Question/Comment:

I have been taking Bystolic for about 3 months. Before, my heart rate was always very high and now it is low (around 65-75). My BP has leveled out as before it would go high and then low. I didn't know from one day to the next what it was going to be. I am satisfied so far with the symptoms doing okay on Bystolic.

Question/Comment:

I switched to Bystolic because atenolol was causing so much fatigue. Bystolic made a big difference in that side effect for me. I've had no problems with it. However, at my last 6-month checkup my EP had me walk up and down to check my heart rate on exertion and said he felt it was too fast and so added digoxin to my regimen. I have since been feeling fatigue again. I'm going to ask when I return for another 6-month checkup in September 2009 if I can be reconsidered to stop the dixogin.

Answer/Reply:

My cardiologist switched me from Atenolol 50 mg. to Bystolic 10 mg. At the time I asked why, as they are both beta blockers. He believes Bystolic works better with fewer side effects. My blood pressure has been consistently better, my chest pains have been reduced greatly since changing. An added bonus: I seldom have a migraine headache any more and when I do, they are less severe. Bystolic 10 mg. caused my heart rate to go very low, so I am now taking Bystolic 5 mg. and it works fine. (I'm also on Caduet 5 mg/40mg, which has a B/P medicine in it.)

Answer/Reply:

I also started on a blood pressure drug -Coreg & then they added Digoxin. Like you I was so tired I couldn't even function! Those were statred in Florida & upon seeing a new heart doctor here in PA she promptly took me off both the Coreg & the Dig --telling me that both combined was the cause of my fatique & explained that the reason I was tired was because the effect of the 2 drugs caused my blood pressure to drop to low thus causing the fatique. She started me on Bystolic & I have had no problems with fatique since then. Maybe having a good heart to heart talk with your heart doc will help things.

Question/Comment:

Bystolic has increased my energy and I don't feel so zombie like. I was on 3 meds and an antidepressant. I no longer am on anything but the Bystolic and am weaning myself off the antidepressant. I feel so much better and have accomplished more projects than I have in months. I know of no side effects yet.

Question/Comment:

For those already on a beta blocker, and especially if you tolerate it well, Why should we switch to a different beta blocker like Bystolic. On the other hand, if the beta blocker is causing continuous side effects and is becoming intolerable, by all means it's worth trying Bystolic. I don't believe doctor's should switch our current beta blocker if we are doing OK. My doctor suggested Bystolic, but he did not force it on me. Besides, many of the older beta blockers have been tried and tested in large research trials with proven results. Bystolic has not.

I have just started bystolic. This is the first day, and I feel great. I seem to have no side effects so far. I will keep you posted as I have tried atenolol, lisinopril, amlodopine and Cozaar, the last three with serious side effects . 79 year old female.

Question/Comment:

I have a rapid heartbeat , and have for a long time. over 100. last year I was hospitalized due to irregular beats. multiple pvc's after a few rapid I would get one huge jump, doctor explained my heart beats so fast that it doesnt have time to clear the blood out of the chamber. I had over 600 irregular heatbeats in 24 hrs. I was put on metatoprol. The metatoprol seemed to work fine although I was losing my hair.Recently I was told by my pharmacy that the mfg no longer makes it. My doctor switched me to Bystolic so far , so good except I have put on weight I dont know if it is because of this medicine or not, hope so.

Question/Comment:

Some side effects which I'm trying to find a cause for are hair loss (thinning), weight gain, cholesterol levels and increased glucose. I'm not sure if it's the Bystolic or possibly the Pravachol I'm taking...

53 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

iGuard patients have reported both hair loss, as well as weight gain at a rate of approximately 5% while taking Bystolic. No iGuard patients have reported cholesterol and glucose changes as a result of the Bystolic.

Approximately 1% of iGuard patients reported hair loss as a side effect of Pravachol. Pravachol is primarily used for lowering cholesterol as its mechanism of action. No iGuard patients reported weight gain or glucose issues with the Pravachol.

If you are experiencing significant weight gain there could be changes to your cholesterol and glucose levels. You should discuss these side effects with your physician and have him review your cholesterol and glucose levels to determine the best course of action for you.

Question/Comment:

Bystolic is the best beta blocker when it comes to increased energy levels. Other beta blockers cause more respiratory symptoms and shortness of breath. These are things to keep in mind when evaluating side effects. Some side effects seem to take awhile to go away, but they will go away if you give them time. Heart rate control is also excellent.

Question/Comment:

What is the recommended way to quit Bystolic. I stopped cold-turkey to see if it stopped my dry cough. It did, but then I remmembered counterindications regarding descontinuing the drug. Benicar has maintained my BP well under control.

