Question/Comment:

The results of a recent blood workup, indicated that I had high levels of calcium. What exactly does that mean? Should I not take calcium supplements? Does this have an effect on the bone density? I have always taken calcium supplements..am I taking too much?
Are there dangers of having high levels of calcium?
I would appreciate any responses.

Answer/Reply:

How much Calcium do you take ?
1200-1800 is about right . 3000 is way too much.

54 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Actually, I am not taking any Calcium supplements now and have not been for a year. I just had a blood workup and my calcium levels have decreased to normal. I am concerned it this has any effect on bone density..

61 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Sometimes calcium levels depend upon whether or not you are taking enough vitamin D. Overly high calcium levels can be dangerous. If you get abnormally high calcium levels, make sure you discuss it with your doctor, as it can cause stroke.

Question/Comment:

Help! I am a 47 year old female, and have been taking Calcium 1200mg/Vitamin D 400mg daily for several years. I started taking it because my parents told me about women getting osteoporosis. I tried stopping it several times, but when I stop it I get severe reactions. One is that I get extreme cramps in my feet, another is severe insomnia and my heart races. I feel like I am going to pass out. I have asked several doctors about this, and they all think I have gone insane. Has anyone ever heard of this before? Thanks.

48 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I know that low levels of calcium can cause leg cramps, especially at night. As for the other issues, have you had a CBC and electrolite check lately? Calcium can either help or hinder your electrolite levels. The dosage you're taking seems reasonable. Is there some reason you're trying to stop it? My doctor has me on that much calcium plus much more Vit. D.

Answer/Reply:

To the 55 year old female;
Have you been tested for Celiac disease. I have Celiac and for years I did not know about having it. All vitamins and nutrient's from food or supplements are not absorbed and one's bones become brittle and then Osteoporosis sets in. I also had spinal stinossis (if thats spelled right) with is another course of bone loss and a collapsed disk. I am fine now and take multi vitimins and calcium. Also take Omega 3 Fish Oil and Psyllium Husk with Acidophilus for other health reasons. Hope this was some help. All the best.

Answer/Reply:

Maria,

I take 6000 IU of liquid Calcium and Vitamin D, each. And I use to take a Synthroid. Do not that your vitamins with your synthroid. Take the synthrid in morning do not eat for a couple hours and I take my Calcium and D half at lunch and half at dinner, Also I take Biotin and Selenium for nails/ hair and dry skin since I am on thyroid medication which tends to make hair and nails brittle and the skin dry, I now thake Armour instead of a Synthroid and I feel much better! I tend to take more of the calcium and vitamin D in winter and in the Summer I take less. Best Wishes

Have you ttried contacting the company that makes your Synthroid - as well as any other prescriptionds that you were on? *Some* of the pharmaceutical companies now offer help to those who can no longer afford their prescriptions.
Good Luck

Answer/Reply:

The only comment I wanted to make is this. I was on Levoxyl (generic of synthroid) for four years. I suffered EVERY ache and pain you can imagine!! I complained constantly about Joint pain. Back pain constantly and even shoulder/arm pain. I couldn't even MOVE my arm after a while. I was given cortisone injections. Without going into too much detail (except to add that my hair was falling out like crazy), I looked up levoxyl and found others suffering the same symptoms and insisted I switch to Armour Thyroid. I feel 95% better in all regards despite my doctor's protests!! My new Endo also found low VitD but that doesn't surprise me since I'm TERRIBLE at taking my calcium.

Answer/Reply:

For a wealth of information on vitamin D goto http://www.vitamindcouncil.org
Dr Cannell is one the experts on Vitamin D in the country and he is the director of the site. You are correct Vitamin D is needed to absorb the calcium because of the way it affect the intestines. If not taking Vitamin D3 you may want to look into it as it is the natural form of the vitamin plus it is absorbed better and ha a longer half life. I take 70,000 IU of vitamin D3 myself as well as 2000 mg of calcium daily as well. I ahve a severe Vitamin D deficiency and also have osteopenia. More tha likely brought about by the malabsorbtive issues from having gastric bypass surgery over 4 years ago. I also get monthly B12 injections as well. I take 1000 mg of Vitamin C as well and also take a multivitmin and mineral combination daily. I have a Vitamin C deficiency as well. If you want to email me and have any questions on Vitamin D or my story and where I get my D3 I will be happy nto share that with you or anyone here as a matter of fact.

Answer/Reply:

when we get middle aged, especially us women, we have a hard time absorbing vit B. I was on the low side of vit B in my blood. My doc had me do vit B shots 1 a month for some time. It boosted my energy level that first day. I need to have that checked again since we been traveling and if need by I will have the shots over the pills. Because I was taking the super b complex and was still on the low side of b in my blood . I think everyone should have their B levels checked and my husband and myself are going to same endroconologist. Him for diabetes and me for thyroid. I also have copd and chf and ph. I have been doing the B complex vitamins pills during this traveling and getting checked in two weeks. Gloria

Question/Comment:

Do any one know what causes a person to have high calcium? Even when they don't take any calcium pills. I have a family member that is having this problem.

45 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I had high calcium due to parathyroid disease. The calcium was taken out of my bones because of this disease and now I have osteoporosis.

62 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Check with an Endocrinologist doctor. He/she may have a condition called hyperparathyroidism. In this condition the parathyroid, not the thyroid, is overactive an may need to be removed. It is a simple operation and corrects the problem in a matter of hours after the procedure. Do not let this condition continue without being corrected. The excess calcium may be leaching from your bones and you may get osteoporosis if it is not corrected

Answer/Reply:

It is not being absorbed properly - this is a very common reason why people test high in calcium, yet they still have calcium-deficient symptoms. The dairy industry promotes calcium intake, but what they fail to say is that the more calcium you take, the more magnesium you need. If you don't have sufficient magnesium, you will not utilize the calcium. This is a simplistic answer, because there are many other mineral interactions and relationships, but this is certainly one of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to calcium.

58 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Vitamin D is also helpful with processing Calcium.

40 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I had high calcium levels and it was an overactive Parathyroid gland. I had surgery and it is much better now. I was lucky I had a doctor familiar enough to catch this as I was told most GP's don't. It is just one other thing you might have checked.

62 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Elevated serum calcium may be an indicator of a variety of conditions. The first question is to confirm that the level is, in fact, elevated. If the level is truly elevated then causes such as renal insufficency, hyperparathyroidism (primary or secondary), or even occult tumors need to be considered.

61 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

There is a great amount of calcium absorbed from the food you eat. It is
from the food that your problem lies. Caltrate is a different form of calcium
and does not affect the calcium problems that you refer to.

For heavens sake. You have a computer. Do some research. Go to
www.MayoClinic.com and do some reading.

Question/Comment:

I had my Parathyroids and Thyroids removed in 1980 due to cancer. I take 2000 mg of calcium and 50,000 IUs of Vitiaum D also synthyroid daily. I take my synthroid in the mornings and 2 500mg calcium with lunch and 2 with dinner. I've done it this way for28 years and haven't had any problems. My droctor told me not to take the calciun and thyroid meds together.

53 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Check with your doctor but I don't believe you are able to use the 2,000 mg calcium as from what I've read and heard, our bodies will only utilize no more than 600 mg at a time and should be split up over the course of the day if you take more than 600 mg. I take one 600 mg in the morning, one at noon, and one before I go to bed in order to utilize the full amount I take. If I forget one, I don't take it since my body won't use it anyway. Please though, check with your pharmacist or doctor.
