I too have a Sulfa allergy. I am on Diovan, which can be used in conjunction with Tiazac. My biggest problem is with Tiazac which will make me extremely tired. But, the Diovan is very tolerable.

Question/Comment:
About six months ago my Cardiologist has prescribed Metoprolol 150 mg. to reduce the number of extra heart beats which I have had all of my life. But because of my age (74) he feels that the extra beats present a risk and therefore should do everything possible to reduce these extra beats. He also prescribed Simvastatin to reduce my cholesterol which was around 190-200. After taking these medications for three weeks I became severly ill one night vomiting and diarrhea. Blood pressure and heart beat dropped to very low levels causing me to feel very weak. Cardiologist took me off these meds and then prescribed Bisoprolol 2.5 mg (Another beta blocker) and after several weeks I began to feel weak and tired most of the day. Returning to my Cardiologist he then prescribed Angiotrofin 90 mg. which I am now taking for the past three weeks. Again I am feeling very tired most of the day and experiencing frequent headaches. Although all three of these meds have reduced the number of extra heart beats their side effects have made my life miserable. I am wondering if these medications are doing me more harm than the risk I have with the extra heart beats. I would appreciate hearing from others with my condition and/or the use of these medications.

Question/Comment:
I was taking Hctz and atenenol. It make me feel tired and completely out of breath all the time. I couldn't walk 2 feet without stopping and holding on to something. I felt like I would pss out. Also my blood pressure stayed high around 222/117. Then I got a new doctor and told them the problem. They told me with the medical history of asthma, broncitis, and allergies, I was never suppose to be put on a beta blocker etc.. She changed my medicine to a calcium blocker [Diltaizem and Lisinopril] Right away I felt better, less winded and more energy. So check with your docter and see if they need to change yoour medicine to match your medical history. 49 year old female

Question/Comment:
For me the Diltiazem was given as a calcium channel blocker in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. At first my ccb was Norvasc, but the generic Diltiazem not only works better, it's much less expensive. It was a life saver for me for the PH. I have never noticed any untoward side effects.

Answer/Reply:
My Doc took me off all beta blockers, because of my COPD. I now take Cartia XT 240mg, PM, Lisinipril 5mg, PM, Lovastatin 10mg, PM and Lisinipril 10mg, AM, Aspirin 81mg, AM. The 5mg Lisinipril in the PM seems to have stopped BP spikes in the AM. I have experianced dizzyness and unsteadyness when I don't take the BP meds religiously and on time. I also take a nebulizer treatment in the A & PM, I use Combivent as a rescue breather, a couple times a day. I am stable on BP 120/78. 65 years old and work regularly. I walk, average, 3-4 miles per day.

Answer/Reply:
Is there color in your pills. Could you be having a reaction to that?
Have you tried prinivil or lisinopril?
Try to stick with the white colors even if you have to take two to make your dose if that could be the problem.
Check to see what the inert ingredients are. You won't believe the effect they can have.
Talk to your pharmacist and see what they say about other peoples reactions.
Check with more pharmacists if need be.

Answer/Reply:
This may sound silly, but IT WORKS. I take several meds that cause nausia. I had a nurse tell me to take 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of powdered ginger (the cooking spice). Take it dry and wash down with a liquid of mix into a cup of tea. You can take a often as you need. No side effects and no drug interaction according to my pharmacist. It stops the nausea almost instantly. As time went on my reaction the medications that caused the nausea stopped and I rarely use the ginger now. Try it. I certainly won't hurt you.

I certainly empathize with you. I have been having a lot of problems with blood pressure medicines. Like you, I have all kinds of side effects, and I am tired of the doctors treating me like I have a mental problem. I am presently on one that has me dizzy, depressed, irritable and some times aggressive. Guess what, my last visit to the doctor they decided to add another medicine because they state that my blood pressure is still too high, now I am also having palpitations. I wish I could offer a suggestion, but I am in the same boat you are.

I started using Uroxatral 10 mg 5 days ago. I stop using it because I was having mild priapism. I was using it with Cardizem. I learned today that by using Cardizem together with Uroxatral may increase blood levels of Uroxatral and increase side effects. I am stoping today 11/23/08 using Uroxatral for BPH. I am planning to talk to my doctor to go back to use Flomax.

Question/Comment:
Following my first MI, I was prescribed a beta-blocker (metaprolol). My body reacted negatively to the beta-blocker which created a coronary artery spasm in my RCA ultimately resulting in another MI. My cardiologist prescribed diltiazem ER as an alternative to the beta-blocker (over 6 months now). Since then, I have not experienced coronary artery spasm although the strength of the prescription needed to be reduced to prevent dizziness. I'm very confident in this product!

I have Artial Fib. and have had Amiodarone, which caused me to have lung problems. Now I'm taking Cardizem, but I understand this medicine can also cause lung problems. And also I have a pacemaker and also take Warfarin. I'm getting to the point where I want to stop taking anything. The things I have read about these meds makes me wonder how save are they when the cause so many side effects and interact not well with other drugs. I know these coments I have made here, are not useful to other people, but I'm wondering if others feel the same.

I HAVE BEEN ON DILTIAZEM FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR TO CONTROL PALPITATIONS . I HOW EVER DID NOT FOLLOW MY DR. RECOMMENDATION TO TAKE THE MEDS. DAILY. I HAD BEEN ON METAPROLOL BEFORE AND HAD A LIFE THREATENING EXPERIENCE I BELIEVE FROM THAT MEDICATION. SO WHEN MY DR. SWITCHED ME TO DILTIAZEM I DECIDED I SHOULD TAKE IT SLOWLY EVERY OTHER DAY BECAUSE OF FEAR OF NOT KNOWING HOW IT WOULD EFFECT MY BODY. DUMB IDEA ! I NOW TAKE IT DAILY WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS. 50 YEAR OLD MALE SHADE TREE DR.

I am also taking Cartia XT for heart palpitations. I have a condition called SVT with WPW Syndrome. I am not sure if you are familiar with these or not. It is a rapid heart rate with extra electrical impulses telling my heart to beat faster. I have taken medication for this for the past two years. It helps to lower the heart rate but has not stopped the palpitations in my case, so I have opted to have a surgical procedure to try to correct the problem. It is called a Cardiac Ablation. It is similar to a heart catheterization but is more detailed. I can tell you more if you want to know.

Answer/Reply:
I'm taking this medication for tacycardia and have been on it for over a year now. I was taking Toprol XL for a couple years, but that med made me so tired.... I never felt rested. So after seeing my cardio, he recommended Diltiazem and I actually have energy. I tried to see what it would be like without taking my med, but I don't think I will ever live without it. My resting heart rate is over 100bpm without the Diltiazem, which is pretty uncomfortable. I have gone to my cardiologist twice to have EP Studies, but come to find out I have a condition called Innapropriate Sinus Tacycardia, which is more so in my nervous system so I don't think I will ever see the day when I can be med free. Even the thought of excitment sends me into tacycardia spells. It sucks, but thankfully this med works for me. :)