60 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

You should not stop any medication without the knowledge and consent of your doctor. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss tapering off the Bystolic.

Question/Comment:

Having taken Tenormin 50mg for over 30 years I never equated it to my hair loss, lack of libido or impotence.

My wife's cardiologist suggested I give Bystolic a try as the "mechanism of action" is quite different between these two beta blockers.

Been on it for three weeks, will inform the groups at a later date as to any improvement in the above stated issues. I did not titrate the tenormin, just switched to bystolic and have noticed no adverse side effects.

69 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

It has now been three months from the above post.

I had to increase the bystolic to 10mg and my blood pressure at last check was 116 over 68 with a pulse of 60. My internist is quite happy with those results.

The only drawback that I can see is perhaps feeling slightly more tired. My lifestyle is quite sedentary, however, and may contribute to this. I don't know if it's wishful thinking but I seem to have a slight increase in libido and impotence issues still remain, but are improving somewhat.

Question/Comment:

I was given Bystolic (2.5 mg) yesterday because of a rapid heartrate and skipped beats. She originally weaned me off of Toprol and Xanax because I seemed to be doing well. After about two weeks off of them, I started getting a rapid heartrate again and several skipped beats in a row. I got very anxious which made it worse. My question is, is there anyone who gets a rapid heartrate (especially after eatting) and several skipped beats? Do you feel a pounding and fluttering? Also, what scare me is that I get a squeeze after each skipped beat, mainly on my right side (neck, shoulder). This side is where I have a lot of muscle tension. It feels like a choking feeling, which only makes me more nervous. I've taken Bystolic twice so far. It seems to have slowed my heartrate but not the skipped beats. Could this be because I am nervous and went off both Toprol and Xanax? Just wondering if anyone else experiences these unsettling symptoms and what they do about it. Thanks for any help.

43 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

If I were you I'd be getting some tests done, cardiac; it sounds like, now I'm not diagnosing, but it sounds like you are experiencing tachycardia (rapid heart beat), PVC's (skipped heart beat) and possible angina(maybe the squeezed feeling). Plus, anxiety and maybe gerd( like heartburn) after eating. You sometimes can get that choking feeling and pain down the neck with heartburn, but need to be aware of the possibility of heart attack symptoms which can be the same. There is a medication called buspar which is for anxiety and not addicting like xanax can be. Dr.'s usually don't mind prescribing it over xanax. You can take an over the counter heartburn medicine or there's an enzyme called papaya enzyme that works wonders for heartburn and is better for you. I have experienced the horrible heartburn with the sweating, pain down my neck, arm and back. I thought of a heart attack until I took 3 doses of mylanta and it went away. Felt scary. Hope this information helps! 46yr. female

Answer/Reply:

Yes, i can relate to everything you've said to the "T". I notice that you are taking Toprol and Xanax. Is that for anxiety? because i'm taking Clonazepam, 1 mg, 3 times a day for anxiety. I've also been trying to wean off with a doctor's care. For the past 6 months or so i notice i've had skipped heart beats after a meal and especially when i'm in a sitting position after the meal. It's very scary and my first reaction is to stand up and i notice that my heart rate goes back to normal rhythm with maybe one skip every now and then. Clonazepam has its withdrawals but even now and then i feel flutters when standing. I just came from the cardiologist and mentioned this to him. I was told to go see a gastrologist and also to check my thyroid. My main concern is all the symptoms we are both having with the exception of the muscle tension. I know my body and believe that perhaps the withdrawal side effects could also be a reason. You are not alone. I found out today that there are other people having the same problems after eating. I'm going to have a stress test done, blood work done for thyroid, and a heart holster monitor. As for Bystolic, they took me off of it. It only worked for 2 1/2 months. And yes Mylanda does help. I will give you further information in one month. If you have any other information, please pass it on. I believe we'll both be ok. It could all be a reaction from a combination of medications.

Answer/Reply:

I take Bystolic 2.5mg per day for HBP. I also started to experience skipped heart beats, arrhythmia and/or PVC's. This, believe it or not, turned out to be caused from GERD (gastrointestinal reflux). This caused overstimulation of the vagal nerve, which plays role in regulating heart rhythm. I began taking 75mg Zantac OTC once in the morning and once before dinner at night, and my heart rhythm has become normal again. You may want to discuss this possibility with your doctor---but be warned, very few MD's are aware of the connection between GERD, the vagal nerve, and heart arrhythmias. I had to research this and find out on my own.

This is not intended as medical advice--please consult you MD before trying this therapy.

Question/Comment:

Hello. I can't find anyone else out there who was actually put on a beta blocker for a vasal vagol condition. I actually have extremely low blood pressure which drops quickly and causes me to pass out. I have been on different beta blockers trying to figure out which one wont make me sooo tired and dizzy. I was just switched to 5mg of Bystolic and have never heard anything about it. I just started last night and I am actually having a great day today. I walked for about 45 min. with no problems! I have been a personal trainer for years and am used to working out at least 5 days a week. But for the past several months i can't seem to get going at all. So hopefully this works? Anyone out there with this kind of condition????

Question/Comment:

I was on 5 mg. of Bystolic for 4 weeks and had so many side effects that my doctor had me stop taking it. I was extremely fatigued and weak, developed a dry cough, ringing in my ears, tight squeezing headache, stomach pain, cold hands, and the worst pain in my legs from my ankles to my thighs that I couldn't sleep. It didn't control my B/P. It was averaging about 155/90.
I have also been on Lisinopril for 5 months without any side effects. We have tried some other combinations with the Lisinopril but haven't yet found the right combination for me. I was off the Bystolic for 2 days when I noticed that there was a very obvious pulsing in my neck. After 2 days of not stopping, I called my doctor. He put me back on Bystolic every other day. I go back to see him in a week. The day that I don't take Bystolic I have a little bit of energy and not much of a headache, but the day I take it, I feel awful. Bystolic doesn't seem to be a drug that works for me.

Question/Comment:

My cardiologist has had me on metoprolol, which cause me to have problems with dizziness, lightheadedness, and drowsiness. Then he put me on Coreg, which seemed to bring on problems with asthma that I have not had in nearly 50 years (I am 61 now), so I discontinued that myself when he refused to change my medication. Now, my internist has started me on Bystolic 2.5 mg.

After I stopped the Coreg, my BP was running around 136/76, but my resting pulse was around 84-90 beats per minute. Now that I am on Bystolic, my BP is around 120/70, and my resting pulse around 72-76.

Other than the change in my heart rate and BP, I have noticed no side-effects. I am no more tired than I was before Bystolic (I have noticed decreased stamina and libido since my bypass in 2001). I am reluctant to have my internist raise my Bystolic dose, since past experience has shown me that anytime my pulse goes lower than 68 or my BP goes lower than 110/60, I have trouble with dizziness and lightheadedness. I am a farmer, and I am simply unable to function if I am lightheaded, dizzy, or easily tired. I have almost fainted on several occasions when doing moderately heavy work.

Answer/Reply:

Bystolic or Nebivolol lowers BP as well as pulse rate. Don't worry even if rate is 50-55. Nebivolol does not affect libido. I'm on Bystolic 2.5 over last 2yrs.

Question/Comment:

I've been taking this just a few days and it has really lowered my BP from 160-170/100-110 to 105-110/70-80. It has also lowered my HR considerably. My resting HR was about 58-65 now in the mornings it is around 40 and low 50's as a normal resting heart rate. I can't seem to raise it able 130 when exercising and my average has dropped to 120. Normal for me is an 155-160 average with 170 for extended periods of time and a peek of 178.

Question/Comment:

I was prescribed Bystolic 5 mg each day and Sular 10 mg every other day by a cardiologist a year ago. The combination did a good job of controlling my blood pressure. Lately the Sular has been causing me abdominal pain, so I stopped taking it. I do feel the grogginess from Bystolic that is described by some of the postings. I worry when I'm driving to work that I'm on auto-pilot, and not paying attention to what's happening. I may cut the Bystolic down to 2.5 per day and see what happens. My doctor gets irritated when I self-regulate the meds. He has prescribed a few different types, and I can tell he thinks I'm too picky about the side effects. I'm a 51 year old woman, and I don't think I should have to put up with side effects that make me feel awful.

Answer/Reply:

I take Bystolic, cozaar and Lipitor since by-pass surgery two years ago. The meds are doing a satisfactory job with blood pressure and cholesterol. However, since surgery I am experiencing severe fatigue, and I am wondering if the meds are responsible. My doctor thinks not, but has no other explanation for fatigue. Told me to up my daily intake of caffiene for energy, which I do not choose to do. Suggestions please.

82 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Both Bystolic and Cozaar may lower your blood pressure, which may cause fatigue. Approximately 10% of iGuard member using Bystolic reported fatigue as a side effect and approximately 5% of iGuard member taking Cozaar reported fatigue as a side effect. Since caffeine can increase your blood pressure, it’s not the best choice to help fatigue in someone who has high blood pressure or heart problems. If this symptom continues to bother you, it is a good idea to follow up with your doctor to make sure your blood pressure is not too low. You can also ask your doctor to consider a trial of lowering the dose of your medications - side effects may lessen with lower doses of medication.

Answer/Reply:

I take 2.5 mg of Bystolic a day and my blood pressure was back down to normal and I function just great. 5 mg a day made me feel very lazy and I slept alot.

Question/Comment:

Benicar HCT 40/12.5 was not controlling my BP after some years on it. I take 5 mg. of Bystolic around 8 PM. I have been on this for close to five months. It seems to really help my BP both the top and the bottom but after a while I feel as if I am close to a zombie with none or little interest in socializing, reading and even cleaning. I started to decrease the dose and even stop taking it for a few days. I feel emotionally improved but I have to go back because my BP starts to increase again. I am going to discuss this with the doctor. I have not mentioned it before, as I did not want to keep trying all sorts of other medications. I find that too difficult and a loss of time, as well as a great discomfort in some cases. I started with Tenormin and HCT quite a few years, then was switched to Benicar HCT. That seemed great in comparison for maybe four or five years. However, the Benicar HCT is not as effective alone, now

Answer/Reply:

I have been on Bystolic for about 6 months and I am still having issues. I was taking 5 mg & had to reduce it to 2.5 mg because I felt like a total zombie. I have lost interest in everything I used to enjoy and I feel quite anxious all the time. This medicine is not controlling my blood pressure and now my doctor has added another medicine (Clonidine). There has got to be one medicine out there that will work me, because I feel out of it all day long with these two.

I have been om Bystolic for about 6 months and have cut the dose from 5 mg to 2.5 per day. I'm still feeling sleepy and groggy, even though I take it at night. Lately, my feet are swollen and painful, and my doctor added HCT 12.5 daily. This diuretic helps the swelling a bit, but my feet are still sore and sometimes become bruised from wearing certain shoes. Suggestions?

I started taking Bystolic about one (1) month ago. When I started taking it I was so tired and listless I could hardly function much less get out of bed. I was going out of state over the holidays and didn't want to feel like this, so I went in for a quick check up and my cardiologist told me it would take 4-5 weeks before my body adjusted to this new med. It has been about 7 weeks and I am feeling much better. He took me off of 6.5 mg of Coreg a day and changed me to 2.5 mg of Bystolic. One good side effect it has made me lose weight 5-7 lbs. I will be going in for a check up at the end of January. One thing is it does make me feel nervous and a little anxious but I am on 200 mg Zoloft a day and .5 to 1 mg of Xanax daily this helps me be more like myself.

I have been on bystolic since July2008. My md prescribed it for PACs. It has helped me tremendously, however, I do have to take it before bedtime as it can make me feel tired when taken in the daytime. I also take a cholesterol lowering statin Liptior, but I do not feel any weakness, numbing or cramping of my muscles. I have been on Lipitor for 7 years. I feel better knowing I am taking a statin and a beta blocker as preventative medications due to the heart history in my family. They seem to well work for me.

Question/Comment:

I've read some of your comments concerning Bystolic and its very interesting to know about the side effects. I started taking 5mg cut in half which is 2.5 mg at night, replacing Atenolol. I took Atenolol for 10 years at 50 mg per day for irregular heart beats along with .5 mg Clonazepam 3 times a day to control anxiety. For the past year and a half i noticed that my heart rate fell below 50 so my doctor put a 24 hour holster monitor on me to monitor by irregular heart beats and heart rate. He called me immediately after saying i have a 2nd degree heart block. So he took me off the Atenolol completely. Two weeks later i was feeling heavy pounding, feeling like my heart wanted to stop, my heart was skipping on average 8-10 times per minute. I went back to my cardiologist who took me in immediately and told me he was going to put me on Bystolic. That first day i felt great, I was having steady heart beats. It's been about a week now and still taking 2.5 mg of Bystolic. I went back to the cardiologist for a tilt table test and noticed my 2nd degree heart block did not show up on the test, but i did tell them that i was having sleepless nights. I asked them if it's ok to take my 1 mg of Clonazepam with Bystolic. I've been sleeping better now, waking up with a little energy. The cardiologist did tell me that my side effect of sleeplessness was the opposite compared to the most common drowsiness with Bystolic. Starting next week i'll be taking Bystolic in the morning and Clonazepam at night when needed. So far so good with Bystolic. I'll keep you posted.

I've been taking Bystolic 5 mg. in the morning for a year now, after previously trying three other BP drugs which gave me intolerable side effects. It does take a couple of months for your body to completely adjust to Bystolic, but for me it was worth the wait because Bystolic has so few side effects compared to others. The only problem I had is with consistently poor sleep... I've had to start taking Trazodone 100 mg. each night to counteract the insomnia. No, I'm not happy about adding another drug to my daily regimen, but I really feel that the addition of Trazodone is the best alternative for me.
